No, but you gave all of this to me once upon a time. He stole it from you. Yeah. I have a life update for us. I couldn't talk about life updates last week, but we can now. For one season and one season only, I have been officially hired to replace one Spencer Wickens, one beloved Spencer Wickens for the remainder of the NCAA men's collegiate volleyball season at Stanford. So I'm uh I'm a full-time employee now. When I was with Daniel at Stanford for nine years before, I was the volunteer, just the lowly, lowly volunteer. I was a slave to whatever Daniel, whatever Daniel asked for. Um and now I'm filling in. So uh yeah, that was the uh that's the genesis of what I've got going on. And and you'll uh you'll hear some my my opinions will be less spicy as I am very biased as to who I want to win and succeed, and I want everyone else to fail.

Balancing Bias, Content, And Team Trust

Uh content will change a little bit. I I'm focusing specifically on coaching, but I want to keep sharing stories. I think that's one of my favorite things to do. Um still want to do some breakdowns, still want to give love to the men's volleyball world. Um again, you'll know I'm very biased on on the things that I do come forward with, but uh yeah, I I think a lot of what I'm trying to focus on is this was a cool opportunity. Uh John was kind enough to reach out to me when spent when he got news that Spencer was gonna be leaving for Minnesota for the women's job, which is a great opportunity for him, and we love you, Spencer. Um he doesn't listen. I know, but someone does and someone will send it to him. So if that's you and you know Spencer, send him that little clip. Uh yeah, it was just a it's such a unique opportunity to step in to a full-time role and jump in and coach at a highest level team. I literally was driving to practice today, and I had the feeling I was like, I got to to to run some drills during practice yesterday, and it felt I love my 15 team, I love getting to coach at Beta Bay and do skills practices and work with all the little kids. But there's this degree where you're like, I feel like I'm driving a Ferrari when I go to practice. We're like, wow, these guys are they can they can institute exactly what I'm looking for right away, and they can see a lot of the things that we're trying to do, and they can physically go up and do these things at a level that you know we're just not not traditionally getting. So it's it's very fun in that sense. And my wife over here has been very kind and very supportive. Uh my wife, my wife Chad Gordon, um co-host and wife.

Uh yeah, it gave me gave me a lot of sport and freedom to be able to go do it. Our kids are at a young age where they're gonna come to games with us and do a lot of stuff still, uh, where I'm gonna miss some time with them after schools for practices, but get an opportunity to bring them along and and be in these moments. Uh, I had a I had a the the final closing thought for me on this uh was I had this like childhood dream of being a college coach. My grandpa was a college coach at Santa Clara for basketball, and then he was the athletic director there, and we grew up in the gym being around it, and it was just so cool. He was like the mayor, and everyone knew him, respected him, and he is and was a fantastic coach. Um, and so I always saw him in that moment and how cool it was for my family for him to be there and to be a part of it. Uh, and I knew pretty quickly that I don't want to be a full-time college coach after doing volunteer for one year. I love the job that I get to do, but to be in this environment where I get to step in for a three-month period and be to be hopefully useful and helpful to this team in a moment where they need it, and then gives John and the staff the flexibility to go and hire someone full-time afterwards. It's a it's a unique environment that I felt like I could I could do some good and help. And for me, it's uh there's a selfish desire to want to go do this and and have this opportunity and be a part of it. Um, and hopefully there's a degree as well where the team can feel a lot of the support that I'm I'm trying to give them and the love I'm trying to give them because they deserve it. Um that's the sentiment I shared with them on Monday when I got to talk to the team. Um and hopefully they'll they'll learn to feel that continuously, um, even if I do a fifth-set breakdown of a different team at some point too.

Yeah. Uh I actually I asked him, I was like, what do you I I asked him about? Like, are you worried about my social media? Like, would you like me to stop posting? He was like, I'm not concerned about like that that does not concern me. Doesn't concern me until it becomes a concern to me. No. Um no, he was like, he's like, I trust, I trust you to do that.

Family Legacy And A Three-Month Window

But you do know you represent something that is not just yourself with stuff too. So there is a little bit of a like a different tinge to what you are gonna be doing for the next couple months, but still, yeah.

