Around the Bases 2.23: Betrayal and Alliances on Big Brother, MLB Playoff Hopes, NFL Season Begins!
Charlie and Tim return with another rapid-fire episode of "Around the Bases," reflecting on their impressive milestone of nearly 50 episodes recorded since launching in January 2024. What began as a passion project has evolved into not just compelling content, but a meaningful way for the hosts to stay connected through their shared love of sports and pop culture.
The duo dives deep into the current Big Brother season, championing underdogs Keanu and Kelly who continue to survive despite being constantly targeted. They dissect the fascinating psychology behind contestant Vince, whose emotional breakdowns after his own strategic moves have become a recurring theme in the house. "If you're gonna make bold moves, fine, make your bold moves, but stick to them," Tim argues, highlighting the disconnect between Vince's gameplay and his inability to accept consequences. The hosts meticulously analyze Keanu's Head of Household victory, nomination strategies, and the complex power dynamics that have defined this season, offering insights that casual viewers might miss.
Beyond reality TV, Tim enthusiastically recommends Survivor Australia vs. The World, featuring American favorites like Tony, Parvati, and Cirie competing against international players. The conversation shifts to baseball's playoff race, where both hosts' teams—the Mets and Cubs—Charlie shares that both teams are making serious wildcard pushes as September baseball heats up. They break down current standings, potential matchups, and the mathematical possibilities still in play for both teams.
As NFL season approaches, the hosts preview the highly anticipated Bills-Ravens matchup featuring star quarterbacks Josh Allen and Lamar Jackson, while lamenting changes to NFL RedZone's formerly commercial-free format. The episode closes with Tim's proud showcase of his Amazing Spider-Man #300 comic—featuring the first appearance of Venom—and some lighthearted banter about upcoming movies and family-friendly cinema options. Welcome to Around the Bases, the pop culture and sports podcast, with your host, charlie Seymour, and I'm Tim Sternberg. Hit it, nick. We are back here. We are, charlie. We're back so quickly. What happened? What's going on? I know, right, we just had to record another episode because there's so much to talk about and we're going to get started. How are you doing, buddy? I'm doing well. How are you doing? I'm doing well. How are you doing? I'm doing? Great, man, I can't complain, it's we're. We're another episode in for a round of bases. I, I must say we started this podcast in january of 24, which is last year, and I think we're getting close to 50 episodes already between the two seasons of this podcast, which, which is crazy, wow, that is crazy. I wouldn't have guessed that many but yeah, I know.
Speaker 1:But you know it's a great thing about for me. You know it's great that we record this awesome podcast, but it's nice to see you when we do it and it's it's. It's our way to kind of I mean, we, we text each other every day, but it's our way to kind of catch up and it's kind of cool to do that.
Speaker 2:So yeah, that's a win win.
Speaker 1:Dude. So, big brother, are you watching the show man?
Speaker 2:Of course you know. You know we're watching dumb question. Pretty, pretty live. The last couple of times too, because it's I've had some fantasy football drafts going on.
Speaker 1:So I've had to make sure we finished Big Brother before the draft was started, and I'm sure you are. We're going to talk about football in a little bit, folks, if football season's starting. I'm sure that you were like I got to get to Big Brother because, listen, this is really worthy television to watch this season. It's unbelievable. Like I'm enjoying it.
Speaker 2:Yeah, it's been an enjoyable season, don't know I. I think we've we've mentioned this before, but not sure if, uh, all the players on this season are really strategizing the best way they could be.
Speaker 1:Let's put it that way well, to to that point, charlie, let me ask you it almost feels like they think they're in some kind of retreat and they're on tv and they're not really playing a game. I don't know, do you kind of get that?
Speaker 2:I mean, I'm seeing things online that, like multiple of them, didn't even realize that they were on the live feeds all the time, like how do you not know that?
Speaker 1:dude, this show has been on for 25 years. It's been on for 25 years, I believe they're. They're that ignorant I mean when big brother premiered. Big brother premiered before I was even on. Who wants to be a millionaire, which anniversary is coming up, by the way, in a couple weeks. That I mean, that's crazy.
Speaker 2:Like a week from today, almost right, or no? Yeah, because it aired two days before september 9th so yeah, five days away.
Speaker 1:Well, as we record, but it's September 4th as we record this episode, which you might get later today or tomorrow, but the 5th, but yeah, but anyway. So back to Big Brother. Sorry, I digress because it's always about me, I'm sorry, dude. There are players, though, and this is why this is what I want to kind of touch on. There are players, though. They're making this season meaty good, and I think that we're kind of rooting for the same ones, if I'm not mistaken yeah, I think so too.
Speaker 2:We're kind of rooting for the people who have been ostracized and everybody's ganged up on them the most which I you know, listen you.
