[0:36] Welcome to Stargate SG-1 for the first time, still not a Star Trek podcast. My name is Jeff Akin, and I'm watching Stargate SG-1 for the first time. And I'm Brent Allen, and I'm watching Stargate SG-1 for the 47th time. But for the first time, I am looking for what Stargate is trying to teach us. I'm watching the show, searching for those sci-fi messages. You know, those things that hold up a mirror to society, give us hope that things can be better in the future, or just tell us how to be plain better human beings to one another. We're going to find out if that happens in the 14th episode of the third season of SG-1. We're watching Foothold. And last week, I was asked to predict this one. And my prediction is that some aliens are going to come busting through the Stargate while SG-1 is off on some other planet. Maybe they're attacking Earth. Maybe they're just super aggressive, whatever. But they're going to attack. They're going to gain a foothold in the SG-C. And when the SG one team comes back, we're going to have us some pew, pew, pew going on.

[1:38] Do you have any cool facts about this one other than the pew, pew, pew? You're a good guesser. Cool facts. Not really. It was November 5th, 1999 when this episode first aired. So right after last week, you know, no big break or anything coming out of the two parter. But there is a fun note that is sort of side. It's related to this episode. the director of this episode a guy named andy makita now this is a name i'm not bringing up all the directors i'm just bringing up the guys that like are major in the star trek start oh my gosh in the star gate uh world you know robert c cooper peter de louise uh martin wood andy Makita is one of these guys. He is going to go on to direct 64 episodes across the entire franchise. 21 of them are going to be right here in SG one. This is his first SG one episode. However, Jeff.

[2:34] He's actually been around since Children of the Gods. Okay. He was first assistant director on half of season one, every episode of season two, and pretty much every episode of season three to this point. And they finally were like, hey, you first AD, why don't you direct an episode now? So he directs an episode. Again, it worked out pretty well for him because he goes on to be a very consistent director. He also is a producer comes on as a producer eventually he's a production manager he's the second unit director of all three franchises for a lot of the episodes so the guy is just.

[3:16] Like when you talk about people who make stargate this is a dude making stargate and this is his first episode where he's he's directing and he really gets to to helm an episode so um that's cool i one thing i love about these longer running sci-fi series especially is how like they develop their own talent you know actors get chances to direct some of them go on and have incredible directing careers or they you know the crew kind of grows up from inside and there's been quite a bit of that in sg1 like yeah this uh this guy and then there was someone else who said like yeah he ends up being one of the producers of it was who's at atlantis and universe he ends up becoming the robert c cooper yeah he becomes one of the creators the michael pill i i robert c cooper to me is the michael pillar of stargate you know he comes in as a writer becomes a head writer and then actually creates subsequent shows as he goes on you know yeah that's cool, this guy doesn't he's not a creator of the shows but he's i mean his office is right next door like he's he's hanging out with us doing this with us as well so um i will also tell you jeff and this is just a little preamble to the whole thing i'm really excited for this episode really you You know how I often talk about if we were to give Stargate the beam me up treatment, which is the, you know, where do you go through and you kind of say that's an episode we're doing. That's an episode. That's a that's an episode. And we're going to leave these ones out.

[4:42] This is an episode that at least as far as the message goes. I don't know that this one has a big message in it. Okay. But it is. You eat those words. But it's one that I just have a gut feeling watching it with this particular lens. I'm going to come out with something I've never seen before. Awesome. That'd be fun. So I'm kind of excited to really jump into this episode because I don't know what it is. Like I'm thinking for it. I'm going, I have no idea. This is not the Knox where I can go. I can tell you exactly what that message is. This is not. You know, a couple other episodes I can't mention yet, but, uh, this one, I just, I have a feeling it could be, and I might be wrong. I don't, we might get to the end and I'll be like, yeah, no, I don't have anything.

[5:34] Here's all that buildup and nothing. I'm just saying it could be there. Now that has nothing to do with the quality of the episode, Jeff, I'll let you decide that for yourself. But speaking of quality of the episode, why don't we go ahead and jump into this one? Foothold. What do you say? Let's do it. All right. Well, listen, if you are joining us for the first time here at Stargate SG one for the first time, first of all, welcome. You're amazing. You're awesome. And we're so glad that you have chosen to join us here. The way this works is Jeff and I have not already watched this episode and we've come in prepared with notes to talk about it. We're going to watch the episode right now. If you're hanging out with us on YouTube, stick around because you're going to get our reaction, cut up reaction. If you want the full unedited version, head over to our Patreon page at patreon.com slash Bye nerds.

[6:21] And if you're listening on a podcasting app, one of our incredible audio listeners, you're about to gate into the future. We'll be there waiting for you. I'm going to share my, for the first time reactions. Brent's going to share that message. If he, uh, if he finds it, it's a big, if we're either going to have a nice Chevron conversation or none whatsoever, but we'll find out. Right after we watch this episode. Brent, let's do it. Let's watch Foothold. Open the gate. What? Oh, my God.

[7:09] Is that dude carrying a purse? Ammon's ready to go He's ready to fight somebody You see that bitch Look at his face He's gonna punch someone Heading into the octagon, lots of rain hail did i mention the rain sir report to the infirmary i think we'd all like to change first general i personally have mushrooms growing up all levels stand by for contaminated materials transfer infirmary yes sir, it's like jack feels like he's on stage performing he's like i'm doing my bit Anybody? Anybody? He died in a thousand. I've been there before. Hello, is this thing on?

