Around the Bases 2.21: Wrigley Walk-Offs and Who Gets Evicted: A Sports and Pop Culture Roundup
Charlie and Tim reunite virtually after their memorable Chicago trip, still buzzing from witnessing Justin Turner's walk-off homer at Wrigley Field. The moment marked Turner's first regular-season walk-off in his 17-year career – proving once again that magic happens when Tim visits Wrigley, now sporting a perfect 2-0 record with Cubs walk-offs.
The baseball discussion dives deep into playoff positioning for both the Mets and Cubs. Despite recent struggles, both hosts maintain cautious optimism about their teams' wild card chances while acknowledging the division-leading Brewers' seemingly unstoppable momentum. The conversation takes an interesting turn as they explore a peculiar friendship dynamic – each rooting for the other's team when they're not facing each other, a rarity in sports fandom. They analyze how Andrew Vaughn transformed from a negative WAR player with the White Sox into a powerhouse for Milwaukee, highlighting the Brewers' uncanny ability to maximize talent other teams have given up on.
Beyond baseball, Charlie shares stories from the National Sports Collectors Convention, including a surprisingly warm interaction with Sammy Sosa and securing valuable autographs from current Cubs players. Their conversation about collectibles reveals how memorabilia connects to deeper emotional experiences, with Charlie looking forward to sharing these traditions with his son Dylan someday. The hosts also dissect the current Big Brother season with tactical precision, questioning why HOH winners repeatedly make strategic blunders and challenging the show's controversial rule allowing an HOH win to be stolen without providing immunity to the original winner.
From their detailed breakdown of the Destination X finale to previews of upcoming entertainment including Wednesday's second season, Survivor 49, and the new Fantastic Four movie, Charlie and Tim demonstrate why Around the Bases has become essential listening for fans of both sports and pop culture. Their authentic friendship and engaging banter create a listening experience that feels like joining old friends for a conversation where everyone's invited.

Welcome to Around the Bases, the podculture and sports podcast, with your host, charlie Seymour, and I'm Tim Sternberg. Hit it, nick. All right, we're back here we are. We're not in person anymore, buddy, but I had an awesome time with Erica traveling to Chicago to see the wonderful Dylan. You and Rosie are great too, but we met the wonderful Dylan.
Speaker 2:We can be second and third Phil to Dylan, that's okay, what?
Speaker 1:what a special time, bro. Uh, so good to see your little guy meet your little guy and uh go to a cubs game and watch arguably one of the best games of the year, in my opinion.
Speaker 2:Maybe that was a lot of fun, a lot of it's always nice when you get to see a walk-off homer bottom nine.
Speaker 1:We saw a walk-off homer bottom nine by the great former Met Justin Turner, who hit that home run first at bat First, like he just got up to the plate and went.
Speaker 2:First pitch yeah, First pitch who in his 17-year career, that was his first regular season career walk-off homer, if you can believe that.
Speaker 1:Around the Basin is bringing you history right here on this podcast. I would be remiss real quick, buddy, if I didn't mention too that our great pal Nicholas Pepin from Pop Culture Roulette came out to see us and drove all the way from wisconsin an hour and a half to go to the cub game with us. Nicholas pepin, thank you on behalf of both charlie and I for hanging out with us. You see this great picture here that we took, uh, at wrigley field after the cubs had that victorious victory. Um. But yeah, charlie and I both appreciate it so much, buddy, and it was so great to see you.
Speaker 2:That marks almost to the day Not quite the day, but the time you and you and Erica came the year before the Cubs also walked off the Cardinals bottom nine. It wasn't a homer, it was a walk-off base hit. But just for those keeping score, Tim is 2-0 at Wrigley with two Cubs walk-off base hit. But just for those keeping score, Tim is 2-0 at Wrigley with two Cub walk-offs. So we might need to ship him in if we are lucky enough to get a game in October.
Speaker 1:I'm ready, willing and able, bring me in. No problem, Cubbies, I got you, as long as we're not playing the Mets. You know the deal, but I will root for them.
Speaker 2:Still repping the Mets, I love it. Yeah, yeah, that's growth. I love it.
Speaker 1:Dude, I mean, they're my team and you know what. We had an amazing start of the year and we're in a really crappy, crappy, crappy, crappy losing streak. But, as Steve Cohen said eloquently today, he still has faith, and I still have faith in the team.
Speaker 2:And let's be honest right now I don't know if the 1927 Yankees can beat the Brewers, because they cannot lose.
Speaker 1:Yeah, but the problem is, charlie, for both of us, my friend, is that one of us needs to beat them against the World Series, for sure.
Speaker 2:I know, I know, and right now they're looking like world beaters.
Speaker 1:Dude, I can't see the. I cannot see the Brewers in the World Series, bro. I just I can't.
