[0:12] Welcome to Stargate SG-1 for the first time, still not a Star Trek podcast. My name is Jeff Akin and I'm watching Stargate SG-1 for the first time. I'm Brent Allen and I'm watching Stargate SG-1 for the 47th time. But for the first time, I am looking for what Stargate is trying to teach us. Using that sci-fi thing that sci-fi shows do so well to hold up a mirror to society, to give us hope that things can be better in the future or just plain teach us how we can be better human beings to one another. Brent, this week we're watching the seventh episode of the third season of SG-1, Dead Man Switch. Last week I said that my guess is that SG-1 is going to be captured, held hostage, and there's a way out. They got to take Dude out, but he's got some sort of a dead man switch. If they take him out, things are going to fall apart. I'm excited to see how right or wrong I am. Why don't you give us some details on Dead Man Switch? Well, this is the seventh episode, season three, air date August 6th, 1999.

[1:15] This one, Jeff, is written by our good friend, Robert C. Cooper. I've often called him the Michael Piller of SG-1. And this is a Martin Wood joint. Nice. We need a little drop for him. Yeah, I feel like we need a sound drop for that one. We have a very cool guest star in this episode, Jeff. Okay. Now, I got to tell you, it doesn't really mean much to me because it was a little bit past my time. Like a hair past my time so i this is not something i grew up watching um but i know people who did and jeff i've got a feeling i've got a feeling this might be more up your alley than it is mine that's a lot of a lot of pressure no no we'll see because you'll you'll either just be like yeah okay whatever or like oh i know this guy so if you know him you'll you'll you'll immediately see him as soon as you see him so okay now with that jeff let's go watch an episode That's a good idea. Hey, listen, if you guys out there are joining us for the very first time, first of all, welcome. You're amazing. And this is how this works. You're watching the video out here on YouTube. Jeff and I are going to go watch this episode live together right now. Stick around right here on YouTube, and we're going to do like the reaction video thing. And right at the end, we're going to talk about Jeff's first watch experience. We'll talk about the messages that I found. If you want the full unedited version of this video, head over to our Patreon page at patreon.com slash.

[2:36] Bye nerds. And if you're listening to us on a podcasting app, you're about to gate into the future where you're going to hear our, for the first time or my, for the first time reaction, you're going to hear about the sci-fi messages that Brent pulls out of this thing. Brent, let's kick it off. Dead man switch. Closed Captioning by Kris Brandhagen.com i feel like we've been here before this looks like the nox planet we've seen no signs of gold civilization looks like every planet we've ever been to.

[3:13] It's like western Vancouver, maybe a little off Victoria Island. Yeah, somebody pointed out a long time ago, like, you can't say northwestern Canada because that would be like the Yukon. Yeah. I was like, no, no, you missed it. We're in America. So I said, it's the northwest in Canada. That's what I was saying. Just said it really close, really fast and close together. It's like it's been hit by a stack. It's the UAV. It doesn't make any sense. When a ghoul occupies a planet, they usually control the stargate. I mean, this state had no markings of anything. Oh! Ow, that hurt. That was really well done. Yeah, sure. Let's shoot this thing. Your weapons will not penetrate the shield. However, mine will.

[4:04] Who are you? Ares Bach. Perhaps you heard of me. Bach. Not I. Yep. I'm one of the galaxy's greatest hunters. He shot first, too. Not ringing a bell. Sorry. Well, I know you. The Gould voice isn't quite Gouldy. I wonder if it's just like an affect that he's trying to put on. You're a good guesser, Jeff. Well, I got that they're going to get captured. Here they are getting captured. Now drop your weapons or I'll kill someone. I don't think killing is your goal here. I think Jeff knows that. That actually feels like a guy that I have acting for me in a play right now. I'm sure you're thinking about escaping. So you should know that I've disabled the Stargate dialing device. This way.

[4:56] I like that they're just going to leave their weapons there. Yeah, safe spot. I like how Jack goes first. He crosses in front of everybody to go first. That's what the colonel does. You walk in first and you eat last. That's what leaders do. Sir, he's not Gawol. Oh yeah, she'd know. But Joel and I. So therefore. All we have to do is just flinch a little bit. And this will spray enough toxic gas to kill everybody in one breath. I love how he has an answer for everything. You know, just, oh, no matter what, I'm going to kill you. You're going to die somehow. This came out in 99, this episode? Can you get home right here now and help me? Major. It can't be him. What are you thinking?