Speaker 1:You ostracize somebody. I'm gonna root for them. So you want to make someone popular in america's player, which I have a feeling I know who that's going to be, but so we're rooting for obviously I.
Speaker 2:I am rooting for you're talking about the vote for the money on the side at the end of that, yeah, at the end of the at the end. Who is your speculation?
Speaker 1:Keanu, keanu Okay.
Speaker 2:I hope I would lie. That's who my votes are going to go for.
Speaker 1:So either Kelly or Keanu.
Speaker 2:My only concern is that, like Rachel has such like a high following that people will just mass vote for her.
Speaker 1:I think the the if she, I mean the double, I mean the positive of her winning the game is that people might be privy to vote somewhere else instead of her. I know Taylor won both, but it's possible that you know what I mean. Like they could kind of sway. And Taylor season you remember Taylor season. She was definitely the underdog that a lot of us were rooting for because she was ostracized in the house.
Speaker 2:Yeah, there were multiple weeks where it looked bad for her and she pulled it out yep, and so I became a huge fan of hers in her season.
Speaker 1:But, yeah, so kelly kianu, those are the people I'm rooting for right now in the game um, who else is left? Morgan morgan is a gamer, morgan's a good player. I must say, um, yeah, yeah, I she's no part of the team kind of doing the ostracizing a little bit, I think. Um, uh, vince is the head, vince and mickey are the head ostracizers.
Speaker 2:I'll say um, yeah, vince is kind of tiresome yeah, listen.
Speaker 1:So listen about him real quick before we recap the week. If you're gonna make bold moves, fine, make your bold moves, but stick to them, like so? If I'm gonna play the game right, I'm you gotta own your moves, dude, like you. So you did it okay. So the next week, if you're nominated for by the hat of household, just take it. Don't like break down. Boohoo. What did I do to my game? You made the move am I wrong. No dude, what the heck yeah, he's.
Speaker 2:He's getting kind of annoying. If we're being honest, the I'm honestly, I think the thing we took away the most from the last couple episodes were liking Keanu even more for being like listen, dude, you've burned me so many times. I want to trust you, but this is what's going to happen now because of what you have done, and finally he like sat him down and talked to him. He's like what, like, what do you want me to do?
Speaker 1:like Keanu has every right to be pissed, honestly, 100% now did I think Keanu early on in the game misspoke? Yeah, I mean, I don't think he should have said to everybody I'm targeting you, you, you, yeah, but he was pissed they were all going after him and he was 100% they were yelling at him like he got.
Speaker 2:He did get wrapped up in the in the moment of that with the emotions and everything, but I I mean at that point everyone was still out to get him. So he needed he basically needed to show some fire and look where he is now.
Speaker 1:I'm not complaining. Listen, if I was in his similar position, if I was on that show, I would have done almost the exact same thing. And, who knows, emotional. I might have said I'm targeting you, you, you and you. You don't know in a moment what's going to happen. So I and we talked about this too before I'm not normally rooting for this type because he's strong, he's like the physical type, because I'm not that you know. But he has earned so much respect for me, like I love the way he's freaking play and you know what. He shows humility, he shows grace, which is amazing, because just with him and rachel and yes, 100. He should have targeted her last week, without a doubt, so she can like not get all upset about that yeah, that's where I wanted to follow up with, hypothetically speaking, since spoiler alert, Rachel's not on the block.
Speaker 2:If she wins HOH next week, does she hold true or does she put Keanu up?
Speaker 1:I think she holds true. I think it's not in her benefit to put him up. I think he's a number for her and, honestly, there are bigger targets in the house that are going to remain after this week and, honestly, there are bigger targets in the house that are going to remain after this week. Listen, if Vince wins, we're kind of jumping ahead a little bit, but if Vince wins Blockbuster, he's the biggest target and, in either way, a big target is going to remain when we talk about who's on the block.
Speaker 2:Yeah, yeah, basically, as Rachel says at some point in the episode, I'm pretty sure I put up all these people myself when it was my hoh, yeah, I mean, and love her or hate her.
Speaker 1:She knows how to play the game. I love that about her. I mean she, yeah, she, she doesn't like, she, she's showing about playing the game. Um, I, I will say this. Um, you know I. All right, we'll go back to recap first and then I'll kind of touch on OK, well, we'll get it. So the how to household competition is what's the memory?
Speaker 2:comp?
Speaker 1:All right, let's talk about the memory comp. The memory comp is interesting and it's funny that I forgot about the memory comp. But apparently Keanu memory is not a problem for him. He won the comp. What do you think about that?
Speaker 2:he did and it was funny because who was it? Like I want to say it was will will, I believe went out second and was making this big thing about all right, finally, it's a memory account. I can't wait. Is that?
