Get ready for a special Monday Report dedicated to all things Performing Hypnosis Summit!
Hey guys, Dan Goet here, your host for the Monday report. Um having a really good night, and just making sure, see, that we are live to be all the places that we're supposed to be live at. So we're live on that page, and I believe we are live on our YouTube page. And we are live on our website. So good to go. So tonight we are talking about performing hypnosis summit with the guys that put it all together. And that is none other than Grant Saunders, a professional stage hypnotist, and is considered to be one of the UK's top hypnotists. He has spent years dedicated to perfecting his craft and being an amazing stage hypnotist, along with Sean Kostiak, the veritable captain, as they call him, founder of SK Hypnosis, and one of the team that brings you the Performing Hypnosis Summit, which was born in 2023 out of conversations during the COVID uh pandemic. The founder Grant Saunders, and at the time, Jim Kellender decided that they needed a summit just for stage hypnosis. And we are gonna get into that. I'm gonna bring those guys on right now without any further ado. If I can find the right mouse for my computer. So Grant Saunders, I've got two monitors. Every once in a while, my hand hits the wrong mouse, guys. But if you watch, you know that all the time. I'm over here struggling with monitors and mice. Um, and it's just like a new novel to write of monitors and mice.
SPEAKER_03Yes.
SPEAKER_01I I like it of monitors and mice. Um, so that is, you know what, we're gonna go with it. So, and just oh, you know what? I'm gonna unplug my headphones so we don't hear my voice echoing, as I was doing some editing earlier today with videos, and it's never good. It's always something you want to be so professional, but you leave your headphones plugged in so people can hear your voice doubly, you know, faint as it is, and they're just like, what is he doing? I don't understand. But I have something special for you guys. Um, let me go out of here and right up into here so that we have our great ticker to let people know that it is all PHS all the time.
SPEAKER_00Yes, yes.
SPEAKER_02So ain't that stand's motto after September 13th.
SPEAKER_01Yes. It certainly is. And right here, guys, is the QR code for the performing hypnosis summit. Scan that, check it out, get your tickets, um, be there. So I think I should put that in the um what do you call it? The chat too, as well. So if I can find your website real quick, guys, it shouldn't be too hard to find. There it is. I'm pulling it right up so that people can see the amazing website you guys got going on. So your website is so much better than mine. It looks so much better. It really does.
SPEAKER_02All Grant.
SPEAKER_01Yes. Um, so post to all destinations. I did. But all right, so let's get into it. Grant's still a little bit under the weather. Um I can hear that, and it it's the fall. You know what? I I have the same thing. I always get the sniffles, and you can probably hear it in my voice. My voice tends to get a little out of sorts in the fall. Um, I think it's just uh the changing of the seasons brings us brings us to it. Um so it becomes uh did someone just send a message? I heard that's me. That's me.
SPEAKER_02We'll just get rid of that extra facement.
SPEAKER_01So yeah, so okay. Um one of the things we want to start with, obviously, tonight is um I know you guys have said this before, and we're gonna say it again for those. And if you do wind up watching this again on the replay, please put hashtag replay so that we know that you are seeing it. Um I think we've got a couple people watching. So getting into it. So, what is it about the performing hypnosis summit at the Gold Coast Casino, by the way, in Las Vegas, that makes this event different from other hypnosis conferences or hypnosis conferences.
SPEAKER_00I know why, but I know, you know, you've definitely a lot of hypnosis conferences, uh, are all of them are a great place where people can come together and share ideas. But therapists and performers are two very different types of I'm not saying different types of people, but there's as performers we do go through a different kind of mindset, um, and our kind of the way we do things is very different. And so to have a conference where it is just people that understand you know the the the highs and lows of being a performer, of being on the road, um, of the the egos involved in the stage side of things. Um I think that was definitely missing in the hypnosis conference community. A lot of it was aimed at hypnotherapists. There was lots of stuff out there for business, there's lots of stuff out there for entrepreneurs, but the entertainers were all kind of just flying solo, they're all doing their own thing. So, you know, we kind of we came together out of a necessity out of the pandemic, and then we never look back, really.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. Um, first one was virtual. I kind of remember being a little bit um, I think I did a presentation on that, and it was really great, just because I've been to a lot of virtual conferences and they don't run smoothly. It's like uh, you know, uh the camera is working on the microphone, or you can't get into the room, or the uh the uh what are they they sometimes they'll have the the lobby and you can't get into the lobby. And if you get into the lobby, you can't get out of the lobby to get to the presentation room. But you guys uh you guys handle that well. Um thanks mostly to the captain.
