When it comes to working in entertainment, there's a lot of hows, and they all boil down to how we navigate this wild industry. While how we follow our dreams is uncertain, how we roll along the way is in our hands. Welcome to how we Roll a podcast for actors by Casting Networks. How we Roll a podcast for actors by Casting Networks. Hello, fellow actors, this is Robert Peterpaul of Casting Networks. How we Roll, live and in person from the 40th Annual Ardeos Awards at the Edison Ballroom in New York City. It's a snowy evening and I did almost roll on some ice, but I gotta say the vibes are immaculate. Tonight we celebrate the contributions of casting professionals across theater, film and television. You are joining me here on the bustling red carpet ahead of the ceremony, as we glean golden nuggets of wisdom from all the VIP guests and have a lot of fun along the way, of course. Now, without further ado, let's talk with all the stars.
Speaker 2:Hi everybody, erica A Hart, new York City, 5'4". I'm a casting director and I'm so excited to be here celebrating casting professionals.
Speaker 1:I love that you had the hype too. You said a slight, I did. I'm going to turn the tables on y'all tonight, so I need to know. Yes, it's been an amazing year. It's going to be an amazing night. What do you think has been your casting moment this season? What's a moment that sticks out to you from your amazing work casting this season that you would like to share?
Speaker 2:A big casting moment was working on Jaja's African Hair Braiding. I think Black excellence, black girl, joy, black people just everything that it encompassed was pretty perfection. Just everything that it encompassed was pretty perfection, and just being in those auditions rooms were so exciting and so lovely that that was the highlight.
Speaker 1:Congratulations. I love that. Now I know you got a lot to do tonight, but we have a quick flash round. It's the 40th Annual Arteos Awards, so we're going to give you 40 seconds and we're going to go through some casting keywords. It's just like word association. If a piece of advice comes to mind, just really quick little snippets. Do you feel ready? No Perfect time to do it.
Speaker 2:Then let's do it Sounds like me before every audition. Okay, here we go.
Speaker 1:Headshots Look your best.
Speaker 2:Resumes Don't lie.
Speaker 1:Reels.
Speaker 2:Don't lie.
Speaker 1:Whoops Actor websites.
Speaker 2:Clean and simple.
Speaker 1:Social media.
Speaker 2:Big Brothers watching.
Speaker 1:Yes, it is Audition etiquette.
Speaker 3:Be polite, I love that.
Speaker 1:That's what Tara Rubin said to me. Analyzing breakdowns.
Speaker 2:If it fits, it fits. If it doesn't, something will come down the pipeline. Oh, I love that.
Speaker 1:Audition wardrobe.
Speaker 2:Look in the world, but I don't need a costume.
Speaker 1:Okay, cold reads. Oh, ding, ding, ding, you did it. They are terrible, terrible.
Speaker 3:Thank you so much. Have the best time. My name is Stephanie Gorin.
Speaker 1:And I'm Brendan Wilcox. We're nominated for two short projects for Fargo season five and and for the Apprentice feature film.
Speaker 3:So good, very exciting.
Speaker 1:Congratulations. I'm so excited for the both of you. Now, looking at this past year, I might know the answer, but we're trying to get people's casting moments. So what is a casting moment that stood out for both of you from this past season?
Speaker 3:we'll say Wow, I can't say. There's just one moment I think. Uh, the moments are when you have a director who watches, somebody who you're, you've been searching for forever and you're praying that you've got it right and they say, yes, we love them. That's the casting moment, that's the one we all dream about. When we've seen a thousand people and and you're hoping, well, you should have a few hundred, yeah, totally agree with that Some cosigning.
Speaker 1:Yeah, that's like the best moments, like all that work you find, work with all these actors to find just the right person for it, and then director season, like that's exactly who I was thinking of. They're perfect for it. Let's do it. I love that. I think you're both perfect. For, before I let you go, this little surprise game. It's called Casting Keywords and because we're at the 40th thank you Annual Ardeos Awards, you're going to get 40 seconds. We're going to start the timer. I'm going to say a keyword and then you just say, like a piece of advice, sort of like word association, whatever pops into your head.
Speaker 3:Well, let's do it Sign forth. So we don't jump on each other.
Speaker 1:Sure, yeah, that think we're ready. Thank you, bryce. Okay, headshots and resumes. Oh, resumes.
Speaker 3:Resumes Make sure you've got all your special skills on it, because that really comes in handy.
Speaker 1:Yes, Don't lie about them. Reels Short, and sweet, to the point. I love that. I need to be liked that way. Actor websites.