Speaker 1:who was I that I don't remember, and then they had like, then they had a confessional with him in the in the diary room. He's like. Oh, I guess memories up yeah um, yeah, I mean, listen, this is for me and I think for you too. Again, I don't speak for you.
Speaker 2:I think Will went out first.
Speaker 1:And I think Rachel went out second. Yes, and she was like you know, she was like I can't believe. And so basically this is a classic big. But let me explain the comp real quick. It's a classic big brother comp where they show everyone these videos on a memory wall.
Speaker 1:This has been done before and you have to kind of remember things about the videos basically each moment was a gif a gif, yes, which is hilarious, because if you're in the house for however long they've been, this is really their first glimpse at what they look like on tv. So it's, it's, it's amusing, um, and so, yeah, will went out, rachel went out, and, uh, this was the best case scenario, I think, for us as fans of Keanu is for him to win ahead of household Now.
Speaker 2:I think now is a very important time because you want to kind of shift the numbers From the other side out.
Speaker 1:Yes, exactly, you want to shift the number, so I'm hoping, by the way, just for speaking for next week, I'm hoping that Kelly pulls it off, because that would be definitely an ideal situation.
Speaker 2:Yes, because Keanu can't play.
Speaker 1:Exactly, or Lauren, I think Lauren, especially if Vince is left, but yeah, so anyway, to recap, keanu wins head of household, but yeah, so anyway, to recap, keanu Wins had a household.
Speaker 1:He goes through back and forth with Rachel about I'm not going to nominate you and Rachel it's a bunch of confessionals about. Well, I'm going to trust him for this week only and you know, I still don't forget what he did to me last week and, honestly, he did the right move by trying to target her last week Because Catherine was a number for him, not Rachel really confident number. And so she goes through the motions with him and so he starts interviewing people about, you know, as they do talking to people about and had a household, about who he's going to put up, and he's very clear, right, the entire time. He's very clear, like Vince, I'm going to put you on the block. I'm being as transparent as I can be. He said something along those lines and you have to respect that, like I would do that too. And so vince, of course, in classic vince style, starts I can't believe I messed up my game, dude again, like back to my point, allowing a down here that vince impression one more time okay, oh, we're gonna do this.
Speaker 1:That was pretty good that's not my game, that's not my game that's not my game.
Speaker 2:Um come on man come on, man, we dub this. This house is very tired of seeing vince cry. I saw pretty funny. Uh, I I muted that one we've talked about. There's this one Twitter account that basically updates the live feeds in real time and I kept seeing spoilers so I muted that account and ever since I have not seen any big spoilers like HOH and stuff like that. I don't mind some of the other like in the house stuff that comes out, but why I bring this up is I can't filter it I saw this tweet that said, yeah, I turned on the live feeds again, and then vince was crying again, so I turned it off.
Speaker 1:I feel like that's how I would act, because I'm sick and tired of seeing it come on vince I.
Speaker 1:I just, I don't know if this is the way you kind of want to be portrayed to America. I mean, I, you're not coming and I'm talking. You're like I'm talking to Vince. You're not coming across, bro, as like this master player. When you make a, a bull move which he has made, and then you decide to cry about it Like what? Own it Like, just own it, be the player. Own it what it's, own it like, just own it, be the player. Own it like what. So if you go home, you've been on big brother, just play the game, let the game go, dude.
Speaker 2:What are you doing? Yeah, he, he needs to. He needs to take a step back and think about it and maybe change going forward if he's able to stay alive but, bro, he's not, you know.
Speaker 1:Honestly, I think he's in this bubble where he doesn't understand how it's coming across and perceived, and he's just not because his fellow houseguest, really I mean I'm only.
Speaker 2:I mean morgan herself has proclaimed that she hasn't won anything, which it's still early. But if it's him against her, against mickey, right.
Speaker 1:So yeah, power of veto is still up for grabs as far as this recording goes, even though I know who won but yeah and we'll keep it that way, that it's. I will not spoil it for you. I will not spoil it, um, but yeah, so she hasn't won yet. Uh, people haven't. I mean so right now on the Morgan, mickey and Vince and Vin. Yeah, so I almost let it split. All right, never mind.
Speaker 2:Yeah don't, I won't do that.
Speaker 1:I won't do it. We'll kill it there. All right, Right. So anyway, more about non-spoilers for the show. So if Vince, Morgan and Mickey are still on, if one of them are on the block. So here's the scenarios. I kind of see Vito outstanding. If the three of them are in the blockbuster, let's say Keanu wins, Power Vito, and the noms don't change. If the three of them are in the blockbuster and Vince wins, I see Mickey going home. What do you think? If Vince wins, I see Mickey going home. What do you think?
