It's a hi Flo.
SPEAKER_02Welcome back to The Latest with Maya. Flo Chase is a musician who I first spoke with about two years ago. Thank you so much for joining me. I'm so excited to be talking with you again.
SPEAKER_00Thank you, Maya. I'm so excited as well. Thanks for having me back.
SPEAKER_02Of course. Yeah. So you're uh about to release a new album. Uh what was the inspiration behind this release?
SPEAKER_00Yes, I am uh releasing a new album in the summer. Uh I just released the first single for it. Uh and I've been kind of working on it for a little while now. So there's definitely different inspirations between different songs, but I think the core message uh behind the album is just to live. It's about freedom, like enjoying life, uh sort of uh swimming through the chaos and just reminding ourselves that uh life is meant to be lived and uh it's a beautiful world that we live in, even with all the all the crazy stuff going on in it. But I think it's just a reminder that we gotta celebrate one another and just yeah, the freedom of being alive.
SPEAKER_02Yeah. Oh, I love that. Yeah. Yeah. Um, so is there a song on that album that you feel most excited about?
SPEAKER_00That's such a good question. Uh, I feel like it changes all the time because uh I'm sure a lot of musicians can relate, but I feel like the latest song you work on is the one you're the most excited about. So I'm currently on the final song of the record. Uh, we're almost done with it. And so far, this one feels like the one that I'm most excited about, but I think it's because it's the freshest as well. So yeah, there's a few. It's definitely probably the first album where I'm really stoked about like each song individually. I've definitely released albums before where there were certain songs that I've had on there because people liked, but I wasn't sure if I wanted to have it on there. This one I actually feel pretty good about, all of it. Yeah.
SPEAKER_02Oh wow, I love that. Yeah. Um, so yeah, this is your um third album. Uh so are there any lessons that you carry forward after each album release?
SPEAKER_00Any lessons from the past like on those albums or yeah. Yeah, I mean, uh definitely. I feel like you learn as you learn more as you release an album. It's also a different chapter in my life every time. I've taken like each album is definitely a period of my life. Uh but yeah, there's a lot in terms of just even recording. I feel like obviously, like anything, the more you do it, the more you grow, the better you become at things. So, in terms of like production and songwriting, it definitely feels like uh I took it up a notch from the last one, and each album is kind of felt that way. And uh also with marketing and getting the music out there, even though it changes all the time. Uh definitely learned things from that, the produced releases for sure.
SPEAKER_02Oh wow. Yeah. Um, so what is the biggest obstacle, either personally or professionally, you've overcome?
SPEAKER_00Um, that's a great question, actually. Uh I think the fact that I'm still fully independent uh for this record, so I've had to fund everything myself. That's obviously covering production costs, studio time, shots on music videos, marketing. Uh that's probably been the biggest challenge, is just to be able to uh to afford it and to pay for all that stuff and still be able to, you know, pay for uh the basic needs that we all have, rent, food, and all that stuff. So yeah, not having a label or any type of funding attached uh was probably the one of the most challenging parts but also one of the most rewarding because yeah, everything I've done I've been very attached with. So yeah.
SPEAKER_02Oh wow. Yeah. Um so if you had the opportunity uh to put a message on a billboard for everyone to see, what would it be?
SPEAKER_00It's gonna sound so cheesy, but love one another. I feel like we're living in a day and age where everybody's so individual. Maybe it's because of a lot of like social media and all that stuff that we forget that we're sharing deserve with everybody. And uh I think together we make one. So yeah, I'd say be there for one another, love one another would be the the message.
SPEAKER_02Oh I love that.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, yeah, I'd like to see that one that yeah, it's such a simple message, but I feel like sometimes we forget like you know the basics in life, and we need to remind each other of you know the important things, like it's very straightforward, but it's what life is all about.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, definitely. Um so what uh subject could you give a TED talk on, even though you were totally unqualified on that subject?
SPEAKER_00What could it be? Uh maybe something to do with sports science, because funny enough, I studied uh like medicine science before going full-time into music, even though it goes back a long time and I forgot a lot of it. Maybe I could try and finesse my way through it.