Speaker 3:Actor websites come in handy, but I think it's really about the audition. That's what's important.
Speaker 1:Audition etiquette Be polite, be nice, be good in the room and we'll be the same way. It's always goes both ways. I love that Analyzing a breakdown.
Speaker 3:I think a good way to analyze a breakdown is to not just look at your own character, but try to look at the others. Just quite often you don't get the script, and so you don't have a lot to go on, especially if it's a secret project.
Speaker 1:Smart. That's like a detective work. Oh time, we did it. That was so great. Thank you both. You win my phone. Well, hope you win tonight. Thank you both for being here, congratulations.
Speaker 5:Nice to meet you. My name is Spencer Galdoni and I'm a casting associate at the TRC company and I am very honored to be here. I have three nominations tonight, so I'm so grateful and what a high you must be on with the big news Congratulations. Thank you so much. Yes, I'm very happy. It's a very exciting time for the company and I'm so proud of our new core partners and just also the legacy that Tara has created. You know I just feel so honored to be a part of that. I always like to tell people. I feel so honored to be a part of that. I always like to tell people I feel so lucky that I got cast into her office. You know she is just a wonderful way of assembling people and I'm proud that we get to kind of continue on her legacy.
Speaker 1:So, yeah, that's so sweet. She's one of our first episodes on the podcast and she was incredible. She's so good. She is a dream. I feel so lucky. Well, what a casting moment that was. Jump to our surprise game. Sure, it's the 40th annual RDO, so we're going to give you 40 seconds to play casting keywords. I'm going to say a keyword from the casting process and then you just do word association and say the first piece of advice that pops into your head. Okay, you ready, here we go Headshots.
Speaker 5:Headshots. They should be 8x10, colored. Everybody prints them on 8.5x11 paper. But it's one of those things if it ain't broke, don't fix it, and we want it cut down to 8x10 staples. I love that. Cold reads Ooh, that's good. It's one of those. Just be in the moment. If we ask you to go out and do a cold read, just take your time, process the material and just come in and be you. Do your best, yeah totally.
Speaker 1:Tara said she doesn't understand them and we were like everyone needs to be warm Callbacks.
Speaker 5:Callbacks. I love callbacks. It's the best process because we get to kind of really narrow in on who we're envisioning and who could play the role, and I love it. It's a great experience. Okay, we did it.
Speaker 1:We're out of time. Yeah, no, that was amazing. Thank you so much. It was so good to see you have fun tonight.
Speaker 6:My name is Bernie Telsey and I'm a casting director.
Speaker 1:You must be so excited to be here tonight.
Speaker 6:It's always such a joy, I mean coming for years, and it's just a great event because it gets the whole community of casting directors together.
Speaker 1:I love that. Well, if you'll indulge me, it's the 40th annual, so we're going to put 40 seconds on the clock and I'm just going to play a little game with you. It's called casting keywords. So I'm going to say a keyword from your process of casting and you just say the first thing that comes to your head Advice, word, association which are no rules.
Speaker 3:You ready, but only a one-word answer.
Speaker 1:Yeah, oh, we'll go fast. Okay, headshots, love them. Resumes Okay, love them, resumes, okay. Reels Helpful, hopefully. Actor websites Sometimes. Social media presence Careful Ooh, that's a good one. Audition wardrobe, professional being off, book Helps Cold reads I like, oh, okay, I like being warm. Callbacks Even reads, I like, oh, okay, I like being warm Callbacks Even better. Making choices, smart idea and slates Needed, definitely needed. Thank you so much. It's such an honor to meet you. Have fun tonight.
Speaker 4:So I'm Jeff Jostelson and I'm excited to be here to celebrate all the casting directors.
Speaker 1:Yeah, what a great time we had last year. Your speech, I have to say, was incredible. Oh God, I was locked out. So I'm locked out right now. This is perfect. So we're going to do a quick casting game called Casting Keywords. I was trying to do 40 seconds on the clock because it's the 40th REOs, but that's too much time, so we're doing 20 seconds. I'm going to say a keyword from the casting process and you just say the first piece of advice or word that comes to mind Great, so it's like word association. Okay, okay, ready, yeah, here we go. Headshots oh God, I've already failed. I get this. Um, lots of them. Resume, helpful information. A reel Also helpful information. Audition wardrobe your best luck. I love that. Oh, we're at time already. Whoa, I love that. Whoa, no Hi.
Speaker 7:I'm JC Clements. I'm the director of casting at Steppenwolf Theater Company. I'm a nominee tonight and I'm just thrilled to be supporting and being with all my fellow casting directors here in New.
