You kind of threw me off there. Yeah, I guess a little bit I had to look to see if it was really you. Yeah, it's the glasses.
Yeah. Okay. They make me look a little more handsome than Normal, I know without a doubt.
Yeah, I don't know. Who the heck is that talking people? Yeah, I know His voice is on a long delay because we've been asking this band for like a year to get their asses in the studio And finally about time, you know, and I know I know Tom I know this guy right over here and you know, and we had to contact Deb in order to get them in the band Yeah, well, I wouldn't answer him, you know Do it so please welcome to the studio everybody the procrastinators No Not the procrastinators, it's bottoms up bottoms up the bottoms up and we gotta do that again Bottoms up with a Z who does that anymore? This isn't this isn't the 80s. You're not supposed to say bottoms with a Z Bottoms with an S you'll get to some really unique websites Yeah, you got to be careful when you're searching for the band bottoms up you got to put bottoms up band Yes, can't put bottoms up because you might have the FBI at your door So the whole band started off as like a fetish thing You know, I wanted to expound on that a little bit but yeah, yeah total ass man.
Yeah, you're ass, man Name the bottoms up and let me guess the guys were the first ones you called, right? Absolutely Yeah, I reached took me a long time to get all of these two guys and finally, you know I don't know what we're talking about now. He's The name actually as a joke. Yeah, what's that? Yeah, I said Tommy we're trying to figure out a name I said, well, maybe you can go out and twerk on the dance floor Oh, and we went from another name and I said, well, what about bottoms up as a joke? And yeah, I know wait a minute that might work.
I'm like don't twerk, please Oh, no No, you don't give us a little twerk. Go ahead Are we on the camera? I don't want to see we have to do color commentary. Okay, you know with the twerking.
This is actually our twerker, right? Yeah, absolutely making a clap. Yeah Are you the drummer? No, no, you're not the drum. Who's the drummer? Oh, that's you.
Okay. All right That's why he's sitting over there quiet. You guys have him well-trained.
You never put a microphone in front of a drummer Yeah, you don't know what's gonna happen. We don't know. Yeah, you're better off that way.
Yeah, you never you never know What's gonna have a drummers drummers, you know, they're just they don't say much but when they do it's embarrassing. Yeah They're like the EF ponton of the world, you know when they talk people listen, yeah Oh What what does he say that's props So well, too, yeah, it's another we can't The family show no hell it is It really isn't so if you've got an inside joke, you know, let's let's hear it. I don't know about that I'm ready to release the inside joke.
No, we can't. Sorry, bro. All right, you're not gonna be the one to do it Okay, well you heard here.
No releases from the bottom. No, you know We got 2,000 followers Yeah, yeah, can we go negative the other half are saying why won't they talk about it we want to hear this yeah Come to a show. You're gonna lose half either way Come to a show Come and ask us we'll talk to y'all about it about okay about the inside joke I guess it wouldn't be it wouldn't be an inside joke.
I couldn't he gave up his principal so quickly I was gonna see how long He's like just come to a show. It doesn't take much Man so we got a lot of stuff happening in music in history This is this is an interesting day for you guys to be in the studio today Did you know that because number one this is the I mean well granted I think I think by now we do this so often Everybody realizes that this is like recorded two weeks in advance or whatever, but today's the anniversary of the passing of Prince. Oh Yeah, can you believe that? 2017 right 2016 I believe it was 2016 but it's so weird because it doesn't seem like it was 10 years ago.
Yeah Yeah, yeah, you know it's like if people are still talking about it in two days past 420 It is it is. Oh, yeah, no kidding. Oh wow That's great.
I survived another one Dave Matthews Dave Mason died. Yeah. Yeah, Mason.
