Introduction to Good Neighbor Podcast
Speaker 1Michael Barkan, welcoming you to the Good Neighbor podcast, where fans of local businesses and their neighbors come together. It's my pleasure once again to introduce my friend and neighbor, our host Bob Lacey.
Speaker 2Michael Barkan. Thank you very much for that introduction to another episode of the Good Neighbor podcast today. My name is Bob Lasey, and everybody who's listening maybe for the first time let me just share with you that we're coming to you from the United States, pennsylvania, the southeast corner of Pennsylvania, in Delaware County, pennsylvania. We're just the county that's right above the state of Delaware, in the southeast corner of Pennsylvania, and just west of the state of New Jersey, across the Delaware River and just below the city of Philadelphia. So Delaware County, one of the state of New Jersey, across the Delaware River and just below the city of Philadelphia. So Delaware County, one of the 67 counties in Pennsylvania, lovingly referred to as Delco. It's got a great Delco vibe and this podcast really is intended to bring out that vibe through good neighbor businesses in our community, and that's what we do here today.
Speaker 2It's just a great pleasure for me to be able to introduce another good neighbor business and it's what we do here today. It's just a great pleasure for me to be able to introduce another good neighbor business and it's it's going to be fun. It's got a cute name. Let me. Let me introduce and bring to the stage the owner and the founder of a massage studio who is a licensed massage therapist Honey Hudgens. Honey, welcome to the program.
Speaker 3Thanks for having me today.
Meet Honey Hudgens, Licensed Massage Therapist
Speaker 2It's great to have you, honey because, well, first of all, let me just get the disclaimer right out of the program. Well, thanks for having me today. It's great to have you, honey because, well, first of all, let me just get the disclaimer right out of the way. I'm going to be referring to you as honey and I don't want anybody to be offended by that out there. That's honey's first name, her birth given name Honey Hudgins. You're the owner of a massage studio that you, I guess, lovingly call, with Honey, massage Studio. It's a little play on the words. With Honey, you are the licensed massage therapist, correct? Yes, let's start a little bit with that. First, honey, the difference between what we might think of as a masseur, masseuse or whatever it is, and a licensed massage, I think the operative word here is therapist.
Benefits and Types of Massage
Speaker 3Tell us a little bit about what you do as a profession. So the difference between a licensed massage therapist and a masseuse is the masseuse have like a negative connotation. Masseuse often do things that's not really appropriate and sometimes, or most of the time, they're not licensed. So as a massage therapist, we have to go to school and we have to get a certificate and a license in order to do what we do.
Speaker 2A lot of therapy, understanding too, that you're not just rubbing people's muscles you know what muscles to rub for what problems they're having right and exactly rubbing people's muscles you know what muscles to rub for what problems they're having right. And the therapy aspect of what a massage studio should be. You're right, there are some connotations sometimes with massage that we're not going to talk about here, because, even though it's with honey, we're really talking about the person who is the therapist and really it's kind of a therapy art. We'll talk about this, let's understand this. When somebody says I feel like I'm in need of a massage, or when somebody like you might say to somebody you're meeting, like you know you could do well by having a massage I mean, I'm a licensed massage therapist what's happening there? What is really to be relieved? What's to be relieved, what's to be gained? And and tell us a little bit about why you have the mission. You have to be a massage therapist.
Speaker 3So, um, I love helping people. I love healing people through my art, my craft. When people say I need a massage or I could use a massage, I'm seeing that they probably have a lot of stress that needs to be relieved. Or they're working hard, so they might be a little tighter than usual. Or they're working hard, so they might be a little tighter than usual. Or sometimes, like when dealing with grief and things like that, you might just need to take a load of and just like, really unwind a little bit.
Speaker 2And it can bring that relaxation and certainly with relaxation the muscle tenseness is gone and then, you know, the muscles not acting the way they're supposed to act or causing pain can go away. We're talking to the owner, the founder, of her own massage studio, with Honey Massage Studio. And you can look at this it's Relax With Honey. You know, is really the name of the studio right, or is that you go by with Honey Massage Studio? I'm trying to get the branding right.
Speaker 3Yes, I go by with Honey Massage Studio. I'm trying to get the branding right. Yeah, so I go by With Honey Massage Studio. It's just like a little extra sweetness, a little extra care and love to what I do. Well, we can hear it, we can certainly hear it in your voice, honey.
Speaker 2And for those of you who aren't living in the Delaware County area, honey is not one of these persons that maybe is a mobile therapist or come to my house or doing it on the side. This is her profession and she actually has a professional studio that's easily found in the Lawrence Park Shopping Center. It's one of those studios that are in the my Salon Suites, which I've seen a picture of and, wow, it's very nice, very private and it's very accessible off of Route 320 there, sproul Road in Broomwall, pennsylvania. Honey, can I ask this question, when people are aware of the benefits of massage and you have clients, I would imagine, who are coming regularly, how often does somebody come for a massage? Do their clients come twice a year, or do they come twice a month or twice a week?