[5:44] This, with this, and then this. He looks like Flash Gordon. But there's no way. Is it him? Yes, it is. It's Flash Gordon, Jeff. No way. No. Sam Jones. Yeah, it sure is. He has to be like 60-some-odd years old. He looks like he's 60-some-odd years old. So. Maybe not. I guess it came out in 81, I think? I wouldn't step any closer. Just showing my concern. Well, like I said before. Epic Queen song. After you was unintentional. The real reason I'm here is... Such an iconic face. Like, that really was a big part of my childhood. Ming the Merciless. That guy was so good. His name is Keltar. I do know that name. I haven't heard of him before. I have not heard of him either. Okay. Teal'c's response. Have you met every Goa'oob?

[6:31] I haven't the only thing i know is that so car has discovered i think that's like the jaffa f you dude so you wait he just no so car self-employed then he's the like ostracized system lord who's trying to take out the other ones like they kicked him out or something is he ostracized he might be ostracized basically he's satan he's the guy in hell right oh okay right oh that's right yeah yeah he was and apophis has to go through his thing right is the yeah yeah he was the guy with the face in the iris that was trying to come through like the irradiated face in the iris yep okay okay yeah i don't i don't know that you've that we've met so car face to face yet i don't think so he got mentioned in one of the episodes and it was just yeah yeah so when when apophis died and they sent his remember they sent his body through the gate uh they were sending him to Sokar. Oh, that's right. Okay.

[7:26] To appease him, right? Like, okay, here you go. You can have him. Yeah, because Sokar was after him. You know, and the guy was like, he knows what Sokar's going to do at this point. Here you go. Why do I recognize the name Keltar, though? Maybe because it sounds like Mork and Mindy or something. I don't know. Is it a shout out to something, Flash Gordon? I have no idea. I doubt. I don't know. I don't think so. Let's jump back in. Rogue Warrior. I give to the go-old what they want that they give back to me what i want in return how you keep from getting killed takes talent so uh what do you expect to get for us daniel just curious well uh teoka's worked the most the uh system lords would love to make a good example of him and carter here well she has the memories of the tokra jolinar and you o'neil you're considered well you're a pain in the mick, Neck? No.

[8:22] What about me? You? Probably happy to get a day's rations for you. Oh, a day's rations. Trade you. Poor Daniel. I'm just saying that if we know what we're worth, maybe there's something we can offer for our freedom. I went to college for a long time. Good. Back over there. Why do you need our help, anyway? Hey, I take help whenever I can get it. Sokar can figure out everything I can figure out. If I want to trade Keltar back to Sokar, I got to get to him first. I mean, guys, come on. What's the big deal? It's a Goa'uld. I hate Goa'uld. You hate him. Everybody hates Goa'uld. Come on. Let's do it. Come on. All right, Beetlejuice. Settle down. It's what he's doing, right? Come on. Come on. Good. You know, Jeff, if I didn't know better, I would swear that's Dolph Lundgren. Yeah. I really would. I'd be like Dolph Lundgren not doing something. Like, he was so, like, young and pure as Flash, you know what I mean? And, like, eesh.

[9:28] I hate to say it. He's Flash freaking Gordon, but he's a dime store Dolph Lundgren. Yeah. That's sad. He definitely looks like he'd be, like, a stand-in or something for Dolph Lundgren. Dolph Lundgren's stunt double. If you trust me, I trust you. Or maybe Dolph Lundgren is his stunt double. What's that? Right. For real. Grank. Catcher Cell White. I'm the greatest because I'm alive. That's it. Period. In fact, he's probably the worst. He's all talk at this point. He's all equipped with all kinds of fancy toys without risking my back. Telling his own story all the time. This is classic. little guy syndrome going on. Who else used to do that? Captain Jack Sparrow. What's that? Well, we're exactly one Zat gun short of actually having a Zat gun. He just happened to have one. What was the sound effect? I don't know. Why was the sound effect on it? He had the Velcro he had on his belt.