[8:35] Infirmary? What? Oh, I'm just escorting you up as a safety precaution, sir. There's a big chemical spill on level 23. What kind of chemical? Tetrachlorethylene rupture. Rupture? The entire level's been sealed off. Hazmat team's cleaning it up now. What? There's no danger, sir. Thank you. Probably there was a lot of thunder where they were from, I think. Listen to your mouth, please, Colonel. Yeah! How's a needle in my butt and put water out of my ears? It isn't. Come on, sir. You know this is standard procedure. We should rethink this procedure.

[9:23] You ever had a shot in the patoot? In our galactic meanderings, if we happen to stumble across this Narcissus child. Narcissus! We're talking about a baby, right? What? What? Attention all levels. Contaminated material transfer in progress. Please remain in your post so feel notified. Where's Dr. Frazier? Who are you? Really jam it in this time, okay? I don't understand why it's got to go in a muscle. That's the biggest muscle. Put it near my thigh. Right? Right? Colonel? Daniel? Just relax. Just relax.

[10:17] Let's begin. They're not in the SGC. They ended up going somewhere else their stream got intercepted, you think so? I do, but then why okay so we had the training grounds right where they were training, the Jaffa to look like they were from Earth and you know they were SG-10 or SG-11 Yep. And so I wonder if there's like other training grounds or whatever. Maybe they have an SGC, you know, and they've developed grown clones or something of everybody. I was going to say, they've got to get these people down. They've got to get mannerisms and speech patterns and all that sort of stuff down. So maybe this is like they don't have like a holodeck but they have like we'll create some people and try maybe so they're gonna try and get the actual the actual sg1 team there so they get like hands-on stuff maybe right i do like how the whole episode starts with a shot to the butt.

[11:41] Music.

[11:57] It must have something to do with the alien symbiote within him. It took an extremely large dose just to sedate him in the first place. What is the problem with the human? Her body chemistry has been altered. It is related to her prior infestation by the dominant parasitical species of this galaxy. Is there a way to compensate? I have not found it yet. Place the men a holding cell. Once the invasion is complete, you may study them further. Only then will we know if this is a viable new home world. Come with me. Take that first. It's not... It's not that. It's not a training ground thing. This is... An invasion of Earth? Please remain in your post until they're fine. The contaminated material transfer in progress. Are they the contaminated materials? 23. No, this one's going to 16. I like that they got an elevator guy, though. He's really good at pushing those buttons. What do you do, Sergeant? I push this button right here, sir.

[13:25] Jokes like, if I bust him on my forehead, he will get knocked out. Dude, if you're going to headbutt somebody, have a metallic emblem in your head that you can aim for. Let me write that down. Keep that in mind. I think he literally put him into a closet. I always feel so cheated when I see Teal'c suiting up that he doesn't, like, grab, like, some eye black and... Put on the headband. Yeah, yeah, yeah. This is the problem, though, with, like, attacking them on their home turf. Like, Token knows what closet to put them in, where the armory is. They've got everything figured out. But you can't invade them on your home turf. Like, you've got to go to theirs. I think he's going to leave them in the elevator. It's like somebody's going to see that soon. They're going to know you're having an issue. Oh, wait, we're going to go with. Okay.

[14:47] Special delivery those little moving table beds that they got them rolling around on are not major carter why there's little time i know or had it standing well.

[15:08] If you're gonna spew spew onto that guy over there what the hell happened to them they are not what they appear to be, there's been an alien incursion within the S.G.C. what? In the infirmary I witnessed Dr. Frazier and General Hammond, speaking of a procedure which had failed to work upon both of us. They spoke of invasion. How does that add up to aliens? I saw two of them in their natural form. Truly, they are alien. What about the colonel and Daniel? We have to know what's happened to them. Come in. Lock. It's not locked. Ch-ch-ch-ch-ch-ch-ch-ch-ch. Power. That. That. I do like that they can come in and do stuff like that and not just kill people. Yeah. One shot of the zat. That's cool. Just knocks them out. They're good. They're good.

[16:26] Punching up the gate. Look at all those little CRT monitors in there. So much radiation. Remember when that was the thing? Nanu Nanu. I am Darth Vader from the planet Vulcan. Impostors?

[16:54] Music.

[17:11] Oh, look, we found a Jeffrey's tube. Oh, you can't leave them in the elevator. Like, now they know something's up.

[17:24] Music.

[17:30] The base was designed to keep people out, not in. If we can make it to the south gate. Oh, there goes that idea. He shoved the one guy in a closet and left the other people in the elevator. I have to go kill these people. Where's all the stuff he just got out of the... Like, Tilk should be... Rambo'd up. Loaded up, yeah. Like Captain Janeway hunting down big-ass insects. I love the Foley work on that. There wasn't a big squawk, squawk. Yeah. That was super realistic. Yep.

[18:26] Oh, two shots. Self means business now. Yeah. The joke's bleeding. I've never noticed that one. No one makes me bleed my own blood. Ha, ha, ha, ha.

