Ready for real impact at the Capitol? We’re heading to Salem for a tight, practical training designed to help you tell your housing story so lawmakers listen—and act. With guidance from Oregon Law Center leaders John Van Landingham and Sybil Hebb, we break down how to craft a concise narrative, make a specific ask, and follow up in a way that builds trust and momentum. It’s a fast 30 minutes in House Conference Room H278, but you’ll leave with a repeatable framework and the confidence to step into legislative conversations with purpose.

We share why interim legislative days are a strategic window: fewer floor votes, more time for relationship building. HB 3054 showed that organized tenants can overcome long odds when we show up, write, and call together. Now we’re doubling down on visibility so manufactured and floating homeowners remain top of mind through 2027. From meeting at the State Street entrance to pairing first-timers with seasoned advocates, we detail the small habits that turn one visit into an ongoing dialogue with decision-makers.

To keep the learning going statewide, we preview a hybrid OLLI class through Southern Oregon University that acts as a boot camp for park leaders and engaged tenants. Expect practical skills—agenda planning, stakeholder mapping, simple data tracking, and Zoom coordination—so you can organize your park and plug into a broader network. We also share carpool tips, parking realities, and how to multiply our reach by sharing the update and subscribing. Show up, speak clearly, and stay visible. That’s how we turn personal stories into policy wins.

If this resonates, share the episode with neighbors, bring a carpool to Salem, and hit subscribe so more people find the movement. Your voice matters—ready to use it?

SPEAKER_00:

Well, hi everybody, it's time for a road trip. You're invited to join Osta in Salem on Wednesday, January 14th for a special gathering. Come on in, let's talk about it. Hi everybody, I'm Bill Bateman, part of the team here at OSTA, OSTA, the Oregon State Tenants Association, and you are having another, yes, it's true, another OSTA update. Well, we are having a special gathering in Salem. This is going to be during the interim legislative days. That's January 13th through the 15th this year. Wednesday, we're having a special gathering. That'll be on the 14th. It'll happen from 11 to 12. And it's going to be in the House Conference Room in room H278. That's on the second floor. And you don't have to scramble for a pencil. I'll put this information in the posting for the article. I'm going to have special presentation by John Van Landingham, member of the Oregon Law Center, and an Osta board member, and Sybil Hebb, the director of legislative advocacy at the Oregon Law Center. They're going to share insider tips on how to tell your story in a way that's going to get results. This promises to be a fast and focused 30-minute session, and it's something you're going to want to attend. And by the way, there are lovely parting gifts. That's right. Free Osta t-shirts will be given out to all member participants. Now, Tuesday through Thursday, it's part of the interim legislative days, as I mentioned earlier. That is something that we're going to have in a short legislative session. This is not about passing new legislation this year. It's about building relationships that are going to help us win real change in 2027. You see, legislators need to know us, recognize us, and trust us before we go back in 2027 and ask them to again fight for you and me, the manufactured and floating homeowners. Now, as you know, last year we proved that's possible. We showed up, we filled the rooms, we wrote the letters, we made the phone calls, and HB 3054 passed against all odds. So let's keep that momentum going. Landlords and their lobbyists are the capital routinely. Their familiarity matters, and so does ours. When lawmakers see us consistently, our voices carry more weight. Now is the time to stay visible, stay organized, and stay strong, and let's carry that momentum into 2027. So the link will be on the front telling you where and when. And I'm going to include an RSVP email. And that's going to be to one of our board members, Judy Annan. Judy, thank you for your hard work on this. An excellent job, as always. So please join us. Special Wednesday gathering, Salem in the state capital. If you want to get a van full of people together and carpooling, always a good idea. Parking can be a little dicey at the Capitol. So uh start planning now. Start talking to your friends. By the way, this is a good way to share the information. You can make phone calls, you can see people at coffee and uh walk around the park, but you can also share this program, share the Osta update, and uh while you're doing that, subscribe. The more subscribers we have, the more strength this program has to work for you. It shows YouTube and it shows our podcasting community that we are serious and we are part of a real movement. Share, subscribe, and plan to attend. Once again, Wednesday, January 14th, interim legislative days. That's the first thing, and that's the big thing. The second thing I wanted to talk to you about, and this will be real brief because we're going to go into detail a little bit uh later in the month, probably Valentine's Day is when you're gonna want to be looking for this one. We had talked about doing a class with Ollie, the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute. That would be through Southern Oregon University in Ashland, and it's going to be offered as a hybrid, which means you can attend in person or you can attend via Zoom. That's why it's kind of useful to share it statewide, like we're doing now. If you happen to live in, I don't know, Eugene, you can still hop on the internet and get all the good class information. The goal is to make this kind of a boot camp for people who want to get organized in their park and find out what they need to do to be an effective and engaged member of Osta and a powerful and engaged tenant. So those are two things coming your way. The big thing: pack your lunch bag, get the carpool plans put together Wednesday, January 14th. Gonna have a good program, good presentation, and uh if you want to get a group together and kind of walk around, introduce yourself, there's a way to do it. An OSTA board member will meet you at 11 o'clock, just inside the State Street entrance of the Capitol, and they're gonna provide you directions and best practices for meeting with legislators and their staff. So that's what's going on. This OSTA update, of course, is just one of many coming your way. Share these with your friends, talk this up, put it up on the bulletin board, write it in the dust and the dashboard if you think it'll do a good value to you, and we look forward to seeing you on Wednesday, January 14th. The preceding program was a presentation of Retired Guy Productions.