Speaker 1:York, congratulations. What do you feel like was your casting moment this past year? If you had to pick one, I'm sure there were a lot, but what stands out to you as being like a big moment?
Speaker 7:I think probably casting Laurie Metcalf in the premiere of Little Bear Ridge Road that premiered at Steppenwolf in Chicago by Samuel D Hunter. It was just great to get Laurie in the room and work with Joe Mantella, the director. It was a lot of fun.
Speaker 1:What amazing talents you know, either Laurie or Joe. What would you say you learned that would be helpful for actors, Like a piece of advice. I mean, they're both sort of masters of the craft.
Speaker 7:I think, laurie, what she does that's just amazing is that she brings the truth to everything. There's no acting, she's just there, present and doesn't try, she just is.
Speaker 1:Yeah, I love that. Well, I hope you just is tonight and have a great time. It was great to meet you, thank you.
Speaker 8:I'm Liz Lewis.
Speaker 1:The Liz Lewis icon. Come on, and what are you excited for tonight? I?
Speaker 8:really would say that you know seeing everybody and it's just a real fun party to get to reconnect with people and I love that.
Speaker 1:Well, speaking of real fun, we have a bit of a surprise game. It's called casting keywords and so I'm going to read you some keywords from the casting process and you're going to get like 20 seconds just to say like quick advice or word association, whatever comes out of your head. All right, cool, I was doing 40, but that was too much. Ready Headshots.
Speaker 8:Make them as natural as possible.
Speaker 1:Resume.
Speaker 8:Be truthful, reels, keep them short and your best work.
Speaker 1:Asking questions about the material.
Speaker 8:Perfect. Yes, you should.
Speaker 1:Submission notes.
Speaker 8:When we ask for notes, please give us notes.
Speaker 1:Choosing your best take for self-tape.
Speaker 8:It's usually great to get somebody else to look at it that maybe is an actor friend so that you can pick your best take.
Speaker 1:That's great advice and actor websites.
Speaker 8:Oh, having them is great, but making sure that when you're submitting that, it's a hyperlink and you can just press on it.
Speaker 1:I love that. Well, I'm going to press on. Stop here, because you did a great job. Thank you so much. It was great to meet you.
Speaker 9:I'm Eden Espinosa and I'm so excited to be presenting tonight at the RDO.
Speaker 1:That's so exciting. Okay. So we have a really fun quick game. It's called Casting Keywords. So, from a stellar performer POV, I'm going to shout out a casting keyword. You're going to get like 20 seconds on the clock and then you just tell me a piece of advice for actors, or like a word association. Whatever pops into your head, we're going to roll with it. We're ready. Okay, let's do it. Baby girl Headshots.
Speaker 10:Yourself.
Speaker 1:Resumes.
Speaker 10:Don't lie.
Speaker 1:That's a common thread here. Audition etiquette.
Speaker 2:Oh, be kind.
Speaker 1:I love that Cold reads. Go with your instinct Self-take, choosing your best takes.
Speaker 9:Ah my advice is don't give yourself too many shots. I like to say, if I was in the room right now, what would I do? So I really only do about two to four takes.
Speaker 1:I love that and I think we're out of time. That was incredible. Thank you so much, Hi.
Speaker 4:I'm Andrew Terraciano, and I'm here to help honor my friend, josie Rodriguez, who has been a fantastic cast and director for Blue Bloods for 11 years. Amazing, I know.
Speaker 12:And hi, I am Sammy Gale, andrew's TV cousin, and I'm also here to honor Josie Rodriguez and the amazing work that she has done on Blue Bloods.
Speaker 1:I love it. It's all in the family. Now I wish I had more time to ask you about your audition processes and all that. But to kind of distill it, we're going to play a quick flash round game. It's called Cast keywords. Here we go and I'll alternate. So it's not too crazy, Unless you want to do buzzers, but that's fine. Headshots, Stressful Reels. Make them Get your content out there. Social media presence Important Asking questions about the material.
Speaker 12:Super important. It's great to have the direction of the casting director to understand what they're looking for.
Speaker 1:Best self-tape tip. Have fun with it. Choosing your takes for a self-tape so hard A journey. Someone else to do it Literally. Thank you so much. I think we're out of time, but it was so great to meet you both and go kill it. Have fun tonight rashad nailer.
Speaker 6:I work for the tiltsy office. Uh, why I'm excited to be here. This is my first time being nominated. Um, I just joined the casting society of america about like eight months ago, so congratulations. Yeah, yeah, yeah, it's really thrilling yeah, it's amazing, so exciting.