[18:50] Dude, so she got in that at most on level 16. Oh, yeah. And she climbed up. I don't know where she had places to stop along the way Dang Probably not a lot of them That by the way does not look super secure Just like, Can anyone just get in that way? Like the Sith guard, uh oh, ah that didn't take much, which is pretty realistic i think shows always wait for it to fill up with smoke yeah yeah yeah.

[19:58] Oh, this guy. We have a foothold situation. Major Carter, where are you? I can't tell you that, sir. If memory serves, there's an outdoor cafe outside NID headquarters. In D.C.? Four o'clock. Uh, I'm going to need a little more than that. I repeat, we have a foothold situation. Major, you're way outside your appropriate chain of command. I have reason to believe that may be compromised, sir. That should be a red flag for you. She's calling you. Right?

[20:40] Also, I like that she just has his number memorized. Yeah, because this isn't a... Call Mayborn. I don't think she grabbed the Rolodex as she headed out the place. So for you young folks, a Rolodex is a little filing system that had little cards in it that used to keep people's phone numbers on. Kind of rolled. Like wheels. Kind of rolled. Hey, Tealuk, how are you feeling? Because we used to use phones to communicate to people. You went a little crazy on us, so we had to sedate you. Spoken words, not written words. What happened? I did not. SG-1 was exposed to chemical fumes from the spill. He became delusional and attacked several people trying to escape from the base. Teal, glad you're awake. Has Dr. Frazier explained the situation? Parents went away on a week's vacation. We're hoping you can tell us where Major Carter is. She also had an adverse reaction to the chemical. One of the side effects is hallucinations. paranoia. Your symbiote protects you from a lot of things, Teal, but apparently not tetrachlorethylene.

[21:57] Where is she? They've mentioned the chemical a couple of times. They've mentioned it a couple of times. I think that's going to be one of the things that screws it up for them. I don't know how that works or something. Go. So here's a question. Is everything we've seen so far a hallucination from Teal'c and Sam Carter? Or are they messing with Teal'c now? I think they're messing with him. I was just going to say no because we just saw Sam go up. But you said Teal'c and Sam. I don't think they're... Well, it causes hallucinations, they say. Okay. I don't think that's the case. I think they're just in the line they're feeding them. Okay. Okay. I do not know. I do. But I can't tell. That would be wild, though, if that turned... Basically, Tilke into the bad guy.

[22:51] Music.

[23:09] I don't remember being there being so many outdoor cafes in dc like it seems like everything they do in dc happens outside probably because they can't actually get licensed to do anything inside any of these buildings that's fair those are awful chairs to sit in by the way, so you came to the one person you don't trust i don't know how far up the chain of command the infiltration goes it may well be contained within the sgc but if general hammond was compromised he sounded fine to me on the phone what he called me major calmed down was concerned for you that's all i told you we had a foothold situation major a chemical spill causing paranoid delusion is infinitely more plausible to me than aliens taking over the SGC. God. You don't think I can tell the difference between the two? You planted a good seed right here. It's like, hmm.

[24:12] Mayborns, you are an idiot every day of the week. Why couldn't you have just taken one day off? That's insubordination, Major. No, it's not. That's insulting. Oh, for crying out loud. Marking it down.

[24:40] They're wearing sunglasses. That's the giveaway. All right. Are they? Exactly what are the side effects of this tetrachloroethylmormeline stuff? Well, they got him down pretty okay. Hallucination, delusion. Paranoid delusion, I think it was, but go on. Look, I know what I saw. There goes my theory. We were affected by the fumes the moment we got in the elevator. Didn't even realize it was happening. I vaguely remember having some water in my ear. That's it. Dr. Frazier injected me with something. She was trying to sedate you. She didn't give enough to Teal. He sprung you and off you went. He's fine, by the way. Beat the crap out of a couple of SFs, but he's fine. We're telling you the truth, Sam.

[25:41] Here's how I know that's not the case. They took the time in that scene with no tilk, no Sam for dude to look at guy and pull down his thing and see the little like thing on his chest, making sure they were still okay. So they weren't in the scene. That makes it real. We'll see. Wait, that makes what real? I'm sorry. It makes the, they're not just hallucinating. Like these are actual alien. Like there is an actual alien invasion happening. Oh. You're observant. I fully intend to return with you just to make sure everything's all right. And you agreed to that? Shouldn't I tell you something? I wouldn't tell them where we were meeting until they agreed to my inspection of the SGC. I have no idea what you're walking into. I can take care of myself, Major. If I don't report back in a few hours, you can rest assured that action will be taken. We just want you to come back so Frazier can check you out.

[26:49] Jack does have some cool sunglasses. No! Mayborn? Major Carter, you will accompany us back to the base. If you resist, you will be handcuffed. No, she won't. This is all very touching, but I think this very conversation in this very public place is evidence that Major Carter, in her current state, is something of a security risk. What's the matter with you? No. It's starting to wear off, isn't it? You're starting to think straight. That's exactly what happened to me. I'm so tired. We're going to go now. I'd like you to come with. But it's up to you. Well said. Alright. Sure? Good. Dude, she said yes. Go. Planes waiting.

[27:53] It just occurred to me, the gates in Colorado, they're indecent. She got pretty far away. Yeah. Just having what was honor and climbing up 16 plus floors. Those government credit cards, man. Seriously. Please release me from these restraints. I'm sorry, Tilk. there's still a chance you could relapse three of the men you attacked have concussions good indeed, that's what happens yes when I headbutt you with my you're certain she's been okay very well yeah and that pause that's all I'm watching now for now we may begin experimenting immediately, but also maybe now he's hallucinating again.

