[0:12] Welcome to Stargate SG-1 for the first time. Still not a Star Trek podcast. My name is Jeff Akin, and I'm watching Stargate SG-1 for the first time. And I'm Brent Allen, and I'm watching Stargate SG-1 for the 47th time. But for the first time, I am watching this for the sci-fi messages that Stargate's trying to teach us. Those lessons that hold up a mirror to society. That's stupid.

[0:35] Give us hope that things could be better in the future, which is interesting in a show that is set in the present day. Or just teach us how we can be better human beings to one another. Let's see if we get any of that this week. We're watching Show & Tell. This is an episode that I think one of the groups that we've met in the past are going to come into the SGC, and they're going to show something to them, and then they'll tell about it. Hey-oh! Oh, wait. So we'll see what happens. Brett, can you enlighten us with some cool facts on Show & Tell? Yes, Episode 20, Season 2, Show & Tell. Getting towards the end here, Jeff. Original air date january 27th 19 while my note says 1993 that is not correct this would be 1999 pulled one from the annals yes yes this episode written by uh jonathan glasner one of the big names i've talked to you about another big name in this particular episode peter de louise is the director yeah we had him just a few weeks ago yes yes uh in this particular episode peter de louise inserts himself in as a cameo oh really i'll point him out when we get there does he look like his dad that's what i don't tell me i want it like that's i'm excited just let you try to find him yeah yeah okay you've been tracking lately some of the gear upgrades that we've been getting.

[1:47] There's actually a pretty cool gear upgrade that is one of those things like it's just always been at the sgc to me like and i and i forget when i watch these early seasons like they didn't have it until turns out this episode i'm like oh yeah that's where that is okay cool like nice because it just it just becomes a thing that's just always there you know so anyway be on the lookout for that you will i'm i promise you you're gonna reckon you're gonna know exactly what i'm talking about as soon as you see it it might be like the first thing in the episode or something like that i think like you know like the uav it's like literally starts with hey here we're flying this thing through yeah there you go yeah it's kind of kind of on that level kind of on that level so with that Jeff why don't we go ahead and jump into this episode if you're just joining us for the very first time first of all welcome to the show we're glad you're here we're glad you made it and the way this works is Jeff and I are going to go watch this episode for the first time, Like right now, right now. No, we're not going to stop the video. We're not going to pause the video, go away. And then you're going to see some cut where it's going to come back and do all this.

[2:47] We're going to do it live right now. If you're one of our phenomenal patrons over at patreon.com link down in the show notes, you guys will be able to watch the full on edited version. However, if you're watching the free version out on YouTube, you're amazing. You're awesome. You're going to get the YouTube cut. If you're listening on an audio podcast, you're about to gate into the future. We're going to meet you on the other side. You're going to miss the episode itself, but you'll get to hear all of our conversations. My first time reactions, Brent sci-fi messages that he finds. I can't wait to see Peter Deloise. Let's get in here and start show and tell.

[3:40] Oh, unoperized. I love the response time on this. This is not normal. That's like 20 dudes, like fully armed. This really feels like the first appropriate response to an unoperized gate. I did not give the order to open the iris, mister. I did not open it, sir. Well, close it. Give me the knocks. Get that iris closed, Sergeant. I'm trying, but the computer keeps overriding it.

[4:19] Oh, is it the game? Is it the what? The game master. Is it Dwight Schultz? No, it's not. If he has a blue arrow on his head. Oh, it's low. Yeah, right. It's Aang! It's Aang. Oh, he was the dude who peeked out. Who peeked out? Literally, he peeks out. I'm like, that's a weird scene. Like, kind of, oh, what's this? Okay, now I've got to pay attention to him.

[4:52] Yeah, he doesn't look like his dad at all. Not at all. Not at all. Not a little bit, yeah. Not even a little bit. Good cameo, though. I have to check you for things you probably know nothing about. Oh, that's a bad assumption. Just in case. I like that she has to like do anything to him She should just be next to him and can sense it Yeah But also maybe it's not foolproof Necessarily Or maybe the contact helps her feel it She doesn't have black gloves on.

