It's the Rock and Roll Chicago podcast Hey everybody, it's Ray the roadie and this is Hollywood Mike once again Once again, once again every week every single every single week. I got the same I would my over and over again up 300 and something just doesn't stop.

It won't go away. Nope Yeah, I'm festering boil. I was gonna say herpes, but yeah festering boil works.

Well, mm-hmm that works, too Yeah, it does. Yes. Yeah, just like I'm not head or something like you just like a bump on your forehead or something Like you beamed in a head with a baseball and it won't go away.

Yeah. Yeah, and you know, there's no crying in baseball There is no crying Yeah, absolutely. Just take that hit and Laugh and laugh with it, right? Yeah, absolutely who we got in the studio.

No crying in baseball Yeah, we just cut that out abrupt and all that's unscripted that yeah It does so is that literally where the name of the band came from is from the movie Who's the who was the fan I came up with a name yeah, I came up with a name we all agreed on it I was just thinking like of 90s catchphrases, right? did a quick Google and that one came up and Everyone agreed with me. So well, you know, I guess I guess you're lucky because it could have I mean could have come up Have fun storming the castle Or any one of 15 quotable quotes from the bride Are we gonna go around are we gonna do that? I mean we could totally go down an entire different direction and just do movie quotes I think I know all of them from from Princess Bride, but we're not gonna do that Yeah, so tell us about no crying in baseball what the what the heck is that all about Because you can't tell what the heck it is from the name now Now you're right Who's the are you the mastermind behind this? No, he was the Kevin here was the mastermind who started it I just Kevin all right on it now. So run it.

Okay, so let's talk to Kevin for a minute So Kevin, so you put this whole thing together, right? In an essence. Yeah, so I had a high school band with Kyle and Dave in it And me personally I've had kind of a semi pro career, right and I figured at a certain age People kind of look at you with your original music and say aren't you a little old for that, right? So I kind of promised myself I would retire by starting a cover band And the 90s are it's music that was very close to my heart, right? So I was happy as a kid I love the music. So that's how it all started with with my best friends from high school And then we found these wonderfully talented people Garrett and cam to help us out as well.

So that's the basics of how it started. Yeah. Yeah, so it's all who's your first phone Call I think it was Dave.

Yeah, I think so. Yeah, and what do you do in the band Dave? I'm the bassist bassist. Okay, really? I just sit there and be quiet and you guys everybody else work, right, right exactly Oh, I'm so sorry, man.

I just saw her whack her head in the camera like that You can talk out loud, I mean, it's a podcast you can say you can even say shit if you want. Okay, there you go So you guys were all like like high school friends. Yeah What 90 98 99 has this been going on since then not good.

No, okay All right We've done what a few projects off and on So I'd say we the three of us have been playing together on and off for about what 28 years longer than that Maybe a little bit Yeah, it was it was it was the fall of 99 Kyle and I started playing together and then we started our high school band Think December 99. That sounds weird or so. Were you still as I go at the time in 1999? He's our baby brother.

Yeah Actually started the band And who's the drummer That would be me W okay, you're the drummer. All right. Okay and guitar player guitar player We got Kevin on lead guitar I'm the pyrotechnic Okay, also on guitar Here is our lead vocalist in our front man.

Gotcha. Gotcha. Okay, excellent So you guys seem like you have a lot of fun together How long has this been going on like like this the inception of this band right here? Well, the five of us and what about a year at this point? Yeah, October of 24 is when I joined in.

Okay The project's been going on for a little over like two years like two and a half years. Oh, yeah, you're right Yeah, all cover songs now all comes because you've you've retired and you're not doing original music. Kevin's Kevin's retired.

Okay Couple just being it for myself. I'm retired the rest can yeah a couple of you said you're really into jazz. Who is that? Okay, Ron.

Why did I know and they'll be me too. Yeah. Okay.