Speaker 2:If Vince wins. So that would be.
Speaker 1:Mickey against Morgan.
Speaker 2:I do think so. Even though Keanu wants Morgan, I do think that Morgan would probably have the votes there. I think Mickey's rubbed a lot of people the wrong way. I think the real question is what happens if Mickey wins it.
Speaker 1:So I think Vince goes in either scenario If Mickey wins or Morgan wins.
Speaker 2:You think Vince has to win Blockbuster to be safe. You think.
Speaker 1:A hundred percent.
Speaker 2:Yeah, okay, even though Keanu is kind of pushing for Vince to stay, yeah.
Speaker 1:Yeah, yeah, because look how he pissed off Lauren.
Speaker 2:Like the one that I think maybe he has a chance is if Morgan won, because then Morgan's a vote. I think she goes with Vince, mickey wouldn't, so there's one extra vote, and then I think a lot of people generally wanted Mickey out. Last week I could see Rachel and her posse taking out Mickey instead. Yeah, it all depends, but I think that's a better shot than if it's the other way.
Speaker 1:That's a good point. It all depends on, if she does win, who the replacement nominee would be, because that kind of can mix it up a little bit.
Speaker 2:I mean, if anybody playing out all scenarios, as already know, of course of course I'm getting good at it.
Speaker 1:Um, if there was a replacement nominee, who would you think would be a good replacement for either one of the three? Who do you think kiana would pick is my question um wait, hang on.
Speaker 2:Are we talking blockbuster or veto?
Speaker 1:no, I'm talking about veto, because we don't know who won yet. So if he had to last, night oh, it did error.
Speaker 2:Okay, so have you watched it, yet no, I I know the result, but okay, but you haven't watched, yet yeah so all right so what are we talking about?
Speaker 1:so then, if we know who won the veto, we we can, we can we can. Why are we talking about Morgan?
Speaker 2:Yes, this is going to air tomorrow right.
Speaker 1:No, Morgan won, no Morgan won.
Speaker 2:Morgan won.
Speaker 1:Yeah, so this is going to air tomorrow.
Speaker 2:It's okay, morgan won, and then okay, hold on. There is a lot to talk about if we're going to go live here, so okay.
Speaker 1:And that's right, morgan won.
Speaker 2:And see, I didn't know if you saw it, sorry, yeah, we watched last night okay, okay, yeah, morgan won devito, so that kind of, and ashley was put up in her place. Yes, but hold on before that happens. That's what I want to talk about. Okay, before morgan decides. So you haven't watched the episode yet. No, because, yeah, right, so let me just throw us, since we're going to talk about the episode.
Speaker 1:You can talk about the episode 100%, because I know what happens.
Speaker 2:One important thing that I don't know if you've seen yet, because it wasn't a huge thing. So I believe it starts with Keanu's idea. But Keanu comes up with this idea where if Morgan uses the veto on Vince instead of herself, then he will put up Lauren instead to guarantee that Morgan stays, but he then, after telling her that, tells Vince he's not going to do it, he's just going to say it, and then he's going to put up Ashley anyways and then fast forward later in the episode. Yeah, tim, if you're just listening, tim's jaw is hanging from the floor. You're going to watch the episode today. Then, after that fact that he says he's not going to do it anyways, morgan kind of thinks about it out loud in the group setting and then suggests it herself. And then Keanu says, honestly, I would do that if you would. And then Vince has to pretend like this is the first time he's hearing of this idea. So Vinny is very playing both sides, even with his closest ally here. You need to watch this episode, dude, you see that's slimy as anything.
Speaker 2:No, you see, that's slimy, you don't do that with your closest people. Was was doing that, but he I don't love.
Speaker 1:I don't love that keanu has been safe and that's why I don't love that. I don't love that. How many times I love keanu. We've talked about that. But how many times does the guy have to betray him in order for him to like why would he support? Look what keanu, look who's. Keanu has gotten out all his allies. Like he, he got out, catherine, he got out, riley, he got out. Uh, I mean all the people that have kind of been on his team, like how, why, why I don't understand it.
Speaker 1:I don't understand it it's, it's. I don't know either I think the move is to get him out now, with him and mickey and ashley on the block. I think the move is to get vince out. Do I think that vince has the votes? I don't know, but it has to. Has to be either Vince or Mickey if he wants to have an impactful week. I think Ashley is not the vote for this week. I don't think she is honestly.
Speaker 2:I agree. I think that was simply, as he explains in the episode, that basically there's only two other choices he has to put up, and it's either her or Ava, and he feels like ashley who has the votes to stay.
Speaker 2:So that's why he did it and honestly I think that was the move for him for the rachel standpoint, because ava is aligned with rachel exactly and he doesn't want to be in the odd numbered out when it comes to it, which I think it's fair, and he kept tb and he was honest with rachel about it. As you'll see in the episode, he's like I've only got two choices. She's one of the choices.