I saw him at the Rialto here last time. He was here Yeah Yeah you know and I went down a rabbit hole on him because I was you know I Knew of a couple of songs like a lot of people don't realize that he wrote Feeling all right right because Joe Cocker made the song so famous, but he wrote that when he was in traffic Yeah, and then that was the other thing I you could ask ten people I bet you I bet you not one of them is gonna know that he was in traffic. That's right I don't know that Yeah, and and that he wrote that song when he was in traffic people of a certain age know yes Well, you know I don't even know if it's a people of a certain age it's people who knew the band because I was having that discussion with people of a certain age who should have known that and They all had that look on their face like no he wasn't he was let's see and then he started going through it I started naming the members in traffic, and I said Yeah, and Dave Mason.
You know we had to be a traffic fan. Yeah Yeah, yeah sure that's for sure, but yeah, yeah, it's just it's terrible. You know that That happened it well.
He's an old guy. I mean how long you gonna live you know yeah But you know go down go down a rabbit hole with that guy because it's amazing who he was with I mean He wrote music with with Eric Clapton with Delaney and Bonnie. Yeah, he was with Fleetwood Mac for a couple years Yeah, I mean just amazing the amount of people that the guy played with in the songs that he wrote Yeah, absolutely quite a talent.
Yeah, it's out. Yeah, and and the one that intrigued me the most That I that I saw today Today was the first time that it was 1963 I think I think was the year it was the first time that the Beatles and the Rolling Stones met each other Is that a fact and they played a show together at a small club somewhere in London? Oh, and this is the day that was that's accredited with the whole Beatles or stones Yeah, and everybody says are you Beatles guy or your stones guy well that was that was today in like 1963 Found that pretty interesting yeah, this historical moment is brought to you by Well I think it's appropriate because these guys play a pretty wide range of music yes, yeah, we do yeah, so tell us about that Mr.. Wanna go Who can start who started constructing the band this microphone smells like cigars were you talking? No He works at a cigar shop, so all right, but somebody was in here You know earlier today talking in his microphone. It smells like cigars.
It wasn't me. Okay. It wasn't me.
I swear yeah No, so Tommy and I were in a different band for a little while and it broke up and he called me Probably within a few days and said hey, and I knew you during that band. What was that? That was that what was that band well, I was in a band called heads up. Yes, that's it yes heads up Yeah, heads up, but I'm sensing a trend here Yeah heads up bottoms up I Actually my first band heads up.
I think actually you called me right you found me on band mix or something And I was actually in a duo trio with my husband for 20 years, and he didn't want to do it anymore He said go find a band, and I said okay. I didn't know what to do I didn't know who to reach out to somebody told me get on band mix next thing. You know Tommy's calling me and Started in that band, and I think we were together about three years three years three years Yeah, and then it broke up health reasons in that in the band, but he called he goes You know I'm not really ready to be done.
Do you want to like start another band with me? I'm like yeah, like let's do this now. I'm into it, and it's fun, and I want to do it, so that's where we Asked our bass player. We just got a new drummer in that band.
They both wanted to come over so you know we were like That's great. We just have to find a guitar player so we We found scary Gary. We found scary Gary So yeah the timing was perfect because I was just finishing a project We were we were involved in for a while And I was like the band kind of people were drifting doing their own kind of thing or consistent like you know how bands They sometimes reach that limit, and I'm like I don't I think I'm pretty much done here So it was like our last gig was like on a Saturday.
I get up Sunday looking at me not go Asking me. I said is this some kind of somebody the next morning I see this thing we're looking for a lead guitar player. Would you be interested, and I'm like who's this guy you know I? Kind of like the body's not even cold yet The guitar is still like turned on me at least turn it off for a second, but no it you know so I says okay Let me let me go out there and try and you know see how it goes so we set up an audition Went to it came home my wife goes, so how did it go? I go well if they don't pick me.
