SPEAKER_02

Hi Evan, welcome to The Lightest with Maya. You can currently see Evan Jikelski as Spooner in the show rooster, which I am obsessed with. Thank you so much for being on my show. I'm so excited to be talking with you.

SPEAKER_01

I am thrilled to be talking with you. Thank you so much for having me. This will be fun.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah. Yeah. So who has had the biggest impact on you professionally?

SPEAKER_01

I would say the this most recent um show that I did, Rooster, I would say Steve Carell. I thought it was so inspiring to see someone as successful as him treat new actors like myself, um, who haven't done much in the past, just like we had been co-stars for 10 years. I mean, as soon as the the day I met him came up, introduced himself, and and kind of broke that barrier down and got us all comfortable with him. And it was so much easier going forward to not be nervous, be able to get a grounded performance because we knew him. We knew the real Steve and we were talking after the camera cut. So he became like a friend to a lot of the new actors. So um that helped so much, and it it's inspiring that you know there's real good people in this business, and and he's one of them to model yourself after.

SPEAKER_02

Oh, I love that. Yeah. Um so who has had the biggest impact on you as a person?

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, that's easy. I would say my mom and dad. I I couldn't pin it down to one of them, but um they have, you know, growing up, they have taught me so many valuable lessons, and even helping me chase my dreams, they have been, you know, sacrificed and done so much for me. So um and they're great, they're grandparents, and uh my brother's kids love them, and it's just like inspiring to see like being a par you know, just them being parents, how good they are, and then you know, my mom's a first grade teacher, so she deals with you know, works with kids all day and helps kids in that early stage of their life, you know, move on to the next stage, and she's just great, and my dad is great as well. So, yeah, they're definitely my biggest inspiration.

SPEAKER_02

Oh, I love that. Yeah.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah.

SPEAKER_02

Um so what small things bring you joy on a daily basis?

SPEAKER_01

I would say, well, I live in Los Angeles now. I used to live in Pennsylvania, so the weather I never take for granted. I get out as much as possible. Um, whether it's surfing, whether it's hiking. I mean, there's great hikes around here. Just being in the sun is like such a a little thing that I think everyone takes for granted, but it's just so great to be outside and explore nature and all that. So I would say that.

SPEAKER_02

Oh, I love that. Yeah. Uh I always I I'm like uh people always think I'm weird because I don't like going outside when it's hot out.

SPEAKER_01

Um that's not weird. I mean that look, this sun is brutal here too. So sometimes I I feel the same exact way.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, I well, like the thing I think people uh sometimes look at me strangely for is I love when it's like I just want it to be cloudy and because I just that's when I like going outside when it's cool out.

SPEAKER_01

Believe me, I know people yeah, just like that. That's how my brother is. He we'll save the sun for another time, but go out when it's cloudy. Right now it's cloudy, it's great out. So I agree with you.

unknown

Yeah, thank you. Yeah.

SPEAKER_02

Um so is there um someone who without fail always makes you laugh?

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, I would say my brothers. It's hard. I have three brothers. Um yeah, I would say my brother Max right now. It changes it's a rolling basis, it changes a lot, but man, he's he's very funny. I think my brothers all inspired me to kind of get into the comedy space. They would always um bust my chops. So I had to learn to give it back to them. So uh yeah, they're I I would say my brothers in general are are really funny.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, oh I love that. Yeah, there's so many people that just constantly make me laugh. I um yeah, my my mom and my sister definitely, whenever we're um together, we're just like we're just laughing all the time.

SPEAKER_01

That's the best. Yeah, nothing nothing better than a good laugh. Yeah, I will say that.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, definitely. Yeah. Um so if you had a warning label, what would yours be?

SPEAKER_01

Oh, probably my my ADHD. I'm all over, I'm 100% all the time. And everyone I know will be able to vouch for that. They're shaking their heads right now and going, yeah, that's that's him. Because it can be a lot sometimes, but um, yeah, it takes the right type of person, I guess, to be able to put up with it.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, I um yeah, I think I would have multiple warning labels.

SPEAKER_01

Don't we all, right?

SPEAKER_02

Yeah.

SPEAKER_01

I'm being nice to myself. I I got a lot.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, yeah. Um, I think my my big one would be prone to anxiety, don't overload.

