The Nifty Fifty Show
Season 2 Trailer
I'm back after 18 months! This season is going to be different...instead of stories all over, we're going to take an armchair roadtrip along Interstate 80.
Hi. After an 18 month hiatus, I am back making episodes of the Nifty 50 Show. I've really wanted to do another set of episodes and I thought really hard about what I wanted to do. Uh, in this next set and I realized that a lot of the interesting and cool stories that I've heard about or read about come from road trips. In fact, many of the stories from the last episodes, they did come from times when I just was reading quirky things online, or I picked up a book while driving through. So with that in mind there's a lot to be said for hours spent on the road. So I've decided that it would be fun to take an armchair road trip across the country, sea to shining sea on Interstate 80 from San Francisco, California to almost New York City. We'll end in suburban New Jersey. This is one of the most traveled interstates in the country as well as the longest. So we will have plenty to talk about as we just drive along. Some of the highlights will be several state capitals. Interstate 80 passes through the most state capitals out of any interstate, I think. I think I discussed that later. We'll cross the Sierra Nevada and talk about the Donna Party and the Intermountain deserts of the West, as well as my home state, Utah. We will just blow past Wyoming because. That will be discussed later. Why? And then over the Midwest, so we'll talk about wrestling in Iowa, Notre Dame and Indiana and Toledo, Ohio's glass industry, as well as the boondocks of Northern Pennsylvania. And yes, even the lowly suburbs of New York in New Jersey. We will also take two side trips, which I've chosen because they're closest to Interstate 80 and they're not really close enough to another interstate to talk about ever, so it would be a shame to miss them. The first one is a detour to the Sapphire Lake Tahoe in California and Nevada on the border, and then we'll also swing by the boom towns surrounding Carson City. The second detour, we will head. From Interstate 80 in Nebraska into South central Nebraska to talk about Willa Khar, my favorite author, and visit the geographic center of the contiguous 48 states, which is just south, about 20 minutes from Willa C's Childhood hometown. Crossing the country can be daunting, but we are going to take our time. We're not gonna do this like a middle aged dad driving his family to Disney, which I think is the road trip standard for many people just to drive through the night and all of a sudden you've arrived. So some episodes we will cover a lot of ground and some we won't. We'll just drive lazily down the interstate, and this means that I've separated the trip into roughly. So the plan is that it's roughly a two week road trip. But before we begin, I would like to make one small correction from the hurricane party episode of last season. This came about actually because I did recently take a small road trip along the Gulf Coast from New Orleans to Alabama through Mississippi, which if you'll recall, the Hurricane Party episode Rich Lu Manor Apartments are located in the city that I called past Christian. It's really past Christian. My apologies, and if you even want to be more local, it's the pass I know. I'll discover more things that I've said wrong. As this goes on, so please bear with me and I am sorry, I I do try. To look things up as well as I can, but some of this local knowledge is extremely difficult to find. With that in mind, pick up your favorite road trip snacks. Grab your ran McNally Atlas and get ready to cross the United States of America. Starting next week, we will journey from the capital of fog and sourdough the city by the Bay of San Francisco up to Sacramento and start our journey eastwards. See you real soon.
