Speaker 1:

Well, hi everybody. It's time for another OSTA update for January of 2025. Come on in. Hello everyone. I'm Bill Bateman, part of the team of the Oregon State Tenants Association, or OSTA as we like to call ourselves, and we've got two events coming up I wanted to make sure everyone was aware of. First is coming up real quick tomorrow, january 15th. Now. This is going to be at 10 in the morning and this is a live Zoom session you're invited to join. It will be recorded so you can play it back if you happen to miss it, and the information on all of this will appear in the little box where you join the podcast. Now this is going to be a joint presentation of Matthew Johnson of OSTA and Ken Pryor of Oregon's HCS, and they're going to be looking at the various types of tenant organizations and the right strategies and protections those organizations can offer. If you have to get into situations like mediation or beyond. A tenant organization is the best way to protect yourself in that kind of situation. So tomorrow, january 15th, 10 am, join us for a live presentation. You'll have an opportunity to ask your questions and this will be recorded for later. Viewing Now coming up on January 21st at 2 o'clock also recorded for later viewing.

Speaker 1:

This is the one I've been getting a lot of questions on the full update on the progress of HB 3054. That's the rent stabilization bill. I'm going to go into depth on what steps to take, who to contact and how to reach them. We'll have email addresses. We'll have kind of suggestions on what to talk about in your email and future actions coming up in the Salem area either on the 3rd or 5th of February for testimony. We'll post all this information on the OSTO website as it becomes available and the most recent information I have as of broadcast time on January 21st will be available Again the link to that show and after the link to access the program. If you happen to miss it is going to be there where you sign up. So I wanted to make sure everybody was aware of this. You can get more details on the OSTA website. This is a short little bit of information.

Speaker 1:

January 15th and January 21st, two Zoom podcasts coming up, two Zoom recordings will be made and shared with you. This is a very fluid situation. This is why things are kind of happening very quickly and I mentioned this was going to be the case when we started this whole process. The bill has been activated, made available, the new members to the House of Representatives have been seated, and their names are going to be included on the email addresses where you can contact them. Now you don't have to write to Rep Marsh, she already knows about it. She's presenting the bill.

Speaker 1:

The future direction we're going to be taking is to ensure all committee members are aware of your support and your need for such a measure and some actual factual information as to why, how it impacts the ability to buy food or medicine, things like that. So again, on the 21st, I'll go into detail on that, and on the 15th, we've seen some strong examples how a positive tenant organization can really cut through a lot of the stuff some of the landlords like to throw at people. A lot of it is fake hype and bogus ballyhoo, a lot of it's bluster and a lot of it is threats and simple intimidation. Having a strong tenant organization, that's kryptonite, and so I advise you to start one up. It doesn't cost anything. It takes a couple of folks to stand up and do it, and if there are any questions on that, at the end of either presentation you can always find both an email address and we're here to help you get your problems resolved. So I look forward to seeing you both at the upcoming live Zoom events One's tomorrow, january 15th, at 10 o'clock, and the other coming up in about a week, on the 21st, at 2.

Speaker 1:

Check the website at OSTA if you've got further questions. Watch our newsletter. There's lots going on. Keep your heads on a swivel. We look forward to seeing you soon and maybe seeing some of you up in Salem for testimony on the bill. Thanks, have a good day, stay warm and be safe. The preceding was a presentation of Retired Guy Productions.