[10:34] So we'll fly to a closer planet with a Stargate. That's good thinking. Good thinking. Shoot him again. What do you think, Jack? Shoot him again? Yeah, all he's doing is delaying it at this point. Because he can wake up within just a couple of minutes, and he'll be right back. He'll wake up in the amount of time it takes for the plot to need him. Which apparently is about 15 seconds. Oh, he's not a cowboy. Yeah. Listen, in the meantime, tell me how to fly this thing. I feel like we just started a brand new episode of Quantum Leap. Oh, boy. Daniel, would you come here a moment? Looks like a countdown. Of course it is. Oh, Teal, would these ships have any kind of self-destruct mechanism? It is possible. Maybe it's just an original series Cylon. So, Teal, how does one override the self-destruct? Crystals. There should be three crystals. There's only two. The middle one's missing. Then there is no way to override the self-destruct. Oh. Aris must have the other crystal. Go. I love that he's trying to code. He's not just like, there's no way I can do it. He's like, oh, sorry. Only I can fire that. Put the weapon down. You put the crystal back.

[11:53] Have a nice day. Okay. Or what I would say. Thank you. Thank you. Put the gun down. Colonel, you think I'd give you a weapon that would work on me? Pickles? Pickles?

[12:17] Wow, you're right. It does nothing. I always wanted to shoot Daniel in a moment just to see. Does it work or is it just him? My people have always been strong and skilled. That's why the Go'uld kept the youngest as slaves, killed the rest. Well, you could have your freedom. That's him as a kid again. But my son still lives. He's a slave in one of Sokar's Naquita mines. One day I hope to capture a prize valuable enough to trade for his freedom as well as mine. Ah, so now we have the noble bad guy, Jeff. Yep. Talk about a sci-fi trope, right? I'm doing it to get my wife back, or to free my wife, or free my kid, or free whatever. That somehow justifies everything we're doing, right? Makes it all okay. These are cool. At the end of that riverbed is the cave where I last encountered Keltar. So Teok, how does one ghoul fire weapons from several directions? Tax. Tax? Tax unit tagamunitaron. What? Tax. I'm going to drop in the chat for you my spelling of that thing.

[13:38] Don't look at it. Right. And run. What's this thing do? It's like looking down the barrel of a gun, man. Surrender! Put your hand down!

[13:52] Please help me. I've heard a legend about this guy. I am not Goa'ul. I am Tok'ra. Ah! They got their people all over, Jeff. Yep. I wonder if Sokar... Because Sokar's going after him. I wonder if Sokar knows that. No. That's probably why Sokar... Well, remember, he's got to be a target valuable enough. A Tok'ra might be valuable enough. Watching your friends. How? Magic. Your son is being held as a slave. We can help you get him back. Would that be valuable enough for you? I wonder if he was calling him Keltar, thinking that if he went by Korra, Jolinar would recognize the name and it would all kind of come together for Sam. You want me to tell you what it really probably is? Sure. he's probably posing at like a lot of times tokra will pose as a ghoul okay to infiltrate and so his his undercover name was keltar but he's saying he's really cool okay of course question is is really tokra what now yeah can you talk does he know the handshake you prove you're a tokra i only have my word if samantha carter were here she would recognize me, i think you care and i don't think you like what you do nearly as much as you pretend to I think you should shut up. Oh, shaking a hand. Uh-oh.

[15:12] Water what you put in it whiskey, flavor prime hydration drink for this youtuber that I'm gonna be endorsed by it's a lie he has none never did catch or sell white catch or sell white Harris box race cannot live without the roshna keeps them subservient so whatever the reason he has no choice what's wrong I don't see them and they're not moving either the gold got them or they're not playing by the rules so what does that mean oh well there you go means i'm trading in on my cash major carter right here cut my losses and run it's a trap it's a trap i'd love it i was just like what are we strap let's do it let's go he's gonna have to show himself eventually yeah can you take him i can all right where is he, time to pay the piper totally that scene.

[16:29] Carter he's really good at being one step ahead all the time maybe he's not like as incompetent as I thought it was going to be. Come on. We can't let Aeris train. Hey, Jeff, it's your favorite dark Stargate right now. Right. They're really good at doing that. Oh, yeah. Lights? Who needs them? Way to play hard to get, boys. Well, I have what I wanted. The rest of you, free to go. Aw, you're so kind. I don't think so. Gave my word. If you take Korra, a lot of Tok'ra may die. I've already communicated to Sokar, and one of his mother ships will be entering orbit around this planet any time now. Oh, great. Not betray the lives of other Tok'ra.