Speaker 2:Let's hope history repeats itself. They've had some early October exits recently. Yeah, you know every year is different. They are very good and we have records. You can go back early in this season, Even when the Brewers were in third. I've been telling people I was more afraid of them than the Cardinals and I think that's been very proven right.
Speaker 1:Yeah, I recall you saying that a number of times and I understand. I mean, I don't know what they're doing.
Speaker 2:I recall you saying that a number of times and I understand it's just there. I mean they, they, they. I don't know what they're doing, but just like. Here's a perfect example. Okay, the poor white Sox have this player named Andrew Vaughn, number three pick in the draft.
Speaker 1:I know.
Speaker 2:For five seasons. He's basically a negative war player. Then they brewers, have a pitcher who says you know what? I want to start? I don't want to be a part of this team, even if you guys are good, I just want to be a starting pitcher. My spot's gone. So they say, all right, well, we'll trade you. Then, oh well, the white socks have this really, really former top prospect who's available, who we're getting for one cent on the dollar. And then, what do you know?
Speaker 1:a little little change of scenery and Andrew Vaughn is now basically Shohei Otani at the plate which I'm very happy about, not for the brewers, but the fact that I have a rookie card of his that I never sold. That's numbered to 25 and it's autographed.
Speaker 2:So find a brewer fan right now who wants that, while you still can, Reese Hoskins could be back in a week. Someone's going to have to sit. I mean Vaughn's too hot to sit, but between Hoskins and Churio coming back it'll actually be interesting. Who is he going to sit right now? Because all these fill-in guys have been great.
Speaker 1:You know how I feel about Reese Hoskins. I do know how you feel about Reese Hoskins. Don't like Reese Hoskins, former Philly yeah, you know just his attitude. I just done that. But yeah, it should be interesting to see what happens with Vaughn. I mean, what depth though, to have that kind of guy as your backup all of a sudden, because your pitcher didn't want to stay with the team, not to mention one of the outfielders who's been playing great is going to have to start sitting.
Speaker 2:So mentioned, one of the outfielders who's been playing great is going to have to start sitting. So you have the the not to bring up a specific game against the Mets, but the game I think it was the middle game of the series where the Mets seemingly tied it in the ninth and Perkins made an unbelievably perfect throw to get him by a split second. So between Perkins, yelich and Collins, who could be the NL rookie of the year, that's three off-fielders right there. You got Churrio back. Who are you going to sit there? So, like they've got some interesting some we'll call them first-world problems coming up.
Speaker 1:Aye, aye, aye, all right. Well, the Mets and the Cubs in the home stretch, we still got the wild card. I don't want to see the Mets and the Cubs face each other in the wild card.
Speaker 2:One of us has to win a division, I don't know or one of us has to finish four. Basically they'd have to finish four and six to not play the first round, which is exactly how it would be right now if it ended. Today, the Mets would be playing Division III winner, which is is it the Phillies right now, or was it the Dodgers? They're neck and neck. They keep trading spots. So I mean, you probably don't want so many teams around me. I can't stand.
Speaker 1:So many. At least the Braves are out of it.
Speaker 2:Right. So the interesting thing is, the Padres have been playing some good ball lately too. They're only two behind the Dodgers. Now what if the Dodgers end up in the wild card? If the wild card ends up being the Cubs, dodgers and Mets, can you imagine that would be wild. Let's go the Dodgers, and then in that scenario, we'd be hoping that the Dodgers were five. So then we don't play each other again the Dodgers were five.
Speaker 1:So then we don't play each other again. I'm gonna say this right now right now, I'll say this if either the Mets, or, hopefully, if either the Mets or the Cubs get to the NLCS, I will root for either one of them, as long as they're not playing each other, without a doubt oh, absolutely.
Speaker 2:I think I'm rooting for the Cubs and the Mets, regardless of what round, as long as they're not playing each other.
Speaker 1:We have to put that little. Obviously, obviously you're not going to root for the.
Speaker 2:Cubs against the Mets and I'm not going to root for the Mets against the Cubs.
Speaker 1:We can be real about that.
Speaker 2:Aside from that, yeah, yeah, right now, if, if the season were to end this second, the Mets would be playing in la in the wild card and the club would be hosting the padres in chicago.
Speaker 1:But that there's still 40 games, 40 something games left, so a lot can change yeah, we're today is august 12th, yeah, as we record this episode, so probably august 13th when it comes out. Yeah, I mean, I mean it's early in the season. I mean early midseason. I should say Not early in the season, early midseason. We're a month away out from the All-Star game. We are getting into the stretch of time where stuff has to start happening Mets, hello, hello, mcfly. But yeah, hopefully, hopefully they do something. I don't know.
Speaker 2:Yeah, I still. I still do have confidence in them. I think they still are, I think I mean I don't want to jinx anything, but I have a feeling that the current six will be the six that get in. Okay, here's an interesting. See, be the six that get in. Okay, here's an interesting. So here's an interesting spot for you.
