EP43 - Ex Machina (2014)
Welcome to Cyberpunk Cinema – the Definitive Dive into the Dark Future of Science Fiction. I am your host, Anthony La Pira, and I will be taking you on a cinematic journey through the sprawling cityscapes, the crippling datastorms, and the cybernetic implants that encompass all things Cyberpunk.
In this week’s episode, I will be breaking-down the 2014 cyberpunk thriller EX MACHINA – written and directed by Alex Garland; starring Alicia Vikander, Domhall Gleeson, and Oscar Isaac.
A young programmer is selected to participate in a ground-breaking experiment in synthetic intelligence by evaluating the human qualities of a highly advanced humanoid A.I.
Ex Machina was the directorial debut by Alex Garland after he busted onto the scene writing screenplays for The Beach, 28 Days Later, Sunshine, Never Let Me Go, and Dredd. He was a celebrated writer who became a critically acclaimed director, which is a rare feat in Hollywood at this level. Overall, his filmmaking has been excellent and he definitely has his own voice and I can’t wait to see what else he has in store for us in the future.
So, do me a favor – it’s time to access your cranial jacks, boot up your Ono-Sendai Cyberspace 7, and slap on your damn mirror-shades. You know what time it is! Cyberpunk Cinema starts…now!