Yeah, so so so I mean you're you're young guy. What what got you into jazz? So, oh do we get the cricket So I got into jazz when Well, I started in like middle school jazz like and that's like you're just kind of like forced into it like I didn't really like really get into it until I actually had like Friends in high school who actually really did listen to jazz and they're like you got to realize that like jazz is like totally Like a free music you get like a sheet of music like a chart and you totally make what you want out of it And then I ended up going to a jazz school in Chicago and ever since I've been playing with little jazz groups and stuff Yeah, yeah, so I mean it's it's I mean it's ingrained It's not just something that you kind of mess around with you actually do that. Yeah, awesome And where did where did the same thing like high school jazz band or something? Well, it ended up with that route, but what actually got me into it was the movie that thing you do Okay So, you know, it follows guy Patterson And yeah, he even though he ends up in a rock band like he's big time into jazz big time into you know, the the actual improv of it all and I was already an aspiring drummer as a kid when that movie came out and I just I wanted to do everything that he did in that movie, but on the jazz side and he just just really opened up my mind to it and then from there I Started to kind of listen to my own stuff and and try to replicate it on the drums I remember there's a scene in that film where he goes to a club in LA and The drummer breaks out into this just amazing swing solo and I'm watching it with my dad And and he looks at me and I think I was 12 at the time and he goes I bet you can't do that And I'm watching and the guy made it look so easy yeah, and so I go get behind the drums the next day and I'm thinking I can replicate it and It you want to talk dumpster fire.

And so at that point I wanted to figure out what the like the Just the secret behind jazz drumming was and then it's all history from there. I just kind of stuck with it Yeah, yeah, and when he wants to irritate everybody else in the band, does he do the drum intro to that thing you do? Yes, man That is actually a cool intro to that song. I know well, I definitely have a little one of my favorite moves roots, though That's I think I didn't even think of that That's definitely how I got into jazz is because my parents are big blues heads Yeah, so I mean I and I feel like they kind of play into each other a little bit in the improv sec Yeah, yeah Yeah I mean Yeah when you know a lot of blues guys came around and made the genre a little bit more interesting by throwing in some minor seventh Chords and minor nine chords and stuff like that And all of a sudden you had this whole other style of blues that was born, you know, the Chicago style st Louis style, you know the Memphis style with BB King and the sounds like you're talking about ribs You know, you never know I'm maybe I'm just hungry you never know ribs goes with blues I mean how many times if you go into the blues, that's right serving ribs I mean, it's probably a good bend, you know blend together.

So what about the rest of you guys? I mean who's doing this just because they want girls or it's their hobby Is anybody just doing it for the hell of it? Yeah, I get it's always the lead singer Definitely not doing it for the hell of it, but Single for a year ready to mingle but no no, no, no, dude ever since I was a kid There's never been like a stage that I haven't wanted to be on I mean there was a little fireplace in my grandmother's house when I was a kid and it was kind of like this raised thing and I would get up there and do impressions and shit or you know, just like Whatever just just to impress the family, you know got into choir from a young age You know my older brother and sister were in the show choir so then I followed into that and then in the musical theater and then you know had kids took a break for a long time from everything and Then finally the opportunity started opening up again and I'm like nah, man, this is where I've always wanted to be This has always been the goal. I just needed to Square things away in my life to a certain point in order to get there at least for me to feel comfortable You know, like leaving the kids behind at home, but not behind, you know No, sorry daddy's got to go be a rock star go fend for yourself you're old enough Yes, here's a shovel in a water hole. Yeah, go plant a tomato plant.

Yeah, you'll be fine Survival skills at 12 and 13 they got this. Yeah That was me. I was Gen X latchkey.

That's for sure. Yeah, so what's on your playlist, you know? We've got we do Green Day Bush no, no, no, no, I'm sorry not not what's on your set list. Sorry So your personal playlist? Oh, what kind of stuff are you listening to? What do you influence by? Everything I mean from Elton John, which I know way out there for what we're doing Not at all.

Really. I mean Elton John was true. Elton John was alternative for his time He really really was and I do know that's what I grew up on him Billy Joel Just amazing So I I learned I taught myself how to play the piano by going out and buying the Billy Joel Anthology songbook and learn how to play a cover-to-cover.

Okay That was that was just a Billy Joel. I have seen him more times in concert than anybody else I think I've seen him in concert about 15 times, dude. That's awesome.

Yeah, and I and I was one of the people you hear the story he senses he sends somebody from his organization to the very back row of the stadium and Gives them front row tickets right and tells him to go down sit in front row He he always reserves front row center for himself. Huh? He always wants to do that, right? Oh, yeah, that was me one day No kid. Yeah, that was that was me one lucky guy.

Yeah Yeah We're just I was there with my wife and a couple of our friends and this person comes over and at first I was like Yeah, you're bullshitting. She comes over. She goes Hey Billy Joe just wants to let you know that if you promise to just jump up and down and dance and scream and have a good Time you can have these front row tickets early.

Yeah, whatever you go. No, seriously. No come be the hype man down there Yeah, we were right frickin down there in the front row.