I'm gonna jump out a window, but I said Well I really I says it was very the camaraderie was like already you know like I felt very comfortable These are people who are professional They've done it for a long time We're all in for the same the culture of the band was set And I think that just made the transition and trying to piece it together Just the course of this was just that much more butter at the time so and it worked That much more better You know I don't know if you caught that, but he passively aggressively called you all old Yeah You're fired So yeah, I had asked you know my husband a few times like do you want to sing in the band? He's like no, and so he was doing our sound he still does like sound in that But we're trying to get him on a little bit more now He's a little more interested to join us not just Neil Diamond bum bum bum all the time It's like come on do some more stuff. You know You're not gonna play that song in the studio He asked me at home. He goes.
We're not gonna sing that I go no But yeah, so we ended up then I was like well of course. I wanted a backup singer I wanted another female too, so we had a few along the way and yeah, we did a little crazy But anyway, so we were looking again and another kind of story with like Gary with Deb Reached out to her and you can say kind of what was happening there Well, I mean just like Gary You know you kind of know when your time with a band is coming to an end and and I wasn't looking Really for another bed I was trying to still make things kind of work out But sand I was on bad mix from years ago when I was in another band And we were looking for another female singer so seeing I didn't even know I had an account anymore and Sandy reached out to me in a bluegrass group reached out to me And they both wanted a backup singer, and I thought you know what that's what I want to do You know because that way I can still work on my own stuff kind of on the side But I didn't want to learn somebody else's bluegrass music. You know original stuff so And they I looked at their song list I had seen videos of this band, and I thought they're a really good band I'm like I'd like to be in a band like you know like that so I was really excited I auditioned and you know they're just fun.
You know I mean I mean when when a band says we just want to have fun Yeah, they all say that but it's not always But we work hard, but we have fun I was surprised when I saw that you joined the band not because not because I don't think they're a Good band or anything like that But I knew you were doing your solo thing and writing your own stuff and recording and open mics And you I always thought of you as more as a singer songwriter in solo performer Then when I saw that you joined a band as a backup singer. I was like she's doing it for the money And you know when your husband comes in and you order dinner, and you did you know in the gas, and yeah, so you're playing for free You know I mean, and I can still do the singer-songwriter stuff, and I still host an open mic I don't do those three four hour solo shows anymore because you have to You have only so much time, but I still work on my own stuff So I feel like I got the best of both worlds you know and and I always love singing harmonies So and and Sandy I honest to God there is not another woman that I would back up I have auditioned for other bands as a backup in it like after a while No, you know or either wasn't the right kind of music, but I mean this is the music I grew up with you know so but no I wouldn't sing with for any other you know so nice So yeah, no, and I I believe it she says that today I mean Pat Benatar is calling looking for a backup singer. She's dropping you guys like a bad habit There's a price I was gonna say everything's got a price right yeah But no yeah, and now you've been with us Two and a half years yeah, and so about a year ago We were just talking to Jeff about this so we don't have our bass player Kevin.
We have two Kevins, but that's my Kevvy Anyways, that Kevin Howard. What does your Kevvy do in the band wait? What do you do? He's a singer okay? You sing in the band. I do okay a few songs kind of joined I'm doing some singing within the last six months or so okay Kind of a newer thing kind of I don't remember seeing you on stage with them and all the pictures in the whole bit So it is somewhat of a new yes.
Yeah a little bit new We've been singing together for 25 years, and I just kind of wanted to take a break Okay, starting to get to me a little bit And I said you know I'll just kind of sit back and watch it and Do the sound for him and see what happens and then all of a sudden she pulled me right back in there I am yeah, okay, just when you think you can get out Yeah, so like within the last year we were just talking to Jeff about this like I said Jeff and Kevin who's not with us tonight Joined at this pretty much the same time like yeah, and that was another kind of crazy story I don't know Gary or Jeff want to tell it how we ended up getting you I mean you were kind of on the edge of another Jeff can do it yes, so okay. That's enough from the drummer I Was in a band and our guitar player had told us that he was quitting so I reached out to Gary because he and I had played in a couple bands in the past and He said well. No.
