The most powerful force shaping your future might be a single sentence you repeat when you’re under pressure. If you’ve ever caught yourself thinking “I have to hold it all together,” “It’s too late for me,” or “I’m only valuable when I’m useful,” you already know how an internal narrative can quietly steer your choices, your relationships, and your sense of what’s possible.

We get practical and reflective with a simple coaching exercise I call “Find The Script.” Together, we walk through four clear steps to support identity change and personal growth: name the sentence you keep living from, trace where it came from and what it protected, calculate the cost it charges you today, and write a transitional reframe you can actually believe. This is not about motivational slogans or pretending life is easy. It’s about building a truthful bridge from an old coping strategy to a more aligned way of living.

You’ll leave with concrete journalling prompts you can use right away: write your script sentence, finish “this protected me from…,” list the real costs you’re paying in energy, rest, intimacy, and options, then draft one reframe to live for the next week. When the inner story changes, even slightly, your decisions often shift and your options expand.

Subscribe, share this with someone navigating change, and leave a review with the sentence you’re ready to stop living from.

Welcome And Episode Focus

SPEAKER_00

Hello everyone, my name is Colin Bolton, and I'm the founder and CEO of Nextplan Institute. Welcome to Pivot Point, where we explore how internal narratives shape identity, possibility, and change, and how reframing your story can open a more truthful path forward. Today's episode is called The Story You Keep Living: How to Reframe Identity in Times of Change.

Find The Script Exercise

SPEAKER_00

In this episode, I want to do something a bit more reflective. I'm going to guide you through a simple exercise I call find the script. Because the stories that shape our identity are often running in the background until we bring them into the light.

Step One Name The Sentence

SPEAKER_00

Here are the four steps. If you can, pause and actually write these down as you listen, or come back to them later. Step one, name the sentence you keep living from. What's the line you repeat when you're stressed? I have to hold it all together. It's too late for me. I'm only valuable when I'm useful. Don't soften it, write the exact sentence. Step two, trace where it came from and what it protected. Most identity scripts were once adaptive. They've helped you succeed, survive, belong, or stay safe. Ask, when did I learn this? What did it help me

Step Two Trace Its Origin

SPEAKER_00

avoid? And what did it help me earn?

Step Three Count The Cost

SPEAKER_00

Step three, calculate the current cost. A script becomes a problem when it keeps demanding payment long after it stops serving you. What does that sentence cost you today? Energy, intimacy, rest, authenticity, options.

Step Four Transitional Reframe

SPEAKER_00

And step four, write a transitional reframe you can believe. Not a motivational poster, a truthful bridge. For example, I'm learning to ask for help. Or I'm allowed to build success that includes rest. Or I'm becoming someone who chooses alignment over approval. New behavior becomes easier when the inner story changes. Once people stop introducing themselves to life through an outdated narrative, their decisions often shift. They choose differently, protect themselves differently, and relate to the future differently. The story matters because it quietly shapes what you believe you're allowed to build. When people ignore this part of the process, they often create unnecessary friction. When they honor it, they usually create more clarity, more energy, and more sustainable movement.

Turn Insight Into Practice

SPEAKER_00

So what do you do with all of that? It helps to move from insight to practice. You do not need to fix your whole life in one sitting, but you do need a way to turn reflection into action. So here are a few practical starting points that you can take from this conversation. Write your script sentence in one line. Under it, write this protected me from and finish the sentence honestly. Then write the cost today is and name two to three costs. Draft one transitional reframe, you can live for the next week. If you only take one thing from this episode, let it be this, you are not your oldest coping strategy. You are the person who can update it. And when your internal story changes, even slightly, your options expand. Not because life gets easy, but because you stop negotiating with a narrative that was never meant to be permanent.