[28:50] I got a fancy that's a really big nice private jet The feeling we're looking like Air Force three, maybe cozy little jet you got here, weren't you have alerted General Hammond to expect me? Oh, yes He's awaiting your thoughts, So how exactly is Teal'c? Oh, well, you know Teal'c. Is the chemical spill completely cleaned up? As of this morning, the hazmat team had gotten the last of it. But they're still going to keep level 23 sealed off until they can figure out what happened in the first place.

[29:30] Carter, what are you doing? Don't move. Put the gun down. She's hallucinating again. Shoot you in the leg. Oh, whoa! Oh, there it is. There it is. Oh, no. What the hell is that? I don't know what's happening. Oh, is it Pilate? Do you know this guy? Have you ever met that guy? No. Sit down.

[30:18] Music.

[30:23] Look out! You know, I just thought shooting on a plane. Okay, so you don't know that guy? You've never met him? No. Okay. That's major davis you first we'll get more familiar with him as time goes on.

[30:47] Music.

[30:59] I don't know. What does that prove? Go. You're not a changeling? I know, right? Does it change into something? What about Daniel? He doesn't have to do the little test that doesn't prove anything? Oh, my God. General. Someone take this Halloween crown off of my head. This always reminds me of He-Man for some reason. I don't know why, it just does. It's the way that crown is set up. It's totally like an evil in kind of thing. Yeah. What is that? It's about to cocoon. I don't know. And... What is that damn thing? I already told you I didn't know the check was on. Tell us how that thing works.

[32:20] Music. Hold on a second. Open his shirt. Shoot him in the head.

[32:28] I see him.

[32:46] Music.

[32:54] So this is how they look like us. where's the real daniel is he still alive you can talk to us now or you can talk to my colleagues later either way we'll find out the information we need, is she gonna look like daniel if she puts it on that's awesome that's awesome sit down Wow.

[33:31] Music.

[33:53] It only creates an image. I couldn't hear Daniel's thoughts or anything. That must be what this one does. Put that thing down, Major. What caused their images to blink out? They were just sitting there. Now put it down. Why don't you open your chest there, Brocephus? Come on. We were leveling off cabin pressure. This is electronic. It was more like interference. It's... Noise from the engines, maybe. If we can replicate the condition, sir, we can find it. All right. I can't tell if you're an alien or just a jerk. Oh my God.

[34:46] It feels like if you do something here, Jack, it could hurt a lot. You're pretty high off the ground. Even the little armor holder thing is very He-Man. Who's that? Major Davis. Colonel O'Neill. What's going on? How did we get like this? You're asking me. I'm glad to see that jack just can't like suddenly turn into a gymnast aerial silk guy and like flip his body around and like do something weird like Oh.

[35:30] Music. So we're plugging them into the Matrix. Yeah, it was basically that with a lot less goop. Let's go.

[35:40] My God.

[36:00] Music.

[36:00] Let's go.

[36:16] Hook him up. Stirring macaroni for the sound effect there. Oh my gosh. Oh, did you see him? Did you see him? No. Might have seen some movement. Uh-oh. Let's learn about this symbiote. Oh, they're just yanking him out. You need to be really careful with the blocking on this scene. I thought the sedative might be interfering. The symbiote is quite resilient. So is he. That symbiote should look a little bit different than the last time you saw it. on our way back. It looks bigger. It's growing. Yeah. It's been a few years. like it should. Okay.

[37:45] Find the button. Find the button. Ow. And you broke your ankle. The latch for that thing is... You found it. Sir, if there's another phrase, or my guess is there's another you and me walking around, too. Not walking around so much anymore. Maybe, uh, maybe malfunction. What are you doing and wake her up? Now they unhook her, can she still, like, need the connection?

[38:29] Music.

[39:06] Does it count as punching a woman if that woman's an alien disguised as a woman? I don't think so. I try to be fairly progressive, Jeff, but still, dudes hitting women just as a no-go for me. We're all equals. We don't do that. Take a hit, right? Well, sure. If you want to throw down, let's throw down.

[39:44] Yeah, again, to your point of security, just threw that lid open. Yeah. There's no lock. No lock. Magnetized. It's literally a garbage can lid. Yeah. It's hidden in the woods, not guarded. Hello. What about the other thing? The other thing. It's like, yeah. I'm okay. I'm okay hitting a woman, but I'm not. Just an alien. Good for him, though, for acknowledging, like, I'm not cool with this, but this is an alien. Right. And she has an undershirt on.

[40:39] Which is somewhat remarkable considering this is showtime. Yeah. It's an alien, all right? You know. You should find something to tie it up. Leave it in the elevator.

[41:00] Hello? Colonel? Yes. It's you. Yes. It's good to see you. Oh, my God. I'm pretty sure it's you because I shot you. Oh, hey. Who are you? Oh, I'm Sam. Oh, sorry. Major Carter?

