According to my guests, two young UC Riverside sophomores, the algorithm fooled me. I asked these two young women, Symil Austin and Dinella Godage, to chat with me about what I am seeing all over IG and Tik Tok, “The Soft Life” and “Tradwives”. For those of you who are not familiar with these lifestyles, both are being promoted by Gen Z and Millennial Men and Women. Symil, Dinella and I primarily talked about Tradwives, who are young women who are choosing, regardless of education, to live a more traditional lifestyle. Their husbands are the bread-winners and leaders of the home. The IG and Tik Tok Tradwives stay at home to pamper their husbands, frolic in the garden, while wearing floral print, boob accentuating, ultra-feminine outfits, making croissants and homemade bubble gum, all with a full face of make-up (See Norah Smith and Estee Williams on Tik Tok) . I went into the conversation, being very judgmental about this lifestyle and concerned about these women giving up so much of what women before them have fought for, including career opportunities and autonomy. While my guests, personally do not subscribe to this, they emphasized how much Gen Z promotes life-style “choice” and how much they speak in superlatives that they don’t necessarily mean. They made me see the importance of everyone choosing the lifestyle that makes them happy and told me not to worry. Some of these posts are just Gen Z getting a rise out of old folks.