That's awesome. Yeah What sounds like you were asking earlier? Who would you fly overseas to see and sounds like Billy Joel might be your guy? Well, but I don't have to though because I've seen him here so many times, but I guess I would fly overseas to see Elton John Yeah, although I but I've seen him here too, though So did you see him on the goodbye yellow brick road tour? Final one. No, no, no, but you know, this podcast is not about me But this is a cool ass story to tell so for my 18th birthday a bunch of my friends got together and wanted to throw me a surprise party and it took place at Poplar Creek Outdoor Music Theater up in Schaumburg for the Elton John concert Yeah, it was full and and I can't it was the I can't remember the album that was it was the album where he It was the album where he gave up all of his costumes and he just starts.

He's just started playing in a tuxedo Yeah. Oh, yes red strikes back. I believe was the name of the album.

Okay, and so on the way there I have this I have this friend that let's just say he's kind of visually impaired and He says look I have to drive because if I give you directions, you're gonna know where we're going So you I've got a drive So he's driving my mom's car and he's the kind of guy that would always want to talk to you I'm sitting right here He's trying to talk to me. He's driving at the same time and I have to keep saying yo turn your head Look, yes watch where you're going Turn this way in his hand would start going like this along with his head, right and we're swerving all over the place He's not drunk or anything like that. And I'm talking about Tom.

Look stop. Boom. He rear-ends this giant-ass van My mom this was like a 1984 Ford Escort right didn't got completely totaled the guy in the vans on his way to the concert.

Here's my stuff exchange You know, whatever car won't even start. We're like, what the hell do we do now? So we walk across the street that his place called hugging on Higgins Which by the way happened to be the first place I ever played a gig as a musician But that was a few years later these 18 year olds begging. Please.

Let us come inside so we can call our mom We're sitting on the steps of hugging on Higgins right and across the cornfield I see the laser light show start and the preamble to love lies bleeding in my hands is playing And that's when he tells me we're supposed to be there That's that's an awesome story, that's my that's my Elton John story, but yeah, I still I still don't know who that would be so a Little bit of everything same thing for everybody else. Oh, yeah. I think yeah, I think I'm probably More into like the industrial sound.

Oh, yeah typo negative type of negative. Yeah Early ministry. Yeah, actually listening to early ministry on the way up here.

Okay. All right, we acknowledge it you like typo negative to we acknowledge that Make the voice. No, we get it.

Yeah, we have an eclectic taste. I think I think that's what we're trying to say Okay, right overall. That's fair.

So now so now then let's go back to what we we kind of jump to So what is your set list like now? So you got all these influences What are you guys putting together and what's a night of music like with you guys? I mean ideally 90s rock alternative, right? So Weezer Bush Green Day, you know, it's kind of like listening to Q&A one, right? Somewhere between 19 in a heyday. Yeah, basically is what I'm trying to do because that was those are the fond memories that I had Right, so we're just we're just here to have a good time Yeah, and we want everyone else to have a good time with us. Basically is what our set list is Yeah, yes, so with all of your influences and and eccentric and Eccentricities I believe is the word I'll give you that.

Okay, where does that where does that all come together? And how does that affect the music when you're actually trying to play covers? I'd say, you know for at least for Gen X millennial generation, like we're the nostalgia generations, you know I mean we of all We kind of got screwed in so many different ways. So it seems like the 90s seems to draw everybody back and It was just a great decade. I mean if you really think of the past 40 years, it was an amazing decade It was an it was a really huge turning point for music And as far as just everything that we represent coming together I'd say we want to make sure we take that energy to the stage and Give the audience the show of their lives so that they we want to take them back to that decade We want them to to hear a cover that we're playing like we we cover We just a show we did over the weekend We opened up with bowls on parade and nice I would love for where the audience is thinking back to a specific point When that song came out like what they were doing or where they were going or where they were hanging out and it just take Them back to that moment.

Yeah the best thing that we've seen so far at least that I have is you know when you're the Realization on the face of the of the crowd when they're like, oh man, I know that song Oh, I love that song and then they start singing along with you and you're like, yes This is this is the feeling that we're trying to bring to you right now is Just joy. Yeah, I think Kevin or Kyle nailed it I think the 90s was a period of optimism and I think that's what a lot of people miss I think that a lot of people like this kind of music because it reminds them of that that sense that hey things are gonna Be okay, and I think honestly we need that right now. Yeah Yeah There it was there was the early 90s was a there was a transition period a very interesting transition period because you came out of the Well, everybody still talks about 80s music God people play 80s music all over the place It's everywhere right and you get to the end of the 80s when hair metal was yeah popular That's right.