[41:41] Are you sure it's her? Sam. Yeah. Every one of the people in this room has been duplicated by the aliens, sir. I noticed that. The procedure didn't work on me or Teal'c. We escaped, but Teal'c's been captured. Where's he? I don't know. I had time to find him, sir. Look, Colonel Mayborn's forces are moving in soon. Mayborn? How'd he get him? I called him. Willingly? Colonel, in 29 minutes, those forces are going to break down the front door and shoot anything that resists. We need to get our people disconnected. Yeah, I pulled that headband thing off of Frasier. Her evil twin came running. Well, how did you two get free? We just woke up. Yeah, I kind of shot you, so... Must have happened when I killed you. I'm sorry. I killed the aliens impersonating both of you on the plane. And they don't know you did this. I don't know, sir. I have had enough of his mother effing aliens on this mother effing plane go.

[42:49] Sir we're gonna need more weapons it's amazing what you can do with sound waves, I think they're entire like mutants in the X-Men yeah thing that like gonna push out sound waves and do cool stuff with it The whole thing. Ouch. It'd be cool if they go in there and see that Mayburn's hanging up there, too. Oh, no. Trying to replicate the sound.

[43:41] Music. you will come with me i will submit to no further experiments oh but you will, Really? Indeed. Come on, give me one. Can't allow that, sir. Oh, but you can't. I like how the other guy just stands there and looks at him. Yeah, what did you just do? Colonel O'Neill, I presume. Gave it away. Now we just need the real daniel and we got the team back together let's go, that's it, i like how michael shanks is still getting a lot of work in this episode like daniel's not going to be in this you are yeah oh do i gotta put on the old guy makeup again nope just a shirt.

[43:42] Sir i've come for the ball prisoner,

[45:11] Oh that one looks different, and now we can't understand the language, get it over the PA system you know I find it interesting they went with noise issue instead of like, because they said they're all electronic, right? Launch an EMP. Yeah, but that takes everything out. Shut the Cheyenne mountain down. As always, you're an animal. I like Teal shooting the Zat gun and Zat, or Jack like throws his head in front of the Zat I'm here, I'm here, I'm here, I'm here, I'm here.

[46:23] Oh, yeah. He's telling us to come over here. I don't know. Zach is going so rapid fire. You did say there'd be a lot of pew pew pews right uh-huh in fact i'm thinking i kind of nailed this one actually what's going on i don't know they just ran the only thing i'll say, well we can't let that happen sir well we'll talk about why not they've had access to our minds. They know everything about us. Everything? Everything. Tilk should have said everything. Everything? Everything. Everything.

[47:14] Design on that alien looks like a Krogan. Mass effect. Small one. Very small. Just a mouth. It's too bad they couldn't impersonate the Chevron guy. Yeah. Missed that guy. Oh, they're all there because the Supreme Leader is coming through. No, they just dialed out. Oh, they're leaving. Yeah, well, the foothold situation didn't work out for them. Close that iris! Serpentor was going to come and help out the Cobra Commander. Everyone freeze listen to her types like listen to somebody dump marbles on the countertop Oh.

[48:10] Music.

[48:18] My God. Hey, guess what? Not only is it a hologram imaging device, it's a bomb. You know, the gate... The thing wasn't closed all the way. Oh, my God.

[48:57] Yeah, there's a lot of them that still got away. Yeah. They're self-destructed. Their destruction appears to be complete. That's a lot of damage. A little touch-up. That stunt coordinator guy's going to have his hands full cleaning that up. I've ordered P3X-118 locked out of our dialing program. The human counterparts of those aliens woke up spontaneously. Block. We're assuming the signal stopped when they went through the stargate. Those who escaped still possess all the knowledge obtained from being linked to your minds. That's creepy. We've changed all our codes. That's all we can do. So, how did this happen exactly? The aliens came through the gate already impersonating SG-6? We rushed them to the infirmary. We don't remember anything after that. General Hammond asked me to come here, but wouldn't say why. Presumably their next step after the SG-6 was the Pentagon. Well, a high-frequency blast from the harmonic generator every time a team returns should prevent it from ever happening again. I like when they give us ways that we can't... This particular one? Yeah. Mayborn.

[50:20] Good save. I thought you'd like to know the alien posing as Dr. Jackson expired. What of the aliens that were not caught in the gate room explosion? We're guessing they were linked to their leader in some form or another when he self-destructed. What about the aliens that escaped through the gate? I guess we'll never know. We'll have to hope the same thing happened to them. We appreciate your help on this matter, Colonel Mayboard. Hope's not much of a strategy.

[51:04] Jack rolling out the uh red carpet extending the olive branch Oh, my God.

[51:20] All right jeff we are back having just watched foothold it's ended less than 30 seconds ago So your first time watch, my God knows how many time watch, to be honest with you, but I was looking for some messages. Jeff, you get to go first, my friend. Give us your thoughts on this episode. I think what you just said kind of sums it up here. God knows how many times. This is a wildly rewatchable episode, I think. Absolutely. Yeah, absolutely. This is a lot of fun. So I am a little bit older than you are. And so my, uh, formative like TV shows and movies, we have a little bit of difference there, but do you remember, I don't know, mid eighties, there was a show as a remake from like a fifties movie, but called invaders from Mars. Yep. Yeah. Yeah. Love that. I read that book when I was in grade school and they came out with the movie and we just watched the TV adaptation right here. Right. Right. Or more than that, hey, what if we did TNG's conspiracy just maybe a little bit, you know, with an actual ending to it? Without the worms? Yeah. A little boop, boop, boop, boop sticking out of their neck things. Time out. You know, I know that's a super popular episode for season one of TNG. I can't stand that episode. Really? I hate that episode. I do not like it. I don't like watching it. I don't think it's a great episode. I don't think it's a great episode.