Speaker 2:So yesterday was an example. Mets were off, cubs were off, okay, so you had some scoreboard watching to do. Now the Phillies, who are the current east leaders, who obviously you don't like, but with the recent stretch of them playing well in the Mets struggling a that leads up to five. It was five and a half going on six. Now, granted, you don't want to say I don't want to go for the division, but at the same time you know better than anybody. I mean, all you have to do is get into the playoffs and then anything can happen. So you obviously would rather take a wild card than nothing.
Speaker 2:So game was a perfect example. Sure, the Phillies won, mets lost half a game, but they beat the Reds, who are the first team on the outside looking in, who both the Cubs and Mets want to keep losing to guarantee a playoff spot. So when you have things like that, like here's another you got today and tomorrow two more games. Do you want the Phillies to lose both games? And then pressures on the Mets to keep it?
Speaker 2:Honestly, at this point, as they I'm in the Cubs are in a similar spot, with the Brewers playing like a crazy good, it's going to be very difficult to catch Milwaukee. The Cubs play five times against Milwaukee next week at Wrigley. Unless they swept all five, even four out of five, you're only gaining three games. You're still going to be three, three and a half back. It'll be tough. So I think, as a cub fan and as a met fan, we might be rooting for the phillies the next two days to give the reds two more losses and keep fortifying our chances to get in, which, at this point, is the goal, I think you're not wrong.
Speaker 1:I mean arguably too. Thinking about it, historically speaking, the buy isn't always necessarily the best thing to have in the playoffs. As we see, the rest kind of does some funky things to the team. Case in point last last playoffs with the Mets. And you know, I mean I have I have mixed feelings about it. I think as a team you need to do something to kind of fight that by like maybe not have the rest but maybe do like practice games or whatnot. But I don't know. You're right, though, to your point, I'd rather be in a wild card than not be in at all, obviously.
Speaker 2:So you know there's a lot of baseball left to play and just looking ahead, the Mets still have seven games left with the Phillies. So theoretically, if the Phillies help the cause and beat the Reds a couple of times, the Mets could still like the Cubs. Because only a five, let's say, the Mets go six and one in those seven, all of a sudden they're right back in the division race. So you know you. You don't want to say oh yeah, they're going to do that. Obviously, both teams are very good and you can go three, four, four, three. But at this point I think getting in is number one most important, especially with how some of these teams are playing and how our teams are playing right now. Every team goes through these stretches, but it magnifies when all of a sudden you see a couple other.
Speaker 2:Their teams kind of creep in and you've had a few years where teams like Arizona, who was way out of it and then all of a sudden got really hot, got a wild card, went all the way to the World Series. So, like you, just got to be hot at the right time. And I think a silver lining for both Mets fans and Cub fans is we're not playing our best ball, sure, but you'd rather that right now than September leading into October. So you know, maybe the tides will turn, maybe somehow the Mets and Cubs will start playing better again and teams like the Brewers might actually lose a game, one single game maybe well to.
Speaker 1:I mean, the Phillies can be very streaky. The Phillies are known to lose a bunch of games in a row, so anything can happen between now and the end of September. So yeah, that's kind of the way I look at it.
Speaker 2:Yeah, it should honestly be a pretty fun month and a half of baseball. There's like pretty much only seven teams total that are totally out of it, like just even looking at the wild card standings like you? What about the? Rocky you mentioned the braves. Yeah, they're, they're obviously out rockies are out. White socks are out, like those obvious teams are out.
Speaker 1:But the marlins, I mean the marlins out. I think the marlins Are the Marlins out. I think the Marlins Are the Marlins out. No, actually.
Speaker 2:I don't know If we would have recorded this before the weekend. We would probably say they're right in it. Now. They kind of slipped a little bit and lost a few more in a row but they're six back.
Speaker 1:Can I clarify that though? They slipped a little bit because they're actually playing decent teams.
Speaker 2:Yeah, yeah. They just lose three in a row, but right before that day they were right in the hunt there.
Speaker 1:I don't know, fingers crossed.
Speaker 2:The team that swept them was the Braves.
Speaker 1:They're not decent this year. Yeah, this trip, by the way, not the only thing we did was go to Wrigley. You went to the National for the First time in a long time.
Speaker 2:I'll say I say the first time Of the actual National, because I believe the other ones I went to were the Chicago Sport ones, so not quite the same. But yeah, I gotta say I was Blown away, wasn't that something? It was wild, I mean.
Speaker 1:Lots of human beings at one place.
Speaker 2:The first day getting in there were so many people waiting in line I thought I didn't know what was going on.
