Revolutionizing Dog Grooming With ScentHound
Speaker 1Hello, delco. This is Michael Barkan, welcoming you to the Good Neighbor Podcast, where fans of local businesses and their neighbors come together. It's my pleasure once again to introduce my friend and neighbor, our host Bob Lacey.
Speaker 2Well, thank you, michael Barkan, for that introduction. Today, for another episode of the Good Neighbor Podcast, we're coming to you from Delaware County, pennsylvania, which is in the tri-state area of Pennsylvania, the eastern side. We're just above the state of Delaware, we're next to the state of New Jersey and we're just below the city of Philadelphia. Delaware County, lovingly referred to as Delco, and we call it Delco and Beyond because we take the vibe, the Delco vibe beyond and a lot of people know there is a vibe in Delco One of its vibe aspects is really the businesses that are in Delco and around the counties of Delaware County. Today we're very happy to bring a new good neighbor business to you and bring to the stage the CEO of a business called ScentHound.
Speaker 2Let me introduce Lisa Lasley Sanders. Lisa, welcome to the program. Hi, bob, Thanks for having me on. I'm so happy to be here. Well, it's great to have you because, well, so many people love pets and I love dogs you obviously love dogs. The business is related to dogs. It's ScentHound, and so the listeners out there right now are wondering well, scenthound, what could that be? They're thinking it might have something to do with hunting, or maybe it has something to do with, you know, boarding dogs or something like that, but tell us, as a franchise system, which is what ScentHound is, and you being the franchise system person in the Philadelphia area here, what is the business that ScentHound is bringing to the marketplace.
Speaker 3That's a great question, bob so ScentHound. Bringing to the marketplace? That's a great question, bob so ScentHound. We are really revolutionizing the dog grooming industry. Our focus is on the basic hygiene that all dogs need. 80% of dogs do not need grooming, but every single dog needs basic routine hygiene care. So what do I mean by that? Every single dog needs a bath, they need their ears cleaned, they need their teeth brushed and they need their nails their nails clipped on a on a specific routine basis. And so at SendTown our mission is to really educate pet parents on that need and really to deliver that service to pet parents.
Speaker 2Well it's, it's great, but I heard that term several times and it's I think it's getting into our lexicon a lot more these days pet parents. And it's because we love our pets so much and maybe you know we don't have kids yet or we're a couple that you know is looking to future have kids, or single people that want to have company. But we we see the way our pets love us and it's easy to think of us because we're providing for them as their parent. So how wonderful it is that even the pet parent industry has got a new support system. You mentioned that you do grooming but not grooming maybe the way that other groomers do grooming. I'm trying to understand what that would mean and maybe it helps to our audience to listen again to your answer. When it comes to grooming, do you mean that you're doing the basic kind of grooming or just not grooming certain types of dogs or certain types of styles of haircuts?
Speaker 3We do it all. So we are a monthly routine care service. So our goal is to ensure that all of our pet parents bring their dogs in on a monthly basis to get their routine basic hygiene care and then, when that's required, if they need any grooming, if they need any additional treatment a plaque reduction treatment, a de-shedding treatment, potentially a problem skin treatment we also have all of those services available for them as they require it. So what we're doing now is we're decoupling a lot of the grooming services and wellness and hygiene services and allowing our pet parents to get what they need when they need it.
Speaker 2And I think the thing that's making this different is that it's kind of an a la carte services of of all types of grooming, but you, you're, you're a member of of Sennhound. As you become a member, you have rights. What? On a on a monthly basis, or or is it as?
Speaker 3Yes, bob. So as part of our endeavor to ensure really great access for pet parents, what we have is a monthly subscription where pet parents can join different plans that we have and they are able to have a specific level of services that they can get every month. So, for instance, if you become an Essentials Plus member, you'll be able to have access to our virtual vet, where you can go on to our proprietary app and talk to a vet about nutrition, diet, exercise. You'll also be able to bring your dog in every month to have our basic hygiene service, which is the double bath air cleaning, teeth brushing and nail clipping. So we have different membership options depending on the services that you require for your dog.