I mean, yeah, believe it or not. I had a hot pink guitar and leather pants and long hair I was I did all that stuff and I mean I was in I was in Queensryche tribute bands and Bands and you know, I did all that I did all it's I was just a singer back then I absolutely love doing that stuff then, you know, Nirvana kind of ruined a lot for hair bands, right? but then when the 90s came around again, I think you're I think you're right about the optimism because The 90s kind of blended all of that stuff together and and just kind of like crapped out this kind of music I don't want to that's that's a weird way to say because the music wasn't bad at all I guess just kind of regurgitated back out of all these different influences and it came out It was like BAM you get 90s music and the amazing thing about it is We're being shown a photograph of you You are gorgeous That wasn't from that wasn't from the 80s or 90s I got my my band got hired to play the Rocky Horror Picture Show album live So did these guys? Yeah, and and so that was my version of frankenfurter. I wasn't gonna do that So I did the assless chaps in the gold underwear and the cowboy hat and that you know And and the leather vest with the makeup.

Yeah, so that was my version of frankenfurter We just did Rocky Horror together back in October. Did you really? Yeah, and I played riff-raff. It was a great time And again, I was just the drummer, but I was on stage.

So we dressed up just like the rest of them Yeah, I mean we didn't do the play. They just wanted us to play the album live So that's what we did We played the album live and they had the movie going on I use monitors and all that good stuff But the 90s what I love about it is the authenticity that it that it brought to the mainstream, right? So all of a sudden the underground was the mainstream So like as a kid I was exposed to all these amazing bands that I might not have been able to be exposed to if it weren't for Nirvana So it's just it holds a very special place in my heart like 90s music Yes, and for the first time in a long time people were able to say again I knew that band back when they were playing clubs People used to say that in the 50s in the 60s and and somewhat in the 70s But by the mid 70s and through the 80s, you didn't hear that anymore because bands were being made at the boardroom And now people started talking about yeah You know, I was in Seattle and saw Soundgarden and you know They just came out with an album and and stuff like that So that was really cool thing about the 90s and people still hear 90s music on the radio today and don't realize that it's from The 90s they think it's from you know, the mid 2000s or something that they don't realize that that music is It's considered classic rock nowadays It is coming on the classic rock stations, man. Yeah.

Yeah, when did I get old? I loved it So I tell you what, I can't I can't wait to hear what you guys are gonna play for us because I have a feeling You're gonna play some of my favorites. I can't wait to hear it. So I think it's I think it's that time It's that time.

Yeah. Yeah. Yeah, and especially if you don't You know retune your guitar slightly and just decide now.

I'm gonna use my fingers to do it, right? And yeah, then it becomes extremely difficult. You know what, you know another song I don't know if you guys play do you guys play Vaseline by them? No, but I love Okay, it's when I've been trying to get us to play a bit. Yeah It does a great way of kind of marrying together the styles you guys bring the tape to the table because of the jazz chords And everything's they wrote In that so that was a good selection.

It sounded really well and it's I mean you guys I mean People have played it before and the tendency is to just kind of dig in When you play it, but you guys you guys showed some restraint and made it nice of my life. It was really nice I enjoyed that performance There's a really good unplugged that they did I forget forget when but it's it's the full man And it's just absolutely gorgeous. Yeah the blend of the sound I'm pretty sure I saw it because I'm it had to have been the Like like the MTV unplugged thing or whatever, I'm pretty sure I saw it because I seem to remember that a lot They have a cover Well, it's not a cover.

They did their own song. They did a version of sex type thing for that, too That was like totally jazzy. Yeah, totally slow.

It's like We should do that yeah Acapella just like that Yeah, let's hear those vocals Kevin yeah, please no So so who decides on the songs, I mean it's a lot of times it's everybody Group effort committee, you know, we we run it by if I was obviously I'll have a band group chat that you know Hey, you know, I got this idea. Hey this, you know, what do we think about that? Vote down to my son. Yeah.

I think so. Wait a minute. I almost died two weeks ago So so you had you you took it upon yourself to make sure that there's always bananas.

Yes, because of a potassium deficiency I was like bananas. Yes, okay Run Did you know I'm gonna give you a very good sage piece of advice. Okay, never make eye contact with somebody while eating a banana You don't want to give him ideas man We have gone down a completely different he brought that some somewhat civilized run to the table tonight There's something about they say talent with mental illness kind of right Ella with mental illness Yeah, I mean he did play our last show and I'm evil Knievel like full jumpsuit like flame retardant jumpsuit Wow, and it was like a friends episode where you had to put powder and shit down there to peel it off Okay, yeah that raw scene, yeah I'm sure the things interesting.