Speaker 1:So, charlie, folks, charlie picked Erica and I up at our hotel and we're driving in. He goes. What's with the traffic? I can't believe the traffic and that's the whole time, because it's crazy around Rosemont where it was held, and I, for the first time ever, never saw that line outside, like you just mentioned. I could not believe it. And the second day we went when we weren't with you and we got dropped off by an uber. We had to go outside and apparently the the trick is to go to the parking lot and go through the inside walkway.
Speaker 1:Yeah, yeah, um, but unbelievable. You were having a ball getting autographs of cubs players because the cubs had an off day that day.
Speaker 2:Uh, you want to mention a couple of the ones I mean the one, the most important one for nostalgia purposes, was sammy I mean that was cool. Sammy sosa was incredibly nice and you got a selfie, which I politely asked, knowing you know probably not, and the security or whoever was working at the convention said no, no photos, and Sammy laughed at him and gave me the wave and brought me around the table, so that felt pretty good.
Speaker 1:I love Sammy so much. Man. That's awesome. You got PCA right, or did you not? I actually had a running at PCA.
Speaker 2:Yeah, I already had PCA. Actually, I got him at the same time as Matt Mervis before last year's Cubs convention. They did obvious shirts, had a little meet and greet with them, miami Marlins had a little meet and greet with them and that was before people really knew yeah exactly so I had met him.
Speaker 2:Um, the ones who were there at the convention that day that I went to were uh, cubs rookie matt shaw, who is carrying the offense right now the only one hitting right now, really and then there was also uh, nico kyle tucker and uh, who is the other, and michael bush so talk tucker was obviously the biggest one.
Speaker 1:You got that day for sure. Current player. Yeah, definitely which is important because we want tucker to re-sign with the cubs.
Speaker 2:but just in case you have an autograph with him on a cubs, I may I may have have said some encouraging words about him wanting to stay, and then I also may have told all of the other Cubs to tell Kyle Tucker to stay, and Nico had the best response of all of them. Nico said I think Chicago is a pretty good sell of itself, don't you think?
Speaker 1:I think he, I think that means he's enjoying his time.
Speaker 2:Obviously, a lot can happen, and Cubs have never really gone to that length, but we'll see. We'll see.
Speaker 1:Yeah, so to cap off that awesome day because the day was already awesome the day before I had texted you and I said we need to enter this Tops thing for a Q&A- and without hesitation, because you know me Right, you quickly entered it.
Speaker 2:I mean, if tim is sending me something to sign up for, I'm doing it. And this is the king of sweepstakes and raffles over here so here is the dude like.
Speaker 1:So the dude's online getting autographs and he texts me because we're at another part of the convention, because I didn't get an email. I guess we're not doing it. I guess, I guess, I guess so and literally like two minutes later I get an email go through. I call him Joey, check your email and all three of us got invited to this Pops Q&A happening. Like a half hour later you got your autograph. We rushed over there, lined up, had an amazing interaction.
Speaker 1:I always love these because you get really good information and we get a gift at the end erica wins a box of uh erica won a raffle within a raffle yes within the family and at the end we all get an autographed uh roki sasaki dodgers rookie autograph card to 50 number to 50 national unbelievable I would show you mine, but I already. But um, just it was, it was awesome, it was just fun time it was.
Speaker 2:It was very cool and, and uh, bearing the lead. Basically the three people who ran the q a were basically three of the top people at tops you're the head of distribution, the head of design and I forget the third one, but literally all three of them were had big honchos there I think this experience got you uh back interested in it a little bit, because you went ahead and bought some cards off of the website and you're actually expecting the the one of the ones that you like tops chrome sometime today so yeah, it's it's?
Speaker 2:it brings you back like the nostalgia for sure, and uh, oh, yeah. And then randomly the other day I just was like I was running at target. They had some there so I picked some up and in the one little box I picked up I had a number to 50 sandy kofax.
Speaker 1:So that was beautiful card yeah, I, I mentioned, you know you just mentioned nostalgia. I just recently like within right before the national started going through my comic books. I have an extensive comic book collection and I started submitting them for grading and I actually did a video today on amazing spider-man 252 and if you're not familiar with that issue, it's the one where spider-man gets his black costume from secret wars. It's the first time in the series that it shows it. And you know, superheroes helped me get out of a funk as far as being bullied in school and whatnot, and there's something about collectibles in general that I'm sure you'll agree with that. Just bring that smile to your face and bring that nostalgia back and just make you happy for times that have passed, but times that are current too, and I can't wait until you start. You know ripping cards with Dylan or you know collecting baubles with Dylan, and that's the fun part yeah, looking forward to it honestly yeah, definitely, and going, of course, going to Wrigley into many, many pub, many pub games.
Speaker 2:It'll be nice because you know whatever he wants to do is fine. But if he is interested in that, can start going early again for autographs, like actually like I used to when I was a kid.
Speaker 1:With you. As a dad, I have a feeling he's going to want to do that.
Speaker 2:We'll see, we'll see. We'll see what he wants to do.
