Well, thanks your manesh my greetings from New Zealand. It's 7:00 at night and the sun's just setting and our world down under. It is like heaven on earth. But my experience that changed my life took place in 1982, was surfing around the world.

For two years, from 1980 to 82, I'd seen a movie called Endless Summer.

And this movie depicted some California kids just surfing following this, I'm trying to avoid winter and in New Zealand and the winter we put wet suits on and it's cold. So I've seen so many surfers and surfing movies and this one hooked me and I thought that's it end of the summer.

I'm going to just take my surfboard, my best friend, and we're going to surf around the world and stay away from cold, miserable, Arctic type weather and look for the tropics. So I took.

Off went up through Australia, Indonesia, Sri Lanka, sailed on a schooner to an island called Mauritius, lived there with the local Creole fishermen, surfing, diving and ran out of money. Like a lot of surfing travellers there in those years because we were living on $2.00 US a day.

Ended up in South Africa, had childhood dreams of game reserves and elephants and lions, and went and saw all of that surf my heart out in Jeffries Bay, Elands.

And after two years of travelling, I decided to do a safari. I wanted to go overland up to mondaca and to Portugal and surf there and then up to the UK cross into South America and come home like circumnavigate the world and my.

Younger brother, who was in Australia, wrote to me and he said Ian, would you come back for my wedding? I'm getting married and I went. Oh, no.

Half around the world, in the midst of my endless summer and my younger brother wants to get married.

I thought, well, gotta do the right thing. I must go back and then I suppose if I go to the wedding.

I can then got through Tahiti and Surf Topia and then go into South America and Surf Peru and I'll go the other way. After I've been to the wedding. So I decided to fly back to New Zealand. In those days you had to stop a Mauritius to refuel. A good friend of mine had said there was great surfing, the reunion.

Island. So I stopped in reunion for a month, surfed on the beach here at Saint Lucent Pier.

Then went up to Mauritius. I hung out with my career old friends waiting for the flight to take me to Perth and then I'm back to New Zealand and my friends were night diving. We were surfing, partying and one night they said Ian, we're going to a place called Rivian Noir. We're surfing this, we're gonna dive on this beautiful.

Area it's love pretence. Fabulous diving. Will you come? When I looked out, I saw electrical storm at sea.

I kind of hummed and hard and I said look, this is some of the best diving in the islands this, this storm will miss us. It should be fine. So against my better judgement I went.

As we dropped into the ocean to go looking for what what we call crayfish, which I think you'd call lobster. And we began diving with our underwater torches, looking for them. And I started to see a few crayfish or lobster started picking them up. And next one that I made out this.

Cubed that sort of set of jellyfish is that a a cuttlefish? What is that? And I grabbed out with my leather gloves and grabbed it, and it squeezed from my hand. And I thought, Oh my gosh, that's a jellyfish. I've never seen one like that. I've watched every Jacques Cousteau programme on TV. I had just.

I'd wanted to be a marine biologist, so I had a fascination in the ocean and you've never seen this jellyfish. Had I known what it was, I just had a box jellyfish. Go right in front of me.

I then began to make out thousands of them in the in the water beneath me, still not realising what they were, one of them must have brushed past me and and and me. I didn't even see it smashed into my forearm and had, like thousands of volts of electricity. It's as though my whole body.

Was literally shaking in the water. Searing pain.

And then I thought, my goodness sake, what was that? And then I got hit with another one. This time I saw its tentacles brushed past me, and I realised I've been hit twice by this cube shaped jellyfish. The Australians called it a Marine Stinger box Jelly, a sea wasp. The venom minute is supposedly 100 times.

More toxic than a cobra.

And it's killed over 180 to 100 Australians. It's it's considered the deadliest poison, big national geographical discovery said it is potentially the deadliest toxin known to man. And I've just been hit twice. I didn't know what they were, but I knew the French Creole divers would.

So I swam towards them and inadvertently got hit a third time. I I I I flashed my torchlight at as Simon, one of the Creole.

Underwater and to signal the surface he came up, he said kiss a Furman. What's happening? I said something hit me. Someone he said. Get on the reef. Let us have a look. And then as I put my head back into the water to get closer to the coral reef, another one was surging back from the tide and the tidal surge straight at my face.

Had no other option but to roll in the water and took the 4th one across my arm.