[5:23] I can't sense any knack with him. As far as I can tell, he's clean. What's he doing here? Perhaps you should ask him. I'm here to warn you. Dun, dun, dun! Little kid giving a warning is the scariest thing ever. Little bald kid with a monk's robe on. I think they made him change clothes. Or maybe he just had long johns on underneath. No bomb in the chest? A little biohazard in the tooth, maybe? Check for both. He's no threat to us as far as I'm able to tell. Hey you catch those two references yeah yeah because we had the the tooth guy right right uh-huh ryak was his name and then uh i already forgot what the other reference he said yeah cassie the bomb the bomb inside yeah yeah i tried those goes to tell you you know okay so here's a theory guys get the red yarn here's the theory the gould are willing to use kids in that manner yeah jms is a gould somebody check his neck just say he's a snakehead dude i'm telling you jms is a gould mark that that we need to clip this and put this out on the whatever they're calling it these days the stuff yeah the social media stuff that's gonna whatever yeah and to what i just said i think jack's probably giving the perfect face for it just right here just.

[6:40] Like you're so dumb all right let's go he's pretty weak i'm guessing he's malnourished what's your name atreyu your name is colonel i always want his name to be atreyu i don't know I'm on a quest. How'd you know that? My mother told me. Did he just point? Oh, I pointed at Sam for a second. Your mother? Yes. She says I am to speak only with you. You are one who can be trusted. Well, thank you, ma'am.

[7:04] Good for him. You play along. That's what you do. That's a dad right there. For many weeks, she observed you all until your team returned with the one called Tonane. Based on your actions at the time, Mother believes... You catch that? You remember who he's talking about? I remember that was the indigenous guys, right? Yep. Yep. I always forget the name of the metal. You didn't even know that there was another person walking through the gate with him at that time. Spirits. That was the episode. Yeah. Yeah. Tonane. Dude, the veins in his forehead where they've shaved his head are like... It almost looks like they need to make up that job. It does. Like, it almost looks like Talos. What do I call you? Yeah, right. I do not have a name. But I don't think it's just the lights are going through his skin a little bit. Yeah. It's not much of a name. No. It's more of a description. Yeah. Thanks for that. That's kind of what I was saying. Mother and son. Mother says YouTube house. So this kid apparently has, like, a pretty big role on X-Files. Oh, really? I have. I don't know how many episodes, but, like. He's gone. What was his name? He definitely has the creepy vibe. Yeah. Charlie. I like Charlie. It's a good name. Can I be called Charlie? Ooh. No. Uh-uh. No. No. Mm-mm. Yeah. Danger, Will Robinson. Danger. That's what you want. Yeah. Okay, Colonel O'Neal. I'm Charlie. Or can I call you Chuck? Like, we can just stay in the realm. How about Bobby? Something, yeah. Frankie? Totally different. Muhammad. Let's go super common. Bobby Jack.

[8:28] Jack? Atreyu. Yeah. Yeah. He doesn't have a name. He doesn't have a name. He's the childlike empress. He doesn't have a name. He needs Sebastian to come. Where are you from? Planet called Retalia. Retalia. Is it possible that he's some sort of psychic?

[8:46] Check Daniel's hair, man. He's got like a Wesley Crusher quaff going on today. It doesn't make much sense. Will the Gould attack the Ritu so the Ritu rebels attack us? We need to determine the validity of what little information the boy's given us. Jump up! get that a lot why he was there he's a jaffa he wants to kill me just like he killed the retu no no no no no he's a good jaffa in fact he saved my life one time he hit me a few times by now no i didn't say oh for crying out loud nope hey out loud um look mom said you trust me right well i'm telling you teal is okay in fact all my friends here at the base are okay she's over there, I always love that part Mother says to trust only you And the other members of your team Good Charlie.

