The Color of a Lie by Kim Johnson

When Calvin and his parents move to a new town in Pennsylvania, he is not pleased. It meant leaving the life he had back in Chicago, but not only that, it means he can never really BE himself...because his dad plans for the family to pass, as white. The year is 1955, and Calvin and his family are limited in where they can live, work and even eat in the United States, bases solely on the color of their skin. But BECAUSE of how light their skin is, they have the ability to cross between to worlds. And Calvin really isn't sure he wants that ability, especially when it means he won't be able to be with a girl that he meets at his new school, a Black girl.

Recommended for students in grades 8 and up.