[17:09] Okay what the hell would you do that for it's always on the tooth isn't it jeff right.

[17:19] Poison it's very ungold like because he's tokra right why would he do that to save the lives of other tokra such one does a goa old care about another goa old i've told you the tokra are not the same you having second thoughts here i have to give him something take me forget it i am the most valuable in trade next to the tokrah i don't care it was a little uh presumptuous we are choiceless, Lady Ladera would... Oh, this is so beautiful. ...disagreed. I'm starting to tear up here, you know? But we gotta go now. What happened? So he didn't die? Come on. That didn't make any sense to me. I thought he died. Oh, him? Yeah, he froze him. Like... It's a pretty noble thing you're doing. If he was gonna kill him, why would he stop him from doing the poison thing? I guess I never knew the Tok'ra were different, you know? Well, you don't really think the Tok'ra and the humans have a chance of overthrowing the Goa'uld, do you? I do. Indeed. I don't think so. I would rather sleep with those willing to die trying. I dig his scar. I love that resolve on Tilt. I really don't want to do this. I hate to go old as much as you do. He's got him. He's like, wait. I have an idea. Right? Want to see something cool?

[18:46] Oh, my God. I am here, O'Neil Yes You okay? I will be fine What happened? I had some technical difficulties I wish I had communicated to Sokar's ship Just after I accidentally removed this Oh, there you go, Glad to have you back, Teoka Somehow I must find a way to pay tribute To what you have done for me and the Tok'ra There is no need Oh, uh, Dr. Jackson Listen, I was lying to you before. The price on your head is much more than a day's ration. Actually, the Goa'uld want to see you dead as much as anyone for figuring out the Stargate. Thank you. It doesn't make me feel any better. It would make me feel better. Major? A little bit, a little bit. Who knows? Maybe someday someone will figure out a way for what's left of my people to be free the Goa'uld. And that would be something worth trading for. All right, Dr. Bashir. right, just yeah that's it just nod just give him a nod and walk away as tilk as you can get.

[19:53] Music.

[20:02] There you go and that's the episode.

[20:09] All right jeff we have just watched dead man switch Mitch, me for the 47th time, you for the first. I was looking for messages you were just enjoying or maybe not enjoying. I don't know. We're about to find out. Lay it on us. How'd you feel about this episode? Dead man switch. Dude, it had Flash Gordon in it. Flash Gordon. Ah, that's Queen's big. That's what almost resurrected Queen was that. I mean, it was Bohemian Wayne's world that actually resurrected them. But he had this big moment in the early 80s with Flash Gordon. I recognized dude in a second. I texted you because like you said, when we're heading in and a little before your time. But one of my favorite pictures of him, I sent it to you. Is that not? I mean, that's a face that gets burned into your head right there. He looks like the same, but like some hard living in between then and now. I just want to clarify, Jeff. There's like what? Two or three years between you and me? Those are key years, though. Those are key years. Right, right, right, right. Yeah. Right. But it's not like this is where a generation removed. Like I just, you know, just. I think it's important, though, to point out because Flash Gordon specifically was a huge deal. Yeah. For like four months. And then it was and then i think everyone realized oh my gosh that's kind of ridiculous.

[21:35] Yikes yikes but there was that moment whereas it was huge and you were too young during in that moment so so you missed it i enjoyed the episode brand it was all right i really so i eris bach took me on a journey in this one i say that a lot there's a journey that's the thing i think stargate is really good at is introducing you to a thing and then you go on a journey and sometimes you end up in the same place often you end up somewhere different and at first i thought this was going to be a story about an old bounty hunter who just isn't what they used to be and is living on their stories and telling everybody how great they were i thought he was going to be ineffective i thought that everything he said was going to be fabricated right so he comes out and he says i disabled the stargate you're stuck here and they just take him.

[22:25] I would go check. Oh, I could kill you with this. Oh, okay. I'm just going to take him at his word. He's very confident when he says the things, so it kind of makes sense that they're believing him a little bit. But I don't know. So I thought that was going to be the story. Turns out he might be like the missing link. There's something about him and his people where they reject the symbiote. They can't be implanted with a gould. my guess is it's the roshna the ketracel white that they are addicted to and he gave sam a little vial of it so so you know she can do her stuff and figure it out well not just not just the humans but think about the jaffa like what would it mean for teal can his people if they didn't have to carry around a larval form of the gold just to stay alive could be huge change everything yeah we we learned a new thing we learned about tax tax your work with the gons.