Speaker 1:I want you to go enjoy yourself. So I'm going to play a really quick game with you. We're going to put about like 20-ish seconds on the clock Can't count so we don't know if that's accurate and then we're going to play casting keywords. So I'm going to say a keyword from the casting process and you tell me a piece of advice for actors that just like pops into your head, or word association. We're going to see what happens. All right, here we go. Cuckoo Chew Actor websites. Concise is your friend, the less the better. I'm going to play it to myself as an affirmation, asking questions about the material. Read the script first. Cold reads. Follow your instincts. Analyzing a breakdown.
Speaker 6:Read the entire breakdown. Most of the information is all there. Self-tape tip Make the camera your friend.
Speaker 1:I love it.
Speaker 6:And then, finally, the last one I'll say is not getting in your own head Meditation.
Speaker 1:On that note, I'm going to go. Bmps Awesome. That was good we harmonized. Thank you so much. It was so nice to meet you. Have fun tonight. Thank you so much. It was so nice to meet you. Have fun tonight. Thank you so much. Congratulations Hi.

Speaker 1:I love that beautiful projects. I love that. I'm Ross Shanker, I'm Kate Geller's associate and we are nominated for a film called Omni Loop that Kate co-cast alongside Taylor Williams, and I'm nominated as their associate casting director. Congratulations, I'm so excited for you. So we don't have much time together, so we're going to distill this in a little surprise game called Casting Keywords and basically I'm going to say a keyword from the casting process that you'll know and you just say the first piece of advice for actors that pops into your head, or whatever pops into your head. Honestly, it doesn't matter. So we're going to put like 20 seconds on the clock. Here we go. First one headshots.
Speaker 14:Make sure that we see you, we see your eyes really well and that you're emoting through them.
Speaker 1:I love that Resumes Cleanly formatted. Staple them back to back in all four corners with your headshot on regular paper stock so that we can write notes on them. I love that. I love the specificity of that. Actor websites.
Speaker 14:Keep them succinct actor websites Keep them succinct. Pictures, your media, your resume, how to contact you both personally and through a rep, and interesting facts about you not the whole world.
Speaker 1:I love that. A fun fact goes a long way. Last one will be self-tape tip. Ooh, alliteration. Have the reader. I learned this from Kate. Have the reader speak quieter because they are likely closer to the microphone and you want the focus to be on you. I love that, especially if it's you recording your own voice, because you don't have a person Just kidding. That never happens. Thank you both so much. Congratulations again. Kevin Metzger-Timpson, 5'10", new York City local, I love that. You got it. You and Erica Hart are the only ones that sit in the height and I appreciate it. We got to let you go on your way. We're going to do a fun flash round called casting keywords. You might have seen Tara play it. I'm going to say oh, thank you, bryce. I'm going to say a keyword from the casting process and you just say the first piece of advice for actors that pops into your head Great, all right, ready 20-ish seconds on the clock, not really counting. Okay, headshots, look like yourself and look personable. Actor websites, you need them.
Speaker 4:They can be easy Website resume pictures video.
Speaker 1:That's it Making choices, do them, do it Self-tape tip.
Speaker 6:It's not about the gimmick.
Speaker 1:It's just about doing the good work. Not getting in your own head for an audition it's near impossible but breathe and know that we're rooting for you. We want you to be good. I'm going to breathe right now. Thank you so much. It was so good to see you. We want you to be good. Yes, we want you to be good. I'm going to breathe right now.
Speaker 11:Thank you so much, it was so good to see you have fun tonight.
Speaker 1:Congratulations. Thank you.
Speaker 11:Hello, I'm Michael Cyril Creighton. I'm so excited to be here because I love casting directors. They gave me my life, so I'm very happy to be here celebrating them.
Speaker 1:I'm that. What do you remember about your audition process for Only Murders in?
Speaker 11:the Building. What stood out to you from that? It was great. I mean, I originally went in for a smaller role and then they called me in for Howard and I had a Zoom, because it was in the middle of the dark times and the Zoom was great, everybody was super friendly. And then I had a callback and John, the showrunnerner, gave me a pretty large adjustment. A very uh sort of uh turned everything around and, um, I went for it, I did it and then I waited a really long time to find out. I got the job, but it felt incredible.
Speaker 1:Yeah, yeah, we're so glad you got it yeah, I'm gonna fan favorite. I was like this person needs more screen time. Now you got it. Yes, uh, before I let you go, can you quickly just give us your best self-tape tip for actors? Oh, if you have one.