I'm I'm working with this other band, but hey we we need a drummer So yeah, you want to come audition for that so I wasn't super happy with the previous project, so I So I came in audition with these guys and It worked out well, and it's been yeah, everybody's really great. It's super fun. We've been having yeah, it's been yeah Yeah, so what so what's your so so what's your best? Oh shit story? Oh shit? Sorry? Yeah, it was give us a no shit story like what happened with this band.
You're like. Oh shit I can't see by the way you do realize the only reason you're the drummers in this band is because you're the only one that Showed up somewhat normal Yeah, I mean never mind the fact that he looks like uncle Joey from full house Wow third third third have been a song written about him if he did yeah, that's for sure All right, so no, but we've had we've I've had in the past like you know you you're auditioning singers And they'll come out and say hey, you know Here's a list you pick you pick here's a list you pick whichever ones because you know a lot of them you cross you You you know something you hate for them to say hey we want you to learn these 20 songs Can you learn them by today? Here's the list pick what you want you know and then they'll come to an audition And I'll say I really didn't have time to work on them, and you're like well We're all here But you know you had and especially in a case like that They canceled the first time I said they had a family emergency like that's fine. Let's do it next week You know and I'm like so they came two weeks later Still didn't know the material and then they were looking like well.
I'm like well. Thanks for coming. Yeah, you know Thanks for the gumball.
Yeah, yeah, but you know it's things like that, and I think we've all experienced sure I mean you know people come in what they say and what they do are two different things And it's it's just it takes years of of Again, just playing with those type of people giving you the full circle. I think that's what we're really saying It's just like a you know you know what to expect after a while You've been there done it you kind of know your comfort zone where you want to be you get a little spoiled Especially when you're with really good musicians like you know I'm right very fortunate to be with right now, and you know you aspire to get to that It's very difficult when you know some projects break up And you aren't with a good band you're trying to put something else together or step into somebody else's You're thinking yourself like this is gonna be difficult. This is really gonna be difficult So you know it's give-and-take but being in a band is give-and-take and that's when people have to really understand That if you want to play just what you want to play you're not gonna be in a band right It's about what the culture that the band has set up and and what's your view is where are we gonna go with it? Especially if you're coming into the band that's already been established absolutely Yeah, I feel respect to that.
You just can't come in and start taking I've seen people do that They come in right away, so we're not gonna do this like well There's five people that are doing they're doing it already, and you're the six But this is our this is our band, and this is what we're going to do not to be selfish We're always looking for you know trying to add on to things But it's that culture and it gives the being that nice round feeling that you you're trying to gather so that When you're going out and playing gigs and trying to acquire shows the last thing you want to deal with is somebody who's you know? Complaining about some song and like yeah Don't really want to hear that yeah all of us play stuff that we don't want to hear and we get to play stuff that We do it's a give-and-take when you're in a band. Yeah, I think it's a good time for us to take a little break so that they can Play a song for us, and we'll figure out which person doesn't really like that song Yeah We'll see We'll be right back you're listening to the rock and roll Chicago podcast your Sunday nights Just got a whole lot bluesier Get ready for the bus stop blues show that takes you deep into the soul of the blues with classic hits road stories and live jam sessions Hosted by blues man Kevin Purcell and me the one and only road bill the bus stop blues is two hours of non-stop blues Banter and badassery check out the bus stop blues podcast at the bus stop blues calm where you can listen on Spotify I heart Apple podcasts or any other major podcast platform up on board the bus stop blues where the blues never stops rolling And we're back for the first time tonight live in the studio we got bottoms up twerking I've got I Believe that is a song written by John Hyatt performed by Kathy Matea Jody Messina Jody Messina there you go mr. History man No, I'm a I'm a John Hyatt fan, I love John Hyatt and there's so many people have done So many of his songs. I like the Hyatt Regency.
Yeah It's nice and comfortable. It really is. It really is.
There's a song. All right. I don't know who does it I I really don't know who does it.