[23:23] Yeah yeah that was great so those are those are automatic remote weapons they can use so we have that in there but rather this episode um kind of fun to watch the whole i think there were, There was really one big point of this whole episode, and it was, hey, here's the Tok'ra. Remember these guys? They're going to be a big deal this season. They've been one. They're going to be bigger. Here they are.

[23:51] Also, we need to remind you and make it crystal clear, they are not Gould. They are Tok'ra, they are Gould, and they are not the same. Bok comes out with, you know, they've got bad blood, the same bad blood. And they're like, no, actually, no, they're quite different. That's what I think that the point of this episode, let's have a bounty hunter. Let's have a little fun kind of. And, um, and then just remind you that Tok'ra are going to be the culmination of this season somehow. My hope in this, like, I kind of hope we see Eris Bach again. I kind of like him. And they built a whole set, a new ship gave him a lot of like character stuff in there. It would make total sense for him to be an ongoing concern. And I think I'd be okay with that. The thing about Stargate, Jeff, is they can put a person in an episode. You could not see them for seasons, seasons, and then all of a sudden they're back. Or it could be several episodes, or it could be the next episode. How often have we seen Braytac jump in and out or Jacob or that Knox lady girl? You know, like she just randomly showed up at the end of one episode, you know? Yeah.

[25:00] So, yeah, there's certainly the possibility we could see somebody again, but – But also maybe not.

[25:07] Maybe not, but it also could be a while or not. So I think my advice to you is don't hold your breath. When and if it happens, that's when it will happen, but not before. That's fair. Especially for a show that's when it's incomplete.

[25:22] Yeah, right. Frankly, Brent, that's a good way to live your life, right? You know don't hold your breath if it happens it happens if it doesn't it's all good yeah all good yeah i feel like i might be short changing things on this but that's really my reaction on this there wasn't a lot that happened tokra bounty hunter uh a little more and the other reminder was socar so oh yeah we got we got to mention him before and we got we got him again so i think like we're at the point in the season nearing the midway point so it's like Like, I think we're heading to the end of this. It'll be Tok'ra, Sokar, this whole thing with the system lords. And so just here's your little reminder that there are these players and next week will probably go somewhere else. I will tell you, Jeff, Stargate doesn't typically work like that. Like, there's really not a big overall story that they have planned out that they're trying to tell. Yeah. As much as, hey, here's episode one. Here's episode two. Let's keep going. Hey, what's the next chapter? It's like they're kind of they're almost RPGing it. Like they're, they're the, the writers are just sort of as they go and they go, Hey, you know what? You remember this guy we had back here? It'd be a cool time to bring this person back in or like, let's bring this thread. And I think occasionally, and now this is, let me be, I never sat in that writer's room. I don't really know. I'm just telling you what I've heard and what I, what just seems right to me.

[26:44] But they, you know, I think they had some things like you just kind of mentioned, like we kind of want to do this during the course of the season. Yeah. But when and where that shows up and then obviously you have your your filler episodes, you know, I always say if if it's I watch seasons now and shows, especially these old ones that I've seen so many times. And I go, if I were to do the beam me up treatment and for those of you out there who don't know what beam me up is, that's an old podcast that I used to do with my buddy Matt, where we went through the entire franchise of Star Trek, but only doing the key episodes. Would this be an episode that I would put in or when I leave it out and this is very clearly to me one that I would leave out uh that doesn't necessarily mean that's a bad episode, I will tell you, this is one I tend to skip, but I actually enjoyed it a lot more on this watch than I thought I would. Yeah, I kind of went into this episode like, oh, it's this episode. I enjoyed it much more than I thought I would. You know, so that's good. Before I go any further, just want to update our tracking sheet. I didn't catch any for crying out loud.

