Junk Gladiators

Speaker 1

Hello, delco. This is Michael Barkan, welcoming you to the Good Neighbor Podcast, where fans of local businesses and their neighbors come together. It's my pleasure once again to introduce my friend and neighbor, our host Bob Blasey.

Speaker 2

Hello everybody and welcome to the Good Neighbor Podcast. Thank you, michael Barkan. My name is Bob Blasey and we're coming to you today from Delaware County, pennsylvania. We call it DELCO, short form of Delaware County, and it's a real kind of a vibe that goes on. People know it here and they know it in the surrounding Philadelphia counties.

Speaker 2

It's a kind of a feeling, it's a kind of an attitude, but it's also kind of a cool thing that we DELCO folks get and the people beyond get. It's actually becoming kind of an attitude, but it's also kind of a cool thing that we Delco folks get and the people beyond get. It's actually becoming kind of a nationally known thing Delco If you Google it, google Delco. And today I'm really excited because as we bring on these businesses to talk on the Good Neighbor podcast, they're good neighbor businesses. Today we have one who has Delco in their name and it's a cool name too. It's a business that well, the cool name is Junk Gladiators and to me when you hear that Junk Gladiators, delco or something, I just can't help but think it's almost like a wrestling name here they are.

Speaker 2

Junk Gladiators. Let me introduce to the stage the owner of Junk Gladiators, delco David Daniels. David, welcome to the Good Neighbor Podcast, hi Bahat.

Speaker 3

Thanks for having me.

Speaker 2

Well, it's great, and David, you know, I guess, to be, you know, a person that's taking junk away. You kind of have to be a gladiator, you know, get in that ring and get the job done and come out because it's junk. Now we call it junk removal, but there's oftentimes a lot more to junk removal and we're going to talk about that so the listeners can learn what Junk Gladiators is all about. But with the name in it, it kind of implies that you take away junk. Give us a little understanding, if I'm correct about that, so we can start the episode with the listeners understanding, kind of, what Junk Gladiators is. And then I have some real specific questions for you.

Speaker 3

OK, well, what we do, bob? We're a local junk removal company where there's different circumstances where people need things removed, whether it's clearing out their home or getting the shed demolished and removed. They're doing some type of home improvements, they need construction debris removed, so we just come in, they point to it, we get it away.

Speaker 2

But so you mentioned even a surprise right there. I would not have thought to ask but a demo. I mean, some people have things that they need removed but they're too big to go through a door jam and it must have been built in the room or something construction stuff. But there it's a great example a shed. A lot of people have a shed and they're buying a new shed or whatever, but the shed companies want to charge a pretty specific cost to take that shed away. Can your guys come in and take that thing down quick and put it in your truck?

Speaker 3

and get rid of it for a cheaper cost. We definitely do. Sheds, hot tubs, a lot of things that people won't remove. We come in and get it out.

Speaker 2

Because it's got to go. And the reason it's got to go is for multiple reasons. I would think, just being a homeowner myself, that you want to use the space differently or you're going to get a new one of the same thing. But half the battle is, you know, getting the old one out, and so there's those reasons. And then of course there's, you know, just years and years of junk that's piled up and you're not even worth taking to the, to the Goodwill store or something. Tell us, when you are having calls, what are the top three or four reasons? And we take that one about the shed out. You have to have something demolished and taken away. But I'm sure there are people that are someone's passed away or they're moving or there's just this like hoarder situation or something. But what would be like the top four or five that are the reasons why you're getting calls reasons why you're getting calls.

Speaker 3

Okay, well, we get a lot of customers with their hired contractors to do something, but they don't offer the service of actually removing their debris after they've repaired someone's deck or whatever the case may be. Also, we get a lot of realtors who own a lot of properties. So the last tenant left couches or any type of things in the home that they need cleaned out so they can put the home back on the market. So we get a lot of that and, unfortunately, we get a lot of people that's passed away and relatives need to get their house cleaned out also.

Speaker 2

Yeah, I would think that is a big one because sometimes when you're living in other parts of the country and you know you have to come in and take care of a situation, your parents say, or aunts or uncles, and you know the task has fallen to you, there may be some things that families want, some heirlooms, but many times it's ancient stuff and you know you can only get so many people in the neighborhood to come in and pick and say what you want, but at some point that house has to be emptied. So you need strength and you need a truck, you know. So you have the truck and we'll talk a little bit about what that process is when you come to a site For the listener's benefit. We're talking to one of the strongest kind of junk removal companies, junk Gladiators and they operate in different states and different parts of Pennsylvania, but specifically in Delaware County you can get a chance to see Junk Gladiators. Junk Removal with Ease is the slogan that they have.