Speaker 1:He's not playing emotionally.
Speaker 2:Rachel, then maybe I don't want to spoil too much for you because you haven't seen it yet.
Speaker 1:That's okay, I don't care.
Speaker 2:Rachel may pull a Rachel threatened card out of her back pocket and it makes Keanu start thinking well, maybe I should just put up Rachel instead of Ashley.
Speaker 1:Seriously Seriously.
Speaker 2:Yeah, it's definitely worth watching.
Speaker 1:All right, I'll check it out for sure, big Brother folks. So my prediction based on who's going to go home tonight, I feel, looking at the votes, it's probably going to be um, I don't know. I just said vince, right I? Don't know I'm, I'm split I think mickey has the votes. I, I think will's gonna vote for mickey. I think ava's gonna vote for mickey.
Speaker 1:I think, uh, definitely don't forget, we still have the blockbuster, right, but I think I think vince has burned so many people that I think that he's going to go home or go to the jury house. Their jury now.
Speaker 1:Right, they're a jury I believe this is the first jury now yeah, I think so or they're one away, one of the two dude, I think this show needs like a double eviction coming up. Come on, we gotta have something going on here, probably next week right yeah, I think. So I think you'll probably have julie tonight. Uh, as this airs, probably you guys have seen it already, but she'll probably say something along the lines of and next week a double eviction on big brother. That's it um all right.
Speaker 2:So big brother folks also did I notice that I don't know if this is accurate, but is there a a Tuesday episode of Big Brother in the coming weeks?
Speaker 1:Probably that's when September is when they start to get funky with the schedule.
Speaker 2:So I can see that I thought I saw one on a random night that I'm not used to on the TV guy, but I don't know.
Speaker 1:I'm sure that's coming and we have a new unlocked this week, I think. Right, we do yeah, so we'll see who that special guest is. They've been, I must say they've been Boston Rob. I mean they've been having decent guests. I never thought I'd see a Boston Rob Big Brother crossover. That was pretty cool for a fan of both.
Speaker 2:Yeah, once he became BFFs with Derek on Traitors, I feel like that was inevitable.
Speaker 1:Okay, real quick, because I know you haven't watched it, but I have to say this why aren't you watching Survivor, australia versus the world? What is going on?
Speaker 2:We haven't had time yet. Take it easy. Hey, relax guy, Take a rest.
Speaker 1:I mean it's not like you have a new baby or something. I mean, come on, I'm just kidding.
Speaker 2:The problem is it's on YouTube only. That's the problem.
Speaker 1:What you can pull it up on the TV.
Speaker 2:Well, I know, but I'm just saying YouTube is not in your first thought. You know what I mean. You've got your DVR, you've got Netflix and Prime and there's other ones ahead of YouTube but it's high on the list.
Speaker 1:I'm just yanking your chain.
Speaker 2:I know you are and I did think that we wouldn't have another episode. I thought we'd have two weeks between when we recorded the plan was to watch this coming week, like maybe Monday or Tuesday, watch it.
Speaker 1:So we had to record earlier than I thought. So this weekend they're at the finale already, the final four I know.
Speaker 2:And I keep forgetting that they do two. I'm keep don't look for spoilers they do two, I'm not. I forgot. I kept forgetting that they do two a week. That's why it's surprising how fast it went let me just quickly say what.
Speaker 1:I'm not spoiling a thing, because I know a lot of our audience probably hasn't watched it yet either. I will say this it is worthy worthwhile, fantastic of a season.
Speaker 2:As a survivor fan, it is a newly I mean, I can only imagine with the people on it dude, and in the world competition is and the australians are amazing, like they're great.
Speaker 1:Um I I highly recommend, highly highly recommend. I mean I I was saying I was saying to somebody that last week or this week I'm sort surprised that CBS didn't purchase the rights to this season to pair up with Big Brother because it would have killed in the ratings. I think the person I mentioned this to said he doesn't think that the regular Survivor kind of fans would want to see it. I'm like no.
Speaker 2:No, not when they have fan players of who the regular fans are fans of. Yeah, I mean three. And poverty on the same season. Who wouldn't want to watch that?
Speaker 1:I'm rooting for all of them. So I hope all of them, all three of our american players, uh, do well. Who was the other one again?
Speaker 2:tony, tony and poverty've got to start that.
Speaker 1:Yeah, it's fantastic.
Speaker 2:And David.
Speaker 1:And David from.
Speaker 2:Deal or no Deal, yeah, yeah.
Speaker 1:Yeah, so no spoilers. I want to talk about it. We're going to talk about it.