[27:51] Indeed's Daniel deaths or again. And Jeff, I have I've decided what we're going to count for Samantha. Oh, OK. And we've got to go back and we've got to think about it. uh boyfriends we're counting her boyfriends her boyfriends her boyfriends we're gonna count her boyfriends um so she's had uh she had hansen we're back in the first commandment oh okay okay okay right right we're doing quote boyfriends yeah yeah yeah yeah people she's been in relationship with right okay uh do we want to count jack like her and jack kind of had that little thing during broke a divide okay not counting that one do not um let me be really like let me think about that for a second absolutely not let's see further alienating the community right there right right right uh you know we really should have a graphic we put up on this for the youtube folks and the and the patreon folks in the video oh yeah of all the yeah right right right uh let's see here brief candle no thor's hammer bloodlines i'm looking through here i'm looking through here.

[28:52] Um okay are we going to count jack from the mirror universe being that her mirror sam, no okay um i could go i could go either way with that uh let's hear prisoners okay what about martoof now martoof was joel and our boyfriend but but they had a little they kind of i'm gonna count it i'm counting that one oh oh the dude from the tolan remember the the yep kind of weird dude all right so that we're gonna count three um i think that's all we got so far yeah i can't think of any more yeah okay that's fine that's that's totally fair three three is where we're gonna drop our uh yeah we'll hit that our boyfriends uh that was that by the way is thank you to our patreon folk who made that as a suggestion um.

[29:38] Cool so i'm gonna i'm updating our tracking to you right here all right folks the audio people get this all called out all right all right jeff so we're talking about um messages we are you messaged me you sent me a little message we were you know during the episode as sometimes happens go figure guys and i think we were like five six minutes left in the episode and you're like this is going to be a short discussion afterwards and stuff and i was like yeah i said i'm not getting any messages out of this one this is just whatever and then the end of the episode happened right so let's talk about it right let's talk about it this is one of those messages i've seen in several sci-fi shows and i love it because it is such a core message really speaks to that how do we treat each other better as human beings also holding up a mirror to society right exactly um but here's the thing. Eris Bach grouped all gold, all gold in together. You're gold, you're bad. There was no individuality. There was no individual choices. There was no whatever, just nope. If you're that, it doesn't matter what your name is, who you are, the choice. He strips you of your identity and everything that makes you a person and just says, if you're that, then you're bad.

[30:53] Right um in the real world we do that all the time if you're of this political party you're bad or you're good if you're of this country you're bad or you're good if you're of this lineage you're bad or you're good uh if you're uh if your favorite football team is this team then you're awesome otherwise you're awful if your favorite color is blue then you're like the most amazing person in the world because that's a great color um take your pick then matt you're blonde you're Brunette, you're male, you're female, you're gay, you're hetero, you're trans, you're cis, you're whatever. Whatever. Right. Like whatever. None of those define who a person is. What defines who a person is, how they live their life, the choices they make. Right. Those are the quality. What are the qualities we judge people on? Like we should or that we actually do. No, we should. Very different. What are the ones we should? The content of your character. Exactly. Yeah. How do you how do you treat the people around you? Exactly. Exactly.

[31:55] When you take away anything else, you lump them in together and it makes it easy to hate those people. And then it makes it easier to destroy them it makes it easier to fight them right um but when you when you stop to get to know the one it gets hard i think of the great star trek episode i borg where they captured one of the borg they got to know it and it became a him and suddenly they couldn't do the thing with it that they were going to do with it which was turn them into a bomb and send them back because it would be not right it may be good for business to not care eris's box the whole business was he's going to go trade these people in. Didn't matter. Innocent or guilty didn't matter. He didn't care. He just had to go trade them in. That was the job. Right.

[32:39] But you know what? Here's the thing. It's not good for your soul when you live life like that of not caring. We saw Eris Bach. He was seemingly fine, right? He was comfortable. He was cocky. He had a good living. He was the greatest out there. Why was he the greatest out there? Because he was alive because he was doing what he had to do. Still living. But you know what? There were times that we saw, he was just as much a slave, a servant to the Gua'uld as any of the Jaffa or any other host being used by the Gua'uld. He was still in subservience to them, and he hated it. And he said so as much. He's like, look, I don't want to do this. I hate them as much as you do, right? He gets to know the Tok'ra, right? He stops. He's like, why would you do that? That's a choice you made. You were going to sacrifice yourself. That's not Gua'uld. That's, that's not, oh, we're going to get this Jaffa here. We got tilk. What's he do when he has tilk and he's flying away. So why did you do what you do? What's going on? He listened. He got to know the one all of a sudden. What's he do? Jeff. Practically abandons his whole plan, his whole lifestyle. He's going to go on the run. He's now going to have to fight and trade for this Roshna stuff until he can get a cure for it. Again, it's really that piece. Don't judge people. This is the sci-fi message, right? Don't judge people by simply what they are. Judge them by who they are.

