Maria was born in Vasylkiv, a small town near Kyiv where battles broke out at the very start of the war, forcing her to flee abroad. She first moved to Slovakia and later to Germany, living with host families, attending new schools, and learning new languages along the way.
What was it like to adapt to unfamiliar environments again and again? How do schools there differ from those in Ukraine? And what did it feel like to finally return home after so much time away?