Speaker 11:Yeah, I would say don't do what you think you're supposed to do. I love that. Don't do what feels natural to you, because it's the worst when you try to just fit into what you think you're supposed to do.
Speaker 1:That's what I said to my parents my whole life. I'm not going to do what I'm supposed to do, Daddy.
Speaker 4:Thank you so much.
Speaker 1:Such a joy to see you. Thank you, thank you.
Speaker 13:Have fun tonight. Hi, I'm Thea Washington, casting director in television and film, and I'm excited to be here. I'm a nominee for the Great Christmas Light Fight on ABC and Disney.
Speaker 1:So good Such joy you're bringing to people, especially with that show. We don't have much time, so I want to do a quick casting flash round game. It's called Casting Keywords. Basically, I'm going to give you a little keyword from the process that you know so well and you're going to say the first piece of advice for actors, performers, real people that pops into your head. How real can I keep it though? You keep it. I would love for you to keep it as real as you can. Okay, okay, headshots.
Speaker 13:Headshots Okay, Do not over-edit your headshots. Show up looking like your headshots. Please do not catfish me because I'm going to be upset with you.
Speaker 1:I love that Catfish me Resumes.
Speaker 13:Resumes. No one really knows, or listen. Don't fumble your resume. This is a small town, you know. People are investigators, all that stuff. Do not lie Present as yourself and try to tailor it to the special job.
Speaker 1:Being yourself in an audition setting. What's your advice for that? Because people put it on for the camera, you know, especially in reality.
Speaker 13:Okay, being yourself, know yourself and decide if you should be yourself. Is it appropriate, is it not so? Yes, you know, just take a little temperature and my favorite term is read the room.
Speaker 1:Read the room. Well, I'm reading the room and I got to let you go because I'm clogging this carpet up. Thank you so much. I think you're amazing and you're so much fun.
Speaker 14:Thank you, I'm so excited to see you Okay.
Speaker 16:Hi, I'm Tara Rubin.
Speaker 1:The Atacom.
Speaker 16:I'm Mary Sugarman, next to the icon, the other icon, the legend.
Speaker 10:The legend and the icon.
Speaker 1:Together we're sugar-coated. Why are you both excited to be here tonight at the REOs Awards?
Speaker 16:I'm always excited when we can represent at our office. We had some nominations, but it's also really great to like be in a room of like-minded people. We don't get to see our peers very often, so this is really fun All the agents and managers and other casting directors. It's like a big social event for us.
Speaker 1:And you deserve it. Congratulations on all the acclaim. Loved your speech last year. Everything is so great. I know I got to let you go. So we're going to play a quick game. You might be familiar with it, casting keywords. I played it with you before. I'm going to say a keyword from the process you know so well, and then you just tell me the first piece of advice for actors that pops into your head.
Speaker 13:Okay, we're going to start the timer.
Speaker 1:Oh, I like that. We can do a little buzzer, a little, no, but I think that's more organized. She's like don't? Okay, we ready, All right Headshots.
Speaker 16:Not as important as you think they are.
Speaker 1:Actor websites.
Speaker 16:Important, but as long as you have some presence on social media and we can find you easily, not tantamount.
Speaker 1:Making strong choices.
Speaker 3:Always a good idea.
Speaker 1:I love that Social media presence Important, so that Social media presence.
Speaker 16:Important so that we can find you. Sometimes we have to educate our teams about who you are. It's great if you've got great examples of your work out there.
Speaker 1:That's a great answer. Self-tape tip before I let you go.
Speaker 16:Keep the website and the social media presence fairly professional.
Speaker 1:Oh, I love that and self-tape tip.
Speaker 16:Self-tape tip. Don't stress about it. If we can hear you and we can see you, that's all that matters.
Speaker 1:I love that we can see you. That's a good slogan. Well, I can see you both. You look so great and it was so nice to see you have fun tonight. Great to see you.
Speaker 13:Thank you, have a wonderful evening. Thank you so much. Hi, I'm Josie Rodriguez and I'm the associate spotlight winner. Yay, welcome to Spotlight.
Speaker 1:Is On you. Why are you excited to be here tonight? I think I might know why.
Speaker 13:Just to celebrate casting as a whole and celebrate my career so far. I'm just really excited.
Speaker 1:Okay, I'm excited to play this little game with you because I've got to keep moving. So we're going to play casting keywords. Basically, I'm going to throw a keyword out from the casting process and then you just say the first piece of advice for actors, performers, that pops into your head. All right, you ready, start the clock. We're not really counting, okay.
Speaker 13:Headshots, Two of them white collar, blue collar.
Speaker 1:Oh, that's very helpful. Resume.