Speaker 2Sounds like something that I would be interested in, because my experience with, say, taking the dog to the groomer is that we're finally taking the dog to the groomer, the dog looks a mess or the nails are too long. But one of the things that holds me back from that why the dog always looks a mess, I guess, is that I'm, I'm, I'm, you know, paying a lot of money for all kinds of stuff at one time and then and then, maybe a week later, the dog's jumping in the mud or something. It sounds to me by this kind of membership program that if I had to, I could bring the dog back in a couple times in a month if I was jammed up by the dog getting so messed up again.
Speaker 3Absolutely. We have an unlimited plan where members can bring their dogs in as many times as they want in a month for any of our services. But, additionally, the great part of the membership option is it's really the commitment that pet parents are sort of doing for their dogs. You know, when we take on a dog, that's a responsibility and, just like our kids, you know, when I kid my daughter was smaller I would, you know, make sure she got in the bath every day, brush her teeth, brush her hair every day, and that's sort of the same sort of responsibility that we have for our pets. We really need to make sure that we're committing to giving them their basic hygiene on a monthly basis, and our subscription model allows pet parents the certainty of having a regular appointment that suits their schedule, as well as ensuring that their dogs are always being their wellness is being maintained.
Speaker 3Additionally, what's great about the service is you get an extra set of eyes on your dog. I know for me, when I'm out at work all day and I come home, I'm playing with my dog, we're having fun, and so maybe I'm not looking at them from a critical lens to really see if there's any skin issues, if there's any matting. And when you bring your dog into Sandtown, we do a six-point check on them. We assess their skin, their coat, their ears, their nails, their teeth and we check their glands. And we rate it on a scale of one to five, one being hey, we think that there's something that you should go to your vet and talk to them about, and five being everything is perfect and continue to do what you're doing. So not only do we do the routine hygiene care that all dogs need, but we also are a second set of eyes to ensure your dog's wellness.
Speaker 2That's needed because we love our dogs so much. But sometimes we're not honoring that commitment that we made to them in being a pet parent, a dog owner. And you're right, we play with them a lot, we walk them a lot, but are we really, are we really keeping our commitment to make sure that their nails are trimmed and their teeth are cleaned, or or their their hair is clean and trimmed appropriately? This does sound kind of like a dog spa, but it doesn't sound as ritzy and expensive. It sounds like it's very convenient and orderly and proper, like a kind of a, like a weekly um cleanup session, in a way to kind of like let our dog um always be looking their their best version of themselves, because they're clean and combed, maybe trimmed, and, uh, you know, you're not hearing their nails on the ground and maybe they're not smelling, you know.
Speaker 2And so it sounds like a very new kind of concept, but really an old responsibility, and ScentHound is bringing it to the marketplace in a way that it's never been done before. We're talking to one of the ScentHound franchise owners, lisa Lasley Sanders, who is really, I guess, scenthound is new to the Philadelphia area and we have a ScentHound location that Lisa operates in the King of Prussia Pennsylvania area, which is near the King of Prussia Mall that most everyone has heard about. That's in Montgomery County and again in the southeast corner of Pennsylvania. But, lisa, I understand that you're bringing your second Sennhound location to a new location in Newtown Square, pennsylvania.
Speaker 3Yes, and we're so excited to be coming to Newtown Square in Delaware County. We really love that part of the greater Philadelphia area and we're just excited to be there. Sennhound is a great brand, it's a great dog-centric business and we're really excited for the opportunity.
ScentHound Franchise Services and Benefits
Speaker 2Well, I think everybody should be excited. Who lives in the 10 or 15-minute area of King of Prussia or Newtown Square? There are probably other franchises that are already out there. How many ScentHound franchises around the country, Lisa?
Speaker 3There's over a hundred ScentHound franchises over the country.
