Luxury Holistic Wellness Retreat

Speaker 1

Hello, delco. This is Michael Barkan, welcoming you to the Good Neighbor Podcast, where fans of local businesses and their neighbors come together. It's my pleasure once again to introduce my friend and neighbor, our host Bob Blasey.

Speaker 2

Thank you, michael Barkan, for that introduction and everybody, welcome again to the Good Neighbor Podcast. My name is Bob Blasey and typically we're always coming from Pennsylvania, which is where the Good Neighbor Podcast is coming from today, and we call it Delco. Those of you around the country have heard of Delco at Delaware County, pennsylvania, and we lovingly refer to it as Delco. But today we have a great surprise Note to self. Here we're going beyond Delco and we're going to be speaking today to some business owners real good neighbors, good neighbor business owners from note to self wellness, and it's just outside of the Delaware County area, heading towards Philadelphia, and we'll talk about that some more. But for right now let me bring these two owners of note to self wellness to the stage we have here today Kelly Hughes and Pierre Derrickson. Welcome, ladies, to the podcast.

Speaker 3

Hi Bob, hi there, thanks for having us.

Speaker 2

It's great to have you because you know, as many of our listeners know and they listen to the Good Neighbor podcast often it's often about good neighbor businesses in the community that are mostly related to homes and home repairs or things that you buy, and retail shops. This is really something that is important because it's about wellness. Now our listeners may not yet quite know to what degree wellness that both Kelly and Pierre take care of, and we're going to let the ladies explain this. What Note to Self Wellness is? I know it to be a collective of kind of luxury holistic wellness services that you'd find at kind of a wellness spa. But, ladies, this can cover a lot of things. So, specifically, what services is the Note to Self Wellness spa delivering today? Why don't we ask Kelly to start?

Speaker 3

Okay, thank you again, bob. We're excited to be on this podcast and to let the community know about all of our offerings at Note to Self. We are a holistic spa. We offer skincare, acupuncture, massage and some other clean beauty services and a full apothecary of products. We do skincare, makeup waxing, brow shaping and we have a really large selection of beautifully curated clean beauty skincare products.

Speaker 2

Kelly. Is that something, then, that you yourself would be delivering those services as a licensed? What do they call that? Esthetician?

Speaker 3

I do services. Yes, so we have about 12 technicians. So we have estheticians who do skincare, and then we have massage therapists, and then we also have acupuncturists. Well, that's what.

Speaker 2

I heard earlier in a review that your partner here, pierre, you are the certified acupuncture specialist, correct? Is that the right word, specialist or acupuncture services, as well as massage and skincare from a traditional Chinese medicine perspective.

Speaker 2

So I can see from a holistic perspective that we aren't really starting to cover the collective here. We're talking about wellness, not just in how you feel about yourself, really, I guess, maybe because of how you look and how you want to look but also how you feel inside, how you're feeling, and that comes to things like pain or relaxation. If we talk about acupuncture, pierre, in that capacity, most of us who have never had acupuncture would think of it primarily to relieve pain. So if we try to come off of that subject and say, and what else Start with that, what would the person be subscribing to acupuncture for, if not to specifically relieve pain?

Speaker 4

That is a great question. So we like to think acupuncture's superpower is balance, and creating balance in the body is really creating wellness, and so we can approach problems that people are having in their lives from a Chinese medicine perspective about creating balance, and that is for anything that is made worse with stress. Acupuncture is known to really help balance the autonomic nervous system and which controls our breathing and our you know all of our stress organs that are right our nervous system that's related to stress.

Speaker 4

So any condition that is made worse with stress, acupuncture can help, and that includes physical pain and also things like acne yeah, things like acne. You know, we really like to approach any imbalance that we see for anybody who comes in.

Speaker 2

Well, that's interesting because someone might come in because they want to have some cosmetic benefit with their brows or hair removal or facials.

Speaker 2

Right, as I understand that you would do from a holistic perspective when it comes to skincare.

Speaker 2

But at the same time, that person is feeling better when they walk out the door because of how they look, but maybe not inside as much, and so I would imagine that you're teaching your clients how to avail themselves to other services. Maybe the ones that come in for acupuncture you say, hey, we can fix those eyebrows for you. And maybe, in reverse, the ones that come in for a facial are all complaining about how their day's going and, pierre, you probably know that some massage or some acupuncture would be good for them. So this is interesting how you're functioning as specialists in your respective categories and all of your other clinic staff, but I'll bet that there's a lot of self-education when they attend and have services. But as really owners of a business, you have a mission that you're actually teaching people how to become well through the services that you provide. Kelly, do you want to speak to that at all from a perspective of how people who are new clients need to be educated a bit to the benefits that your services can bring to them.

Speaker 3

Sure, that is really a poignant part of our business that we really love to empower our clients and educate people on the various types of wellness treatments, wellness services that we offer the clean beauty. That is our mission, that is why we have the business that we offer the clean beauty. That is our mission, that is why we have the business that we have. And going back to your point of the services kind of overlap and layer, so people come in and might do a scalp treatment, they might do waxing, they want to know about some new products, they get a Chinese medicine massage, they get acupuncture. I mean so on and so forth.

Speaker 3

People just keep coming back and layering these different services because they all really complement and work together and support the entire body inside and out. And that's where keep going back to peer doing acupuncture. Acupuncture does help hair growth. Acupuncture does help with the complexion and giving somebody a more youthful appearance, giving somebody beautiful complexion. So the facial acupuncture and a facial treatment go hand in hand. And that is where we come in and say this is why these are the reasons.