Speaker 2:It's high on the list. It's high on the list. Okay, it's probably, other than like, it's probably second on the list to finish. So it'll be soon, so so good.
Speaker 1:That's so for the. For our fans, it's survivor Australia versus the world. There are episodes available on YouTube for us Americans who don't get channel eight from Australia that shows a show, so check it out. It is fantastic, all right.
Speaker 2:So, dude, speaking of fantastic, yeah you're feeling a little better a week later.
Speaker 1:Huh I'm pointing to my mets hat right now that I'm wearing. I'm feeling great, dude, like I'm feeling this is the time for us to start getting hot. Um, yeah, we had a couple of rough games this week. Um, and it's the marlins. I don't know, the marlins have our number for some reason, uh, but we did sweep the phillies, so that was fun. Um, and news came out today, breaking hot off the, that the Marlins are calling up Brandon Sprote against the Reds, so that's good Is it pronounced Sprote?
Speaker 1:Isn't it? I thought it was. I don't know I'm asking because every time I see his name written in my head.
Speaker 2:I always thought it was Sprowat.
Speaker 1:Oh, I always called him Sprote You're probably right at.
Speaker 2:Oh, I always call him you.
Speaker 1:You're probably right. I don't know. I think it's Sprote, but I'm not positive. But you know you mentioned to our views because we mentioned before we went on air. What were your comments after I kind of mentioned that he was you.
Speaker 2:Oh yeah, I was just saying how it's basically like the golden era right now and that's the windows open. You got the new owner spending money, you just got Soto. You're a playoff team, all of the young prospects are up. You've got now three of the starting pitching prospects in the rotation which I don't even think the most optimistic Mets fan would have thought at this point of the season. Things are looking good right there in Queens or Flushing, which would you prefer Flushing?
Speaker 1:Which would you prefer? Flushing, flushing? Well, as you said a couple episodes ago, winning a lot of games. That's what they're doing. So what about the Cubs? What about the?
Speaker 2:Cubs. The Cubs also had a pretty strong week overall. They did lose yesterday, but I mean now the Cubs' lead for wildcard one is four full games on San Diego. I mean now the Cubs lead for wildcard one is four full games on San Diego. And we're now at the point where, with the Padres kind of slumping and the Mets winning a little bit, we're back into a slight danger zone of Cubs-Mets in the first round.
Speaker 1:We'll see Wait, are we going to have a Cubs-Mets wildcard game?
Speaker 2:If it were to end today, it still would not, but the Mets are within one of San Diego now for wildcard two.
Speaker 1:That's crazy, bro. That's crazy, yeah. I mean. Either way, I guess win-win for us kind of yeah.
Speaker 2:Also, division-wise, both of them are equal, where, basically, the Cubs are six back in the lost column, the Mets are six back in the lost column, so each of them are still in striking distance, but maybe not the most likely. Do the Mets and Phillies still play one more time though, don't they?
Speaker 1:Yeah, they do Okay.
Speaker 2:so I'd say the Mets have the better chance.
Speaker 1:Either way, eventually one of our seasons is going to end, which is going to suck either way.
Speaker 2:Yeah.
Speaker 1:But what a season we're having both teams.
Speaker 2:Yeah, and it's not over, but looking more likely that both teams should be playing in October. The magic number has now changed between both the Cubs and Mets to currently the Reds got jumped. The Giants are now the first team out. The Giants have won 9 out of 10, but our Giants, so they. We got swept by them in San Francisco after we had swept the Angels and then took 2 out of 3 from the Rockies. That was the series in between and, yeah, we should have won at least one of those, but the Giants are Cincinnati, what's happening?
Speaker 2:Yeah, the Reds probably just fell on their face. They've played some good teams. Reds are mostly. I mean they could turn it around, but the way they're playing they're in trouble.
Speaker 1:And we have the Marlins.
Speaker 2:Sorry.
Speaker 1:I had to do that. I had to do that, come on.
Speaker 2:The Diamondbacks and Cardinals are both half a game behind Cincinnati, but they're both five and a half out as well, so so basically it's the Giants, the Reds, the Cubs and Mets are in that mix for wildcard, basically. Well, if we're going to count the Reds in, then the Diamondbacks and Cardinals are still only one. That's right.
Speaker 1:So there's some teams but yeah, let's go, mets and Cubs let's go, but I'd rather the Mets win the division and us at least have a chance to kind of win a playoff game.
Speaker 2:Well, as far as today goes, both the Cubs and Mets are off, but the Phillies and Brewers play head to head one more time. So one of the Cubs and Mets would gain half a game.
Speaker 1:So you're rooting for the Brewers and I'm rooting for the Philly. I mean, I'm rooting for the Brewers, you're rooting for the Phillies.