Speaker 1:I love that. I love that you're saying that absolutely whatever he wants to do. Um, so we do talk other things other than baseball and national and all this stuff. And, uh, there's some reality tv going on. There is a little show called big brother happening currently. Um, well, uh, I I think we're in the minority, charlie in happy to see jimmy gone, apparently because a lot of people love jimmy and, I guess, because he was the chaos causer, and interesting.
Speaker 2:I guess it's the circles you keep. But yeah, I would feel like most of the people that I know and talk to about big brother are also pretty happy that he's gone uh, yeah, most, I mean I I'd rather keep to your circle because I agree with you.
Speaker 1:Um, you know I they like the chaos causing aspects of him. I guess some people called him a king, oh, okay, uh, if bullying is king, I guess. Um, he literally targeted Keanu week one, told him to sit down, basically made a lot of this country. Team Keanu If you saw their brother on lock the other night with Jerry O'Connell wearing a team Keanu shirt there's a reason for that Because he was being ostracized most famously in the last week's episode by the current head of household, ava, who is hosting the veto competition, and he says I believe you have a prompt.
Speaker 2:What do you mean? Let's hold on, let's preface that with. He said that after he won the veto and not a single person said a word to congratulate him.
Speaker 1:That was not I would I?
Speaker 2:honestly I went full 180 and I was already getting there, but I'm totally rooting for kiana whenever everyone's gaining on one person. I'm starting to root for that person same.
Speaker 1:I mean, I'm not dude. I usually I will tell you straight up when, when I watch reality TV, I'm usually rooting for the nerdy kind of guy because that's who I am. So I am like rooting for that team that you know quiet guy, I like rooting for that guy.
Speaker 2:Do they have one of those on this season? No, I feel like yeah, right, this is one of the one times that they don't.
Speaker 1:Yeah know, I feel like, yeah right, this is one of the one times that they yeah, so normally a player like uh, a player like kianu, I'm like totally like get him out, get him out, get him out, get him out, get the strong guy out no dude.
Speaker 2:Early in the season we were like that. We were pro, but whenever they all started ganging up on him, no, and I'm the same way with kelly now too, me too.
Speaker 1:Yes, I love kelly like I.
Speaker 2:Just here's the. Here's my big thing. I know I've mentioned this to you before, but I don't understand all of these people who, when they become hoh, they keep shooting themselves in the foot for no reason. You don't you don't have to make promises and you can't make promises to everyone. So, instead of saying, oh, don't worry, you're not going on the block, how about something like you know, I really don't want to put you on the block, I can't make any promises, but I don't want to do that. It's that easy. It's that easy.
Speaker 1:It's a non-clarifying statement. You don't have to. You don't have to put your whole game out there and after that week you're not going to be at a household anymore, at least in the next week. What are you doing, right? What are you doing? You got it. You can't. I mean, I don't know. Especially this season, the burning of bridges is unbelievable and as much as I don't like what's his name, jimmy, as much as I didn't like Jimmy, mickey made a bad move, bro. I'm sorry. He was a number for her. She should not have gotten rid of him. She went from being someone who I thought could possibly win this game, like was playing a great game socially, to totally tanking her game, man.
Speaker 1:That wasn't the move.
Speaker 2:I would say that was one of the worst HOHs ever, but it wasn't Jimmy's.
Speaker 1:But it wasn't her HOH. Really, If you think about it, she really kind of wanted to do the power that's another thing I wanted to talk about.
Speaker 2:I didn't like that, by the way. There needs to be something where, regardless of her being able to steal the HOH, fine, but Riley, who won that HOH, should not be eligible to go on the block when he won HOH. What is that?
Speaker 1:So what does that mean? To win the HOH? He didn't get the letter, he didn't get the room, he didn't get protection and he ends up on the block, having to win the blockbuster in order to get off the block. That's unfair, and I say unfair in a gameplay rule kind of way where they messed up. The producer should not have done that.
Speaker 2:I'm sorry. That needs to be fixed in future years. They can be stolen, sure, but he needs to be immune. The winner needs to be immune.
Speaker 1:There has to to be something. Some benefit from winning the hoh, because what's the point of even having that competition? I understand the power, but what was the point? And mind you and I'm saying this, I don't know how you are I'm not a huge fan of riley at all, like I'm not a big fan of his at all, but I think, from a game perspective, I I don't think it was fair on their part.
Speaker 2:Agreed and you know, you know, they all their, their whole main purpose is to be as fair as possible.
Speaker 1:They certainly were not there I mean, I, I don't think so either, and I will say, though, mickey made a smart move. The way she did it was beautiful. The way she stole his hoh was perfect. Uh, the way that everyone made him think that it was ashley, um, and he called out ashley, which was when it happened I was laughing my ass off.