SPEAKER_03You know?
SPEAKER_01Uh yeah.
SPEAKER_02Well, yeah, you know, it's it's it's always interesting when you get the view from behind the scenes and how things are set up and how things are running and so on and so forth. But uh I I think you know, if you bring up the first conference, Dan, and and I've said this, I don't know, at least a dozen times before. That first conference was special because we had a panel of our legends, you know, Tom Silver, um uh Anthony Gailey, this you know, the the legends. And they had just the the absolute perfect human moment because while we were busy fiddling with the tech uh and trying to get things set up and make sure they were all connected, they started talking about hey, do you remember the time when we met in Chicago and such and such a restaurant in the airport? That uh, you know, and and it was just this really cool human moment to say, you know what, even though you know we are considered to be the big names in in uh you know stage hypnosis, this is our human story. And uh we've seen that play out again and again and again every year at PHS. Yeah.
SPEAKER_00There was a there was a moment I remember I think I think Jim Jim messaged me whilst it was happening, and it's it was exactly what Sean said there. It was it was legends, and it was people that had been rivals in the industry effectively, that hadn't spoken to each other in 30 odd years, who individually were were absolute the top of their game, and they were kind of like they shared the same space and realized that they actually got on. Um, and that was that was an iconic moment.
SPEAKER_01So it was, which was the next question, uh, which was basically you know, what is uh uh one of the moments at the presentations, conversation or experience that the summit that really stood out and why? And I think we've we've covered that. Um there's so many more. There is. I was just thinking of one.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, I think one that stands out for me, and it's weird because it's it's not one that probably people would think is a moment. Um, it's after that first one when all the recordings got lost. Um and that that could that could have been a major, you know, a major hurdle for the conference to overcome. But what was great is is as as a collective, we we fronted that and said, hey guys, here's what's happened. This is our mistake, let us make it right by you. You know, if you bought those recordings, then you can come to Vegas and we'll look after you. And you know, we did everything we could to make that right, and I think sometimes how you handle the mistakes is what kind of helps you step forward. And I think that that was another great moment for the conference because I think it helped the community, especially the stage hypnosis community, because we can be a bit cynical sometimes, um, realize that this wasn't just this wasn't just a thing just to make some money, this was actually a thing for bring everybody together. So and and and talking about moments when Terry Stokes dressed as Superman and the captain um both in their outfits, it looked amazing.
SPEAKER_02So yeah, I prefer to think of it as a uniform, but that's okay. Yes, it it is a uniform.
SPEAKER_01Um, so I I I think I I have to bring my uh I think I have to bring my robes out there, uh, my wizard robes, because I I think I said I was gonna do that last year and then I forgot. So but Brian, you know, you know, nobody reminded me. And of course, and hey, there's Brian Bay right now. Speak of the devil. Dan looks like the Michigan version of Wolverine. I could never look so good. So I'm telling you, man. I don't have the claws or anything for that. But which leads us into uh, I will say this one of the things that I remember uh was Tom Silver coming to that last conference. Um special moment because you know he he he wasn't well and you you know what I mean, he still he still came and still just made a huge impact in people's lives, um, you know, which was really great. Um no, uh we will not be asking. We shan't be asking. Um so, anyways, getting into the next question, right? If if someone is a stage performance uh or stage or performance hypnotist and they're watching this right now or will be watching this on the replay, what would you tell them they should come to the summit and be prepared to learn and experience and take home? Because that's the important thing is what you take home. Yeah, you know, yeah.
