Better Value Health

Episode 4: What's the Main Reason Driving Healthcare Costs? Dr. Ge Bai of Johns Hopkins

Setu Vora MD Season 2024 Episode 4

In this episode, I speak with Dr. Ge Bai on what drives healthcare costs in the US.
She had some surprising insights to share.
Ge Bai, PhD, CPA is a Professor of Accounting at Johns Hopkins Carey Business School and Professor of Health Policy & Management at Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health.
An expert on health care accounting, finance, and policy, Dr. Bai has testified before House Ways and Means Committee, written for the Wall Street Journal and the Washington Post, and published her studies in leading academic journals such as the New England Journal of Medicine, JAMA, and Health Affairs.

United States is going to spend over 6.8 Trillion dollars a year on healthcare by 2030. Almost 90% of employers think the cost of providing health benefits would be unsustainable in the next five to 10 years. Meanwhile, Americans have the highest maternal and infant mortality, the lowest life expectancy at birth, and the highest death rates for avoidable or treatable conditions among high-income countries.