Speaker 2:To be honest with you, um, yeah, even though he's so convinced, did try to tell him that it was mickey yeah, how do you not? Use the information that it was whoever was one of the first. Maybe it was morgan who said it, but he told him. Basically, the other person found her and helped her look for something, so clearly she found it.
Speaker 1:I don't know, man that's so crazy and then. So then we get ava, crazy, ava becoming head of household. Uh, she puts up, uh, three people for she puts up our boy again, keanu Keanu. She puts up, interestingly, zach Zach is the interesting one. I could not believe she put up Zach.
Speaker 2:After she told Zach he was good. Why do?
Speaker 1:you keep doing that, dude. You finally see Zach with some fire, though Zach was like she promised me. She I mean, I don't know where his game has been um, he's been kind of running in the coattail, but she puts up zach, she puts up, uh, kianu, and then she puts up um, also uh, was it kelly again? Vince, oh vince, that's right vince the move this week, dude, is to get Vince out. In my opinion, if you can get Vince out, that's the move.
Speaker 2:Yeah, he realized last week he was playing the middle too much and kind of drew a line in the sand when he the wrong line, Rachel and. Ashley yeah.
Speaker 1:Oh boy, but I, I, if, if he doesn't win the veto, he's out, or he doesn't win the blockbuster. I think he doesn't win the veto, he's out. Or he doesn't win the blockbuster, I think he's out. I don't think the move is to get rid of Keanu right now, even though he keeps winning, because I think, ultimately, first of all, everyone dislikes and he's not going to win the ultimate vote. I don't think, and or maybe he will, but I just I think he's a good one to string along a little bit the string along a little bit.
Speaker 2:I think jury-wise is that predictable. Additionally, I think there people are ever since we'll say, the last two or three seasons that they've added the blockbuster in the third person. I think h hohs are not playing it correct at all, and here's why. Here's my little, my little thing on why and using you know me, I like numbers and math. Okay, so last few weeks, everybody wants Keanu out. Okay, if you put Keanu up right away, first of all, he gets an extra chance to pull himself off.
Speaker 2:One, okay, two, let's play a little math here. Okay, you have three people nominated for eviction, okay, one, two, three that's six people play for for eviction? Okay, one, two, three that's six people play in the veto, correct? Okay, so that's, if any one of the three win, they're pulling themselves off. You agree, we'll say majority of the time, just for, obviously, riley maybe would have kept them the same to save Catherine, but that's a rare instance. Okay, so that's three. The HOH plays themselves. That's four. You're now up to a 67% chance of winning the veto. Okay, then the other two picks. If one of the two, one of the three people who are up win, they're picking someone who's going to pull themselves off. If the winner of the hoh, who also plays, wins, they have the power to pull someone off. So why would you put your target up right away when there's a much better chance they're going to come down anyways? You've done not many more people. Wait until the veto, then put your target up, is it? I don't understand why no one is doing this.
Speaker 1:Well, they mentioned that. Possibly the reason why they're not doing it is because they have the blockbuster now, so the backdoor becomes something a little different. But I agree with you 100% you have to at least eliminate, as you say with odds, at least one of the competitions they have a chance to win in order to get them out.
Speaker 2:And a good player like Keanu. You're going to give him two chances in a one in six and then a one in three, mind you dude Right.
Speaker 1:So he's the last couple of vetoes, he's one. As we talk about a survivor, often he's building that resume of wins and how can you? You can't like yeah, it is what it is, you can't dude what I don't get it.
Speaker 2:I I think. I think big future players are going to need to reanalyze. As long as there's the three people up, it's totally different, and you get weeks like where jimmy, all three of his nominees, don't even go, aren't even voted on in the end and he ends up putting up five people like he messed with.
Speaker 1:Hoh was a mess, like a total mess.
Speaker 2:Yeah, I think they need to reexamine their strategy a lot a lot.
Speaker 1:I, I think, so I, I don't know. I wouldn't call this season's cast the most strategic thinkers on the planet. Let's just um let's just say that, um, but yeah, so we'll see how it goes. I just, you know, I I often watch these reality shows and go, I can play it so much better. I'm like what the?
Speaker 2:heck. I mean, it's always easier at home, not under the lights and stuff, but the big brother's a little different Cause I feel like you're living in that house now. I mean, how many weeks?
Speaker 1:are we on already? Yeah, we're. So we're over a month in like right. So by this, point.
Speaker 2:They've got to be used to this like there's no, I was nervous and I made a mistake in the first game.
Speaker 1:Excuse anymore, we're over a month in so oh, boy, speaking of, uh, conclusions of reality shows, one that we were both watching, that we haven't talked about yet, since the last broadcast was destination s on nbc. Yes, oh, what a finale it was. First of all, I thought, uh, you had the final three, which was rick zibo, who's a bird watcher, and better love rick. Uh, we have peter weber, of course. The bachelor, of course, traders, uh also. And we had biggie bailey, biggie the sports, the, the quick guy. I call him the quick guy he always has a thing, dadgummit.