I wish every radio station would decide not to play it any longer but it's a male country artist that Writes a song. It's a it's kind of like an answer to that song. Yes.
Yeah You've heard it before. Yes. It is a god-awful song.
It is good. I can't think of who does it? And yeah, it's it's it's every bit of the watered-down swill that is on the radio nowadays. It's just yeah terrible.
Yeah I don't say you really feel about today's music. Oh, yeah We've had that discussion many times But if you hear that if you hear the song that I'm talking about, it's it's just okay. It's it's it's making me angry We've actually had people ask us about that version and it's like no like this version is like the best Yeah, no, it's like I don't want to do.
Yeah the new one Yeah, like, you know, you know, like I was and I was of the generation and the people that when when Kid Rock did that Was all summer long. Yes song. I want a what a horrible travesty of us Taking two songs and doing that to it, right? It's terrible.
Yeah Yeah, and and I thought it was so funny how everybody associated it with Sweet Home, Alabama, but the song was werewolf in London Yeah, that's right the song was werewolf in London There was that one line in it that said Sweet Home, Alabama all summer long Yeah, and they always like all they were like, oh no, that's like a new version of Sweet Home, Alabama. No, it's not It's nowhere near Different yeah, it's totally different but but it but the song that I'm referring to is kind of along the same lines Yeah, is that yeah, they've taken that song and they've actually they actually use the course of that song You're right cuz he's talking about I saw this girl and she was singing. Yes So he's talking telling it like that.
Yeah, Jodi Messina has showed up to a lot of his shows Right and come in and done like her part of it did that part of it? Yeah, like that's her part of it kind of towards the end So it's just like yeah, nothing's better than the originals. Yeah, right. Yeah, I didn't I never got that.
So yeah Yeah, well, so you guys got a lot of gigs coming up though. I mean you guys are working which is good I like I like to see that. I mean, I think I have to block you guys because I can't see anything else on Facebook It's you Billy Gray and don't matter to me all I All I see your posts from those three bands I said, I don't see anything I mean I could have family members passing away and how do you know about it? Great places to meet chicks We all post a lot though we we like post, you know, we share the event Yeah, absolutely.
And you got six of you doing it. So yeah, but who kind of runs the whole Facebook page? Who's your who's your network administrator? Oh, that's me and Sandy actually we both kind of do it I set it all up at which standing I both post that and then all of us participate in getting Gigs and shows and stuff like that. So Wow From us doing it for such a long period of time We you know, some of us have played certain places some have and I'll say yeah, you know, I'll say yeah I got I'll make a phone call or two, you know and hook up the band and it's really a group participation I think a lot of groups have that one guy who's you know supposed to worry about, you know rehearsals gigs I think it puts a lot of pressure on them and you know, then there's a you know, then people start whispering Oh, I don't want to do you know, if you get everybody involved, I think everybody's on the same, you know There's always gonna be gigs You're happy with and gigs you may not be have with but just find it happy medium really Yeah, and what I wanted to say was that I'm we're so blessed Not only do we have the talent but all of us have we have the dedication I'm gonna get clammy now the dedication and everyone wants to do it.
We're all friends They got a cream for that by the way We're all dedicated we all love what we're doing and there's we're all friends So, I mean that's that's how that works. Yeah I think that's the best part of it is that we really all do get along really well this group In our band and we have so much fun and we laugh so much We're also very dedicated like when we say like hey We're gonna learn a couple of new songs next week They come prepared and everybody is there and they know their parts and we can get that song out that next week that weekend Coming up if it's really together So like I I don't play anything other than the tambourine and I don't even do that that well, but like I'm acoustic or electric Oh Either way rimshot. It's not good.
But yeah glockenspiel. They need a glock. We need that.
We've been looking for years for a Yeah, hurdy-gurdy. There you go. Tommy does have his what he I got a guitar I got a guitar.
Yeah guitar. So yeah, I'm gonna bring that out. I'm gonna dust that off Yeah soon.