[9:42] I am pleased to meet you. Bro! I am sorry, O'Neal. I must leave this room. In all of my years, I have never experienced a symbiote so disturbed. There is something unusual about this child, O'Neal. Think? I advise you as extreme precaution in his handling. I was planning on it. You have seen it yourself. In the hands of the Goa, the child is nothing more than a potent weapon. Yep, you called that out earlier. This is the part where normal humans have what is called the reticular formation it's the part of the brain that determines alertness our perception of things charlie's is twice the size of ours and that could explain why he knew you had a son and he also explained why he had such an effect on teal's symbiote so what he's got esp some telekinetic thing going on i don't know, those are two very different things by the way he's just giving her option that is the difference Between a teep and a teek. Yep. It's you. Nice job. I'm going to pull in a Star Trek reference. He has an Esper rating. Tell us why the Ritu want to attack us. That's old school Star Trek. It's not the central authority of the Ritu. It's only the Ritu rebel faction. All right. Why do the rebels want to attack us? Because the glowing-eyed people attack the Ritu. The ghoul. I can't look at Daniel in this episode, man.

[10:56] The rebels believe that the glowing-eyed people are too powerful to destroy directly. They believe they can only be destroyed by attrition. Attrition? What does that mean? Attrition is the gradual diminution of strength or number by... I know what the word means. I meant in context. My God. They must want to kill all possible hosts. They must think that if the Gua'uld have no new hosts to infest, that they'll eventually die out. By attrition? Yes. Mother created me to serve as an intermediary. She created you? Yes. She really was thrown together. She hoped I would be older before we came, but my accelerated growth caused my body to begin failing, so we had to come sooner. Captain, you're our physics expert here, is it possible? Creatures standing here that we can't perceive? Yes. Theoretically, it is possible, sir, yes. But the good news is they won't fall through the floor. Exactly. Matters exist both in particles and in waves. How did your mother control the iris? Mother came ahead of me weeks ago. Like, that's Hammond's. Then when the time came, she opened it. Security, period. She just typed it into the computer. That is how the computer behaved, sir. As if it was being overridden by another console.

[12:11] Oh stand out dad made herself known somehow i assume that came from mother, probably other ways she could have uh revealed herself pick up a thing and have it float across like draw something on the wall perhaps the tokra can be of assistance it could be our best hope captain carter dr jackson signal the tokra yes sir, hey 10 points if you remember where that device came from where it came from yeah did you see it yeah it was the communication thing and that was the um i forget their name but the saw guy who's right the uh i hate you so much why because you're a thousand percent right, the tolan tolan that's it.

[13:02] I pay attention to the show. Oh, it's dad. Dad, we have a little bit of a situation and we may need Selmaq's help. Selmaq, Selmaq, Selmaq. I thought maybe you just wanted to see your old man. I do, dad. But this time we do need your symbiote, Jacob. Nice to see you too, George. No offense, old friend. Really tired. Oh, I love it. I love it. Are we going to count that? Yes. We gotta count that. That's two for crying out louds in this episode. Charlie? It's alright. It's okay. That's right. He's not a ghoul. It's a tokra. We're okay. Dad? Yeah, he's feeling the agitation. It's too much. It's almost like my stomach after eating that Asian buffet earlier. I just gotta get out of here. There is a Rito in that room. This will illuminate the Rito if it is there. Dude, that is straight out of Halo. Yeah, totally. Straight out. Follow me.

[14:06] Please don't hurt her. Look at a shadow. My God. I pulled you far. She could have hurt us a long time ago if that's what she intended.

[14:16] Tok'ra Kree. Tok'ra fall back. Kree is their word for like everything. I owe you an apology. I wouldn't lie to you, Jack. That's why Jack is trustworthy. Charlie, I want you to do me a favor. I wouldn't lie to you. What? You and your mom stay in this room until I get back. Crying's okay. If you do it out loud. She says the boys of your culture do not cry. Oh, man. Not true. Thousands of dollars in therapy because of that. There's an official list of reasons for which crying is a good thing. Mother is leaving. Now, see, that's a good reason. I think I belong with you, Jack. Hmm. Look, kid, I'm not looking for a pet. Charlie. I know I'm an awesome dad, but... Before she leaves, do you think she could tell us where we could find these rebel retos? She says she'll show me the address. That'd be great. Jack, could I be your son for a while? Aw, buddy. You know what? I'm going to go with the makeup department and put these little things all over his face and his head. Got to make him look sick and fading away. Yeah, I'm going to take back everything I said earlier about that. I don't think you'd want that. Yes, I do. He'd be great. I can tell. Let's deal with his redo, and we'll talk about it. Okay? Okay. Okay. That's sweet.