Speaker 1:What's going on? I'm like this dude gives the best confessionals I see on reality tv.
Speaker 2:I mean, he was just oh he's a walking billboard for a Southern accent.
Speaker 1:He's a walking like quit. He's like that's too short. I don't know where he has this library of sayings in his head, but he just is unbelievable. He has a huge following on social media, so I can kind of see why. Definitely so the finale had. First of all, we start the finale. We're in this hall of paintings of everyone who's been eliminated and they're playing a game based on destinations where they choose placement, and it's clear that Rick is targeting Biggie. He wants Biggie out. He doesn't want Biggie in the final two, so they have to get one more person and then get to the final two. So they're playing this game along and both Rick keeps pushing Biggie back, biggie's pushing Peter back. Peter is getting a lot of questions wrong. I don't know what's happening with Peter and it ends up at Biggie, piggy, piggy, biggie and Peter. I end up all the way in the back, as far back as I can go. There's one final question and there's a tiebreaker, and who wins the tiebreaker?
Speaker 1:Peter by one mile, one island One island, so the question had to do with how many islands are on Venice, and by one island he misses the answer and you could see Biggie in the conventional and it's like he's all that excited in the wrong way. I'm sorry, biggie. So the final two is Rick the birdwatcher, and Peter the pilot, and they have to follow a series of clues throughout london which was very cool, since I had just been there in the fall.
Speaker 2:So that was cool to see all the place. Like half the places they were going to we went to.
Speaker 1:So and I've been there too myself, and I, I love, love it. The tower london's one of my favorite spots to go.
Speaker 2:Yeah, that was very cool.
Speaker 1:So it's raining, of course, with London right, and they're going through the clues and they get to the final clue where they have to figure out where Destination X is. Where does Peter say it is?
Speaker 2:I think Peter goes to Tower of London, tower of.
Speaker 1:London, yes, the Tower of London where the doves fall, and, if you know anything about my game show background, the dude who goes out right before I get in the hot seat. There's a question about the Tower of London, which is crazy and I've been there and Rick goes to Big Ben. One of them is correct. Who is correct? You ask?
Speaker 2:Rick. Rick is a winner. Of course, before that goes to commercial too, they make it seem like rick is doubting himself and has it wrong, which right away I'm like okay, so rick won a very emotional win I found.
Speaker 1:I I kind of felt for him. He played. I had a good feeling about him from the way beginning of the season.
Speaker 2:I would love to see him on Traders.
Speaker 1:Me too. Me too, I think he would be. I would love to see Biggie on Traders too, actually.
Speaker 2:Yeah, honestly.
Speaker 1:But yeah, I would like to see that. He played a great game, won $250,000. Nothing to sneeze at whatsoever, um, and hopefully mbc has not renewed destination x, but I hope they do. It kind of gives me a mix of amazing race and survivor and has that social game big brother, but it also is amazing race. But they're on this bus and what did you feel overall? How did you feel about?
Speaker 2:as I mentioned before, I think that it grew on me a lot. I wasn't so sure about it the first couple episodes, and then I really liked it by the end, honestly. Yeah, me too, and then I also liked how, at the end, after he won, they went back into all of the previous episodes where he was giving hints at the actual answer.
Speaker 1:That was crazy to me. I love that. It shows you. If you're going to play in season two, you got to pay closer attention to the clues that are being given to you for sure. So yeah, destination X. I'm looking forward to it. Speaking of looking forward to some shows, the Floor just announced their theme for season three is going to be about the states the states battling each other, so that should be interesting.
Speaker 2:And our speculation was they'd have two people from each state or something like that.
Speaker 1:Like the senators. Yeah, senator representation Also. So the floor is two people. Well, possibly two people from every state. 99 beat is 99 to beat, I think it's called, or yeah something like that fox coming up. A bunch of reality stars on that show, including some big brother alumni. Um, that should be interesting I didn't realize that.
Speaker 2:I thought that was all regular people no, no, there was some reality. Good to know that's being hosted interestingly by Ken Jeong and Aaron Andrews.
Speaker 1:Yes, interesting combination. Aaron Andrews, of course, former sports reporter, but also she co-hosted Dancing with the Stars Ken, we know from everything, practically Joel's sidekick, joel. And speaking of Joel 1% Club, you mentioned that the latest episode had what?
Speaker 2:had a the jeopardy tournament of champions semi-finalist who I saw, though I was like that guy looks familiar to me, but I didn't actually know him, whereas I feel like you would probably recognize him right away.