And I mean, to be fully transparent, like my my priority with it is I want this team to know that I'm there for them. Yeah, and so I'm I don't want to put them in a situation where they feel like I'm I'm not there for them or I'm not fully invested in their success versus anyone else's success. Um, and I think I can I'll prove that to them day in and day out. But uh yeah, transparency-wise, I'm I'll be a little bit more reserved in some of the things because also time-wise, man oh man, like this takes up a lot of time to try and make this make these programs run uh so that they fire on all cylinders.

Uh when you called me and you were filling me in on kind of the going-ons about this happening, my crazy brain thought uh conspiracy theory and cue the cue the conspiracy theory theme music. Yeah, please. Someone someone can't someone someone make that happen for us. Yeah. I when I was thinking about leaving Stanford, you were very supportive, and I was talking starting my own business and seeing if I could get this support of Beta Bay, and you were just like, Yeah, whatever you do, you're gonna kill it, and like kind of helping me make that decision and giving me the support. But it seems like there's some full circle here of you're trying to get me out.

Yes. The there's a there was supposed to be math is math, in there was supposed to be an NIL tournament hosted at the Honda Center where they're hosting the 28th century. In Anaheim. In Anaheim. Yes. Um, so it was gonna be it was gonna be at the Olympic venue getting ready for men's volleyball. It was gonna be the quote top four programs.

When was this supposed to be? April, March?

Um what? No, no, it was February. Yeah. Oh, geez. And so it was supposed to be Hawaii, USC, UCLA, and Long Beach. And they were gonna play a mini, mini four, four-team tournament. Winners would face off. So you you know, the big west and NPSF schools would play each other, the winners would then face each other, the losers would face each other. Yeah, and there was gonna be a big NIL prize. You know, there's there was some hype around it. Um, and it turns out we might need to get Daniel Daniel's conspiracy theory over here, but my conspiracy theory is we've got we got a little bit of a fire fest of volleyball type of situation going on.

I haven't heard anything for real yet, other than it got canceled. It was a USA volleyball event. Uh I didn't even realize that they were in the eye. I didn't realize that either.

Uh it was part of the UH like announcement. They were like, hey, like, we're sorry that they to announce that this has been cancelled. We were informed by USA volleyball and the other like organizers. Go for it, yeah.

Supposedly, like the page on the USA volleyball site went missing this morning.

And yeah, there was there's a couple posts about it. Like it was it got removed from the USC schedule and then it got put back up, and then I mean, so few people even knew about this event.

Like, nothing was marketed unless you were like a diehard, you know, following one of your one of these teams, right?

Like, I mean, I think it was in the story. So there was, I mean, there was kind of some some inklings of like, is this thing actually happening for for a little while, right? Like, people were like, it's it's everything says TBD, TB announced, like we haven't really heard anything. Yeah, and it just seemed like an idea that didn't like someone did not have the legs to get it to get it off the ground. But I did not realize it was a USAV thing, which of course Conspiracy. We don't that does not blow back nicely on uh on our governing body in that sense. Like Hawaii was pretty quick to throw USAV as it looks like that's the Hawaii graphic. Yeah, that Hawaii graphic makes it seem like USAV has canceled.

The volleyball foot. Billy McFarland's back at it. Billy McFarlane. But he's going after small Olympic sports instead of large music festivals. Um I saw that we had, I believe it was UCLA Long Beach added to their schedule that weekend. They're playing each other, I believe, at UCLA.

Um, so they called each other and they're like, okay, so this is canceled, so where it can go to your place or mine.

But interesting interestingly, nothing from USC, nothing from Hawaii, and Hawaii's press release, they say we're we're looking for other solutions. But I would you would think that that would be the immediate reason.

Well, there was obviously an alliance made between two of them, and they left the other two out. Do you want to form 100%? Yeah, the alliance. There was an alliance form. McRae and Hawks stubbed on the phone with each other and they were like, hey, you guys want to put your hands in the middle? And then the other two were like, Lord of the Rings. Yeah, that's probably what happened.

I think that's I think that's what we when we went off on it last year. The main thing is A number one, there's no transparency as to who's voting to what. So we made it very clear when we were voting, this is what we're voting, and B number two, I agree with Daniel. It's more like potential rather than like here's where it currently stands. You lose, yeah, your ranking changes. That's that's the way and like big swings.