SPEAKER_01

Um that's hey, I'm the same way. I right there, I connect with that one a hundred percent.

SPEAKER_02

What has been the biggest obstacle, either personally or professionally, that you've overcome?

SPEAKER_01

A good question. Um I would say getting over, I would say the obstacle would be the downtime in between jobs and um auditions for the actor because well while being an actor, because um it kind of can feel like I should be doing something right now. Like what oh, what am I doing? I'm not doing this, I'm not doing that, but you have to learn that not everything is gonna come as fast as you want it. It's gonna come at at its own pace. You have you know little control over it, little to no control over what comes in, and you just have to do your best at progressing as an actor between those, and then when the job comes or when the audition comes, you gotta give it your all plus 10%, you know, like do whatever you can, and then if you don't get it, you've gotta learn that it's not because you're a bad actor, it's because that just wasn't meant for you, and you have to progress, and maybe you weren't ready for it. So I think a lot of people can get discouraged by the no's, but I've always um took them as a learning experience, and I know that that wasn't meant for me, so I would say that.

SPEAKER_02

Oh wow, yeah. Um, so I am uh pop culture obsessed and I go on stages of shows that I cannot stop watching. Um is there a show that you are currently obsessed with?

SPEAKER_01

I wouldn't say a new show because it came out a while ago, but I've been binging, it's called Vice Principles on HBO with uh Danny McBride and Walton Goggins. It's very funny.

SPEAKER_02

Oh, cool. I'm I'm gonna write this down.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, and I did start last night. I started um Lord of the Flies, which I think will be my answer, but I need some time to watch it. That'll be my answer in a few weeks, I think.

SPEAKER_02

Oh, cool, yeah. I've been um wanting uh I've been wanting to watch that. I remember that when I read the book, and the book disturbed me so much that I'm like, I wanna watch this, but also that's funny, yeah.

SPEAKER_01

It's very similar to the book, I will say, from the first episode at least. I remember reading it in school. So I was already getting the flashbacks to school.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, me too. Yeah, I um yeah, I remember when I read it, I think it was like freshman or sophomore year of high school. It was uh like every page I read, I felt like I was gonna throw up with.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, it's definitely it's definitely out there. It's a different kind of book for school, especially. I wouldn't expect to read that in school, but yeah. It's a shared experience that we all went through.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah. Yeah, there's um, I mean, there's so many shows I'm obsessed with. I I love being able to binge watch, but I also love having shows that come out weekly that I can look forward to.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah.

SPEAKER_02

And so Rooster was definitely one of them. So I'm very bummed that the season's over.

SPEAKER_01

Oh yeah. Well, season two.

SPEAKER_02

Yes.

SPEAKER_01

So that's great. I'm looking forward to it as well. I'm excited. I love the show as as a fan too. Like, I loved it, so I'm excited.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, I I can't wait for season two. Yeah. Um, so what genre of movie would your life story be told as?

SPEAKER_01

Whoa, that's a great question. I like that. I've never thought of this. Umge comedy.

SPEAKER_02

Oh, I like that.

SPEAKER_01

I don't know if it would be as graphic as super bad or something, but along the lines of that.

SPEAKER_02

I like that. Yeah. Definitely interesting. Sorry, what?

SPEAKER_01

Oh, I th I said it would it would be an interesting movie, I think. We'll see.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, I wanna see that. Yeah, I've always wanted my life story to be a musical and a rom-com. Oh, okay. Because those are two of my favorite genres.

SPEAKER_01

So you would be would that be like a lala land then?

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, except happier.

SPEAKER_01

Happier. We gotta have it happier.

SPEAKER_02

I love La La Land. Yeah, happier.

SPEAKER_01

We don't want to leave the theater crying with with Maya's life story.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah. Um or the first movie I think of when I think of musicals is The Prom on Netflix.

SPEAKER_01

Oh, I've heard of that, yeah.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, that that's one of my favorite movies.

SPEAKER_01

So that's great. I mean that's great.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah. Yeah. Um yeah, so if uh you could give someone in your life a star on the walk of fame, who would it be?

