Gary Buchert: Revolutionizing Men's Consignment The G&G Unique Consignment Boutique

Discover a retail consignment store revolution happening just across the Delaware County line in this episode of the Good Neighbor Podcast. Listen to the fascinating conversation with Gary Buchert, founder and owner of the G&G Unique Consignment Boutique in Malvern, Pennsylvania. You'll hear that what began as a grandfather's entrepreneurial vision has blossomed into an eight-year success story that's transforming how men shop for quality clothing and man cave collectibles.

Named for the two G's (Gary himself, and his 11-year-old grandson Graham), Gary has carved out a unique niche in the consignment world by focusing exclusively on men's apparel and accessories. Not a thrift store of donated items, G&G meticulously curates through consignments, high-quality shirts, shoes, jackets and accessories that reflect the refined tastes of Philadelphia's Main Line community. As Gary explains to host Bob Blaisse, the motto at G&G is, "It's all about value."

Come to understand how this boutique's appeal extends far beyond men’s clothing and accessories. Sports enthusiasts and collectors flock to G&G for memorabilia, team jerseys and distinctive décor for man caves and dorm rooms. They employ an innovative approach to consignment services within a 20-mile radius, allowing for the store owner to personally visit consignors' homes to select items, sparing them the hassle of transporting them. It also ensures that his boutique only consigns sellable merchandise, which makes it to his shop floor under a tech-forward consignment system that keeps sellers informed about their items' status, while offering flexible options for unsold merchandise.

Whether you're searching for the perfect gift for the man who "doesn't need anything" or looking to consign quality items from your own closet, G&G Unique Consignment Boutique offers an experience unlike any other in the Mainline region of Philadelphia.

Speaker 1

Thank you, Michael Barkan, for that introduction and everybody, welcome again to another episode of the Good Neighbor Podcast. My name is Bob Blasey and we're coming to you from Pennsylvania here on the east coast of the United States Not the furthest east, because that's New Jersey for us, but we're coming to you from the most southeastern corner of Pennsylvania, just above the state of Delaware and just west of the state of New Jersey. Philadelphia is right to the north of us. We're in Delaware County, which we lovingly refer to as DELCO in its abbreviated form, and we love that DELCO vibe. And if you Google that D-E-L-C-O. Delco, Pennsylvania, you'll get a lot and you'll learn a lot about where we're coming from today.

Introducing G&G Unique Consignment Boutique

Speaker 2

But we call it DELCO and Beyond because DELCO reaches out to the world and this Good Neighbor podcast is really meant to bring good neighbor businesses to the understanding of people in Delaware County, Pennsylvania, but also beyond. And today we're happy to just go right over the border of Delaware County into Chester County, into actually Malvern, Pennsylvania, and introduce to you a wonderful business. But this is unique, Ladies, this is for men, Men, this is to tell your ladies about to come out to the G&G Unique Consignment Boutique. It's really the consignment shop for men. But let me bring to the stage the founder and the owner of G&G Unique Consignment Boutique, Mr Gary Buecher. Gary, welcome to the program.

Speaker 3

Hi Bob, I appreciate you having me on. I'm looking forward to it.

Speaker 2

Well, gary, I have to tell the listeners that this is one of those rare times where the host has actually been to the business. I found you because I like stopping by consignment shops, and when I saw your shop, which is located at 120 East King Street in Malvern, the main street in downtown Malvern Borough I was really impressed, because you don't often see a consignment shop or a boutique that's squarely devoted to men, and when we're on the Philadelphia main line, I know that that's going to mean some very interesting, good clothing and unique items. Tell me a little bit about the G&G Consignment Boutique, gary, and I've got to think one of those G's is Gary.

Speaker 3

Who's the other G? Yes, one is Gary and the other is Graham, who is my 11-year-old grandson. He's part of the name. As I said, it's Gary and Graham. That's the G&G Bob. I basically do it for him and he's a big help on the weekends, so he's proud to have it and we're looking forward to going on. For a long time we've been we've been here since 2017. We started the business, so we're in our eighth year now, or?