Speaker 13:Full. Put everything on there, all your skills and your height. Social media.
Speaker 1:Social media. Just have fun, but be careful. Okay, my best audition tip.
Speaker 13:Clear, great reader confidence.
Speaker 1:Ooh, I love that. Choosing your best, take Just whatever your gut tells you. Oh, I love that. Well, my gut's telling me we're out of time, but it was so nice to meet you. Thank you so much. Thank you have fun tonight.
Speaker 9:Thank you, jessica Fox, thigpen, casting director, and I'm here for the Great Lillian Hall.
Speaker 1:Oh, I love that. Now I want to keep it moving, so we're going to play a fun game called Casting Keywords. Basically, I'm going to throw some keywords out from the casting process you know so well, and then you tell me the first piece of advice for actors that pops into your head.
Speaker 14:All right.
Speaker 1:Okay, you feel good. All right, let's start. I think I remember us at this point. Let's start the time on the clock. There is no clock, uh, and whenever you're ready, headshots headshots um clear.
Speaker 9:But I like the ones that are kind of different, where it's just not the cozy right in the face, kind of thing. You know, some attitude or a little emotion in it okay, resumes. You need them.
Speaker 1:Yes, you do, and unfortunately you've got to keep updating them. If you're lucky.
Speaker 9:Yeah, I think there's a format that's good to follow. So many people forget to fit the different components to it. Training I want to see training. Oh, I love that.
Speaker 1:Well, how do you choose your best training, choosing your craft? Do you have advice for that?
Speaker 9:I think you just you need to probably visit all of them and see what resonates with you, because I think they're all good but it's individual. It's almost like I hate to say it going to a gynecologist you got to find the one Glad you said it or a psychiatrist, finding the one that fits you.
Speaker 1:Yeah, I love that. That's personal. Well, I got to let you go, but thank you so much. It was so nice to meet you.
Speaker 17:I'm Daniel Sui. I'm excited to be here because I'm being honored tonight with a Marion Doherty New York Apple Award, and I'm also up for a Best Casting Award as well.
Speaker 1:Congratulations. If I could have you cheat out a little bit, of course. Bit Speaking of cheating out, what is your best piece of audition advice for actors? We have a lot of actors that listen. I know you get the question a lot, probably, but right now.
Speaker 17:It's a great question. I would say preparation more than anything else. It's prepare more than you think you have to prepare because it's your chance to be good and you owe it to yourself as an actor to do that. So I would say preparation. I love that.
Speaker 18:I'm Jinx.
Speaker 9:Monsoon and I'm excited to be here because I worked my whole life to be on Broadway and they finally let me in.
Speaker 1:Talk about celebrating casting. You've been someone who's just come in and shaking everything up this season in the very best way. As we're here to celebrate casting directors, I would love to play a very quick casting game with you, called Casting Keywords, sure, so I'm going to throw some casting keywords at you and then you give us the best piece of advice you have for performers out there listening Okay, good, all right, cheat sheet Ready, not really counting, I don't think Headshots.
Speaker 18:Oh you know, be approachable, be sexy but approachable. Approachable, be sexy but approachable.
Speaker 1:Approachable, approachable, approachable sexiness. I love that.
Speaker 19:Resume Only the stuff that really counts. Learn when to let go of certain projects.
Speaker 1:Oh, my goodness Bye.
Speaker 19:High school Actor website oh have someone do it who's good at websites, that's a good tip, and then self-tape audition tip.
Speaker 18:Oh, approachable, approachable, approachable, charming, delightful. You got to show them in a video that you're someone they want to work with.
Speaker 1:I love that. Now do you have any advice for actors out there to be themselves in an audition, to bring themselves to it Like it's hard to do that sometimes.
Speaker 18:I like to tell myself this If you're right for the role, it's going to shine through.
Speaker 3:If you're not right for the role, but they love you, that'll still be something someday, you know, you never know what seeds will fertilize.
Speaker 1:Ooh, hopefully it becomes a sunflower. I love that. Thank you so much. It was so nice to meet you. You're so fun. Congratulations on everything.
Speaker 4:My name is Frankie Ramirez and I am so excited to be here amongst all of these incredible shows and nominees. It's just an honor to be among them.

I'm going to say some keywords and you say the first piece of advice for actors that pops into your head based on the keyword keyword. Okay, ready you ready. All right headshots, amazing resume resumes, clean and organized. That's good self-tape tip uh be yourself be yourself, be yourself, you ever see.
Speaker 1:Just friends, ryan reynolds sorry, I'm lagging out. Uh, choosing, choosing your best we're blocking out together.