SPEAKER_02Well, we all come off of a conference with a conference high. There's no question. Every conference you go to, it it's you know, you go from zero to a hundred and you're taking in information and then you leave and you're still functioning at that hundred, thinking, okay, now how am I going to use all of this? You know, hence the reason for the the videos afterwards, because then you can go back and say, Oh, yeah, okay, that's that that's why. Yeah, but I think the reason that you come to PHS is because it is dedicated uh to the the art, the science, the functioning, um the community, and especially that last one, the community. We are all lone wolves. And my grand said it best, you know, talking about the legends and guys that were were rivals, you know, Terry Stokes versus Anthony Gailey versus you know, and and and and you know, sure they met and you know had lunch and so on and so forth. But um the one thing I can say is when they got together, it was instant drop the ego, let's get down to business, let's share as much as we can, let's pour into people. And we we've seen that year over year over year. You know, and we bring up Tom Silver. I think Tom, if you asked Tommy Giorlando about his experience, is romantic, um, you know, they now have uh the Tom Silver Foundation. That doesn't happen by accident. That that happens because you know, there was somebody who took the time to say, you know what, despite where I'm at right now, I still want to leave a legacy, I still want to pour into the community, and somebody picked that up and said, I will do it.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. So which I think is great. Um because you know, and so we have some, you know, right there is the Gold Coast Hotel, and nice rooms, really um lovely rooms right off the strip, but not so far away from the strip that it's super removed.
SPEAKER_00Um no, I mean it is it is walking distance and it's only it's a nice 10-minute walk.
SPEAKER_01So yeah, and you can see the I mean right there is the the the strip. I mean you can see it from the hotel. The um, I think that's the Riviera, and then there's the big uh Ferris wheel, the high roller, which I've bet on. Um, so I'm gonna try and sneak on that this year on the bar car, you know, because if I'm gonna be up that high, there's gonna be a beer in my hand. Uh I will say that right now. And then, of course, Fremont Street. Um, one of the great um joys of going out there to the summit, because I know you guys hit Fremont Street. I love Fremont Street.
SPEAKER_00Um, so well, I mean that's the thing as well. As entertainers, you know, Vegas is the entertainment capital of the world, you know, and uh to be able to appreciate the the showmanship and the razzle-dazzle of Fremont Street, of many of the countless shows that happen in Vegas, we can be inspired by the production value, by the comedy timing, by the the lights, by the sounds, by everything that that is Vegas that makes our shows better.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. Uh Brian says that's the Rio Um that is next door.
SPEAKER_00The big tall building is the real, yeah.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, I lost you guys. Why did I lose you guys?
SPEAKER_00Oh, hold on.
SPEAKER_01There we go. And you're back. So yeah. But it is I think you guys went out there last year, the year before, and were doing street hypnosis, um, which is really cool. Um because people get nervous about doing street hypnosis, and it's oh, I couldn't possibly. Um, I've done street hypnosis, but I've gotten yelled at by at you know, Heather yells at me uh when when I tend to do it, so she's just like I don't know why. So seems to be an odd thing.
SPEAKER_00It's weird, like street hypnosis, it it's a funny one. Um, but what's fascinating with it is again what we saw in at the conference, is you do get some people that are you know amazing stage performers, but then when it comes to doing like impromptu hypnosis on the streets with strangers, you know, it's it's a step out of their comfort zone as well. And so to do that as an out-in as a group uh is is quite interesting as well to see that. So Brian, Brian does lead a group uh to do some fun stuff, and so yeah, it's it's always good fun.
SPEAKER_02Yeah. Okay. And the other thing that we've done this year purposely is that we've constructed the schedule so that at the end of the days there is at least one person who is going to address street performing. Um on the Friday night and the Saturday night. So uh we did that on purpose, and and one of the things we thought about was okay, you know, exactly what Grant said, it's let's take the edge off, let's give them a little bit of uh a little bit of extra training, and then if they want to go out as a group, you know, the the pressure's off. I remember what it was like when I went out there with Jim and his group at hypnothods. That was that was uh well, it was hot. It was like 118 degrees outside.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. What is that about? Um, but I want to back up for just a second. Um, so you guys knowingly and on purpose put Brian in charge of a group of people.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, well you didn't read the disclaimer, it's in the fine print at your own risk.