[15:39] Also, he was. That was like peak dad out of him. I like that they attach those little halo guns to the mouth. T-E-R. I like that they have the line on the ground that says, stand clear of this line. Which is where the whoosh goes.

[15:54] Music.

[16:08] This is a recon like a neat cool acting choice this i think is yeah so there you know i so i'm in the middle of directing a play yeah and i was i was just talking to my actors and stuff and i was talking to them about like what what is your character doing what is the tick what is the what is the object that you're that is like your character's object that gives you things people tend to have things just here watching jack everything he's doing um like he's fussing with his earpiece he's cleaning his glasses like he's looking down checking his gun a bit of overkill george uh that's all the stuff that somebody would do maybe ten of them there and he's like he's like something's wrong with my earpiece like he's okay listen it has nothing to do with the script there's nothing in charge of this operation just bringing some realism to the whole thing. Right? Scanning with T-E-R. He could have easily just stood there. While he's having this conversation, he's cleaning his boxes. This is recon mission only. As you do. Not engage the enemy unless you have no choice. What you don't do is use your fingers. You're too clean. Do your best for them not to see you. Mount T-E-R shows immediate gate vicinity clear. Well, you've got a PA just off camera ready to actually support you. Then, then.

[17:25] Do they really have to go running? That's not easy. I'm like, You just come through, like you come through the same way. Oh, whoa, no, no, Jacob's there. Full speed, man. Okay, so you've got one of these rings on your planet. You've got the device in front of it. Do you literally have nothing else around it? I know. On your planet? Like Abydos is the only place it was built into a pyramid or something, and that made sense. But so many places, it's in the middle of the woods, it's in the middle of a desert place, nothing has built up around it, but it's still there in good functioning, working order that has been maintained. They do look like shadows. Yeah. It's almost like starship troopers, too. Yeah. Well, that's usually what I think of when I watch this. But now I've been in Babylon 5 and the shadows. Those TERs have incredible range. So you would say threat assessment is high. Oh, yeah. Okay. Yeah, Mother's in there and just... Teal? She got the handprint thing going. Why do you not have a TER?

[18:41] Literally, as soon as he was feeling that, he should have done this. Because he was feeling it. You could see him feeling it, and he was just whatever. And now all of a sudden, she hits the button, and he can start scanning it. Now. Now it's okay. Why do you think his hand is so far outstretched? It's straight cocked elbow. Because that actor has clearly never shot a firearm before. Oh, wow. Just got blasted by the way. Great pull. That was a great stun. His legs were together. Well, it took me your early warning device and then, TE our airway around everything. Stand down, code 9.

[19:20] Take the gun. Take the gun. There you go. A lot of them got through. Love that. I like that they still put Daniel into the... Include him in the... He can play with us, too. Although, the one thing we never really see from Daniel is what training is he getting in combat as a result of being here at this. What is he doing when he's home? Yeah, it would be cool if there was, like, the boxing episode, you know, that comes up and Daniel's like, Well, I've been working for a while to do this thing. Or just out at the shooting range. Or playing Codiscot. You're about A7 West. Do you think they have any, what is it, GNDN pipes in there? It goes nowhere, does nothing. Jack, what happens if they come to the door behind us? I'm looking at the pipes. Don't do that!

[20:25] Wow. Jeff, would you want to be host to a Tok'ra? To a good gold if given an opportunity? I'd do it. I think I would, yeah. Would you be a Trill? Would you be host to a Trill if you had the opportunity to? I would, yeah. Yeah. You just have to have a strong enough personality to still maintain yourself. Well timed. Just because her reproductive organs are on the inside, inside the outside, doesn't mean she can't bounce a grenade off the table that has been overturned into an open elevator door. Is that Mother? I don't think it's Mother, because if it was, the kid would be screaming as soon as they came in. There's Mother. One of the other Ritu got her. Easy, sir. He ain't got no symbiote to help him fill that up. Oh, there he is. He killed the kid. Doc! Doc!

[21:37] Music.