SPEAKER_02I like that, yeah.
SPEAKER_00Maybe or tennis. I'm such a tennis veteran.
SPEAKER_02I feel like, yeah, that's another one that I could so um do you have a go-to show or movie that you turn on when you just need to tune out the world and escape?
SPEAKER_00Uh I actually don't watch much TV and film. Usually music does it for me, but whenever I just need to zone out, I'll put like a comedy on American Pies a cliche that I'll always put on, and it makes me forget about you know all the stuff going outside, and uh, those ones always hit the spot.
SPEAKER_02I love that.
SPEAKER_00I love comedy, like I feel like when I need to disconnect, I'll I'll go watch something funny.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, yeah, definitely. I um I love comedy and rom-coms, and yeah, so I want my life to be a rom-com, so I actually do.
SPEAKER_00That's funny though, it's very vulnerable of me to say, but I do enjoy some rom coms.
SPEAKER_02I love that.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, okay.
SPEAKER_02Which one's your favorite?
SPEAKER_00Uh which one's my favorite? Um I do like Friends with Benefits with uh Justin Timberlake. I thought that that one was really good. I've definitely watched it a couple times. Um yeah, that's probably the first one that comes to mind. What about you?
SPEAKER_02Um, I mean, there's so many, but uh home again.
SPEAKER_00I don't see that one actually, I'll gotta watch it.
SPEAKER_02Oh, it's so good. It's with Reese Witherspoon. And um, I've actually interviewed a lot of people in the movie. Um and yeah, I've seen it like um I think more than a hundred times.
SPEAKER_00So do you know the lines?
SPEAKER_02Yeah, pretty much. Yeah, yeah, that's yeah, like my one of my all-time favorite movies.
SPEAKER_00So I'll put it on the list. Yes.
SPEAKER_02Oh, I'd love to hear what you think.
SPEAKER_00Okay, at least you know.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, thank you. Um yeah, so what's your um go-to uh since you mentioned you uh it's a lot of music, what's your like go-to um uh musician that you listen to?
SPEAKER_00Kind of changes as well on periods of my life. So for this record, I listen to a lot of uh a band from the stride called Sticky Fingers. They've definitely been a big inspiration. Uh listen to a lot of their a lot of their stuff. John Mayer is another one. Uh that's he's he kind of stuck around since I started music. So especially his album called Born and Raised. Uh, that's definitely one that I'll put on whenever I have to drive more than two hours. I'll put the album on. Uh yeah, I think for this album it was a lot of uh sticky fingers. And I went back to some of uh Edgeurin's like old stuff as well from his first two albums, I think, which was really nice to revisit.
SPEAKER_02Oh cool. Yeah, oh yeah. Um yeah, so if you could um give someone in your life a star on the walk of fame, who would it be?
SPEAKER_00It's a great question. My mind goes, do I pick someone that I know is pursuing something in the entertainment industry? But I think if anybody deserves a star, it's probably my mom. So I'll give it to my mom just for being such a rock and you know the best mother I could ask for. So yeah.
SPEAKER_02Oh, I love that.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, she's awesome, yeah. So thank you for her, yeah.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, I love that. Yeah, I'd give I'd give my mom and my sister stars.
SPEAKER_00If I could yeah, I'd give my dad one as well, yeah. My entire family.
SPEAKER_02I love that. Um so if you had to choose someone to narrate your life, uh, who would you choose and why?
SPEAKER_00Okay, that's sort of I love I'm loving these questions, by the way.
SPEAKER_02Thank you.
SPEAKER_00Um who would I choose and why? Oh, great question. Uh I'd probably pick my brother. Uh just because we kind of sound alike as well. So I was my mom was like, you gotta find someone of a weird accent first if you need to sound like me to work. Uh but no, but also he's probably the person who knows the most about me. We're so close. We even work together. So yeah, there's anybody I can trust to do an amazing job, that would probably be my brother, yeah.