Speaker 2:Yeah, pretty much, but I don't think we're going to catch them. So we'll see what the weekend, though, will be big because the Mets play in Cincy, so the Mets can pretty much and Cincy season with two out of three more than likely Sweet, so that'll be a big one. And then we got the Giants are playing the Cardinals head-to-head, so one of those two teams will probably be done by the weekend.
Speaker 1:Also, the Padres play Colorado, though, so hopefully the Rockies can keep winning a couple games though, so hopefully the Rockies can keep winning a couple games, and I mean it's so September baseball is so unpredictable because there's so many things that have to go into play, that are in the mix, and it's going to be interesting to see how it kind of pans out in the next couple of weeks.
Speaker 2:Yeah, we should. I'd say by next week a couple more teams will be eliminated. It'll be a little more clear.
Speaker 1:So let's be speaking of being clear and first weeks, and well, no one talked about first week, but it's a stupid transition anyway. But let's talk about the Vikings. What's going on with the Vikings? The Bears are facing the Vikings this week. What do we think we're at? Are you impressed? I brought up football come on.
Speaker 2:I'm impressed that you brought up the vikings. At first I was. I wasn't sure if you were, if you were trolling and I'm gonna break it.
Speaker 1:I'm gonna bring up the ravens in a second too.
Speaker 2:See, I kind of yeah um, I mean two great games week one, I mean as far as actual football goes. I mean those two games are both one point spreads.
Speaker 1:Wow so bears Vikings bills Ravens.
Speaker 2:Yeah, so two great games where we're talking about, so that's great, um, and then the, the, the. Of course, here's something that I don't think I can remember ever thinking would be a possibility, but as you know, I love football. Week one Sunday is huge. There's so many games right, both the Bills, who are playing the Ravens, and the Bears are, respectively, sunday night and Monday night football, so they do not even you don't even have to worry about missing the other games because of that. So the reason why I brought it up in the way I did was the Bears, as you know, have not been that great for a while.
Speaker 2:The fact that the Bears are getting ticketed for a Monday night game week. One shows you that they're at least going to be watchable, so that's exciting.
Speaker 1:At least going to be watchable. That's funny, at least going to be watchable.
Speaker 2:That's funny. I will say this will be the first year where I have to consider having if the Bears are at noon during red zone, I might want the sound on the Bears game.
Speaker 1:Nice.
Speaker 2:I love that I've been a red zone first Bears on the second screen guy for years and we'll see which is your own team to be on the second screen.
Speaker 1:It is my own team yes, exactly.
Speaker 2:Team to be on the second screen yes, exactly, I mean, sunday red zone is just the best. You get eight games at the same time. I mean, for a football person it it's the best. And brief, I'll be remiss if I don't bring up the fact that this is the first year that red zone is gonna have commercials.
Speaker 1:Ew, I know how is that gonna work? They going to like stop all the games and show commercials in the middle of the game.
Speaker 2:The football comes first. So there won't. They won't be during any touchdowns. There won't be. It won't be during any important how do you coordinate that? So he's going to probably just do. They're probably going to be earlier in the in the games. First quarters during halftimes at games.
Speaker 1:But you don't necessarily have the same run where they're at in one game, is it necessarily because of stoppage and right?
Speaker 2:so I think he'll do is they'll do it when there's like a good majority of them are at halftime and there's some others going on. So like, for example, there's not a constant like, if there's like a, say, a 70 yard defensive touchdown, that doesn't happen, live on red zone sometimes because it's you know it's happening in a moment where they don't expect it. So then they they show you the touchdown after the fact. My guess is is, if you've got seven or eight games on a Sunday at noon let's say four or five of them are at halftime, no one's close to the red zone, that might be your moment and then if it comes back and something crazy happened, they'll just show you the replay. Ah, I gotcha Interesting. My favorite thing on Sundays was when he used to say Scott Hanson used to say seven hours of commercial free football. Now he already previewed it on his interview with, uh, um, pat McAfee, it's seven hours of red zone. Football starts Now. He just took out the car.
Speaker 1:To quote Vince from big brother. That would be funny, actually, if I actually had time to do that. That would actually be amusing, you know, I mean I guess you take the good with the bad. I mean the fact that you still have red zone, which is obviously, uh, prime choice, especially, I mean, if I own a, if I own a drinking establishment, I mean that's what's up there. So, you know, you maximizing your television screens, your screens, yeah, um, uh, that's just what. So, folks, if, if you're, if you're a fan of the podcast, you know this, I'm not a huge football fan, I am a fan of the bills.
Speaker 2:So, we probably won't lead these discussions real quick too, before we take off.
Speaker 1:Josh Allen.
Speaker 2:Yeah, lamar Jackson, that is appointment television.
