Hello Everyone! Welcome to The Game of Life Podcast; I am Alexandria Burek and I am your host.
If you are new here, thank you for checking out my show, if you have become a regular, welcome back and thank YOU! I am very excited to bring back the Food For Thought Segment. During this episode I will cover a particular book that helped me in some way; I’ll share how I found it, who I think it’s best suited for and some number of takeaways I think you guys would find useful. Quick heads up, I have a new feature called fanmail turned on, so if you guys have any ideas about how to make this show better, you can click the link in the show notes (it's at the top) and send me a text!
SO In today’s episode, we will explore Nick Bare’s book, 25 Hours a Day. This book definitely appealed to the hedonic side I have, the go one more, try harder, be better, do more. In reading this book, plucked a couple of valuable lessons I am excited to share with you today. I like that the author is a veteran; I love and support and honor and THANK our veterans who give us the freedoms we have–so shout out to the Veterans–I do have link for two organizations (Mission22 and 22 a day–if you guys want to donate).
In today’s episode, you can expect to
Before we get into the thick of it, I will kick it off with a VERY quick personal update.
Personal Update:
So today's personal update will be a little lighter and a little shorter. I also decided I am going to experiment with some sort of structure to these personal updates. Let's see how this goes for a little while.
Wins. I am always talking about wins and how we need to acknowledge them. So, for the foreseeable future, I will share three Wins of the Week; my goal is to spark something in you that causes you to celebrate something in your life.
Win number one: I seemed to let go of this very critical inner voice. I allowed myself to simply just be, without judgement or criticism and that has been so nice.
Win number two: despite getting what most would consider bad news, I managed to
have a GREAT week–like it did not rock me like it would have in the past, and that is so cool.
Win number three: I have been on one with networking and connecting and that always feels so good.
Gratitude. I harp on gratitude, so why not share something I am grateful for. This past week, I was taking a break from what I was doing and my dog Molly was perfectly laying in my arms and not only was I really loving the moment, but I was able to capture that picture. She is older, so for me, this is one of those very sweet moments, her and I were locked in. I actually looked good. Just perfect. So GRATEFUL for this moment with my sweet baby girl Molly!
Original Thought. I have a note in my phone where I have been capturing these original thoughts, revelations, whatever you want to call them as they come to me. AND I want to start sharing these with you guys. Here we go. “Your lessons become the value and the expertise you can share with others. These lessons and challenges give you credibility and authenticity because you lived it.” What a positive spin on life’s lemons.
Feature song of the week. I love music and I am always vibing with something new, so I will share a song that I can’t get enough of and hopefully you guys dig it. This week's song is: Blame the Moon by Hazlett.
With that. Let's get into this week's Book, 25 Hours a Day by Nick Bare.
Food For Thought
Book & Author:
Book: 25 Hours a Day: Going One More to Get What You Want
Author: Nick Bare
How I found it:
This one is a mystery. I do know that it was a part of my large batch of books I bought when I kicked off my life transformation. So it was either, TikTok, Amazon Suggestions, or something along those lines.
Who It's For:
This book is for the person who feels like they don’t have enough time, or resources, or energy, or things going in their favor. What I love most about this book, and Nick’s story, is how he really took advantage of the time that 99.5% of people would otherwise squander. I have been seeing a lot on my social media lately, things like, “It’s not your 9-5 it’s what you do from 5-9” by Alex Hormozi, or this concept of what you do with your discretionary time is what sets you apart. And I really think Nick and his book are the gold standard for taking advantage of the time we do have to go after our dreams. So with that, lets get into the takeaways today.
The Takeaways:
I am also going to mix up how we do the takeaways today. First, I am going to rapid fire, list off the things I bookmarked, these will all be direct quotes. Then I will wrap with a quick closing summary about how we can all apply these ideas to our own lives, with the goal of getting one step closer to a life we love. I would love for you guys to use the fanmail feature or leave a comment to let me know what you think about this!
Here we go!
- “If you don’t feed the cows, the cows die. It's a great metaphor for building a company, or a life, or a dream. If you don't feed those things, they die, too.”
- “We all have twenty-four hours in a day, but it’s how you choose to live those twenty-four hours that makes the difference.”
- “No one ever accomplished anything by sitting still and twiddling their fingers as they thought about their passion. There is no substitute for getting out and doing it first.”
- “Person A allows their body to control their minds. These are the people who respond to signals from their body rather than exercise control over it.”
- “Person B, however, whose mind is stronger than their body, is able to drive through the pain and weariness, they can ignore hunger pangs and focus on finishing what they started. These are people who do amazing things because their mind controls their bodies”
- “You make your own luck, and often that luck is the result of hard work no one else ever sees.”
- “It’s easy to analyze mistakes, but those mistakes were part of my process. Those were the things I had to go through to get where I wanted to be. Don’t be afraid to make your own mistakes.”
- “Society expects you to be a quitter if things don’t instantaneously go your way. I learned the hard way not to listen to the voices that want you to quit.”
- “Going into anything new requires the ability to hope. You’ve got to believe that you have a chance at making it happen, whatever that is for you”
- “Fear will paralyze you. It is like a wall that disables your ability to move forward and overcome it. Too many people allow fear to hold them back from their biggest aspirations or their greatest dreams”
- “The most valuable asset you will ever possess is time. It can’t be replaced, and how you spend that asset is probably the most important factor in your eventual success.”
- “Anything you get in life is a direct result of the time you took to get there.”
- “Success accrues over time. Be patient and don't expect to see results immediately.”
- “We’re responsible for the amount of work we put in and ultimately the results we get.”
- “Imagine what your life would look like if you, instead of dreading the pain and work that achieving whatever it is you’re changing requires, you reveled in it.”
- “Going all-in replaces escape plans with the steely resolve to see your way through to success.”
- “Planning months in advance allows you to establish short-term goals, down to daily requirements, in order to reach your longer term goals.”
- “If I could sneak in a couple extra new things a day, bump my volume up to three new things per day, I’d be adding 1,000 skills to my toolbox. Imagine where you’d be a year from now if you added 1,000 new skills to your skillset.”
- “So many people limit their chances for achievement by jumping into projects or a workout or anything in life and work limited by what they think are their possibilities. They have expectations about the limits of their mental and physical performance. These expectations are almost always far less than what they could actually accomplish if they pushed themselves.”
In summary, as I look at the things I bookmarked, I noticed the common theme of time, more so than when I was reading the book itself despite the title. What you get out of life really comes down to how you spend your time, what you invest your time in, and how long you are willing to stick with it. We can apply this to our careers, our fitness, our families, our mindset, or whatever it is you are after in this lifetime. My closing comment and observation, is that people really do waste time; we could all be living such a different life if we valued and protected our time, and used it in a way that aligned with our values and what we want out of this life. So think about that. How are you using your time?