And and as I stood up onto the reef, my Creole friend Simon turned white, he said. Bob all said for me, Ian, how come you not know this one? Kill you, brother. My French was pretty poor. It was limited and I was looking at my arm and it was like Popeye. It was like double its normal size and where the tentacles had hit.

It is as though my skin was blistered, as you know, when you burn yourself on the stove, you can your skin will elevate with clear fluid. My whole forearm was literally traced as I've been whipped right across the arm.

And excruciating pain. It's like someone had a branding iron physically on the flesh, and it was like melting into the into the the up. The other divers had full wetsuits on so they'd been protected. They had rubber hoods, rubber birdies to them. The water and Mauritius at night was cold to me. The water and Mauritius.

Coming from a temperate climate like New Zealand, it was like a lukewarm bath, so I'd only worn what we call a vest, short sleeve vest and what we call surfing a long John. So my four arms, my neck, my face were exposed as well as my ankles.

So I've been hit. They were totally protected because of the the the wet suits they were wearing. They also knew that these things were deadly. So they're now telling me how deadly they are. They said. Yeah. And I let elevate them all. That's from a hospital. When you see a black trustafarian turned white.

And you pull them up bongs and chills with them, and spot enough hash on the stove to know that this guy doesn't panic. Very.

Yeah. I mean, he's the Peter Troche Bob Marley boys. Don't worry, be happy. And when you see them go white, suddenly your world comes crumbling down and you see terror hit their face.

So I knew this was deadly serious. They were. They were dragging the wooden boat up to the reef next to me and I got in the water as they dragged me into the boat, hit a fifth time.

Have I done to deserve this and then add a flood of memories of stuff had done wrong in my life? I thought, oh God, I did that too. Shoot.

You know how how many of us have been there and done that well? That was a complete Heather not well practised. I mean, I've been there and done that and here I am, 26 years of age 5 box jellyfish stings, my arms swollen and blistered and fishermen telling me one would kill me as they dragged the fishing boat.

Up onto the coral reef, I said Simon, the the boat. You ruined the boat, he said. Not life. A boat.

Ian, you die.

A very poor fisherman. They look after their boat, they make sure it doesn't go anywhere near the reef, so they're dragging it literally over the top of a a staghorn coral reef to get me into the lagoon and and then they stand there as the young boy who's got a pole in his arm. He's he's our boat boy began to pole.

Way towards the shore, I said someone come with me, said Ian. We have no motor, you die, Brother Alley, alley, go, go. In hindsight, they should have.

Because unfortunately, the young kid didn't he. He was panicking too. The child took me to shore. I said some on my arm. What can I do for this blistered arm? He said urinate pee on your arm. What? He said urinate and pee on it now. Well, I'd heard as a lifeguard, as an instructor and scuba.

And my mother thought I ate fish blood in me. I spent so much time in the ocean and I knew that vinegar had been used to nullify toxic jellyfish things, blue bottles.

So that you may have some kind of a Bush medicine. So I urinated on my arm and pulled my weight suit off cause I could hardly breathe and and got my back itself into my Balinese pants and and my my surf T-shirt that I had in the boat. I was so dehydrated fortune there was a bottle of water and then I just.

Ground it. My arm was burning. I could feel the poison hit my kidneys, so having difficulty breathing in my right lung.

And I thought, God, I better make try and find a piece of rope to make a tourniquet on this arm. So I just manually I couldn't find a rope, so I manually tried to restrict it at university, had done a degree in agriculture and at Lincoln College in in the South Island. And I've done veterinary science. So I had some idea of what I should be doing.

So I'm manually trying to restrict the neurotoxin that's in my arm.

When I hit the beach, I stood up to get out and to my horror, my right leg collapse.

I the numbness or paralysis had already taken the right inside of my body out as a collapse of the boat amongst the crayfish. This kid grabbed me and he motioned for me to put my arm around his neck and shoulders and grabbed my paralysed arm and he bodily dragged me out of the boat.

I don't know how I physically carry because I was twice as size and weight at least, but I've heard of people under extreme pressure lift burning cars up, you know, do feats of strength that they shouldn't do, and so this kid's carrying me literally young, young, 14 year old boy.

I'm dragging me up along this coral sandy beach up through the homes into the main Rd.

It's 11:00 at night in this part of the world. It's it's very desolate. It's kind of the local Creole fishing area, AA few fishermen, but they're in hotels further away.

This was deserted. All the houses were basically only used by very wealthy French from Parisians who came down from the Riviera. You know, once a year for two or three weeks and this was not the season for them to be there. So there was desolate. Now the young kid started panicking, he said more fair, more fresh.