Speaker 1:Absolutely Two great quarterbacks, 100%. I know Well you. So what shirt are you going to wear? You have your Lamar Jackson shirt.
Speaker 2:You have your Josh Allen shirt. I'll probably have to go Lamar Josh Allen t-shirt with my Lamar Jackson Jersey. I don't have a Josh Allen Jersey. So, it's the best way to be able to wear both.
Speaker 1:I love that Okay.
Speaker 2:All right, fair enough, but the interesting thing is is that this will be I'll probably, we'll probably have to wait till like late second quarter and kind of piecemeal it with some pausing, but we're going to have to watch most of Big Brother during halftime, I think, because can't miss Bill's Raven.
Speaker 1:Sorry, that game is no that's too good, and it's week one. I mean it's gonna set the stage for the season. Um, yeah, it's. I mean it's a good test for both teams to see who can kind of triumph. Uh, it'll be interesting to see. I think it'll say a lot too about the season in general for those two teams and how they're gonna kind of pivot and go. And I, I, I expect that game. With my limited football knowledge, I expect that game to be very close. I think it's going to be a battle defensively and offensively. So we'll see how it goes.
Speaker 2:Yeah, it should be fun. Honestly, it really should.
Speaker 1:So, speaking of fun, real quick, I didn't. So last week I did. Last episode I did an unboxing and this came after. I just wanted to share it. This is last episode. I did an unboxing and this came after. I just wanted to share it.
Speaker 2:This is amazing spider-man number 300. And wait, wait, pull it back just a smidge so I can see the bottom. Oh there, wow, okay, that looks.
Speaker 1:It just looks so good in the slab, you're, you're not wrong so this is a newsstand edition, how you know, it's a newsstand, just for those who don't. If it's a barcode here, if it wasn't a newsstand, it how you know, it's a newsstand, just for those who don't. If it's a barcode here, if it wasn't a newsstand, it would have a spidey face here. Newsstands are rarer. These actually came off of a newsstand. I bought this exact copy, this book, on a newsstand, in 1988. So this came out in 1988. This is the third edition, third comic by mcfarlane for spider-man, and what's critical about this is the very first appearance of venom, the character of venom, eddie brock. This is it, and this is one of the most highly collected comic books from the 1980s. Right here, and I got a 9.4, which is not bad for a newsstand edition. It's about an 800 comic book right now, as the market stands, which it's never being sold. By the way, this is something don't PM me. I'm not selling it. It's never being sold, ever, ever, ever. It's in my collection.
Speaker 1:Forever, so there's. By the way, I don't show this that often, but here's the back of it. It's an addition, it's um, it's a uh addition, uh, it's a. It's a advertisement for a video game, top secret si that's so fun.
Speaker 2:80s, so 80s um.
Speaker 1:But yeah, that is really cool, so cool, I love it. Um, so, um, let's see, we got. We got some movies come out real quick, uh, anything, uh, on, on, your must see anything you want.
Speaker 2:Um, well, I mean we, we, we love pixar movies, so you want to see? Well, I mean, we love Pixar movies, so we still want to see Bad Guys 2.
Speaker 1:And you haven't. So you're going to see Naked Gun, Although that's not a.
Speaker 2:Pixar movie that's just animated, no yeah.
Speaker 1:But animated movies are great. I mean, you're talking to the guy who collects comic books.
Speaker 2:Yeah, I still have been very bad, All of them. I have not seen naked gun Superman. Fantastic for you, you have some kind of excuse or something. Yeah, I know it's been a little baby but no, you know what's funny is um we um. Do you guys have an Alamo?
Speaker 1:The draft house. I want to. I want that so bad. No, I've heard about it.
Speaker 2:Okay, so there's one of those in Wrigleyville and they are bringing back this thing called baby movies. So I think it's like Tuesday or Wednesday for the morning shows. Until a certain time They'll have the lights on a little more, they'll have the sound turned down a little more and it's baby friendly. You're supposed to be able to. I love that. I love that. I just saw that. So we'll, we're considering it, we'll see.
Speaker 1:Yeah, I thought that the only concern is can you imagine a theater full of crying babies?
Speaker 2:yeah, I know, but if you're bringing your own, yeah, bring your own baby, it's only the ones before a certain time of day. So the people are warned.
Speaker 1:Yeah, no, I'm just saying Don't go to one of those if you don't want to hear it. It's nice for socialization, for new parents to kind of socialize with other new parents, and I think it's a great idea.
Speaker 2:Yeah, so we might. We might check that out one of these days.
Speaker 1:Sweet. Anything else you want to bring up? No, I think we covered it. I think so too, buddy. It's good to see you, as always.
Speaker 2:Good to see you too, Greg. Good to be back.
Speaker 1:Absolutely.