Speaker 4:Choosing your best takes um trust yourself, and it's usually the first one that's so good.
Speaker 1:Best audition advice in general Be yourself as well. Be yourself. Well, I'm going to let you go, be yourself and have a good time. Thank you so much. This was fun. You're the best. Can I give you a?
Speaker 10:hug. Well, hello, I'm Stephanie Clapper. I'm so excited to be at the RDS this year to celebrate my friends in casting and my two nominations.

Speaker 10:well, so you know what you're coming in for and what to prepare.
Speaker 1:I love that.
Speaker 10:Headshots. Make sure they're in focus. They show you as you are and how you will come into the room.
Speaker 1:Audition etiquette coming into the room.
Speaker 10:Be friendly. Do the best work you could do, don't worry.
Speaker 1:Speaking of not worrying self-tape tip, Do you got any advice there?
Speaker 10:Oh, this is so hard, but I think, keeping it simple there too, make sure it sounds silly, but really make sure you're well lit and that your sound is well balanced. And it doesn't need to be fancy, it just needs to be useful. Oh, I love that.
Speaker 1:And finally I'll just say choosing your best take. We could spiral there a little bit as actor.
Speaker 10:You can spiral there. Usually, I find the first one tends to be the most successful. Do no more than three and give yourself a little air to breathe. It's never going to be perfect, but it's going to be good enough to feel good about sending it out.
Speaker 1:I love that Well, you're making me feel good just seeing you. Thank you so much. I hope you have fun. See you soon. Lots of love to you.
Speaker 15:My name is Mauko Kwaji and I'm from Ghana, west Africa. I've been nominated for two categories and I'm excited to be here.
Speaker 1:Congratulations, I'm so excited you're here. So, in honor of casting professionals everywhere, tonight we're playing a fun little game called Casting Keywords. So I'm going to it's kind of like word association I'm going to throw a casting keyword out there that you'll know and then you just say the first piece of advice for actors, auditioners in general. Okay, you ready, we're going to put 20 seconds on the clock Headshots.
Speaker 15:My advice to actors on there is that it's very important and it should be updated periodically. Resume it needs to be updated constantly so that we know your last work. Self-tapes Make sure your sound is good and your lighting is correct.
Speaker 1:Oh, that's very good, analyzing a breakdown as an actor.
Speaker 15:If you don't fit, don't submit.
Speaker 1:Oh Wait, that's like a rhyme If you don't fit, don't submit. You say that a lot. I love that you put that on a bumper sticker. It just jumped up my head it just on top of my head. That's really good. You should honestly coin that trademark it, or I'll take it and then your your best piece of audition advice for actors in general.
Speaker 15:Um just go in audition and forget about it oh, I love that too well.
Speaker 1:Thank you so much. Don't forget about me, friend. Now have fun tonight. So nice to meet you hello everybody.
Speaker 18:This is asia luke here on the ones and twos. I am a reality TV casting director and casting producer and I'm being nominated for the Great Christmas Light Fight.
Speaker 1:Congratulations. I had so much fun with your friend earlier that was up here. Yeah, yes, what a good time. It must be so much fun to work together. It is One thing I was curious about in regards to reality casting is that you're looking for people to bring their authentic selves a little bit of sparkle for the camera, maybe. What's your advice for people out there auditioning for reality shows on being themselves on camera and not like putting on something extra?
Speaker 18:Right? Well, the number one thing is a lot of people don't understand how to pull their stories together. You know, like when we talk to people, they'll be like, oh, it's nothing interesting in my life, and then it's like next, you already talked yourself out of the whole situation. Really take the time to really understand what makes you unique, um, your hobbies, the things that make you stand out and be yourself. Like everybody has a story. This tell the story. Take time to really flesh out all of your life experiences. You know anywhere from, like how your family is set up, where you grew up. Was it a rural place, Was it a city? Did you go to Ivy League? Did you play sports? Like, do you collect anything interesting? Do you collect anything interesting? Like, there's so many things you know that you can work on to really flesh out that story. That's the most important thing and just be yourself, absolutely that's such great life advice in general.
Speaker 1:So everybody rewind that I'm gonna go open a journal a fresh one and write all those questions down and the answers maybe hi jordan carlos by the 10, based in brooklyn, new york, where all of us run survive.
Speaker 4:I'm excited to be here for some hosting this thing, and this is my first time here, so it's just a lot of different emotions running at once and they're all positive.
Speaker 9:Hi, my name is Alina. I'm Jordan's wife and I'm excited to be here to support him.