[21:43] Give me a hand over here. Let's go! You know, it sucks, but from a story standpoint, it's the right thing to do. Hey, I want to be your son for a while. Oh, I don't know. How do you deal with that in the context of the show? His pulse is very weak. You kill the kid. That way it's not an actual answer you have to have. You have to remember, sir, he has two major organs about to fail. Oh, come on. He will grow up with the advantages that great wisdom brings. Two key words there. Grow up. The Tok'ra are probably the only way that'll happen, sir. All right, so here's the question. Is this kid going to be cognitive to consent? Or are they just going to throw it in there at him? And even if he was cognitive, would he consent? And at what age does he get to consent because this kid's probably like a couple of months old in reality yeah they'll get you more as soon as they become available.

[22:36] I think seeing him up and walking means they could ask him for consent but I mean, there really is that like age it's okay to be sad when you're saying goodbye to a new friend I wanna stay with you Jack and if you do you'll die I'm just going to take you to a place where you can get well. But you know what? What? Chicken butt. I'll come visit. You'll come visit. Okay. I guess. Jeff just crapped on this touching moment. This is a great moment, by the way. We talked about it. He gets some opportunities to really, really show why he's the lead. This is one of those episodes for sure. Sure. when he's not just out there kicking ass and taking names, but he's actually, like, doing what he's got to do. The Ritu are guileful creatures, and you're at the disadvantage of not being able to sense them, as my Jaffa friend and I can. Well, we've installed the hand scanner so they can't open the iris, at least. You are only one, Tilk. Please, be diligent. They will not give up. They will attempt to send more infiltrators. Great call-out, man.

[23:49] You've got to be the alarm system which begs the question you know Braytac's out there sowing these seeds of discontent amongst the Jaffad when do you start trying to recruit more I really like the way they're using him you know sparingly but it's always important when he shows up talking about Jacob? Yeah is this the third time you've seen him now? Third time overall, second time as a Tok'ra like you saw him when they made him and then this time yeah right well no he can't.

[24:20] Music.

[24:29] Oh, for that one. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Mm-hmm. Okay. All right, Jeff, we have just watched Show & Tell for the very first time. Jeff, you got something over your shoulder there, pal. Oh, I do? It's kind of hard to make out. It's kind of hard to make out. Oh, God! It would be wild if that was Mother. She passed away almost four years ago. Yeah. Weird. i didn't i didn't tell you that we were going to be going back watching you know the first couple episodes of babylon 5 again i know like for those weren't watching along we had the uh the reto they're like a slightly greener version of the shadows and they got the invisibility thing going on and yeah yeah much more powerful weapons you know what it is it's it's the shadows from the northern country okay right yeah the northern continent yeah it's a little yeah they had a little more makeup on a little more a little more head ridges or whatever a little ethnically more ethnically diverse than what we've seen forever since then yeah yeah so the point of this episode right is that we have a new ongoing threat the retu and uh it's a cool concept for an alien like we didn't talk about it during the episode but they are basically 180 degrees out of phase with us so we can't see them can't detect them.

[25:51] Anything but they somehow can see and detect us even though we're also 180 degrees out of phase and it's pretty wild what they're doing so the story was that the gould showed up and wiped out all but wiped out the retu and this rebel group came up and they're like we got to bait we got to beat the gould but we can't they're so much more powerful than we are even though they have these like mini nuke weapons and stuff like that but i mean let's not let the details in the story bog everything down here but they said we're going to beat these dudes by attrition and the way to do that is to eliminate all the potential hosts wow so you've got billions of humans in tauri you've got the the unas and his race that are there we know that they can be hosts are there others like are we just talking complete genocide of everyone except the retu right wow so and i loved how the episode ended and that like hey so you fought off these retu but they'll be back and you're not going to know when it comes because your early detection device is one dude who happens to be with sg1 and out on missions all the time right it's a good luck good luck.

[27:01] But the the thing i loved in this episode like the the retu again i love the kind the concept It was well done the con we had the concept last week with the sound thing, which was a cool concept and horribly executed like this offensively executed. This was great. This was really well done. And when they go to the planet and they see like the army of them, it evoked thoughts of starship troopers, like just really great sci-fi callbacks and touch points in this one.