Supplier, she said. For me, I'm going. No ambulance. Jean Darm, telephone. I wish I'd done better. French.

Kid then this is 1982. So no phones, no Internet, no mobile, no nothing, right? This kid panics and runs back to the fishing boat and begins to go out to save or rescue the other two divers, who of course, didn't need saving, cause they had. They can wet suits on.

So I'm left here on the side of the road middle of the night, half paralysed, feeling incredibly tired and and and a sense of almost sleepiness enveloping me.

Next, when I find myself lying down on the side of the road, my eyes just naturally begin to close as my eyes were going to close. I hear the audible voice of a man speak to me, to my right, he said. Son, if you close your eyes, you will never awake again, so crisp, so clear, it startled me.

And I looked, to my amazement, no one there.

It was that some Invisible Man with a hexagon, actually a few other words. But I won't say them on this, so I looked.

To him, what?

And and I thought, well, well, that voice, it said if you close your eyes, you'll never.

Awake again. I thought, you idiot.

Sleep. This is a coma. This is certain.

Lifeguard what's what are you doing? You fall. How many? Talk to yourself. It's nice to abuse yourself as long as no one else does it. So I'm basically having a conversation with self. Saying my goodness sake, how close did I come to snuffing it? Because I knew full well this was not gonna be asleep. This was what would be called a coma.

Like most people within 10 or 15 minutes are being stung by these things, slip into a coma and never come out. In fact, lifeguards are taught to slap them, to shake them to even if they administer anti serum. At that point they must keep them cognitive, otherwise they will literally slip into a coma and never awake.

Had I been stung on the neck, I found out later I would have been dead within 3 or 4 minutes. I would never have even got out of the water. So the fact that I protected my face in the ocean saved my life from actually being killed instantly, basically in the.

So I came that close to dying. Now when you realised that you were nearly dead and falling asleep was the the prerequisite to going. You fight, whether you, whether you understand who that voice was. And of course I didn't have a clue what that voice was. And I think the Bible says my.

My sheep hear my voice. Well, that's what you call a black sheep. So I had no belief. It's interesting. God can speak to total, complete, whacked out heathen like me.

He has an ability to somehow break into my insane world, and so here I am. I am fighting for my life. I I, I I looked down the road.

And I see about 100 metres down the road, which I hadn't seen a small petrol station and I could see what appeared to be cars and 2 E Indians tan.

Bots and these have been brought in by the English to make the sugar cane fields, and so when you see an Indian in Mauritius with the with the car at night 9 times out of 10, it's a taxi. It won't have taxi written on it, but.

I thought great mate, I might even get to the hospital, so I put my weight into my left leg, use my right leg as a crutch, cause it was paralysed.

Hobble down the road towards them, as in doing this, they're looking at me, laughing and thinking. Look at this.

Why boy, he can hardly stand, so I'm staggering, literally, barely able to walk, he said. Are you drunk, you stupid boy? You know what I mean? I said not drunk. I've been stung by this deadly jellyfish I need for Envisat. I need ambulance. Hospital. A cut through wall hospital now.

So I leaned up against one of the cars to support my weight and they said, well, we have we have French client and restaurants I spent. I'm dying. Can you please take me? They said we can how much money you pay?

You won't make money off a dying man, so I just restrain myself from commenting and said look, mate, I'll give you 50. A hundred U.S. dollars.

And three of them started coming towards me because that's a lot of money they could have bought their car for that much as they three of them came, one of them stopped, he said. Let me see your money. Show me your money, white man.

And all three stopped and I went. I don't have it on me. I've been diving on the reef, but of course they didn't have a wet suit on, so they couldn't figure it out. I'm got my Balinese shirt.

Pants on. They just see some drunk idiot with no money. So all three of them just walk away.

I said, mate, I'll give you whatever money you need and they laugh lit up a.

And I realised I was in serious trouble. This part of the world. No money. You can die.

I'd travelled for two years. I knew the real rules of the road. You. You. It's not the West. It's not. This is a third world country. And so I'm looking at these men begging, trying to persuade them to do something. And I get I I can't get them next when I hear their voice for a second. Time was as though he's standing right behind me. He said. Son, are you willing?

A big for your life, it's a brilliant idea. I hadn't thought of it. I turned around to see where the voice was coming from. No one there. That's crazy. It's that same flipping voice. What is this big? I thought. Well, I'm sure these Indians have never seen white men beg and Mauritius be a flipping first.