Speaker 3So the standard is about once a month, just to like keep you on track and make sure that like we're really loosening up your problem areas and like just setting you off on a good path. Some people come more often. I have regulars that come once a week, and then I have regulars that come every few months, sometimes only on their birthday. So it really depends on what your body needs.
Massage Frequency and Gift Options
Speaker 2Well, I love that, because you mentioned the word birthday. It's like a gift to yourself to give what your body needs, and it might be a gift to the people around you too. We should mention that, probably, if you're one of those folks that I know my son sometimes struggle to say you know, I just don't know what to get dad he's, he'll say I don't need anything, I'll have everything I need, you know, go get. You know I don't know, get me a movie to the ticket to the movies or something. But but really that's a unique gift. To say, hey, it's something different, be like buying your dad a cigar or something. But if you feel like you have someone in your life who is stressed and you can't just keep saying to them you're stressed, you got to bring that stress down. Perhaps it's the best way to bring the stress down is to give them a gift of massage, and that's what Honey Hudgens does in her With Honey Massage Studio in Broomhole, pennsylvania.
Speaker 2If you'd like to talk to Honey, let me give out the phone number here and even an email address. The URL for the website, honey Studio is in Broomall, in the Lawrence Park Shopping Center, and you can look at her website beautiful website which is withhoneymassagestudiocom, or even space. I love that space domain but they're both working and just remember, with honeymassagestudiocom you can get to Honey's website. You can also look at the my Salon Suites website my Salon Suites in Broomwall, pennsylvania. You'll see Honey's services are listed there among the other salon artists, and what's really important is that it's very accessible. So there's no reason to really kind of wait to get a massage when you know you need one or when you're looking for a massage you can trust.
Speaker 2This is one that's already vetted by the my Salon Suites people and certainly here too, by the Good Neighbor podcast, honey. Can I ask one question that might be a little bit uncomfortable for you to have to talk about, because, well, prices can be, you know, based on hourly massage or a type of massage or maybe even somebody that comes in more often and such. But can I ask so that the listeners know how expensive is it? Certainly not something that's covered under insurance, but it's really an investment in yourself. What are your charges as a massage therapist?
Pricing and Services Explained
Speaker 3what are your charges as a massage therapist? So my prices start at 115 for 60 minutes Swedish and it goes up from there, but depending on what services you're getting or how long of the duration, Well, let's talk about that from services.
Speaker 2You mentioned the word Swedish. We've heard Swedish massage. Can you expand on that just a little bit? And then I noticed from your website that you do speak about massage time spent for things like body contouring or therapy or just a holistic healing and such. How do you know what type of massage to give to whom? And maybe you can speak a little bit to those different offerings that you have?
Speaker 3Yeah, I love this question. So the Swedish massage refers to a lighter touch. It's more of a relaxation massage. People who really don't have too many problems, people get it for their birthdays or like just to like unwind a little bit. I also have a therapeutic massage. That's when people have a little extra tension and I need to show more love too. So I just like really work on breaking up them knots. It's a mixture of a deep tissue and a Swedish. Sometimes I use extra tools like hot stones, bamboo, different things like that, just to really like break up the problem areas. The deep tissue is exactly how it sounds very deep. You're going within the muscle tissue, unlike the Swedish where you're going along the muscle tissue. So you're really getting deep into the problem areas and really like addressing those hard to get deeper muscles.
Speaker 2When you say that, do you actually feel that in your fingers Like this is really tight there, I can't. I'm working it, working it, working it. I can't get this undone I mean is that is that what most of us don't know about how tight muscles can get?
Speaker 3Yeah, it's incredible, so I actually can feel it. So when I place my hand on you, I can feel like exactly where you need attention and like how tight you are. I can feel knots and little, like little bumpies we like to call them rice krispies under the skin. I can feel so much by just like placing my hand on you. I also can like, uh, see your problem areas just by like taking a quick look at you, like if your shoulders are higher or like you can see, if you're kind of like slouched over a little bit, what areas you need to be worked on Interesting.
Finding With Honey Massage Studio
Speaker 2Well, that certainly welcomes a lot of thought, meaning that most of us are dealing with some kind of soreness or stiffness and even just stress, but, you know, to be able to have another eye on it and hands on it, to be able to help us understand what it is that we're having trouble with, because we don't really know why Starting with a massage is really the way to go. People come into the studio it's private and I guess typically they're laying down right on some kind of a massage bed and then for 30 minutes or 60 minutes or whatever you you, you go to work based on what you're observing, what they're saying their problem is and really what your training has taught you to be able to bring them into more of a holistic approach to their own body.
Speaker 2If you'd like to get a chance, if you'd get like a chance to talk to I mean, I've enjoyed this honey and I you might find me coming down to the salon suites there in learn park to be able to meet you and to be able to, uh, experience a massage really with honey massage studio, which you can check out on the website with honey massage studiocom. And if you want to reach honey, her phone number is easily. She's accessible at 4, 8, 4, 3, 2, 6, 2, 6, 1, 7. If you'd like to email honey, it's just as easy.