[27:34] So the cool thing, though, in this whole episode, like that's the story and the plot stuff. We got to see the Tok'ra. We saw Jacob again. Cool stuff. That was great. I love that. But we got to see Jack O'Neill do more stuff than be a smart ass who kicks ass. You know what? I need a T-shirt that just has a picture of Jack O'Neill with his sunglasses on. Smart ass who kicks ass. Right. I need that T-shirt. We can make that happen. We can make it so. But that's what he does most of the time. I've talked about it a couple of times. He doesn't get a lot of meat. But when he does, right, I think about cold Lazarus. I think about this. I think about the one where he's pushed up against the thing, you know, and I liked that episode, but I forget what it's called. The alien shot out at him. But when he gets his moments, God, you see why Robert Dean Anderson is the lead on this show.

[28:24] I, I want Jack O'Neill to be my dad. Right. He was great. Rolling with the mother thing just kind of assuming it was an imaginary friend and he's like i'm gonna i'm not gonna judge i'm not gonna be weird i'm just gonna play along because it's real to this kid so i'm gonna make it real as i can and then just you know connecting with him talking to him and the kid's crying and this is a thing i i'm gonna i want to talk about and i don't know if you have it for your sci-fi messages but to me it's the biggest piece of this episode but they talked basically about i mean it's a there's a dirty word but toxic masculinity in a way of like you know dudes of an age my age your age and in the neighborhood like we grew up and you don't cry right like it's not good they challenged that here right and they talked about it but it was so cool how he did it the kids like i'm crying and i shouldn't cry he's like there's a definitive list of reasons you should cry number six is this and number five and just rolled with it it was so great jack one you'll be a great you know you know what's you know what's great about that um on a masculinity level there's no phrase long time ago only masculinity can bestow masculinity.

[29:35] Upon others you know it it's it's not just masculinity it's it's whenever you're being admitted to the club you can only really be admitted by the members of the club kind of a thing it's it's that general idea right um there's the the the toxic idea right which was very much alive and well in the 90s it still is in many ways today you know um i i gotta admit i find myself often with my son going son you need to suck that up man yeah don't you be out here crying uh-uh it's not okay you cannot show weakness like i find myself saying that especially when it comes to football and there's i'm not i don't think i'm wrong about that but jack does a great job of going, no, that's not true. Here's all the places that you cry. You just don't need to be crying over here. Yeah. I think it's, it's such an important point and it's a thing I've spent a lot of time on myself personally and working that like, I don't care if you're a dude, not a dude, whatever.

[30:30] We all have feelings and emotions, and we have to feel them. They are all valid. They are all okay, and they all need to run through us. But we're not animals, right? We can have emotional regulation and say, hey, I feel this.

[30:45] I'm not going to push it down. I'm going to set it aside, and I'm going to come back to it later. You're in the middle of a football game, and you take a big hit. You don't stop and cry. You rub some dirt on it. You finish the game, and after you're out of the locker room and you have some time, you then then you let it go you feel the whole thing it's interesting how you talk about that with jude where you're talking about that with your son where you know don't cry you know don't show weakness all those things i and i i wonder how much of this i'm as i'm thinking this i wonder how much of this is like gender uh you know normal is like kind of stuff where with my daughter but she'll cry she'll get upset and what i always tell her i'm like hey do you have something you want to talk about something something on your mind you want to share a thing no no and i'm just sad. Well, it's okay to be sad.

[31:31] It's okay to be sad. It's okay for you to be crying. It's all right. And when you talk about it, it helps. And I'm always here for you to talk to. I want to hear the things you have to say, but like I actively encourage her to feel and express those emotions also in an appropriate time and place, you know, like don't do it at the dinner table. You know, you're, you're old enough now that you're not going to have a breakdown at the dinner table, but you can excuse yourself and stuff. And so she, she's developed a habit that comes up or she'll get upset and she'll kind of bite her lip and she'll say, I need a little alone time. And she'll go in her room and we give her that alone time. And it's great. But this episode showed that, you know, and it showed it, it showed it in a nineties way in the nineties that I can see that seed planted and how like in a guy like me, how it's, it's germinating here, you know, quarter century later. There you go.

[32:20] I think that's really what this episode did.