So I thought, well, I've got nothing to lose. My leg, my right leg.

Stuffed. So I've lived in South Africa and seen the Zulu and the Corsica Essen boss begging to the the the white Afrikaans. So I fell to my knees, cut my hands. I could see in the the Zulu DEW and in the child province and began to beg for my life.

This got the attention of three of them. They stopped.

Two of them try to figure it out. Two of them just stuff it walked away. The third young Indian man to actually drive it looked at me and I I'd even looking and I could see his feet.

And they were shuffling as if they were going to follow his friends, but without a word. He walked straight towards me. Thank God for that, even though I didn't believe in God. It's interest in how people can thank God when they can't believe, mate. Anyhow, he helped me into his taxi. I thanked him profusely as we raced off towards the hospital. He began asking me what hotel room I stayed in.

Because he wanted to know how he's going to get his hundred US that I promised him while I was begging for my life. It's a very smart taxi driver, I said, mate, I don't stay in a hotel. I live with the local Creole fisherman in Tamarin Bay.

He said you stay in the Tamarin Bay hotel. I said no. I live with the fisherman in a bungalow from and he didn't understand me. Just said I'm not take you any further. I take you to the Tamron Bay hotel. You not paid me the money. The tourists can look after you.

So no matter how much I pleaded with him to keep going, he pulls into the village, stops in front of the small Chinese hotel in in tamarind below, and tells me to get out. I I live in the village, they know me heaps of friends, so I thought I might to try and get out. So I try to physically get out and found that my left leg now.

Well along the right leg, we're completely numb. No movement.

Total paralysis in the lower trunk, I said so my legs are gone. I can't even get out of your text. I'm sorry. I'll give you whatever money you want if you can.

Can't move. Took me safety belt off. Open the door and shove me straight out of his taxi.

I I just couldn't believe what had just happened. I flew out the door, crashed onto the ground.

To see that my feet that I couldn't feel were caught in the door. Still my legs were elevated to one I didn't snap and he was now leaning over picking my ankles up, throwing my feet out of his taxi and disgust, slamming the door and driving off.

What kind of sick open person would do that?

Although well, if your numbers up, do yourself a favour and you might as well snuff it here, why don't you just die here? Why would you want to live on a sick planet that treats fellow man like this for 50 or 100 miserable bucks? Do yourself a favour, close your eyes and die. Well, I lay there contemplating the thought of just giving it up.

World wars. Now. He was born in east London. Come to New Zealand and had fought. Fought against in what is it in LA, Maine in the First World War and the Second World War against Rommel. And he'd been in Gallipoli in that horrendous battle. The Australian New Zealand's got slaughtered. And so he had fought 2 world wars. And I'm thinking here.

The grandson is giving up over 5 miserable jellyfish things, so part of me thought well, I'll die trying. If nothing else. My grandfather was a regimental Sergeant major mate. He was tough as but he had a soft soft.

But let's just die trying. You know, I think there's a bit of Scottish or I don't know what's in their Celtic Viking. Something's in there, mate. That just won't give up. You kick them down, you'll stand back up. So something in there, it's got some stubbornness to not want to just die. Amira said some skinny edge years ago going.

As it rolled, the doctor went through the ceiling and I saw three nurses had worked on me in Ed, terrified, standing in the doorway. Their faces went white like sheets. One of them jumped back and fright knocked the other one to the ground and the other girl before they even got off the ground and started running.

Thing terrifying, I thought. Well, that's not something coming out of a coma. They look like they've just seen the flipping awake. You know, like flipping. That's some courts have just come back. In fact, in that hospital, they actually scare the nurses by actually having someone feign death. And and their training.

He began to show me into the spirit world.

And I began to see that what I'd experienced was was supernatural, that God had. When one guy said, oh, you've had reincarnation. When I died, I didn't come back as some other form or some Dalai Lama.

But yeah, doctors, I'll turn it up on YouTube. I've gone and interviewed some of the doctors, the fishermen and of course it's a tourist island. The entire island is space tourism, so they don't wanna. They wanna come to paradise. They don't tell them about stonefish sea snakes, box jellyfish, great whites, tiger sharks. They don't want to sell that when it's a tourist destination.

You can't enter into the Holy of Holies apart from repentance, so many of them, even the the Tibetan monks, has been book of the dead. They have these Tibetan monks actually meeting this being of light, but they don't see him. They only see the light and the love.