SPEAKER_01So and then we pick on Brian, but he's a great guy. He's on there right now. He says the poem is across the street, the Flamingo Boulevard, uh, split Caesar's Palace, the Bellaggio is just on the other side of the interstate 15 from the Gold Coast and the Rio. And it is so it is really close. Um, there's a lot to see there. So um, yeah, uh, I know I'm gonna get an earful uh from from Brian when I get out there. Um and the magazine is gonna be coming out. We're gonna, when I say that when I get out there, the magazine is gonna be coming out and covering all the things happening at the Hypnosis Summit with our new setup and possibly some new gear, um, if it works the way I want it to work, yes. So it might even be better for that. And but the next question that comes in is the summit brings together some of the biggest names, as we've talked about here tonight. Um, different generations of performers, hypnosis. Uh what happens when all of those people get together in one room? That is, I think we should touch on that because some people are very standoffish of the big names.
SPEAKER_00It's it's an interesting mix because like you would think sometimes that there would be some big egos, but it seems to work well. What I find really fascinating is we do have a mix of some of the you know legends as such versus some new people. So, like Joe Beth has has talked about his journey, uh Jack Gooby, what a fantastic journey he's been on. Um some of the new guys, you know, that are one, two, three, four, five years into it, they bring in energy uh and they bring a different mindset. And so some of the guys that have been doing it 20, 30, 40, 50 years, you know, in their mind they're like, this is how it is, and this other way doesn't work. But then you get someone that's new to it that's like, let's talk about TikTok, let's talk about marketing this way, and so some of the old guys can learn stuff from some of the new guys as well, and like Attila. Attila's great. Um we were talking to Attila at the Michigan International Hypnosis Conference. Um, make sure you pester down about that one. Um, and Attila was talking about like he he wasn't on YouTube, um, but then after like a conversation at the conference, he set up his YouTube channel and has had over a million views now. Uh has over a million followers, and it's like you know, Attila would not have gone down that route if it hadn't been for conferences. So, yeah, it's it's a good mix of the two.
SPEAKER_02And well, shout out Attila because he is going to be our guest uh tomorrow night on the Hypnosis Hero podcast.
SPEAKER_00So yes. As if we'd planned this.
SPEAKER_02Which is uh It's either that or Grant and I are in sync, and and that that should worry the Americans in the room.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. There are what Americans? There are no Americans in the room. Don't make me pull out my Scottish passport. I'll get it right here in just a five way. So and and Brian says friendships and professional relationships are formed, collaborations occur when we play. Where's Israel Mandrake? We've lost Israel, he's gone. Um it's just disappointing.
SPEAKER_02As long as he's not off the map.
SPEAKER_01Exactly.
SPEAKER_02Um I think for me, I what I what I would sum it up as is magic. And I know that we want to dissociate ourselves from the magicians of the world, but I I think every year I've seen uh different, you know, whether it's legends or new people getting together, you know, like we talked about Tommy Gi Orlando and Tom Silver, um, you know, uh Jack Gooby and and uh Claude. Connected to this last year. That just serve to help you not just be that lone wolf, to help you actually become part of a pack that actually gets out there and and uh you know takes advantage of of uh you know a group group mentality, a group momentum, a group that is there to support you.
SPEAKER_01So absolutely. So yeah. Um and the one other question that we have here, somebody sent me this question. So um and it's about what you might touch on or learn uh it from this performing hypnosis summit, even though it is about hypnosis entertainment. Um if you're a hypnotherapist, you know, what is it about that? I think I have an answer, but I know that you guys have a better one. Um, you know, what is it that that the hypnotherapist is getting from the summit?