[32:25] And i liked it and it did i think what it did for me wasn't what it intended to do but it was really powerful and it's the thing i'm going to take out of this one yeah yeah this is an episode for me um, i i can't say i personally love this episode or i like this episode but i watch this episode every time i do a rewatch yeah you know what i mean like i like it enough i don't hate this episode by any stretch of the imagination um there may be some more other there may be some other episodes I want to get to a little sooner.

[32:57] Uh this episode's a little heavy it's it's a little heavy so you know particularly like i said when i'm kind of going through i i don't like the heavy usually i want just kind of light fun you know the the good times let's let the good times roll and that that tends to be what i'm looking for but i do like this episode i like how it it comes about and comes through i i it's interesting to me that you picked up on all of that because i think a lot of times our judgment of an episode really comes down to how it made you feel part of why one false step last week was so bad is that it was boring and evacuated all feeling from me i walked into that with emotions and then halfway through i'm like i have nothing i'm a shell there is nothing here yeah you didn't make me mad you didn't make me upset you didn't make me happy you didn't make me cry you didn't piss me off you just made me not care maybe as apathetic as possible yeah because that was kind of the tone you were going for here you know here i thought they did a great job of endearing charlie to jack my god taking his son's name yeah we suddenly start caring for charlie we see what's going on you know there you don't really know what's going on with the whole mother thing and.

[34:13] Oh actually she's real oh he's actually got you know he cares for his mom if we'll put it that way you know and then she's like yeah you probably ought to stay here with your own kind okay cool he's gonna be here but oh now we've got all this other stuff going on and yeah it's it's it's decent it's solid when we walked into this you mentioned there's some new tech yeah was that the ter that was not what i was thinking of but that that is certainly a part of it uh but no um they They upgraded the Iris computer.

[34:44] Oh okay the hand thing okay so you'll see them every time they go to open the open iris they put the they put their hand on it oh i said i forget when i re-watched this on the early episodes that they don't have the iris thing because it just becomes a normal normal because it's just how they open i mean and they'll you know opening the iris and you get a shot of a hand going onto the onto the palm scanner cool you know yeah it didn't register as much as the ter and because i'm like oh this is kind of cool and it's pretty powerful and they're gonna get some more of these with their zip guns and stuff too so kind of cool yeah yeah in addition to what we've talked about here did you pull any other sci-fi messages out of this one you know not not really um it's just one of those episodes man you know and we've often talked about how uh with with star trek specifically because that we kind of use that as our uh the the thing because that's what you do with star trek is you overanalyze the episode totally for everything and we we particularly back in Babylon five, when we were still doing deltas and we were specifically looking for what we called star Trek messages.

[35:45] I think one of the things that has helped me is I, I actually, Jeff, I will tell you in my notes for Babylon five, even right now, the, the category, like the section still says star Trek messages really because I copy and paste the template and I've just never changed the template and people are like, well, go change it right now. I probably should, but I'm not. so i probably tend to say star trek messages when we're doing babylon 5 just because that's what's right there what it says really what i mean is sci-fi messages and i have sci-fi messages here on our notes for um stargate so i i probably ought to change that i'm not promising i will, but uh there are star trek episodes that would not be episodes that get a whole lot of deltas Right. Delta's where our rating as far as like how strong the message was, how strong did it do? And the toxic masculinity, that's a neat conversation to have. I don't know that. Yeah, I was going to say, I don't think that's the point of what's going on here. Um and i i do you know we've we've gotten into recently talking about a lot of intentionality i don't think that was an intention at all uh i i think a lot of this really was.

[36:59] Plot plot plot you know let's let's have a little adventure right here on the base no new sets no new whatever we can just go you know they have one location shot that they had to go out and get or uh scene i mean and they're done so yeah i i feel bad giving it like no chevrons but i'm just not there i'm not there on this episode i can't disagree i think you know even even talking about the the crying and the and the stuff that i thought was such a great message not intentional i think that was put there just just to show that jack you know like remind us that jack was a dad and he and he's got these instincts and yeah and that's a good reminder for us you know from from a plot standpoint and i think even when i was talking about i'm like here a court 25 years later yeah really close to the day actually from when we're talking about it that i can i can see that seed that was planted and turned into this and grown in 1999 i probably would have watched that and literally just thought oh look look how cool jack is yeah actually you probably would have thought man i want to be like jack exactly or i was pretty that's a role model i was in my early 20s in 1999 i probably would have thought i want him as my dad.