Speaker 2Wow, if you want to find the ScentHound location that's closest to you. Let's give you the URL. The website is just as it sounds S houndcom. Scenthoundcom is where you'll find even Lisa Lasley Sanders' business listed for Newtown Square, pennsylvania, in Delaware County, and also her location in King of Prussia, which is Montgomery County, king of Prussia, pennsylvania. Lisa, let me ask another question regarding the additional services, because you really have something here where, rather than necessarily upselling to additional services your technicians and your pet lovers that are helping your dog and say, on a weekly basis or monthly basis, looking at your dog, they might stumble into something that says look this, this hair, uh, we can't fix. This needs to be, this needs to be. You know, really done differently, it's going to cause the dog to get shaved down or something like that. But in other words, when you're when you're in need of something special, the idea is you can pay for it as you go. It's not necessarily in the costs of the lower level memberships, right?
Speaker 3That's correct. So, as part of our process, what we do when we have our dogs come in for service, when we do the assessment, we are also making recommendations if we see something that needs to be resolved. For instance, if we're seeing hot spots, we will recommend a problem skin treatment for that dog. If we're noticing there's plaque and yellowing on the teeth, we would recommend a plaque reduction treatment. Or, additionally, we have some at-home solutions that we will recommend that pet parents purchase to bring home and administer at home. So we're really looking for a robust and holistic solution for our pet parents to ensure that, you know, while we're doing what we can do in center, that we're also empowering and educating them to be able to, you know, do things at home as well to enhance their dog's health and wellness.
Speaker 2And I love that you mentioned there's a, there's a ScentHound app that can give guidance and even access to, you know, ScentHound kind of a veterinarian services that can give you advice when you're concerned about your dog, and it's available, you know, probably around the clock. The basic package to me is compelling because it's both bathing and cleaning their ears, which is really where a lot of the smelling comes from. In a dog that's very dirty, right, but cleaning their ears, clipping their nails, brushing their teeth, you know, and I'm imagining that that basic program even includes a little bit of a hair trimming right to get them looking right again, or does it?
Speaker 3Well, that's something that so paw trims, sanitary trims, any eyes and brows cleanups, those sorts of services can be added on when pet parents want to be to be frank, those services are probably required every other visit, uh, maybe every other month. So, rather than you know, including that into a base price, right, our base price is very, very economical, um and so, and that price includes the double bath, the air, air cleaning, the teeth brushing and the nail clipping, and then, as the as the pets dogs require it, they can add on a sanitary trim, they can add on a um paw pad trim, as the pet parents really see that it's required.
Speaker 2Yeah, and you know, if I had a membership where I could, you know, pay a little bit every month even when I'm not using the service, I'd be happy that when I have to use the service it's all paid for, because I find that that very large charge. When you go to a dog room and get everything done, it could be, you know, $120 or something by the time you're walking out the door. I think I'd rather spend a membership fee and know that when the dog's in need of some cleaning up, take them over, take them over every month, and then it's not as bad of a problem when they do need extra help, right?
Speaker 3Absolutely, and a lot of our pet parents are really finding that over the course of the year, they're spending a lot less because they're only paying for what they need when they need it.
Speaker 2That's perfect. That. What a great way of helping pet parents, especially young pet parents that aren't parents of children even yet, where they're watching every penny, but they've got a dog and they need to take care of them. It sounds like it's both a great hygiene for a pet that's much loved, but also economical a new way of taking care of our loved pets. Lisa, it has been wonderful that you've been able to join us and share this kind of new way of pet care for dogs.
Speaker 2The business is called ScentHound and they're in King of Prussia on Allendale Road, 150 Allendale Road in King of Prussia, and Lisa's newest location is in Newtown Square, 3511 Westchester Pike in Newtown Square and if you'd like to give the business a call, you can reach them at 610-621-4314. That'll ring through to ScentHound, you can be talking with a technician and maybe Lisa herself, but if you'd like to visit the website, it's ScentHoundcom. Real easy to know and to learn about joining the care club at ScentHound. Lisa, thank you for bringing the service to our community. Thank you for being a dog lover and thank you for bringing the service to our community. Thank you for being a dog lover and thank you for helping pet parents.