SPEAKER_02Oh, I love that. Yeah. Um so if you had to choose a theme song that plays every time you enter a room, uh, what would it be and why?
SPEAKER_00That's another good one. Uh I'm gonna go back to that message that you put on the billboard. I'd probably go One Love by Bomali. Yeah. Uh Jamin. Yeah.
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
SPEAKER_00It's one of those songs that you know will just brighten up the room right away.
SPEAKER_02So yeah. Oh cool.
SPEAKER_00Yeah.
SPEAKER_02Actually, what was the name of the song?
SPEAKER_00Uh it's Jemin by Bob Marley.
SPEAKER_02Oh, okay. Because I don't think I've heard that song, so I'm gonna go listen to it.
SPEAKER_00I'm sure if you put it on, you'll you heard it somewhere on the street or on a radio or something.
SPEAKER_02It's it's yeah, it's one of the oh cool. Yeah, I probably just don't know uh don't know the name. But yeah, I know there's so many songs that I always I don't necessarily know the name, but I know I've heard that before.
SPEAKER_00So I I I feel yeah, like the same with uh like actors or actresses like people will uh will tell me, oh, she was in this. I'm like, I don't know who she is, and then I'll look at a photo, I'm like, oh of course I know who she is. But I'm really I'm really bad with manager.
SPEAKER_02My mom's the same way. I'll say the name of an actor, and she she says, I don't know who that is, and I just put my phone in her face with a picture of them. I'm like, Yes, you do.
SPEAKER_00So yeah, your mom and I have the same on that.
SPEAKER_02Yeah. I always I try not to, but I always sometimes get annoyed because I'm like, you do know who they are.
SPEAKER_00It's so funny, so I just I'll be with friends and we're having like they're having a full conversation with that person, and I'm like, I feel left out because I have no idea what they're talking about. And then I'll skip, oh wait, all that I knew they were talking about.
SPEAKER_02Yeah. Yeah, they're um oh sometimes I'll be like, uh there's a while ago I was watching a movie with some friends and um my mom, and they were all like there was an actor that they were like, who is that? That looks familiar. And right away I told them I told them the guy's name and what he was in, and and I don't know, they found that um like they were very funny because they just had no idea, and I could right away just tell them exactly who it was.
SPEAKER_00And it's probably one uh one of your special skills, actually the the line of work you're in, you're probably better than like everybody at you know, knowing the person, what they've worked on. That's a cool skill.
unknownThank you.
SPEAKER_00I can't relate on that one.
SPEAKER_02Yeah. Um so is there a movie world that you wish you lived in?
SPEAKER_00Never thought of that, but that's definitely a good question again. Uh feels like it has to be somewhere, you know, super happy. Uh I'm not sure. Maybe uh I don't know. I mean it part of me, obviously I would not want that, but I love the Lord of the Rings. I don't think I would survive very long in there, but it feels like it can be a cool world to experience for a little bit, you know. Maybe yeah, Harry Potter would be cool too. Yeah, that too wouldn't last very long.
SPEAKER_02I love that. Yeah, I feel like I all I always pick worlds that aren't dangerous.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, that's it. That's much smarter.
unknownThank you.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, I'm like, I don't want any world that's like dangerous or something shield and safe.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, that would that make sense. I went the opposite way.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, yeah. I um I would love to live in the world of home again or um another movie I'm obsessed with called Summer Days, Summer Nights. Um those two worlds I want to live in.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, that's another one. Summer Summer and Days, Summer Nights. Is that what you say? I'll look it up too. It's another one.
SPEAKER_02Yes, I would love to know what you think of that one too. I just started rewatching it um the other day.
SPEAKER_00So is it an old like an old school film or no?
SPEAKER_02It came out in I think it was 2021. Okay. Um so yeah, but it it says um 2018, because that's when it was filmed, but it didn't come out till that's um that's something that you forget about movies, like how long in advance they shot till I guess they move a little quicker now, but yeah. Yeah, yeah, I I've my mom and I always um are saying that that yeah, we have we always forget that it usually sometimes they come out really quickly and sometimes it takes.