SPEAKER_01

My mom. My mom raised uh three boys. Well, my mom and dad, but she has three boys. No, sorry, I have three brothers, four boys. So she raised four boys, and I was the last, which is even tougher. So I I can't even imagine. I mean, everybody I meet that I tell um that I have three brothers, they're like, your mom has four boys, and I'm like, yeah, she's she's killing it. She uh she's a great mom, so she definitely deserves it. And she's still going and and and going in every day, uh teaching little wild kids. So first graders is not easy, and uh, yeah, so she deserves it. We'll give her the star.

SPEAKER_02

Oh, I love that. Yeah. Um so if you uh had to choose someone to narrate your life, who would you choose and why?

SPEAKER_01

Matthew McConaughey. He's got a great voice. He's got like a I want a southern twang. I want I want a Texas twang, even though I'm not nowhere near from there, but um yeah, or uh you know Samuel L. Jackson's pretty funny, he's got a good voice. I'm gonna go with Matthew McConaughey. I'm gonna stick with my first answer, and he's great. I I read his book, he's definitely a big inspiration for me um creatively, so I love all his work.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, I I love that. That's a great answer.

SPEAKER_01

Who would yours be?

SPEAKER_02

Oh, there's a lot of people I love. Um, but I I wanna say I think Reese Witherspoon, because uh that's great. I love her movies. Um, and she her movie Home Again, I've seen, I think, I mean, so many times I've lost track. It's one of my all-time favorites.

SPEAKER_01

Are you excited for because they're she's I think she's producing the the legally blonde series? Are you excited for that?

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, I am.

SPEAKER_01

That's it looks really good. I'll definitely tune in.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, I'm so excited to see it.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, that's so cool that they're doing that.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, definitely. Yeah, that's um I'm hoping to I would love to be like part of a uh press junket for the show.

SPEAKER_01

Oh, that would be great.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, that's like that's a goal of mine.

SPEAKER_01

Well, while I'm sending my my wishes, I I hope that happens. That would be so cool. You would do a great job. You these are great questions.

SPEAKER_02

So definitely thank you so much.

SPEAKER_01

Of course.

SPEAKER_02

Um so what song, whenever you hear it, brings you back to a specific memory, and what is that memory?

SPEAKER_01

It's like diving deep in nostalgia. I like this. Um, I was a big Curious George fan when I was little. So Upside Down by Jack Johnson. I remember listening to that song all the time. And um my mom would when I was little, I would watch episodes, I would watch so much Curious George that if we had something to do, like my mom had to go to the store or something, she would tell me the time in Curious George episodes. So she'd be like, All right, we're going to the store in four episodes or three episodes. So, because I didn't understand time at that point, but I knew how long three uh Curious George episodes, so I had to watch three, and then all right, it's time to go. So definitely Upside Down by Jack Johnson. It's great, great song, too.

SPEAKER_02

Oh, yeah, yeah, I love that. Yeah. Um, yeah, there's so many songs for me that just have yeah, I've specifically takes you right back. Yeah, it's so funny how that works.

SPEAKER_01

Like even now, I'll I'll listen, I'll just turn turn my phone on shuffle, and then something comes on, and you're right back to to like a moment. It's so cool how that works.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, definitely. Yeah. Um, so um what uh do you have a comfort show or movie that you um just turn on when you need to tune out the world and escape?

SPEAKER_01

Let me think. I got a few, so let me think of my favorite one. Oh I would say monk. It's uh detective show. Yeah. That one, because I grew up and I think my brothers, I know my mom and dad would watch it too, but my brothers loved it. So it definitely takes me back to when I was little, and I still remember parts of the episodes when I watch it, but yeah, every couple months I'll turn on a few episodes and it's such a good comfort show. So I I yeah, I would say monk.

SPEAKER_02

Oh, I love that. Yeah, yeah, I love that I love that show. I um yeah, I also have a long list that I rotate between.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, right.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, yeah. Yeah. Um Reese Witherspoon's movie Home Again is definitely one of my comfort movies.

SPEAKER_01

That's the comfort movie. That's a that's a great comfort movie. I need to I need to check that one out and see if that can be my nil. We'll see.

SPEAKER_02

Oh, yes, it's so good. I I remember the first time I watched it with um my mom and my sister, and then it was like every time we were um doing a movie night, that was a go-to movie.