We have a we have a couple big matchups here within this dynamic. Number one, you've got John Costi versus his son Cameron Costi. Big time. Cute. Cute. My first order of business when I got uh hired on Monday. I took Blue Painter's tape, and John's got a big picture of Cameron in his beta Bay jersey in his office, and I put a big X over Cameron's face and wrote not this week, and I sent Cameron a picture of it. Um that was my first order of business. But actually, most in the first order. That was the literal my first action besides saying hello. You're gonna do that to my newcomer of the year. Yeah. All right. Besides that saying hello, but the the real most important matchup we've got here is we've got some we've got some Chad Gordon quarterback lineage about to go down. Chad, can you can you tell the tell the viewers this little backstory here?

Yeah, my my first summer coming back from Illinois. Uh I wanted to assist some older team. I was like, no, here's the 12-2s. Go be the head coach. Um and so Cameron Cossi is on this team, Theron Briette is on this team, Rowan David Alviar, Princeton's Libera is on this team, who's like eight. That's a different story. Um best player on the team. Not even close.

No, Rowan. Like, not even close. Yeah, yeah. He walked he walked this different aside.

He walked in 20 minutes late. He's like, I'm so sorry, I'm so sorry. I'm like, Rowan, you're eight. Like your parents drove you, like it's all good. We're like in butterfly. He like step closes and yassis the ball. I'm like, Rowan, you can show up whenever the hell you want. This is the best player I've ever seen in your four years too young. You're a whole college degree, too young for this team. Um yeah, no, quarterback controversy on that team for sure. Um, I guess you'd call it a 6'6, and you know, T and Cameron and Rowan at that time were like Rowan was small, but like really good. But T and Cameron were like two of the bigger kids, and so like that you put them in the middle and you just yeah. Chuck. You let them, yeah, dude. Cameron, Cameron was slinging it on the 12th.

Uh T was yachtsing a lot of two balls. Nice. Um but yeah, no, we got a good uh good Stanford uh Irvine matchup coming up here uh pretty quick. And uh I'm interested to see how it plays out.

Battle of the twos. Uh the other dynamic that I I just have to get your your sense and your vibe on is like, are you gonna are you gonna drift either direction? Are you just rooting for a good side? Are you do you have anything that do you root do you root? Stanford Irvine? Yeah, do you root a certain way?

Aftermath: Schedule Scramble And Speculation

Chad Gordon 19:50

Yeah, Stanford. So live in the Bay Area and we got more of those kids. Yeah, it's true. Santa Santa Barbara was interesting though. Yeah, that was kind of Santa Barbara that was a lot. Drama modern. Yeah, right. So like I'm talking with like I'm talking with John Wallace, and I'm like, oh man, I'm like kind of in the middle. Like he's obviously like with his scout sho folks. Sure. I'm just like, man, I'm just kind of hoping for good volleyball.

Prayers weren't 100% answered both nights, but that's all right. One night. One night. One night was good. One night was one night was less good. But yeah, no, you like you like to support the chose when they come to town. Obviously, those teams haven't played in a couple of years, I think, up here. It's been a little bit. Went down to Santa Barbara two years ago. Yeah. So no, it was just it was it was cool to see all those guys. And obviously, like there's like two dozen Beta Bay kids between those teams. So it's it's literally 11.

Matt Houlihan 20:38

And then you had Marty. Marty was on the bench. Uh, and then we had shout out. Andrew Weisner was the line judge. Wheezy. Wheezy's. And I believe Wheezy can correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe that was his first Division I men's volleyball match. Oh, wow. So that was a big moment for him. I got a video. I need to actually send it to him. He was he was uh he was on the line. He did get uh he did get overruled Stanford Challenge, one of his calls, and it was actually out, so he got overruled on one, but for the most part, Wheeze was on it. So we had 13 Beta Bay people out on that. That's a lot of kids on the floor. It was pretty it was pretty cool. That was a pretty cool.

And honestly, the rest of the people there were Balboa.

Yeah, and there was a ton of Balboa too.

There was like there was, I want to say like 10 Balboa kids that were playing as well.

Yeah, so it was crazy. It was just funny to see those, all those. I mean, a close-knit group, and and literally one of my favorite moments watching from this from the stands for that match was Moses versus Ben. It was so funny. Yeah, I think the downrest literally thought they were chirping at each other and they like told them to stop, and they're like, no, no, we're actually just friends. We're cool, it's all good. Yeah, like we like each other and we're good. So there was some some really funny. Yeah, so it was that was a a pretty cool dynamic to watch play out.