How Consignment Business Works

Speaker 2

well, that's wonderful gary and and a great way to for a grandpop and a grandson to spend some enjoyable time in these years. Tell me which came first the idea for a men's shop or the idea for a consignment shop.

Speaker 3

Yes, bob. Well, you asked a good question there and actually I wanted to do something in the consignment area, as I said before, because I just haven't seen any anywhere in the area or surrounding areas anywhere in the area or surrounding areas. Also, one of the good things about a consignment shop is that you can start a business and you really don't have to pay for inventory. Most of it is brought in by the customers and if you choose to buy if I choose to buy things I will Like in the sports, I buy some memorabilia and things. So for consignment, really, this helped the listeners understand that some listeners may not fully get it when you're for consignment.

Speaker 2

Really, this helped the listeners understand that some listeners may not fully get it when you're a consignment shop. As you mentioned, the inventory comes from people who want to sell their equipment or clothing items, and so you're able to bring a lot of unique items that are specific to men I guess Men's clothing. That's what it's all about. It's a unique consignment boutique for men and you're able to have people bring items that you offer for sale and they get paid money and you get a percentage of that. Isn't that initially how the consignment works?

Speaker 3

I review the clothing number one to make sure it is in very good shape. If it's not, we won't accept it. Also, style is a little bit important at the time, not as much as a woman's would be, but I do look at the styles and I can sign them for eight weeks. At the end of eight weeks, the customer gets 40% of what's sold and the store gets 60. That's basically how it works.

Product Selection and Value Philosophy

Speaker 2

That's a great opportunity for savings. I have to say, gary, a little personal endorsement this time. I don't usually do this on these episodes but, having been to the shop and being someone that has been in consignment shops a lot over the years, the product is just brilliant. I mean there's no junk in your shop. The product is just brilliant. I mean there's no junk in your shop. The clothing is especially the shirts are I don't know how to explain it, but let's call it Philadelphia mainline kind of quality. These are high quality from not only a style perspective but brand manufacturer perspective, and the upkeep of the clothing is a lot of it's new. Some of it was still with tags. Clothing is a lot of it's new. Some of it was still with tags, and so not just shirts, but you have other kinds of men's apparel and other knickknackery and little items that have interest to men. Give us an idea when people come into the G&G Unique Consignment Boutique in Malvern, pennsylvania, what kind of men's items do they suddenly see besides clothing?

Speaker 3

Well, besides clothing, you're looking for a lot of the accessories. It could be a tie, it could be cufflinks. We also sell shoes. It could be a hat, a top coat, a lightweight jacket. We basically have just about everything.

Speaker 3

As you know, the thing in the consignment store is people come in and they look, and they look for quality and they look for a good price, and our motto here at G&G is look, it's all about value. You pick an article out and you see the price and my question to the customer would be do you see value in this for this price? If he says no, then I suggest he doesn't purchase it. But nine times out of 10, it's a very good value and they like it. And that's where we've been successful. And we've been successful on repeat business.

Speaker 3

We get a lot of business from way out of the area. It's amazing, Most of it's word of mouth, but customers do come back and come back as, like I said, we've been here now this is our eighth year and we've been successful in that area. But I also have to mention the sports memorabilia area, which is very successful for us. We have a lot of old pictures of sports, old pictures of movies. We do have new jerseys for the Philadelphia local teams. All the professionals and the colleges in the area and a lot of the youngsters love this stuff and they also love the memorabilia so they can put it in their man cave or take it to college and put it in their dorm it is remarkable the quality of the equipment, the items, the apparel and also the knickknackery you called it there with man cave stuff.

Speaker 2

Look, I'm a dad and I'm a husband and I know that people in my own family struggle sometimes. Well, you know, what do you want for Christmas, dad? What do you want for your birthday? And I don't like to say what I want and I don't need anything. You know, I usually say I don't really need anything. Just, you know, be good and let's go out to dinner or something.