SPEAKER_02Well, we we've talked about this numerous times amongst ourselves, but I I think the one thing that that people have to realize is that yes, we are we have kind of different functions, and like Grant said, we have a different mindset going into doing our shows versus what a hypnotherapist would have going in to work with a client. However, if you're a hypnotist or a hypnotherapist out there and you need to present, how are you gonna do that if you've never done it before? Uh where are you gonna get those skills from? Well, guess what? There's a whole segment of people that have those skills, they have that knowledge, they can they can walk you through. Look, don't worry, if your tech fails, this is what you do. We we've got the answers because we have the people that know. They were the people that have been there, and I mean I've been there too. I think it was my third show. None of my audio worked at all. I had to make every sound effect myself, which is a good thing. I'm a guy and I can do that. You know, I'd uh had to pull a couple of of Kermit the Frogs out of my hat, but you know, uh you can do it. It works, man. It works. Hey, who's your favorite Muppet?
SPEAKER_03You know, Fozzie Bear and Fozzie Bear, you know.
SPEAKER_02I'm not wearing anything, you know, it's still a naked hand, but they think it's a puppet. So yeah, that's it. Fozzie was always my favorite. You see that call back? And Brian, I see I see your comment about Michael DeShalot feeling attack. Just remember he's got dual citizenship.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. I think the thing is, like we said there, it's it's if if you're a hypnotherapist, you know, you're a therapist that uses hypnosis, you're a hypnotist. If you're not learning and understanding the full spectrum of what hypnosis is, then you know you're leaving a lot of learning on the table and you're doing yourself an injustice. You know, I I also encourage a lot of stage hypnotists to you know learn some hypnotherapy because you know, we are hypnotising people, and you know, to have that skill set as well is only going to benefit yourself in your professional practice, but also the volunteers on stage. It's the full circle of hypnosis. Whereas in the past, a lot of hypnotherapists, you know, they they they learn half the pie, they learn the hypnotherapy, they don't learn the stage, and because they don't understand it, they look at it as like a negative thing as in it brings the industry down a little bit. Every hypnotherapist I know that's done a stage hypnosis training, and everyone should, but everyone I know that has done one has come away with that kind of you know, that learning of they may not do their own stage show, but their understanding of hypnosis and the craft is grown exponentially from learning to do stage hypnosis, from stage craft to audience management, all of the skill sets that go with it are so transferable to hypnotherapists.
SPEAKER_01Um do you guys think, and this is my other question, and it's my opinion that if you're a uh hypnotherapist and you're gonna go to a conference and you're gonna do this presentation and you've never done one before, and you're you know, you're stepping out onto the stage per se, and people can tell you you're nervous, you're fidgeting, you're not getting your words right, you know, you don't have that confidence. When you walk out into a stage hypnosis setting, you've got three or four minutes to get people to like you, grab rapport, and and make it interesting. That kind of confidence would be, I think, beneficial to anyone who wants to do their first-time presentation, or maybe they've only done two or three presentations and they're still not getting it. Um, for me, I I think stage hypnosis would would bring that up a level.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. Especially uh I'm sure other niches on other fields have this as well, but it's interesting as a speaker and performer, um, you know, and you go to a lot of these hypnosis conferences um and there's some great topics, you know, and some real experts in their field. But by joke, some of them are boring, you know. Some of them some of them have great knowledge but don't understand audience management, don't understand presentation skills, you know. My eyes get tired sometimes watching a nervous presenter who is an expert and you can't take away from that, but they're pacing up and down, and so because of that, you know, it's I think especially in the hypnosis conference world, learning the stage stuff is is only gonna make them better presenters.
SPEAKER_02So yeah. And talking about other niches, I mean, they think about it from a middle years classroom perspective. So you have you have a mix of kids that are you know in in their early teens, and as they do in their early teens, they get a little squirrely. Can you outcrazy the crazy enough to keep them not just entertained but also educate them at the same time? You know, that it it's it's as much an art form as it is is a skill, and you need to develop both to be interesting. And like Grant says, there's a lot of boring people out there that maybe don't need to be as boring as they are if they would just make a couple of tweaks. And I say that tongue in cheek, and and if you're if you're one of the boring people that I'm talking to, I apologize in advance. We'll see you in Vegas.
