When Jesus was praying in John chapter 17, he said that he has finished the assignment that he received from the Father. And on the cross just before he died, he said, It is finished. Now Stephen Scott in his book, The Jesus Mission, that I was reading recently says that Jesus completed twenty-seven missions while he was on the earth. The Bible tells us in Luke chapter two, then the angels said to them, Do not be afraid, for behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy, which will be to all people, for there is born to you this day in the city of David a Savior, who is Christ the Lord. A Savior is born for all of us. In Matthew chapter 1, verse 21, and she will bring forth a son, and you shall call his name Jesus, for he will save his people from their sins. A Savior that will save us from our sins. And Luke chapter 19, verse 10, for the Son of Man has come to seek and to save that which was lost. Have you ever wondered why Jesus came to the earth? What was his passion and some of those assignments that he finished just before his death and returned back to heaven? And is there still any other missions and assignments that is left that Jesus still has to fulfill, like coming at the end of time on the clouds to fetch us to be with him forever and forever? And as I was reading through the book and praying about this in my own life, I saw that the passion of Jesus Christ was love, love for his Father. At some point in John chapter 14, Jesus said, But that the world may know that I love my Father, and as the Father gave me commandments, so I do, and so arise, let us go from this place, from here. And so Jesus went from the place of prayer after having the meal with his disciples to go to the cross that the world can know how much he loved his father. But the driving passion and the purpose behind us all was to please him in all things and to bring glory to his Father. In John chapter 5, verse 30, Jesus said, I can do of myself nothing as I hear, I judge, and my judgment is righteous because I do not seek my own will, but the will of the Father who sent me. John chapter 8, verse 49, Jesus answered, I do not have a demon, but I honor my father, and you dishonor me. I do not seek my own glory. There is one who seeks and just and judges. John chapter 12, verse 28, then a voice came from heaven saying, I have both glorified it and will glorify it again. John chapter 17, verse 4, I have glorified you upon the earth. And so as I was meditating upon this book, I asked myself, what is the primary assignment and the mission that Jesus came to fulfill? And first of all is to glorify God. In John chapter 17, verses 1 through 5, to reveal God the Father to other people, Matthew chapter 11, verse 27. Also in Matthew chapter 7, Jeremiah chapter 9, we can read about that. To make the Father known in John chapter 17, verse 26, to do the will of his father in John chapter 4, verse 34, to speak the words of the Father, John chapter 8, verse 28, and so many other references as well, because the purpose of the prophecy in Revelation chapter 19, verse 10 is to return our focus and our hearts to the Lord Jesus Christ, because He is the testimony and the Spirit of prophecy, the Bible tells us. And to do the work of His Father, and to finish that in John 4, 34 and John chapter 9, verse 4. And so there's a few more other reasons and missions that Jesus came to fulfill, but his focus was to glorify his father, to please him in all things, because he loved him so much. And so the question for you and I today is what about us? Can people say the same thing about you and about us? And the way that Jesus was completing his assignments and missions and living his life is that the Father was pleased with him. His intention was to please the Father. The Father spoke three times in public. The first time was when Jesus was baptized in Matthew chapter 3, verse 17. He said, My beloved son, in whom I am well pleased. Now at the mountain of transfiguration, as he was praying in Luke chapter 9, verse 35, and a voice came from the cloud saying, This is my beloved son, hear him. In other words, listen to him when he speaks. And then in Jerusalem, in John chapter 12, where Jesus said, Father, glorify your name, then a voice came from heaven saying, I have both glorified it, then I will glorify it again. The intention of Jesus was to show the world how much he loved him, to please his father in every aspect of his life, and to glorify him. And so it becomes a question for you and for I. Jesus once said that if we see him, we have seen the Father in John chapter 14. And so can we honestly say that about ourselves? Can those around us see and experience how much we love Jesus and aim to please him in all things and to glorify him through our actions and deeds and words in everything of what we do and what we have become day by day. And so I want to encourage you in this day once again just to take a moment and to reflect upon this wonderful truth where Jesus said that I have finished the assignment that my Father has given to me. It is finished. That we can also come towards the end of our life and say, But we have glorified our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ Himself. We have pleased Him in all things because we love Him so much by doing what He has in mind for all of us. May God bless you in this week as you seek to love Him, to please Him, and to glorify Him in every aspect of your life. God bless you.