Speaker 2

We're talking to the owner here of the Delaware County Group, david Daniels. David, if you would help me understand a little bit, when I call and you hear what the job is, at that point Are you kind of bringing more or less workers to do the heavy lifting part of this job.

Speaker 3

It kind of depends on how big the job is and what it takes to get it done. As you mentioned, we have different branches, so if their job is pretty big, we all can come together to get the job done.

Speaker 2

So no, job is too big and no job is too small.

Speaker 3

Correct, we do commercial and we do resident Right.

Speaker 2

Well, one thing that I did not think of and it's important because we have a lot of businesses listening to the Good Neighbor podcast to think that contractors themselves who will be doing work, but for them to pay and use that contractor time to clean up and remove stuff that has to be ripped off walls and that kind of junk but they'll call you. So a lot of your clients aren't just homeowners or business owners as well.

Speaker 3

Right, Correct. I work with a couple of different contractors who just don't want to stop what they're doing. They just want the stuff out so they can continue to do what they do. So that's where we come in and provide that manpower to get that stuff out of there so they can finish doing their job, what they're paid to do.

Speaker 2

Well, when you can satisfy contractors, they themselves become great referrals, part persons. But, more importantly, if a contractor is calling this contractor junk gladiators, well, you know they can be trusted and you can know that they've been used in the past and they're continued to use. So homeowners think strongly about junk gladiators here in the Delaware County, pennsylvania area and beyond. We're talking with the owner, david Daniels, who is you can. You can get a chance to even talk to David, who kindly suggested to us that he will take your calls. You can call directly at 610-795-5865. Or, if you want to look at the website, is, as the name implies, junk gladiators junk gladiatorscom. David, when realtors are involved in this situation, I would think that realtors are referring to you. Are you, is your client the realtor, or is your client the owner of the property?

Speaker 3

We get both. It kind of depends if the owner of the property has put the realtor in charge of outsourcing or whatever. We speak with the realtor but sometimes it's the owner, sometimes it's the realtor and we get it done.

Speaker 2

Right. Well, now when we talk about getting it done and junk and it really let's just label it as things nobody wants or things that people want removed, I have to think, david, that there's jobs where they want you to come in and get rid of this because they don't want to touch it. There might be some, you know, asbestos, or there might be some sharp objects or something that's like this is let's, let's bring in a professional. Are those jobs? Do you have to kind of really step up in a different manner in certain jobs, because of fluids or because of powders or because they're just sharp nails, and is it? Is it just a matter of having good common sense to pick this stuff and get rid of it, or do you have to kind of inspect what you're getting rid of, and does that matter where you take it?

Speaker 3

Well, we, there are stipulations of things that the landfills do not accept as far as maybe like flammables and things of that nature, but other than that, it's kind of just paying attention to what you're removing and taking it where it needs to go.

Speaker 2

Right and I want to ask a little bit about the cost. But I don't really want to know prices specifically, I would like to know what builds the cost. I mean, I myself have junk I think everybody listening to us has junk and the question would become is this is this better than doing one of those things you see in Lowe's or Home Depot's where you kind of, you know, get a big, giant bag and then you buy the bag and then you call the service to come get the bag and pay more. Is it that simple? Or is it kind of like just tell us what you have and we'll come get it and then we'll give you the price when we get there and see how long it takes?

Speaker 2

Because with pricing, with consideration of should I do this myself or call a specialist, it's all about the cost and I would like to hear a little bit, not dollars, but like is it reasonable to use a service like yours Because you don't want to do it yourself? Get professionals, or at least it's done and it's done today. I think that, like you would not want to have your own lawyer Sometimes, you don't want to do your own heavy lifting because you can even get hurt. Tell us a little bit about what's going on in the minds of the people after they actually use your service, Like I'm really glad I called you and I would think you get a lot of referrals because of that.

Speaker 3

Well, we are a locally owned small business, and so that's one of the reasons my partner, danny Hill, started Junk Gladiators because he needed the actual service himself. But he realized that calling the big brands sometimes they aren't as reasonable as a locally owned company, and so that's where we come in.

