Intro:
Hello Everyone! Welcome to The Game of Life Podcast; I am Alexandria Burek and I am your host.
Thank you for picking my show out of the millions to choose from; I am honored and excited to share this time with you! Now that the new cover art has officially debuted, I would love to hear any thoughts or feedback on it–leave a comment or shoot me a note!
In honor of December (arguably one of my favorite months), I’m excited to guide you guys on some of my favorite things to do and think about as we close out one year and look forward to stepping into another.
Personal Update:
Hosting Thanksgiving was amazing– I was very proud of the food I put out for my family, but by far the best part was having my grandma visit me. She and I are EXTREMELY close and I can’t put words to the love I have for her. I felt so special as she showered me with compliments; if only everyone I met were as impressed with me as she was.
One new little endeavor I am embarking on is running; I have decided I am going to run an 8k and a half marathon next year, with the ultimate goal of running a marathon in 2026. This is WILD for me because before this I HATED running. But something has changed. I love it. I am all in on it. I am actually craving it.
And with that, what better segway into “The Yearly Reset,” a four part series devoted to celebrating the moments that made up our year, looking back, reflecting on who we are, and most importantly looking forward.
I feel compelled to share a quote from Matthew Perry that I highlighted in episode 45 as the segway into part one of this four part Yearly Reset series:
“If you spend too much time looking in the rearview mirror you will crash your car”
I love this because while it is important to glance back, we should all be gearing up for a new year, a fresh start, and all that comes with that.
The Yearly Reset
So, I have broken this up into a four part series:
1 - Your Year Unfolded - Where we will look at each month and call out some of the accomplishments, firsts, challenges, and experiences that made our year
2 - Growing into Greatness - Where we will take a close look into our values, our definitions of love, success, happiness and more
3 - 2024 in the Rearview – Where we will explore ways to bring closure to yet another year
4 - Stepping into 2025: Where we will set goals, time travel, and set the intentions that will shape the fabric of our year ahead
SO - Part 1: Your year unfolded– I think it is important to first spend some time reminiscing on the moments of the year that made it memorable, special, and exciting while also acknowledging the challenges you faced (and hopefully overcame). You may want to jot a note in your phone or your journal, or even do a voice memo. I have this broken down into 3 steps. Here we go.
Step 1: Savor Your Most Memorable Moments
What comes to mind when you think 2024. Some of my highlights are starting this podcast, going to my first wealth conference, speaking at a conference, launching the Airbnb, going to the National Parks with my sister, solo camping in the Northwoods with my dogs, taking a trip with my best friends and their daughters, going to my first Haunted House, doing 21 days sober and hosting Thanksgiving (something I have wanted to do for years). These are the big moments, the big trips, the big accomplishments. What was big about 2024 for you? Did you move? Did you graduate or get a new job? Did you meet your person or celebrate a big anniversary? Spend some time thinking about and noticing what was so happy for you in 2024.
Step 2: Refresh your memory of by looking back on your pictures, calendar, and journal entries to take in the more subtle moments of the year
I take a lot of pictures of the most mundane moments, and actually cherish those just as much, if not more, than the big moments. I always enjoy looking back on the simple moments of the year. I also use my yearly planner as a way of noting special moments, priorities, and things like dates. I personally enjoy looking back though my planner to see what I found important enough to track or record. Then I also like to look back on the journal entries I made. This year I really journaled quite a lot, and I am really glad about that. I have made a concentrated effort to record more happy moments, wins, etc in my journals so I can have the joy of looking back on those–actually saying this out loud, I think I need to put that on my hot list for 2025–because typically my default is to go to the journal when shit is bad. What were some of the simple, less flashy highlights for you in 2024? Did you make any new dishes? Did you prioritize morning walks? Did you and your dog go for any adventures? Did you capture any especially cute moments of your family, your children, your friends, your pets? I personally have this one funny picture of my best friend, we were doing girls night out, and I was taking pictures and I just love this picture of her–very candid, very her, very us actually. And that is what this is about. Afterall, life is made up of all the tiny little moments–they too should be savored.
Step 3: Acknowledge your hurdles, challenges, and give yourself credit for your resilience
For me, at this moment I am honestly having trouble remembering the “challenges” which means 2024 must have been pretty damn good if I have to think about it, that or my mindset work has come A LONNNNNNG WAY and I am that focused on the positive–either way I AM FEELING GOOD ABOUT THAT. That said, there are a handful of things that I can recall that I wish would have gone a bit differently:
- I anticipated more success with selling life insurance policies and some of the other insurance things I invested in during 2023. Even with that, I would say some of these things are going to be more slow moving until they aren’t, others served as experiments or items that can be used as a part of a process of elimination.
- I was let down that I did not get a real estate deal this year. I certainly came close, learned invaluable lessons, and luckily avoided a catastrophe deal. So while I would have loved a more obvious success story there, I am sincerely proud of what I did do and grateful for all that I learned; I am firm in my belief that at the right time I will get the right deal with the right people.
- If I am being honest, I also thought I would be in a different place romantically than I am now. I am in no way complaining; I do believe that everything happens in its own time and of course, for my favor. HOWEVER, I am ready for love. I feel like I have SO MUCH love trapped in my now little body, that I am just bursting with love. Look out world. I have got a lot of love to give.
How about you? What was tough? Where were you a little let down? Where did you fall short? Did you have any major challenges like job loss or losing someone or a pet you loved? Maybe it was a breakup or divorce? Did you or someone you love get a diagnosis? Or was it something more internal. Sometimes you can become aware of something you’ve been ignorant to your whole life and that can lead to a lot of internal and external commotion as you sort through that. Take a moment and sit with those things too. Be proud of yourself for getting through it, is there anything you learned about yourself, your family and friends as a result of this experience? Maybe you now know, who is there for you and who actually isn't? It is important to spend some time (not too much time) thinking about these things as we move into the end of the year.
With that you guys, I am going to leave you be. Think about those big memories, look back on those smaller moments, and acknowledge the challenges you faced and overcame this year. Next week we will dive into Part 2: Growing into Greatness; here we will spend our time reflecting on our values and definitions of love, happiness, and success.
You guys thank you so much for spending this time with me. Thank you so much for your support of the show (rating the show, leaving honest comments, and of course sharing this show with someone you love).
Until next time…. Byeeeeee