[34:01] Did Robert C. Cooper sit down to write this sort of an episode and say, this is a message that i'm trying to deliver through the episode i don't know i'm not in his head i haven't asked him but he could because everything in the episode pointed to that last five minutes yeah we can go back all the way through through the very first moment we met eris bach and track it all the way there and it all built it all led to this one moment where he could have this conversation and have this realization to say i can get to know and you know what he wound up having a change of heart and he became a better when he left sam after giving him after giving her that little vial she must get a little smile on his face you're right yeah he felt good about like hey i'm doing this thing yeah like like because that's how we judge people that's how we go forward um and if you just if you just treat them like meat sacks and, who they are doesn't matter it's just you're this and so this is how i'm gonna judge you or treat you it's bad for the soul man it's bad it is so it comes down to me to rate this to say how many We do a scale of zero to seven chevrons as far as how strong the message is. A lot of times we throw intent, Jeff, I'm going to abandon the intent.

[35:13] Yeah, I think this message was pretty strong, even though they didn't really discuss it till the very end. They discussed it and they you didn't need them to discuss it a ton because they had set it up throughout the course of the episode. It also wasn't a day who sex mock on a type of a message where it just came out of nowhere. They really had been setting it up. So to me, out of seven, I'm going to give this one a five Chevron rating because a pretty good message, pretty strong message. So I like it. five chevrons i like that yeah i feel like the whole episode built to that moment when he and tilk were in the ship and he looks over to you know like they look at each other and like oh we're gonna do some stuff like let's go and it is yeah you're right i think we went back and watched it which i don't know if i'm gonna go back and watch this one but if we did i think all of those pieces lead to that moment yeah absolutely and he has any he blows up his ship they go flying out of the escape pods and away he goes so um i do like it this is one of those episodes, Jeff, I got to tell you, after going through this process with you, my opinion of this episode has raised and elevated this episode. Wow. It has by a lot because like this is an episode I was like, eh.

[36:23] Eh, actually there's a lot to this episode. I'm kind of excited to go back through it again and watch for that in a way that I've never looked at it before. That's why I love doing this for the first time. I've never done this show like this, uh, through this lens. Now, Jeff, that's just what it did to me. It raised, it raised it in the ranking for me. However, you, my friend, you're the one who is doing the official Stargate SG one for the first time ranking of season three. So you're the one you're, you're the person whose job it is to place this one into our ranking. Our current ranking as it stands is number one, fair game. Number two, learning curve. Number three, end of the fire. Number four, legacy. Number five, point of view.

[37:05] Jeff, how do you rank this one? Before I rank it, I just need to point out to everyone that this ranking is definitive. I am the authority on SG1. And if you don't agree, you can comment below. There you go. There you go. So again, I've said this every time I get to ranking. And it's been a great season, good episodes, blah, blah, blah. Brett, this is going to be our new number five right above point of view.

[37:29] And, and, and really very much based on the last five to eight minutes of the episode. Yeah. I, I, I like that. I think that's probably a great place for, for where that goes in the overall message. You know, there was an episode of Babylon five. It was awful. It was awful. It was horrible until the last, like, you know, five, six, seven, eight minutes. And then it turns on a dime and a fantastic ending to the show. Which one was that?

[37:56] Infection. There's a reason I forgot that one. No. But you're right. It was the halfway point. It was the halfway point of that one. It was minute 28. At minute 28, something happened where that episode was awful until that moment. Oh, yeah. It was so bad. But once you hit that 28 mark, man, that episode took off. This one just had to wait until like the 38-minute mark. But it got there. It totally got there. Got there. All right, Jeff. Well, with that, that is going to do it for us right here this time on Stargate SG1 for the first time watching Dead Man Switch. Would you like to know what we're doing next time? I would like to know. Yes. All right. Well, next time, Jeff, buckle your seatbelt. We were watching an episode called Demons. I venture a guess as to what demons could possibly be about. I got it. So when we were in watching the episode, uh, I was trying to remember, did I remember the name Keltar? No, no, I never heard that. It was so car. So cars, the one I'd heard before. And we talked about how so car is like the devil.