So so so how long is this? How long has this been going on? Was there pre-run anything? So we run always love bananas I'm eating I'm eating this banana and did you know did you know you're supposed to peel peel it Upside down. Yeah, really, but I don't do it though because look at this what happens when you when you do it this way It has this disgusting looking nipple thing on the end of it here. Yeah, and I can't get over it Feeling peeling bananas from upside down is for the week I've never been so happy to have a banana in my life.

Mm-hmm. Pretty good. Make eye contact with me Eat it when you eat.

Oh my god. Look at that. I don't know.

He viciously went right for the head of that thing That was kind of I think we're learning stuff The thing is we're all learning stuff my cam comes back down to earth right which reassures me that he's okay Every once in a while. I kind of I raise my brown. Don't go there.

He is. He's okay. He's having a moment You know, you should probably smash a moment or whatever that we kind of created this monster because his full name is Cameron and Everyone was calling him cam and I don't remember if it was me or if his dad one of us finally said, you know How come nobody calls you Ron? That would be funny people started calling you Ron and from there.

It just snowballed in Should we tell them about the trunk? No What's the trunk Garrett was Garrett was at the bar Garrett was talking to woman The bartender Ron has Ron Ron may or may not have three dead hookers in his car She we never saw her again I Mean what was the thing when he walked out of the room? What was the first thing I said? Yeah, do you ask how high I was? That's pretty much him this is him that's him right there. Okay. Wow.

So but damn you can play So how long is it? So how long is this this whole thing? We're going to how long have you guys been a band? It's a project wise. Let's say about what three years. I think it was It might have been 20 20 like late 2023 or summer 2023.

We first started it We originally had a different guitarist And we went for a while I'd say about a year where we had a guitarist singer and then just for many reasons it just didn't work out and so we were in need of a singer slash guitarist or both and We kind of had to start over because we had built up an entire set list with the previous musician and you know just bands change musicians all the time and it ended up where a Lot of us do musical theater as well and I do a lot of drum work for that and that's actually where I met both Garrett and Ron over here And Just their ability to sing an ability to play guitar. I asked the guys I said, hey can we bring them in for an audition and the rest has been history and It's just been it's been great chemistry with all five of us and we've just been building ever since The culture is great the chemistry is there we have a great time And we sound a lot better with Garrett and cam in the band And again, just cool Coolest kid in the world like Jen's ear showed to band practice wearing a pavement t-shirt. Yeah, I was like he's in But no he can play really really really well And I would say that cam and Kyle are maybe the only music actual musicians in the band I'm just a boneheaded rock and roller.

So it's good to have some people. They're like that's actually diminished third Kevin I'm like, right. Okay, cool Yeah, the band's great.

So what was the what was your first gig? Montrose Saloon. Yeah, Montrose Saloon Montrose Saloon back in September. No kidding.

Yeah, they kicked Ron out of that gig Yeah, he wasn't allowed in You know, he was too young. So it was the hookers. Oh Really? Well, I've never heard of that before.

Yeah, the doorman wouldn't let him in So, you know if we ever do write an original song, it's it's gonna be called dickhead doorman It's gonna be about him dickhead doorman. Yeah. Yeah We had to read revamp the whole set right there on the spot and go.

All right, what can we do without him? Yeah, it still went still went. Well, we missed him. We were trying to get him a Wireless setup so we could just play from outside the door, right? They're still like no go go you guys come in not it.

Yeah, that's Weird right because I've played so many shows, you know with you know, 20 year olds or whatever myself before I was 21 I would play why does it matter? Yeah put an X on his forehead. His parents were there, too Yeah, like why it was so weird. We have a there's actually a band that's been on the podcast And I mean, they're all 21 now But when the band first started they were all in high school the bands called don't matter to me and they played they played all Over the place.

Yeah I don't know. What was up with the Montreux saloons sales. They're tanking after this podcast If you're listening But by the way Montreux saloon, you know, we're looking for sponsors Montreux saloon I don't think they will.

Yeah, I don't there's no such thing as bad publicity, right? Employees can be replaced. Yeah, you know and I asked this question every once in a while But only when I know that it's gonna be good. So what what was your favorite gig? Hmm, I liked the one we just did.