SPEAKER_01

Oh, that's awesome.

SPEAKER_02

And yeah, now it's um I rewatch it um just yeah, all the time. And days like I'm now feeling well, that's my go-to movie.

SPEAKER_01

That's great. That's that's so fun that we're able to uh have something like that to just instantly make us feel better.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, absolutely. Yeah. Um, what um show or movie do you find yourself quoting all the time?

SPEAKER_01

Recently, I quote The Office a lot. That's an easy one though. I can get a lot of people quote The Office, but um Or I'd say East Bound and Down with um Danny McBride has a lot of funny moments. It's definitely not a PG show, but um yeah, between East Bound and Down and The Office, I would say those are my two that I that I quote TV-wise.

SPEAKER_02

Oh, I love that.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, yeah.

SPEAKER_02

I uh my brain is just filled with show and movie quotes and references and that's the best though.

SPEAKER_01

You when you meet somebody who's got a lot of references to movies, it's it's fun. They just yeah, that that's a great, it's a great trait.

SPEAKER_02

Thank you. Yeah, yeah. The shows I quote the most are um Will and Grace, uh Friends, and Psych.

SPEAKER_01

Um yeah, Psych's so good.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah.

SPEAKER_02

I quote those all the time. And the new adventures of old Christine, too.

SPEAKER_01

Oh, that's great. You've got all of them. You've got more than me. Uh uh way more than me. So you're you're you're killing it.

SPEAKER_02

Thank you. Um so do you have any irrational fears?

SPEAKER_01

Irrational fears, fears, you know. One of my biggest fears is um snakes. I hate snakes. Yeah.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah.

SPEAKER_01

Snakes and heights too. I'm I'm weird about heights in certain places. Uh like driving mostly. Like I can do a big hike, but driving up um driving up like a big mountain is just It's this a different feeling.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah.

SPEAKER_01

It's something is like, ugh.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah. I I agree. I don't like roads that are like so uh like twisty and um that it looks like you're about to drive on.

SPEAKER_01

Right, yeah. Like, and that's the weird part about it, because I I would consider like because I guess irrational. Um yeah, even roads that you know you're gonna be fine on. It's just something about, yeah, like the tw. It's gotta be the windy roads that you just feel like you're gonna, but it it's not like you're you're fine, you're there's no danger, but it's uh that's a it's such a weird thing that I that I deal with.

SPEAKER_02

So yeah. I I understand.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, what would yours be?

SPEAKER_02

Oh my brain is basically one big irrational fear. Um so but uh like germs are a big one for me. Oh that's yeah, I think uh like I I say it's rational, but I know a lot of the things I kind of spiral about are irrational, especially because when I say it out loud, I hear it, and then my family also tells me it's irrational. So yeah, that's funny.

SPEAKER_01

That's so funny.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, but there's so many. I think of so many.

SPEAKER_01

I think look, there's just little stuff that's just certain people, like myself too. It just oh gives you the ee vjeebies.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, yeah, definitely. Um, so I just have uh one final question for you. Um so today, what are you most grateful for?

SPEAKER_01

I would say my family. I have such a good support system and I'm so I feel so grateful that I'm able to talk to my family on on a daily basis through like FaceTime and and and see my family through obviously through a screen, but to be able to um because not everybody has the ability to talk to their talk to their family and and see and and see their family too in in some form. So um I just feel so lucky to have one a great support system to where I always feel the utmost confidence because of their support and the fact that I get to talk to them like whenever, I just feel so lucky. So yeah, I'm definitely grateful for them.

SPEAKER_02

Oh, I love that. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Um, well, thank you so much for joining me today.

SPEAKER_01

I God, Maya, thank you. I'm so happy that you reached out to me because I've seen your interviews and they're and they're so great. So I feel so lucky to have sat down with you. This is great.

SPEAKER_02

Oh, thank you so much. That means so much to me. I I've had the best time talking with you, so thank you.

SPEAKER_01

Oh, thank you.

SPEAKER_02

And um, I hope you have a great rest of your day.

SPEAKER_01

Oh, thank you so much, Maya. You too. Take care.

SPEAKER_02

Thank you. You too. And that's a wrap on today's edition of The Latest with Maya.