[52:50] It's just, yeah, sorry. I like it. I think it's a, I don't know. I enjoy that one. It doesn't hold up. I will say that it does not hold up when you watch it. No, this was, this was a, this is a great episode. This is a lot of fun. And I think coming off what we watched last week, it needed to be like this needed to have, have some, some oomph to it a little bit, but just a good episode, right? Just, just here, Hey, here's a cool bad guy thing of the week. What I think I love the most that I got in this one is I love how this show has been written in such a way that my first instinct was they ended up in a fake SGC that someone built up and cloned them. And like that thought was totally feasible.

[53:42] Well, you've seen it before. Exactly. I mean, I think it was the beginning of this season, right? Like they woke up out of cryo freeze and they were in a fake SGC. They, they went to another world and there's a fake set of SG teams. Like it's, they've certainly built it up to be plausible for sure. I think, and they've given you the, uh, the science and the mechanism streams can get redirected, you know, the, the intercepted for things. And so it's like, Hey, you, you never know if where you're going is where you, you never know if where you end up is where you thought you were going.

[54:20] I thought that was cool. I want to give you a lot of credit on this one in that I was really enjoying this episode, but we paused partway through and you said, hey, do you believe that everything that Sam and Tilka are experiencing is actually what they're experiencing? There are aliens there, whatever. Or what fake Dr. Frazier said of, you know, it's the chemical spill. It's a hallucination. As soon as you asked that question, that hadn't even occurred to me at that point. When I was just taking it at face value and enjoying the whole thing, oh, it's going to be a whatever, that little wrinkle thrown in there added so much to this episode. Oh, my gosh, is this guy that? Is that really this? Is this this? And then when they kind of came out and they had the He-Man room with everybody hanging down. The He-Man room. I love it.

[55:07] They looked just like He-Man. They did, yeah. Absolutely. Yeah. So, yeah, super cool. I like this one quite a bit. Good tilk episode in the beginning, just a total. I mean, one man army kicking butt big time. I, we met major Davis for the first time. Not for the first time. This is actually his third appearance in the show. I happened to look it up after we talked about it, but yeah, that that's major Davis. We did see him in the episode, a matter of time. Okay. Which was the one that stuff happened in that narrow, that narrowed it down incredibly. Yeah. I wish I knew what it was A Matter of Time is...

[55:57] Oh, that's the one where Talon from Babylon 5 came in. He was the other colonel. Yeah. And time was slowing down because they were near a black hole, and they had to go down those little ropes towards the event horizon and all that kind of stuff. And for no reason, he let go and threw himself into it. Yeah. Yeah. Major Davis was one of the guys up top coordinating all that effort. We've also seen him in the episode, uh, into the fire, which was our, uh, season premiere, uh, of this episode. Oh, no, wait. Yeah. Yeah. It was a season. Uh, we, we saw him there, but I think this might be the first time we've really gotten any major words, any, you know, outside of a major Davis, we've been waiting for you. Here we go.

[56:46] Like even Jack was like, who are you? Yeah. Yeah. So uh major major davis is going to become a recurring character um and you'll get to, know him uh not quite on the level of dr frazier but you know yeah he's a guy who's wrong so nice, you'll see him in other other shows and you'll be like hey that's major davis from stargate like this will be where you know i'm from there he is that's kind of cool i think it was neat in this one may burn we've been we've been trained to know that guy's a piece of work we don't like him all the way up until almost the very end i was sure he was one of the uh one of the aliens but turns out he's just a jerk but jack gave him his due at the end and mayburn gave sam hurt hey you know i i credit all of this to uh to major carter hey and then he's like hey you know i'm gonna go maybe i'll see you again and jack says that would be nice i thought that was really cool We've had a lot of great leadership moments from O'Neill throughout the series so far, but this one was huge and one that we don't talk about a lot, just the whole idea of.

[57:56] Like you've proven yourself to be a not great and trustworthy person i'm not gonna i'm not gonna have that stick with you you can change you did good and i'm going to acknowledge that you did good i'm not gonna like tongue in cheek the whole thing and find a way to still insult you or whatever i thought a really big moment from uh from jack in this one in addition to my reactions brent we also are tracking a couple things in this series and we have a for crying out loud we get to add that to the list adding that to the list um you know what i really wanted i kept looking for i kept expecting it and just never manifested was a daniel death because had she shot fake daniel and we saw michael shanks die on screen that would count that's a daniel death and that would have counted uh but alas we did not um this is our first for crying out loud in quite a while it feels like it doesn't it it's uh yeah certainly feels like it but anyway uh.

[59:01] Grabbing our tracking sheet here which is where oh there it is uh this is going to bring us up jeff to 19 for crying out loud so far over the course of the show we are at six daniel deaths by the way for anybody doesn't feel like it's been that many but it has been that many we've got two indeeds i we've had to have missed some indeeds 100 i'm positive we have yeah yeah and we have three sam boyfriends so uh there is that just to just to update the tracking sheet there.

