SPECIAL ISSUE: Surviving Sarajevo: a journey toward understanding war
Maz was only ten years old when the Bosnian War erupted, and his hometown of Sarajevo fell under siege. He and his mother eventually managed to flee to Germany on a UN convoy, escaping under heavy bombardment, while his father - a soldier - had to remain in Bosnia. For the next three and a half years, the only way Maz could communicate with his father was through letters that took weeks to arrive and through amateur radio clubs. When his father finally managed to reunite with the family, they left for Australia, where Maz later fulfilled his childhood dream of becoming a soldier. Today, he lives in Australia and produces the Voices of War podcast, a project dedicated to challenging simplistic narratives about war.