SPEAKER_01That was a great segue, man. Um, but yeah, I get what you mean. And I I will preface that with this. Um I just had to do uh a test for one of the hospitals. Can you identify STEMIS, which is the ST segment for my medical license? Every presenter on that video was so bored that they were there. It was just it was three hours, and it took me three days to watch it because it was such a drudge because they didn't have any skills to present it. Um it was just like, and now you can see that the ST segment here in this slide. I'm just like, oh god, this is horrible.
SPEAKER_02And and you know, the hulls uh I I don't want to say this too loudly because I am one of the the uh people in that uh group, but there are a lot of academics that are you know they they will come in and they will present and it will go and I know a lot of people are saying, well Sean, that's not that hard, it's only five foot five up there, like you know, but it it it speaks to the fact that yes, they know their stuff, but no, they don't know how to communicate it properly, communicate it in an interesting way, change things up so that Dan doesn't have to take three days to watch a three-hour video. You know, there there's uh there's opposite is there's opportunity for improvement, and that opportunity comes in January in 108 days, 18 hours, 59 minutes, and 12 seconds and counting.
SPEAKER_01And I am looking forward to being out there. I'm actually excited to bring the new setup, and I'm hoping that the new video component that I'm gonna bring with me um works the way I want it to work. Um so that it will be so much better. Uh Sean will see it, and he won't even once Sean sees it, I'm not gonna be allowed to touch it after that. I'm just saying he's just gonna take it away from me. You're doing this with it. So um, it is the the road video caster. Yeah, and it's supposed to be able to do a bunch of stuff, but I want to get into it. Um, so yeah, and the one final question on that. Uh I should say, is the room block still open or closed? Let's let's let's ask that so people know. Yeah, the room block is open. Yeah. All right.
SPEAKER_02Plus, we also have uh uh if you're booking your flights, check with uh our website, check with Brian in particular because he has all the discount codes. There are some airlines that have graciously offered discounts on flights. So uh, you know, even surprisingly, WestJet in Canada and and you know, Alaska Air and Delta and United, I think, are are amongst the the larger carriers that uh have offered up.
unknownAnd there's a couple of others that that uh we can't actually publish the code.
SPEAKER_02So definitely, you know, if you're flying on one of those, check with Brian for discount code because hey, you've discounted that our room block has it got a better discount this year because of last year and every year that we grow means a better deal on the ground for everybody and possibly in the air too.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. I I know that um I will be at the MM store. Um that's the most important thing for me.
SPEAKER_02At some point I might just have to go with you. I'd like to see what what is is special about the MM store. Like I I I get it. Like if I'm gonna go anywhere, it's gonna be a Lego store.
SPEAKER_01Oh, I I will go to the Lego store with you, buddy. Okay, done. Yeah, yeah. Just a couple of things.
SPEAKER_02Blend in out in the town.
SPEAKER_01Exactly. Brick by brick. Yes, in the wizard robes and the uniform. We will blend right in.
SPEAKER_02Well, if they happen to have an enterprise, and I'm still waiting to order mine, but you know, because I know they're back ordered, but if they happen to have an enterprise, it might just wind up in my luggage.
SPEAKER_01There you go, man. Um, any last things that we want to talk about for the summit, guys? Keynote speakers, anything like that?
SPEAKER_00One thing we will be doing, um, it's not public yet, uh, is uh Tommy Giolando and the Tom Silver Foundation. Um we're looking at doing some good within the community in Las Vegas as well. Um, and so we're gonna be opening that out to some of the hypnotherapists and hypnotists that come along to the conference, that there may be a bit of a day trip um where that actually helping um people in the community. Um we're still formalizing that process, um, but Tommy is is graciously offered to kind of take the lead on that. Uh, and so I think for those that that don't necessarily want to go wild in Vegas but want to do some good in Vegas as well, um, so that'll be a nice thing as well.