Speaker 4

But if I could also interject, we also really like to build a relationship with our clients and really ensure that they, you know, when they walk out of Note to Self, another service or another treatment in at note to self would help them. We really are all about making our clients as healthy and happy and beautiful as they can be.

Speaker 2

Ladies, we can hear it in your voices. It's wonderful. There's not just a mission in your work, there's a real peacefulness and I would imagine it's because of your own note to self about your own wellness. You're probably availing yourself to your own services, which is smart. We're talking today to the two owners of Note to Self Wellness, which is a business that is in the Philadelphia area. It's in the neighborhood known as Fishtown, in kind of the gentrified section of Philadelphia. It's kind of an upscale neighborhood where there are great restaurants and we now know that there's a great collective of luxury holistic spa services at Note to Self Wellness and you can see them on the web at notetoselfwellnesscom.

Speaker 2

We're talking to these owners, kelly Hughes and also Pierre Derrickson. The two owners the ladies have come to the Good Neighbor podcast today because as good businesswomen, they are good neighbors to their own clients. You heard mission in the voice and we hear services that are related to both skincare and massage and therapies and facials and brow work and stuff. If we were to say, kelly, what would, what would your spa be looking at for the next futures? Or the other products? Are there retail products that you're bringing in to your clients to sell to them, or are there other services that you're looking at bringing in through your staff and your affiliated wellness professionals?

Speaker 3

We have a large apothecary. We are always looking to expand the apothecary with more organic, more natural, more quality, top tier ingredients and always clean beauty and, as far as the services, we are open to things that will complement what we already offer. Kind of the backbone of our, our spa is luxury, holistic wellness, so anything that's going to complement that mission and provide more in the bigger picture for our clients.

Speaker 2

And we use the word luxury to, I think, caring for ourselves, which really shouldn't be a luxury, but we need to have a note to self, to take care of self, and that's really where the luxury status is.

Speaker 2

Pierre, I was curious to know. In the world of acupuncture, some people are starting to find that their own health insurance will fund acupuncture, out-of-network services or whatever. Can you speak to that at all? Are you ever recommending to your clients who are a little bit I don't know if I need to do this or not, but why not take advantage of your out-of-network insurance benefits?

Speaker 4

other insurance providers and it really comes in as a convenience for a lot of people to go through their insurance for-.

Speaker 2

I bet. I bet it makes them feel like they can have a little more budget to take care of the facials or the brow you know they can't use insurance for. May I ask this if people are coming for services that they think they need and then they're also learning of other services that they can gain, do you find that? Do you find that they're coming back often and do you find that they're referring their friends? Is there, is there really proof in concept, because my, my feeling is that this is through individual referrals mostly that I have felt far better since I've been doing this or that kind of thing. Tell us a little bit about how your own clients are. They're your biggest fans.

Speaker 4

Well, it's really interesting that you know the name of your podcast is good neighbor, because we really consider ourselves neighbors in the community, that you know the name of your podcast is Good Neighbor because we really consider ourselves neighbors in the community and we really like to create relationships with our neighbors and very often friendships, and, you know, relationships that continue on and extend out and we really have integrity for, you know, the wellness of our people.

Speaker 2

Yeah, it's important and I can hear it. Ladies, you are good neighbor businesses for sure, and I can imagine you know down in Fishtown. Up in Fishtown, where that's the Northern Liberty section of Philadelphia up a little more north those of you who are familiar with Philadelphia it's a great neighborhood and the retail merchants there all kind of stick together to each other. They're building a wonderful business community up there in that Fishtown section. A lot of youthful families moving in, and I can imagine that it's the only thing better than having great restaurants and wanting to go back to those great restaurants is meeting people like yourselves who actually can provide services that are really making everyone feel well about themselves. It's a great note to self Remember to take care of yourself.

Speaker 2

We're going to ask you for two tips one for ladies that have children and maybe are not giving themselves enough time what would be your advice? And the other one is for men who would never think to come to your luxury holistic wellness spa. The collective includes men, I'm sure. So which one, kelly, would you like to take? The first one there about the men.

Speaker 3

OK, well, I'm going to take the one about the men. Okay, well, I'm going to take the one about the women.

Speaker 2

Okay, good, flip it over, We'll go, we'll let you switch. We'll talk about the moms.

Speaker 3

I think, for being a mother myself, and I always encourage my clients to take the time to make it enjoyable to be well, to make it enjoyable to participate in skincare, to make your vanity, set up your products. Do what you can to make the time for yourself, even if your kids are around. Incorporate it into your lifestyle. Don't make it a chore. Make it a pleasure.

Speaker 2

Absolutely. And, pierre, what would be your advice to the men that you're seeing? You're meeting there in the neighborhood and you know that you can bring something into their life? How do you introduce them to the idea of come on into the wellness center?

Speaker 4

Yeah, often it's the first step that's the hardest. And once they get here, especially for men, once they get here, especially for men, once they come in and they realize that wellness is not a luxury, it's a necessity too. We all have to take care of our bodies, we need to take care of ourselves in order to take care of other people, and so once they realize or get a taste of it if they don't have it in their lives already, it's often a very natural thing to make it a recurring habit of creating balance and happiness and health.

Speaker 2

That's the invitation right there.

Speaker 3

We have a very neutral space that allows for anybody to come in, and we do have a lot of men. We really pride ourselves on it. It's just a comfortable, peaceful environment.
