Bill Bateman Season 1 Episode 26

The countdown is on! With just four days remaining until the critical State Senate hearing on housing legislation, the Oregon State Tenants Association is rallying supporters statewide to make their voices heard. This pivotal moment represents the culmination of years of organizing and advocacy work that could significantly impact tenant protections throughout Oregon.

In this urgent update, Bill Bateman provides essential information about the Wednesday, May 7th, hearing at the State Capitol, emphasizing the importance of submitting testimony and the power of physical presence. The iconic "cow hats" that made such an impression during previous legislative actions are encouraged again - a visual reminder that tenants refuse to be treated as mere sources of profit. Practical advice for attendees includes wearing sensible shoes (Salem isn't exactly parking-friendly!), bringing necessities like water, and preparing for whatever the day might bring.

Beyond showing up, this update offers strategic guidance for maximizing impact through direct communication with legislators. Individual emails that identify you as a constituent carry significant weight, particularly when directed to members of the Senate Housing Committee. The message is clear: now is the time to act, whether through written testimony, in-person appearance, or direct outreach to decision-makers. This isn't just another hearing - it's a potential turning point for tenant rights in Oregon.

Ready to make a difference? Links to testimony submission forms and senator contact information are below. Join OSTA at the Capitol on May 7th and help fill the building with supporters standing up for housing justice. Be there, be part of it, be part of the solution!

Speaker 1:

Well, hi everybody, I'm Bill Bateman, part of the team here at OSTA, o-s-t-a, the Oregon State Tenants Association, and this is another short OSTA update. Well, the hearing is only four days away, wednesday, may the 7th, at 1 o'clock and, as promised, we're reminding you that right now it is approximately 10 in the morning. On May the 3rd. It's only four days away and we're reminding you. Now is the time to get that testimony in and to make your travel plans. If you're heading on up to the state capitol, you can sign up to testify in person. Online, you can submit your written testimony and I've posted the links in the description area of the podcast to do just that.

Speaker 1:

Me, I'm making the trip and I hope to see as many of you there as possible. We want to fill the building with supporters and if you still have your cow hats from the last time and really why wouldn't you Do wear them? They made an incredibly positive impression with the legislators at our last visit. You and I are not cash cows. The team is working on stickers we can wear inside and there's even talk of a group picture. Stay tuned for more on that. We'll announce it the day of the event and, as always, dress for the weather, make sure you've got water and check your fanny pack for whenever you're going to need to stay healthy and happy. For me, that means glucose tablets and a granola bar, and, of course, sunscreen is always a good idea. And is it necessary to remind us all? Sensible shoes? There's going to be some walking. If you haven't been before, it is not a parking-friendly city. Let's just leave it at that. Sign up to testify, make your travel plans and we hope to see you there.

Speaker 1:

So remember, now is the time to contact members of the Senate with phone calls or emails. It's important for the housing committee members to hear from you, and it's also a good idea if we can share this information with all of the members of the Senate with messages of support. It's preferred to send individual emails. Avoid a mass email to many, many recipients. Those tend to get overlooked. Make sure you send an email to your senator for whatever district you are, and note that you are their constituent. This is very important. Do reach out to each member of the Senate Committee on Housing and Development.

Speaker 1:

I'm going to include those in the sign-in area as well, just like I did last time, so the record is open. Did last time. So the record is open. Get those informational pieces sent in and cards, letters, phone calls, pack, the fanny pack. Get the extra pair of socks. We want to fill this place. Folks need to hear this. This is the culmination of years of work. Be there, be a part of it, be part of the solution. Let's make this happen. I'm going to see you up there. Have a good day, be safe. More information as it becomes available.