[59:34] Normally this is the piece where we shift and you talk about the messages and assign chevrons but i just want to pause for a minute and say my prediction i kind of i kind of sort of nailed this one here's the part you got wrong well the whole part about a big part of it well in your prediction you said the sg1 would return at just the right time and like later in the show and they'd pew pew it out and solve the whole problem it literally started with that yeah and then and And I thought, and I thought they were exactly as you nailed it. You got this one, dude. You nailed it. I'm going to count it. Yeah. Yeah. You get full point on this one for sure. I love it. Cause again, like not only is the show set itself up that I can automatically assume cool things, but it's also set itself up that with a name like foothold, I can do the math and say, well, somebody is going to come and attack because they're on the map now. I just, I don't know. I just love, I really want to acknowledge that for not being a serialized show, we've talked about this a lot, but it does such a great job of just planting the seeds and doing the world building that pays off in just little ways like this is really great. So I will tell you the title for next week's episode makes perfect sense.

[1:00:51] But only once you've seen the complete episode great great when when when we come to the end of next week's episode and you go that's why it's named that particular thing but i don't think you're going to know it until you get uh until you get through the episode okay you know uh but as soon as you do you're like oh of course because it recall it's one of those like it recolors the whole episode but it's not like deus ex machina like it's just been there the entire time you just didn't know oh i didn't see it that way yeah yeah yeah and it i want to know it changes it changes your perspective and i i'm really excited to get to you on that episode as well because for this one i'm sorry i know you're trying to transition but for this one i i really.

[1:01:39] What i didn't remember as a person who's seen this show for so long.

[1:01:44] Is was i just tracking the show taking everything at face value believing that these guys are really aliens and they're making up this bs story about hallucinations and whatever, or was i really going back and forth between wait is it a hallucination or is it real is it a hallucination or is it real and i'm not really sure which way it's going to go and i i wasn't sure how you took that as a first time we are so up until you planted the seed i was just taking it taking it as it was i didn't plant the seed the show playing the seed i just watered it a little, and just showed it hey look here's the thing germinating right here you missed it i'm curious if this episode recolored or reset anything for you as far as messages go did you did you find anything in this one you know jeff i said i said prior to watching this episode i was really excited because this is an episode that i didn't necessarily think would have a whole lot of, messages in it but i just felt this was going to be one that gave us a lot of messages and and i'd find something new in this episode i've never seen before this is an episode i've seen countless amount of times like for real like when i'm just hanging out want to watch an episode of stargate if i come across foothold i'm probably stopping and watching this episode it's just a fun episode to me i really really love this episode um unfortunately i was completely wrong jeff there's really not much going on in terms of message because even like.

[1:03:13] Did Mayborn do anything wrong? No.

[1:03:18] No, he didn't. Sam called him for help, and he said, okay, fine. Let me meet you. Also, in the meantime, I'm going to call General Hammond and see what's going on. Yeah. Now, he got lied to. He got duped. He got whatever. That's not necessarily on Colonel Mayborn's fault.

[1:03:37] That's not on him. Did Colonel Mayborn do anything to save the day? No. You know the only thing i think i could get and this maybe falls under the category of how to be better human beings to each other give credit where credit's due like we saw right there at the very tail end like hey thank you you're an enemy but we don't really like you but we're actually on the same side so we can you know at least be nice and who knows maybe we'll be friends maybe colonel mayborn said hey colonel your war is now my war and maybe we'll be friends.

[1:04:11] Or maybe he's a fascist this whole time and you can never be sure and i'm just gonna i just i'm gonna go back on this jeff when we were doing babylon five and went through that show for the first time in season three there's the bester character right and they said this line your was now my war and you and i both keyed into that it wasn't just me it wasn't just you and i both keyed into that went bester's going to be our good guy and then we went through a few episodes where, he was kind of on our side and then all of a sudden it just fizzled and nothing happened with it poof nothing and you know and and turns out bester became who best or what bester didn't become he just bester was always who he was he was a bad guy but you know what he wasn't he wasn't the chief villain of the entire show either he wasn't the chief architect or anything no but when you and I were, were like looking for this and we called this a drop story threat out of Babylon five.

[1:05:12] We got hammered yep hammered sometimes a bad guy is just a bad guy he's just a fascist you never make friends with fascists that's not what he meant he said you just put too much emphasis on that freeze and i'm like yeah because it's our first time we didn't know have you ever watched a show where a guy starts off as a bad guy and ends up as a friend right Did you ever watch Game of Thrones? Hello, Jamie Lannister. Right, exactly.

[1:05:47] He's just a fascist. And you know what? It wasn't until we got to season five that Captain Sheridan or President Sheridan at that point actually called him a fascist. Yeah, exactly. They're referring to psychos. What, fascist are us? I was like, oh. There it is, finally. Right. Oh, that's where you guys all got that idea that he's a fascist because they told you that that's what he was. Got the idea from the thing that we haven't watched yet that now you're lambasting us for not getting right it's because you know how do you not understand that this guy is not going to become a good guy at all although jeff to be fair you really were on the train of bester's going to turn out to be a good guy totally a lot you you were there a lot longer than i was well to be fair i was i was watching game of thrones as we were watching quite a bit of babylon so i mean you know it's it's that whole idea was you literally had jamie lannister right there you know i have him in my head quite a bit still if i'm being honest so, Just a me thing. Hello, if you are Jeff's sister, if you need help, you can call me. Okay. Maybe not the one you want to do. But anyway, extend an olive branch. Give credit where credit's due. You don't have to be enemies. You're actually on the same side.