SPEAKER_00Sometimes it takes a long time. I guess it's like music. Some albums take forever to come out, some people release music very quickly, so yeah.
SPEAKER_02Yeah. Um, so what's an experience um that significantly shaped who you are today?
SPEAKER_00Uh definitely. So my background is French. Uh I grew up on a small French island called New Caledonia. Uh it's like a French colony. But when I was 12, my parents uh moved to Australia. So that's definitely shaped me a lot. Uh just yeah, just growing up in a different culture, uh speaking a new language. I just feel like yeah, it's definitely shaped me because now home is Australia, even though my background is French. Uh yeah, Australia's had a huge impact on my upbringing, I think. Yeah. But I really got closer to music when I moved to Australia. Yeah.
SPEAKER_02Oh wow.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, that's definitely the big one. So grateful my parents did. I thank them all the time. Uh even though, you know, when you're 10, you're like, I don't want to leave my friends, I don't want to go. Uh at first I was giving them a hard time about moving away, like I'm sure a lot of kids do. But honestly, I'm so grateful uh they did that.
SPEAKER_02Yeah. Oh wow. Yeah. Um so what are the songs uh that make you sing along whenever you hear them?
SPEAKER_00There's so many. Honestly, any song. I sing along to anything on the every time the something's playing, I'll just find myself singing along. Yeah, but yeah, there's so many, honestly. Obviously, the classics, like old school songs, hit all the time. Uh yeah. I don't think I can name one. Honestly, I sing along to so many songs.
SPEAKER_02I love that. I I'm the same way. Um that I can't sing, but it doesn't stop me.
SPEAKER_00So um, yeah, I'll sing along to um like any uh any song that I know that uh it's so funny because uh music is my you know my thing, but I'm really bad with lyrics. Uh I think because they say there's two different types of listeners, people who listen more to the music and people who listen more to lyrics. And I think I've always been grab like I gravitate more towards the music. So yeah, there's certain songs uh I'll sing along, but I'm definitely singing the wrong lyrics. I'm pretty bad with lyrics. Uh I even forget my own lyrics sometimes.
SPEAKER_02Yeah. Um so um I just have uh one final question for you. Um so today, what are you most grateful for?
SPEAKER_00Definitely, I think my family and friends, yeah. That's something that I'll always be most grateful about. Yeah, that's still that's definitely the bigger one. And that you know, my parents are still healthy and alive. Yeah. Yeah. There's a lot to be grateful of. Like there's so much stuff I'm grateful about, but that's definitely the bigger one, yeah.
SPEAKER_02Yeah. Oh, I love that. Yeah.
SPEAKER_00Again, the little things that you know you take for granted. Uh yeah, just the fact that you know your parents are here and you know, brother, sister, whatever, that your friends and family are healthy is something. So like something to be really grateful about, yeah.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, definitely. Definitely. Um well that was um my final question for you. Um thank you so much for joining me.
SPEAKER_00I said so many cool questions. I did not expect those questions, so that was really cool. Yeah, thanks.
SPEAKER_02Oh, thank you.
SPEAKER_00I thought it was gonna be a lot of questions on that, but I love that it was those types of questions, so yeah. Thanks for making it interesting, yeah. Because usually we're always repeating the same things, yeah.
SPEAKER_02Of course, yeah. I always try that's always my goal to not ask things other people ask. Yeah, thank you. Um yeah, thank you um so much for joining me. I've loved uh talking with you again, and um I'm so excited to hear all your new music. So thank you.
SPEAKER_00Thanks for having me again. It's always a pleasure, and keep spreading light. You're literally like when you talk about people bringing light into your room, you you bring light. So keep being in here.
SPEAKER_02Oh, thank you so much. That means so much to me.
SPEAKER_00You're welcome. Thank you.
SPEAKER_02And um, I hope you have a great rest of your day.
SPEAKER_00You too, and uh, I'll see you soon.
SPEAKER_02Yes, definitely. And that's a wrap on today's edition of the latest to admire.
SPEAKER_01Oh no, what's you can go?