Speaker 1:PhD. We've got to get that on the record. I'm going to throw out some keywords from the casting process and the whole goal is to get some tangible advice for actors listening, but we're going to give you like 20 seconds to do it. I'm not really keeping track. I'm here for you, I'm here to help. I love this. Okay, so whenever we're ready, clock started, here we go Headshots.
Speaker 4:Headshots. Okay, so headshots are 8x10s or 8x11 glossies. That are the casting director. They should be appropriate to your age. That is the hope. Some pens are not Shoot. She was there when I got my first set of headshots.
Speaker 1:Oh, I love that, but what about when you saw his first clips like a reel, an actor's reel? Do you have any advice on that?
Speaker 9:Oh my gosh, I don't know, I'll keep it on you.
Speaker 4:I'll keep on Nurse Jackie once in 2009. It was like man. I was so booked and busy, very blessed, and I was so nervous I couldn't even watch myself on TV. I remember this so well. So, yes, this one has been with me, even though I couldn't handle my first time on TV. I love that. Okay, best self-tape tip. Best self-tape tip Go to Elliot in the Navy Yards. He's amazing. Brooklyn Self-Tape Actor's Studio. You see how nervous I am to say it, because I'm so excited to tell you Leave it to a professional if we can afford it.
Speaker 3:That's really great advice, because then we spiral it always comes back from there just saying I love this guy so much and I'm like it's like a good experience, that's a healthy experience.
Speaker 1:It keeps you too healthy, as I that's a healthy experience keeps you too healthy, as I was going to say. Is this your built in reader? Because I know with my wife it's not always the best vibe, but I'm like please help me do it again.
Speaker 11:I've broken her on the wheel, and so now he has somebody to do that.
Speaker 4:I have outsourced it. She's done her time. She's done her time and it's like you just have to go to the industry professionals. You know she's amazing and with to theater school like herself. But I go to professionals so they can hear me whine Amazing.
Speaker 1:Oh yeah, there we go. The last question I'll say is what do you think makes a great host? I need some advice.
Speaker 4:He's the great host. No you're a very good host. You're asking follow up questions. You're interested? Don't even worry about it. Don't even worry about it, just like. I think a good host is just someone that's like the most comfortable person in the world. If they're, they're trying to be the pace car for the comfort level. So that's at least my mo tonight is just be super comfortable, super cash and that's it.
Speaker 1:I love that. Well, you're gonna kill it. I can't wait to see you shine, and it was so nice to meet you both congratulations thank you, I'm kaisha heebly.
Speaker 19:I'm so excited to be here tonight because casting is one of the most underrepresented talked about parts of the industry and they do some of the most important work okay, and I'm so tempted to hold your nail.
Speaker 1:Wicked style, these nails are sick, hold space. We're holding space right now. I gotta say can you please just shout out your handle. You're the most amazing creator, performer, extraordinaire. Tell the people at home where they can find your content.
Speaker 19:Yeah, you can find me at Kaisha Creates.
Speaker 1:Yes and it's so good you won't be sorry. One thing I'm wondering for you is you've like, truly, I so admire how you create your own content and you don't wait for a yes, yeah, what's your advice to actors on doing that?
Speaker 19:I kind of like taking their power back yeah, you know, I think the thing that is really important for artists is to constantly be creating and not limiting that creation to only when you get past in something. Creation can be happening all the time, whether it be on the internet or off. So I think about that, like what can I be making? How can I pour into myself as an artist that has nothing to do and is not connected to a job that I've booked?
Speaker 1:Oh, I love that. I'm going to write that down and tattoo it to my face. Okay, so really quick. It's getting quiet. I think the show's about to start. We're going to play a surprise game. It's called casting keywords. Basically, I'm going to throw out some keywords you'll know from the audition process and you say the first piece of advice for actors that pops into your head.
Speaker 13:Okay.
Speaker 1:So whenever you're ready, you good. All right, headshots Be you. Resume Be honest Actor real.
Speaker 19:Showcase your talent honestly. Ooh, self-taping, don't do it more than three times. Choosing your best tape. Don't think too hard about it.
Speaker 1:Ooh, that's really good Dressing the part for an audition.
Speaker 19:Dress how you would dress in real life.
Speaker 11:Ooh, I love that. Finally, audition etiquette.
Speaker 19:Mm, listen. I want to say more but, like, listen, pay attention to read the room and pay attention to what is happening.
Speaker 1:I love that. That's good life advice in general. Thank you so much, Ren. Thank you for tuning in to how we roll. Do you have more questions about working in entertainment?