Speaker 2

But when someone is looking for a gift for a man and they don't know what to get them, this is the shop to visit, because G&G Unique Consignment Boutique in Malvern, pennsylvania, is a small boutique shop but it's dedicated to not just items for men, but it's really those catchy, eye-catching, you know, bit of eye candy kind of items, whether it's collectibles or whether it's signs for a man cave or unique pieces of jewelry, and certainly the clothing. I saw Western boots in there and that were just different, but again, not thrift shop stuff. Here we're talking about high quality clothing and items that are first consigned by people who know this is good stuff and would like to get paid for it. Gary's helping them do it. We're talking to Gary Buchert, who is the founder and the owner of G&G Unique Consignment Boutique and, as I mentioned earlier, they're located in the borough of Malvern, pennsylvania.

Speaker 2

We're out there kind of close to horse country in Chester County on the main street where there are many boutiques and shops on King Street in Malvern, pennsylvania and, by the way, you can look up G&G Unique Consignment Boutique through their Facebook page, which is simply, you know, go to facebookcom and look for G&G Consignment, g&g Consignment, and you'll land on their Facebook page. Gary, let me ask this If someone is listening to us from Delaware County and beyond, but you know within a half hour, and they are interested in consigning what they think are kind of good, good items and they want to get paid, what's the success rate? If someone brings clothing or jewelry or a wonderful kind of a Western hat or something that they know somebody is going to want this, does it usually sell within 30?

Mobile Service and Customer Technology

Speaker 3

days. Well, we, you know we have it. We have two months that it goes for. And, yes, I'd say probably people who bring articles in. They may not all sell, but as far as selling some of them, I'd say 80% of people do get some money from G&G as a result of bringing their clothing in.

Speaker 3

Also, something I'd like to mention here is you said about bringing the clothes in. Also, something I'd like to mention here is you said about bringing the clothes in, and one of the great things I think we do is a good idea is within a 20 mile radius of our store, I will come to your home, I will come to your business wherever you have these articles and what it does. Number one it saves the customer from bringing and lugging all the stuff in. Number two I can go through and pick and choose and, frankly, be very honest, because I don't want to take things in that I know are not going to sell. So this way I can take what I think will sell. The customer doesn't even have to leave their house and it's a pretty good service and I get a lot of calls for that.

Speaker 2

Well, that's great Mobile consignment. You told me when I had first met you and was in your shop that the consignors themselves actually get access to some technology, an app, where they can actually then see the items that are listed in the shop selling and know when they're sold. And you've taken consignment shops into the next level of technology to interact with your consignors yes, because our whole system here is a consignment system.

Speaker 3

Uh, and what it does? When people bring articles in, I answer them in the computer and upon completion I have their email, I send them list and on that list is every item that was brought in, the price of the item that I put on there, the start of the contract and then the date of the eight weeks when the contract is up. At the end of eight weeks, the customer has a decision to make. They can, number one, they can pick up the articles that did not sell. Number two, we can probably extend it if it's still in the season. Or number three, I can donate it for them to their choice, wherever they like to see it go, and I get them a tax deduction from the articles that we do donate.

Final Thoughts and Contact Information

Speaker 2

Again, that's another great service that you don't find at other consignment shops. And what you will not find but you will find at G&G is it's dedicated to items for men. It's been very unique. It was a unique experience for me to visit a store like this and then also to get a chance to hear more. If you'd like to talk to Gary Buechert, you can. I'm going to give out your phone number, gary, if you don't mind. This is the number of the shop it's 610-407-4577.

Speaker 2

And, as I mentioned, you can find G&G Unique Consignment Boutique on Facebook. Just search in Facebook G&G Consignment. You'll find their Facebook page. But visit them really in Malvern, pennsylvania, which is close to Delaware County and just down the road from the Philadelphia main line in Montgomery County. Come cross the border into Chester County and you'll find them in the borough of Malvern on the main street 120 East King Street in Malvern, pennsylvania. What a great business you have going there, gary Not only you, but to help your grandson develop into an entrepreneur through G&G. Couldn't be prouder. It's been great to get a chance to hear your story. What a great, unique, good business in our community. Congratulations and thank you for being a guest today on the Good Neighbor Podcast.