Speaker 2

Our prices seem to be more reasonable, and with the customers and reasonable meaning, because you don't have those big company costs that you have to back up. In your case it's bringing manpower, a truck, you're taking it away, you're taking it to a dump. You're having costs, I guess, to get rid of it. Do you ever have any profit that comes from it? Are you able to kind of remarket some of the things you pick up? Are you able to find treasures once in a while?

Speaker 3

Well, it all kind of depends. We try to donate what we can donate, to cut down on the trash at the landfill, so, but that's kind of difficult because they're not always accepting what we need to donate. So in that case we have to dump it, but and also I can't keep everything else I'll need junk removal. So it kind of depends.

Speaker 2

I just was wondering whether or not, like our listeners might think, do some of these junk removal companies that are out there are? They? Do they have their own thrift shop or their own store that they know this is good stuff here? Let me just. Let me just see if people want to come and buy it, or is it all have to go to the landfill?

Speaker 3

That's actually one of the things me and my partner has been discussing is opening up a thrift shop that we can repurpose a lot of this stuff that we can't donate, because some of it is good still, but I can't just take it home.

Speaker 2

My wife won't allow that Well, and not only that, but some people just have to get the item out off the property, out of the house, because the home is being sold or because you know it's just the room has to be repurposed for another purpose and we don't want to worry about what it could bring If we were to sell this. You have it, come, take it. And that isn't really. I guess people probably try to negotiate with you and say, well, look, you're taking this away, you can have it. I mean, you're going to get some money for that. We don't want it, but really that can't come into play too much in what you're doing. It's really the cost of just getting it out.

Speaker 3

Exactly. There will be a cost, regardless, because there's. I can't say I can't always sell, that's not always the case and I can't gamble that it will be the case. So I have to charge. We are a business.

Speaker 2

So yeah, and you are a business that performs a noble service here, because everybody knows what junk is, or everybody knows that their life is cluttered and they want to get rid of things. My wife has a great saying. She says if we haven't used it in the last year and a half or it hasn't brought us joy lately, get rid of it.

Speaker 2

Too many things in our life can just kind of clutter up the. I guess you know the internal thinking and and uh. And having a clean desk or having a clean space, you know is is really what does us renewed thinking about. You know our life and what we want to do, so you're really performing a great service here. We're talking to David Daniels, who is the local junk gladiator for Delaware County. He and his team their line that they like to always tell their customers it's junk removal with ease, because they're the ones doing it, not you. If you have a need that you need to get rid of junk in your house or some kind of contractor waste or things that you're trying to just take care of a yard that has an old hot tub or a shed or something large that is going to get rid of it, they're the company to call. They're the gladiators that you know. Just take over and they leave with what you don't want. Weight is no object, david.

Speaker 3

Size is no object, it's taken into consideration, but as our trucks if you've seen them there are the largest trucks in the area, at least about 20, 25 percent bigger than all the competitors. So wow, big, heavy trucks, yes. So it holds a lot, it carries a lot, and if it needs to be broken down, and we can do that and put it on piece by piece.

Speaker 2

You can learn more about the Junk Gladiators by going to their website. It's junkgladiatorscom, and David Daniels is the Delaware County, pennsylvania Delco branded junk specialist really the Junk Gladiator, as we like to call them and if you'd like to reach David directly, you can do so by email or by telephone. David's email is got junk Delco at Gmail dot com and his direct phone number is six one zero seven nine five, five, eight six five, david. Before we end the program today, I do want to say the junk gladiators, while it might seem like it's a junk business, it really is performing a noble service, because when people need it taken away, they need it taken away.

Good Neighbor Team Invitation

Speaker 2

Nobody has really familiarity with dumps. How do we get something to go to a dump? And so you're serving as the intermediary for businesses, for homeowners, and you're really kind of making their life easier. Nicer, you're fulfilling a job that either people can't do, because you need strong strength to be able to get this junk out of here, and you're also kind of beautifying a property. And for those who hate to see things taken to a dump, that's what dumps are for they're covered over and things are eventually built on top of them, I think. But, david, it's a noble service that you're doing and what a great name. Junk Gladiators, thank you for being a really good neighbor business to our community here in Delaware County.