[38:13] There you go although my dad was amazing and awesome but still jack would have been a great dad well jeff uh yeah i'm gonna leave this one at zero chevron's probably gonna catch some some flack from that out there on the youtubes and stuff but how about you you get to rate this one uh before we get to the rating to rank this one yeah before we get to the ranking though we missed a piece we're tracking a couple things right we are yeah absolutely uh we got two for crying out loud. One of them is not even a Jack one, but considering that the kid was imitating Jack, I'm going to count it.

[38:45] Totally counting it. Totally counting it. So we're going to add a couple of for crying out loud. We're not though. We've decided counting the indeed said the word indeed, but it wasn't the indeed that he, that he often says. So this is going to bring us up to, uh, 15 for crying out loud so far for Jack. Wow. Yeah. Which actually feels a little light to me um a little bit light we got five daniel deaths on screen wow yeah and we've, We've got one tilk indeed so far. So it's exciting stuff. There you go. There you go. Well, Jeff, talk to us about the ranking. Where do you put this on the 100% completely accurate definitive season two ranking of Stargate SG one?

[39:29] When, when I, during the episode I talked about, maybe it was during the episode or maybe it was in the, in the conversation here. Either way, at some point I talked about how Jack doesn't get a lot of meat in, in this, you know, in, in, in Stargate. A lot of times he's just the smart ass that kicks ass when they give him meat. It's incredible. And so when I'm looking at this ranking, like this, this is not a top 10 episode from what we've seen so far, but it's not like a bottom, you know, bottom five or anything like that. This is a, this is a middling episodes. Good. It was entertaining, kind of neat, but I'm really going to land on Jack. And what did, what did RDA, hey, what did Robert Dean Anderson get to do? And what did I like? And so when I look at this, there's message in a bottle, right? And that was him pinned up against the wall and kind of his focus point. And I really enjoyed that episode. I liked this one a little better. This is gonna be our new number 11.

[40:28] Wow. Okay. There you go. Number. I feel like that's probably a pretty decent spot for it. Yeah. Yeah. That seems about right. That seems about right. Cause below that, if I go down, there's, you got message in a bottle. There's matter of time, need family, Bane, gamekeeper prisoners, one false step. Yeah. That feels, that feels a inappropriate place.

[40:50] And I feel like looking at this list at this point, I feel like need is kind of the fold in the paper where everything above need it's at least a decent episode if not an amazing episode and the need isn't awful and then down below you're just like yeah i could do without any of those well maybe not any of them but i they're not great yeah there's only one that actually just makes me go blah and that's one false step in fact i'm going to do a thing here on our on our ranking list you're gonna do this yep you're gonna do this okay go for it there we go done i was a little surprised you didn't do this last last week yeah i just i literally just thought of it yeah that people don't know what we're talking about because you see it i see it we don't actually have the graphic up here jeff just took one false step from number 19 and went ahead and placed it at 22 and this in 19 20 and 21 are just empty right now which is weird because there's only two episodes left in the season we call this the ranking of the round table move is what that is there you go if you know you know oh my gosh you're gonna you're gonna blow up the comments man yeah i just threw a threw a b hand grenade into the whole thing all right well that is gonna do it for us this week then talking about show until next time jeff we're watching cool episode but you can't guess what this one's about title of the episode.

[42:17] 1969 just 1969 that's the title of the episode 1969 all numbers i know exactly what it's going to be about no you don't i do there's no way no way jack is going to get his first real six string he'll buy it at the five and dime it no well it's in canada right that's a canadian.

[42:41] He'll play it till his fingers bleed he'll yeah i it's either going to be that or it's going to be it's going to be voyager 11 59 right where like they go back and it's going to be an origin story of like well it can't be an origin story because it started but it'll be like, We're going to go back and relive this pivotal moment in the Stargate program kind of a thing. But I'm going to make my official guess that we're going to do the Brian Adams treatment for this one.

[43:12] Because why not? This is the show that would do that. All right. Well, you're a good guesser, Jeff. Sure. Hey, listen, we'll see you guys next time here on Stargate SG1.
