We just walked through Lent and Resurrection Sunday, remembering Jesus’ love, His sacrifice, and the empty tomb. Now we’re stepping into a new month, a new season—and around here that means rain, puddles, and that old saying: “April showers bring May flowers.”

When I was thinking about what to share with you this month, I kept picturing those gentle spring rains that rinse dust off cars, wash pollen out of the air, and soak dry ground so new things can grow. And I sensed the Lord whisper, “That’s what I want to do in your mind and heart—wash away what doesn’t belong so I can grow something new.”

So we’re starting a new series called “April Showers: Cleansed to Grow.” And today, in Week 1, we’re talking about how God uses His Word—Scripture—to wash your mind, to rinse off the lies, the fear, and the shame you’ve been carrying.

Hey fellow Light Bearers, welcome back.

Let’s be honest for a minute. Our minds get cluttered. Not just with to‑do lists and appointments, but with thoughts like: “I’m failing as a mom.” “I’ll never be enough.” “God must be disappointed with me.”

It’s kind of like that feeling when your house is messy and you keep stepping over the same pile of laundry. You can function, but you don’t feel at rest. Some of us have spiritual and emotional “laundry piles” in our minds that we’ve just gotten used to.

On top of that, we’re constantly being “rained on” by the world’s messages—social media, news, ads, even well‑meaning people—that tell us who we are, what we should fear, and what we should value. Without even noticing, we start to think more like the world and less like Jesus. Paul warns about this in Romans 12:2 when he says, “Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind.”

That means there are really only two options: either the world is shaping your thoughts, or God is renewing them. There is no neutral.

So how does God actually renew our minds? How does He “wash” us inside?

Ephesians 5:26 uses a beautiful phrase. It says that Christ cleanses His people “by the washing of water with the word.” Picture that: Jesus Himself, using the water of His Word to wash your inner life—your thoughts, your beliefs, your deep-down stories.

In context, Paul is talking about Christ and His church, like a bride being lovingly prepared, washed, and made radiant for her wedding day. The cleansing isn’t harsh. It’s not shaming. It’s tender, purposeful, and full of love.

And notice this: the verse says the cleansing happens “by the word.” God uses His message of the gospel and the Scriptures to wash us. When we open the Bible with a humble heart, it’s not just information; it’s like stepping under a spiritual shower where the Holy Spirit takes truth and gently rinses away what isn’t from Him.

Let’s go back to Romans 12:2 for a moment. Paul says, “Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind.”

“Conformed” is like being pressed into a mold. The world wants to press you into a mold of fear, comparison, and self‑reliance. But “transformed” is the word where we get “metamorphosis”—like a caterpillar becoming a butterfly. That’s not a surface change; that’s a deep, inside‑out change.

And how does that happen? Through the renewing of your mind. That means God gives you new ways of thinking, new reflexes, new default settings. Where you used to think, “I am on my own,” the Spirit begins to teach you to think, “God is with me.” Where you used to think, “I’m a failure,” He teaches you to think, “I am loved and being transformed.”

One writer described it as a “complete renovation” of your mind. Imagine God coming into the cluttered rooms of your thoughts with fresh paint, new light, and open windows. The old wallpaper of lies starts coming down, and the walls get covered in His truth instead.

Let me give you a simple example.

Maybe you’ve had a season where a particular lie ran around your mind on repeat. Something like, “I always mess things up,” or “If God really loved me, He wouldn’t have allowed this.” You might not even say it out loud, but it’s there, under the surface.

Now imagine you come across a passage—maybe in the Psalms or in one of Paul’s letters—that says something like, “The Lord is compassionate and gracious,” or “Nothing can separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus.” You don’t just skim it and move on. You sit with it. You read it again. You talk to God about it.

Over time, that Scripture becomes like a gentle, persistent shower on that one patch of hardened ground in your heart. Little by little, the hard soil softens. The old lie loses its grip. And in its place, a new thought begins to grow: “I am deeply loved, even in this.” That’s the renewing of your mind. That’s the washing of water with the Word.

So what do we do with this? How do we respond to this picture of April showers and the washing of the Word?

I want to invite you into a simple “daily rinse” this week—nothing complicated, but very intentional.

Here’s the practice:

1.        Pick one short Scripture passage each day. It could be Ephesians 5:25–27, Romans 12:1–2, Psalm 23, or a few verses from the gospels.

2.        Read it slowly, out loud if you can. Ask the Holy Spirit, “What do You want to wash off my mind with this verse today? What lie are You replacing?”

3.        Name one lie, and trade it for one truth from the passage. For example:

a.        Lie: “I am on my own.” Truth: “The Lord is my Shepherd; He is with me.”

b.        Lie: “God is done with me.” Truth: “Christ is sanctifying and cleansing His church—including me.”

4.        Carry that truth with you. Write it on a sticky note, put it in your phone, or say it to yourself throughout the day whenever the old thought shows up.

Remember, showers don’t just happen once a year. You don’t take a single shower in January and say, “Well, that should do it for 2026!” In the same way, our minds need regular rinsing with God’s Word. Not because we’re dirty and hopeless, but because we are loved and being made new.

Let me pray for you.

Jesus, thank You that You love us so much that You gave Yourself. Thank You that You are the One who sanctifies and cleanses us “by the washing of water with the word.”

For my fellow Light Bearers listening right now, I ask that You would begin a fresh work of renewing their minds. Where there are loud lies—about their worth, their future, their failures—would You gently wash those lies away with Your truth.

Give them hunger for Your Word this week, not as a box to check, but as a place to meet You, the Living Word. Help them step under the shower of Scripture and stay there long enough for the water to cleanse and sink in. Renew their thoughts. Renovate their inner world. Teach them to think more like You and less like the world.

And for the one who feels overwhelmed, who thinks, “My mind is too messy,” remind them that You are patient, gentle, and faithful and You finish what You start.

In Jesus name, Amen.

Friend, as you walk through these literal and spiritual April showers, remember this: You don’t have to fix your mind by yourself. You are invited to be washed by the Word, day by day.

You are seen. You matter. You are loved—by the One who is washing and renewing your mind with His truth.

See ya next time!