Yeah, I think it's a requirement that he wears like tiger striped, you know stretch pants Yeah, I mean we could do we could we can even go assless chaps, too I mean, that's you know, everybody always says assless chaps. That's a redundant. All chaps are assless They're just called chaps, they're just chaps.
Yes You got you had a fan that followed you around from different bands that showed up in some of those. Yeah. Yeah.
Yeah. Yeah Oh, what was his name Clifford? I can't remember. That's called a stalker.
Yeah Yeah, no he but he would actually come when I was in a Band way back when Saints and Sinners He'd come to the shows with the chaps on and I don't know if he was trying to just the chaps. No, he had Yeah, exactly right I just puked ray, okay Did you have to tuck things back You were all thinking it Well, he met his wife at one of our shows, you know, so That was Eddie the lady. Yeah.
Yeah, unfortunately, they both passed away But um, but but yeah, they used to come to all of the Saints and Sinners shows way back in the day So I feel like an asshole As you should Anyway, it was yeah fun times, you know Not that he died. Yeah. No, no.
Yeah But that's all right fun times, but speaking of death. I'd say I lost one of my part-time jobs No Oh, no Yeah, because I was asking the customers when they come in smoking or not smoking and I guess the proper nomenclature was burial or cremation I Like that very cool Should we talk about the band thread it is so poor Jeff please we have three bands read. Yes there's a band text thread and The three people in the band are retired and the others are not so sometimes They just really get going on the tech.
I'm I'm working I'm not one of the retired ones and I'm like, how am I a hundred and four texts like? Unread right now. I know and poor Jeff. I know he works from home too.
And so does Deb but it's like Jeff half the time doesn't even get in there. He's like, it's not worth it. It's too much to live with And then I'll sometimes just say sorry Jeff because I know he's probably working harder than us.
So it's the content The content is vile and filthy It could get that way it could get the way and we make fun of people and and as usual Hello, you're talking to a guy who's in a band with nine other people. Oh, yeah Yeah, you got it, too. So when the when the texts start, yeah, I know for the next half hour Sounds like a casino All this stuff going on and everything's fine There's always one person who shall remain nameless who comes up with some type of a dad joke Yeah, and then the next half hour it's just everybody coming up with their own dad Oh, yeah, and then nobody remembers what the original text was Yeah about right and you know in like yeah, and I and I work and I come on I got a hundred and four messages that I'm here.
What don't you people work? Yeah, I know and it's like well, no three of them don't so we were still doing it even when I was working You know, and there's times where I do get in there. I have a little break. I'm like, oh my god And it just doesn't stop.
Here we go again Yeah Yeah, sometimes my husband's like anything in the band thread today, I'll be like no it's quiet It's really quiet Yeah, what's wrong? Yeah after a show though Especially a doubleheader. Yeah, pretty quiet. Everybody's on the couch just like With ibuprofen and So you guys got another song prepared for us Don't say no Yeah, I Feel lucky Believe they were not prepared.
We're not we're gonna do one. Yeah, we I mean we just talked about going and being prepared Yeah, they were with one song one song fire with one song Okay, let's do it I Don't know the name of this band is just it just lends itself to the jokes. They're gonna whip something up Let's do it.
Come on, let's go chop chop. Where's your guitar? Come on Deb put it away put it away I feel like he's So while they're getting that guitar to get what gigs you guys got coming up so So this Friday, we're at thirsty thirsty beaver. Oh, that's right.
Yeah. That was a good that was a good show. Yeah Yeah, there's a great show What's coming up? What's coming out to me guys from now? Yeah, we're playing at Jamos.
That was a good show, too Yeah, that was a good show. Let's see. What else we got Uptown and Plainfield on May 9th.
Okay, and another good show. I was at. Yeah, you were there, too.
And You were playing at Corrigan's the end of May Hollywood Casino on the 29th nice So we're playing a lot the new one in Joliet. Yeah. Yeah.