[1:07:05] Is that really a heavy message in this episode? No. Is that what this episode's about? No. Are they trying to teach us anything? No. so while i that's one of those like if i'm grasping at straws i could maybe pull that out but i'm not giving this one any chevrons jeff that's fair that's very fair now i rate the episode based on how strong the message is sometimes there's just not one there but you know what there always is a spot on our 100 completely accurate and definitive ranking of season three of stargate sg1 which you my friend are solely in control of placing these episodes, in that order our current top five i'm going to go our top five here is uh the the double episode joel and our memories and devil you know which was what we had last week fantastic set of episodes there yeah number two was forever in a day which we heard about that one a lot here about the harcesis child and keb and trying to find out where keb is and you know it turns out it wasn't over there but who are these guys a fair game was another one learning curve was another episode and our number five is into the fire that would be our season premiere jeff does this episode crack the top five and if so and even if not where do you rank this episode foothold.

[1:08:28] Looking at some notes here this is a this i'm not gonna lie this is a tough one for me, and you might be surprised at where it's a tough one it's so i had to go back and look at some of my notes we've had uh some incredible episodes especially from last week um i don't know if this is going to be controversial or not but you know what it's my list i get to call things whatever i want you do this brent is going to be.

[1:08:59] Our new number four episode on the season wow all right i was i was i was almost i was considering is it going to be number three or number four but i really appreciated fair game for you know bringing in the asgard and just it was it was big it was a big episode and had a lot it was also really well done uh but definitely uh learning curve which is one air game just for those playing at home trying to remember fair game is the episode where we had the gould system lords come in and try to create the treaty and and try to include earth on the protected worlds treaty with the uh the asgard i was trying to think the thor's race you literally just said that a minute ago uh yeah so that was that was uh fair game so you're putting this one right below that episode uh right above learning curve which was a really good episode we just watched that one a couple of weeks ago and enjoyed it was cool another callback kind of episode thing but uh this was just i think that's what i'm really rating the side just on its re-watch ability like i literally.

[1:10:06] Might watch this when we're done recording again oh yeah it's absolutely worth it absolutely worth it well jeff uh that's going to do it for us here for foothold let's talk about next week's episode maybe it's an episode you'll also want to watch maybe not but you're not allowed to watch it till we do it together for the show i told you already this is an episode that once you see it you'll understand the name but i'm curious if maybe you'll be able to predict what the episode actually is about just based on the title the title for next week's episode is pretense, pretense i think pretense might be what's that all about.

[1:10:51] So my mind kind of goes to like pretense, post tense thing, but we've had, we've played with time a little bit already. This, uh, season pretense. I don't know. I don't know. Somebody, uh, I want to put this one on Hammond, but just some, Hammond's going to have an idea, a pretense, and they're going to operate on that. And, uh, it's going to be a big mistake. Like that's really general. I have no idea what this pretense doesn't really tell you a lot. Do you know, let's define what the word pretense means. Okay. Cause I, I kind of want to schmooze this in for you just a little bit. Uh, pretenses is when you are, um, putting up a front to mask what you're really trying to do. That's your pretense.

[1:11:46] I'm going to stick with the Hammond thing. Hammond's got a, false pretense going and he's got some other game that he's playing. Yeah. I don't think it's necessarily going to be nefarious though. Okay. Like that's going to be the thing at the end you figure out. It's like, Oh, he had this thing going the whole time. In fact, here we go. Here we go. Because it pretends doesn't have to be a negative thing. Right? So he's going to put him through some stuff like bad stuff or whatever. And in the end, And it's going to be like, hey, congratulations. General O'Neill, like maybe it's a whole thing, but a way to recognize somebody or promote somebody or something like that. So it's going to be a positive pretense. We're going to promote you, but actually what we're trying to do is make you retire.

[1:12:35] Get you out. Yeah. Congratulations. Here's your, here's your star and you can just go that way. Yeah. Thank you. Hey, we're going to take you off the bridge of your ship and we're going to make you an admiral and we're going to shelf you because we don't want to talk to you anymore. Yeah. well jeff i don't think they're going to shelf him but we'll yeah jeff you are a good guesser my friend oh well thank you we'll find out just how close you are next week right here on stargate sg1 for the first time hey listen thank you guys out there so much for joining us don't forget that wherever you're getting this show whether it's on youtube or patreon or uh apple podcast google podcast not anymore because that went away a while ago um but uh where else spotify um audible.com if you're listening overcast overcast box gosh are those still around geez uh wherever you're listening to us leave us a rating and review uh particularly if that's available on whatever platform you are that really helps that helps spread the word it helps let people know that this is a cool show and the biggest thing you can do that we would really appreciate is you share this show with somebody else that you know who loves stargate sg1 or somebody who like my friend jeff over there needs to get into the gate for the very first time so with that we're going to sign off here for today saying hey brett yes jeff.

[1:14:04] It occurs to me how do i know that you are really you.

[1:14:12] How I need you to I need you to open your shirt up I need to see your chest, come on just open it up let me see make sure it's just you, for crying out loud.

[1:14:32] Music.