[38:59] Of stuff so this is going to be a socar episode the demons are going to be like his minions or whatever so they're going to start building up a little more we had a pothis you know for the first two seasons and this is going to be like one of the big first things that brings socar up to be like the big bad for season three all right well jeff you are a good guesser my oh yeah really really great we'll find out just how accurate you are next time right here on stargate sg1 for the first time hey thank you guys out there so much for joining us you're amazing you're awesome we love you guys listen please while you're here please be sure to like the video subscribe to the channel if you like what we got going on here at by nerds babylon 5 we've got sg1 who knows what else we're gonna have by the time all this stuff goes out jeff so much stuff happening and make sure you guys join us over on patreon you can get our discord you get access to all that sort of stuff uh patreon.com slash bye nerds and uh hey listen wherever you are out there please let someone know about this show the best way you can help us grow is by getting the word out so let somebody know who is needs to fall in love with the series for the first time or somebody who like me already loves the series and they just want to relive it for the first time so thank you guys so much we're gonna get out of here jeff for you for me i'll say see you later guys hey Hey Brent.

That's one of them, yeah, and Babbel and a bunch of others. I made my own. I just made one. Oh, did you? I'm really excited about it. I haven't named it yet. Something Gould, something, something. But it's an app where literally you can learn how to speak Gould in four seconds. Really? Cree! Cree! Cree Jafar! That's it. That's the lesson. Indeed. We'll be right back.

[42:27] Music.

[42:36] I mean look at what happened with cassie look at what happened with that reto kid, you know um i know a few other kid things that come up hey spoiler alert there's going to be at least a handful more over the next eight seasons that we still go through you know, Jack's definitely got a soft spot for kids. No, no, whether that's a result of what happened with his son or that's who he is as a person and partly why his son affected him so much. Like obviously there's a son, but still bigger than that. Like Jack's a, it's just a good dude, man.

[43:09] Yeah. I got to think that he was a great dad, right? Like he was a really good dad and losing his son.

[43:16] Especially the way he lost his son was obviously in the, in the, film you know that was that changed him and darkened him quite a bit but as he's you know as time does its thing and he's doing his stuff he's like i feel like he he decided that he's a good dad or you know a good thing not only is he was but now he also believes that he is i don't know that he didn't before but like it shows he's like yeah this is a thing i can do i got this it's really cool seeing him operate like that uh also we came to know that there is such a thing as a knack with a reactor or knack with a generator kind of a big deal that's a thing uh jeff what was your prediction for this episode a piece of new tech that they're gonna have to figure out and that was that was sam's whole storylines figuring out this new tech oh there you go jeff i like it buddy you get high level enough you're gonna hit something right i like it buddy i like it i like it uh just to update we had no additions to our for crying out louds and deeds or daniel deaths counseling countings that we are doing although there's a perfect opportunity for an indeed oh my gosh there's so many so many um so jeff i guess with that um we're gonna call this a great episode television good 45 minutes could have worked anywhere uh good stuff i'm glad that this was in stargate not star trek i agree because it would have been different in star trek and i wouldn't i don't think i would have appreciated it as much so.

[44:44] With that, Jeff, it's time to move on to our next episode. Would you like to know we're watching next time here on Stargate SG-1 for the first time? Yeah, I suppose so. We are watching an episode titled Point of View. Point of View. Point of View. Get high level, Jeff. Give us a point of view on Point of View. This is going to be an episode from the System Lord's perspective. We're going to see things happening from a different point of view. And the cool thing in that like i'm i'll be excited for is just getting that view into the system lord gould culture that we'll get a little bit of but um there'll be sg1 over here on the side doing a thing that'll intersect enough to make it the episode so this is a episode we'll see this from the system lord point of view all right well you're a good guesser jeff sure you're a good guesser well that's going to do it for us right here on stargate sg1 for the first time that's going to do it for us here with learning curve. Thank you guys out there so much for joining us. Hey, listen, don't forget wherever you are catching this show, whether you're on audible, Apple podcast, Spotify, YouTube.