Speaker 1:Uh yes, I, I don't know who it is. I mean, I haven't watched the that episode yet, um, but yeah, I didn't want to spoil it. It's okay, it's all right, it's not a it's not a huge deal, um, but um, I'll watch it tonight for sure, um, anything else out there that we are watching um well, I don't know if you guys watch it, but the first half of the second season of wednesday I haven't seen season one yet, so what do you think so far of wednesday this season?
Speaker 2:it's good, I like it. Um, I don't love that they put out four episodes and then there's a three or four weeks between the second four. So I would say, wait a little longer before you start so you don't have a long wait to watch the whole thing. But I think like maybe early September 3rd or the 6th, something like that is when they release the rest of it. So maybe we'll give it another week or so before you start. But it's good you mentioned.
Speaker 1:There's cameos in there or something.
Speaker 2:There's people that there are some people in there that you'll be interested to see. They're obviously fred armisen's in it, you know from season one, but they've had some interesting ones in the season. There's, uh, christopher lloyd, who is way up your alley top brown. Christopher lloyd has a, has a part in it. Um, steve buscemi has a part in it. Nice. Um. Thaddey newton is in it. Um it Christina Ricci. So there are some interesting names who pop in in the second season.
Speaker 1:Christina Ricci, of course, is famous in the Tim Burton universe in films and what not. I can't wait to watch it. Speaking of you waiting to watch stuff, I had told you the new Fantastic Four movie. Without spoiling anything, it's fan freaking tastic. I love that film pun intended pun intended. Um, I saw superman. Our buddy mike, who we're gonna have hopefully soon on the podcast, uh, made a cameo, I think. I don't know. You've seen the movie right?
Speaker 2:no, the one thing I'm behind is movies in theaters, and I'm really behind on that I think I see mike's back in the film, if I'm not mistaken.
Speaker 1:Uh, that's also a good movie it's pretty recognizable, so I believe it a marvel particular, but I like the fantastic four slightly more than Superman and the other movie I saw which was right up both of our islands is Naked Gun.
Speaker 2:So funny dude. I'm dying to see that.
Speaker 1:I love Leslie Nielsen. I mean I've always rest in peace, leslie Nielsen. But I think they do this new film does a great homage to him in the movie and in the way that it would do the homage to him in the movie and in the way that it would do the homage to him, and I'll let you kind of watch it and enjoy it.
Speaker 2:That's great. I'm looking forward to that, and there's a few others that are out there too.
Speaker 1:We're not far, I mean speaking of September. We're not far from the new Survivor season. I'm hearing things about Survivor 49 as a gloomy season, whatever that means. I'm hearing kind of things about that.
Speaker 2:Interesting, that's interesting.
Speaker 1:I don't know if it has to do with the weather or it has to do with the contestants, but I'm hearing gloomy is like the overarching theme of the season.
Speaker 2:Interesting.
Speaker 1:Take that from what you know. I don't know anything else about it. Um, and of course, amazing race 38 is coming, which is full of big brother alumni. I think it's a season we're gonna have to watch does that start, when survivor starts as well? Starts when big brother ends right yeah, so I.
Speaker 1:So I love that, I love, I love, I love extending Big Brother, because you I don't know if you realize this, maybe you do, maybe you don't, I know, you know this that the Winter Olympics are coming up in February and every time the Winter Olympics have happened, cbs puts out a celebrity season of Big Brother. So I think we're going to have our fellow Big Brother this year.
Speaker 2:Is there any rumors about people who will be in that or not yet?
Speaker 1:Not yet, but I love me some celebrity. Big Brother, I love that stuff.
Speaker 2:You think Jerry O'Connell's pushing this time to get in.
Speaker 1:I would love to see him play the game. Actually, that would be interesting to me Also. We have House of Villains coming up this fall. That I'm looking forward to. We have some good reality TV definitely coming out, and we'll be covering all of it right here Again, not weekly, but as we can, we will definitely pop on here and give you our takes.
Speaker 2:And hopefully we're still covering baseball a little deeper into the fall.
Speaker 1:I would hope so, as long as our teams are in it. I'm going to be a little baby diaper, and and, and, and, and, and, and, and, and, and, and, and, and, and, and, and, and, and, and, and, and, and, and. Uh, oh, poor rocket got upset when I said baby diapers no, it was the doorbell. Oh, so your cops is here, see that. Um, but yeah, that's, that's what we got so far. Folks, um, we're, we're, we're watching things in, uh, the summer, we're deep in the summer and we're seeing how things go. It was great, great to see you and Rosie and Dylan.
Speaker 1:Definitely Likewise yeah it was, but yeah, that's it. Anything else you want to talk about I?
Speaker 2:think we covered it.
Speaker 1:I think so too. This has been Around the Bases the pop culture and sports podcast with your host.
Speaker 2:Charlie Seymour.
Speaker 1:And I'm Tim Sterberg. Until next time, keep it real and keep it big brother. Bye everybody, take care, let's go. Cubs and Mets, let's go. Let's get some wins, thank you,
