You set the goal. You felt fired up. You started taking action.

And then a few weeks in — nothing. So you told yourself you weren't doing enough, weren't doing it right, or maybe just weren't the kind of person who follows through.

Here's what's actually happening: it's not a motivation problem. It's not a discipline problem. It's a missing-system problem.

In this episode, I'm walking you through The GOALS System — a simple, repeatable framework for moving from outcome pressure to process ownership. We'll talk about why traditional goal setting (yes, including SMART goals) leaves a critical gap, and what to do instead.

If you're a coach, consultant, or service-based entrepreneur who is doing the work and still not seeing the results — this one's for you.

What You'll Learn

  • Why SMART goals aren't wrong — just incomplete
  • The one distinction that changes how you measure progress
  • How to identify the actions that are actually within your control
  • Why small consistent actions beat big sporadic effort every time
  • How data is the key to stopping the emotional spiral

Have you ever set a goal, felt completely fired up about it? You start taking action, and then before you know it, the to-do list piles up. You're staying busy, you're doing all the things, a lot of things, and then three months down the road, you look around and you think, I am no closer to this goal than when I started. So then the shame spiral starts. You tell yourself you're not doing enough or you're not doing it right. And this is the one thing that really stings. You start wondering if you're not the woman or the man who can make it happen. I've been there. Most of my clients have been there too. Here's what I've learned: it's usually not a motivation problem. It's not even a discipline problem, it's a systems problem. And that's what today is all about. I want to walk you through a framework I use in my own business and with my clients. I call it the goal system. And it's not a pep talk, it's not about a longer to-do list, it's not about adding more to your plate. It's really about having a process of working toward what you want without tying your self-worth to the outcomes. Because you can't fully control the outcomes anyway. So let's get into it. Welcome to the Clarity to Clients podcast. If you're a coach, consultant, or course creator living in tech overload, scattered in your messaging, or unsure what to do next, you are in the right place. Hi, I'm Jessica Downing, your business clarity coach, and I am here to help you cut through the noise, simplify your systems, and confidently connect with the clients you're meant to serve. Each week, I'll bring you quick tips, real talk, and deep dives that give you the clarity and confidence to move your business forward. So grab your coffee, open your notebook, and let's start building a business that feels simple, sustainable, and aligned with you. Most of us were taught to set goals around outcomes. Sign three clients, hit 10,000 this month, grow to a thousand followers. And look, direction matters. I'm not anti-goal. I am a big advocate for having a clear vision on where you want to go. But here's where it breaks down. We don't really have control over most outcomes. You can still do everything right and not hit the number. You can publish a post, but you can't force the engagement. You can send the email, but you can't force the reply. You can make the offer, but you can't make them say yes. So when the result never happens or it doesn't happen quick enough, most people do one of three things. They quit, they throw everything out and start over, or they push harder, burn out, and end up right back where they started. None of that is a you problem. That is a missing system problem. Before I walk you through the framework that is going to give you a system that helps you follow through on your goals, I want to make one distinction that changes how you look at goal achievement. Inputs and outputs. Inputs are the actions you take, the things completely within your control. Inputs are writing the post, sending the email, following up with a lead, making the offer, showing up where people can find you. Outputs are what those actions produce. The replies, the clicks, the calls booked, the sales. Here's the truth most goal setting advice skips over. You can control your inputs. You cannot always control your outputs. So let's talk about the system that's going to help you dial in your process to get you closer to achieving those goals. Okay, so the goal system is get clear on your vision first, own your inputs, act consistently, look at your data and sharpen your approach. And if you didn't catch it, goals is an acronym for this process. So get clear, own your inputs, act consistently and look at your data, and then sharpen your approach. And we're going to dig into each of these. G, get clear on your vision. Before anything else, get specific about what you're actually working toward. Not, I want more clients. That's not a vision. That's a wish. Ask yourself what would success actually look like? What would be different if this worked? Who do I need to become to actually get there? The vision gives you your effort direction. Once it's clear your job is not to obsess over it. Your job is to ask, what can I actually control from here? Oh, own your inputs. This is the heart of the whole system. Instead of asking, how do I get more clients? Ask what actions make clients more likely. Instead of why isn't my content working, ask what am I actually doing and what's happening when I do it. For a coach or service provider, your inputs might look like this: three visibility posts a week on social media, one email to your list every week, a podcast episode or YouTube video every week, five follow-ups with warm leads. You want to keep this simple and repeatable. And honestly, if you can't clearly name your inputs right now, that's the first thing you want to fix. Because showing up more is not an input. It's just pressure with better branding. A. Act consistently. This is where you do the reps. And I want to be real with you. This is the part that feels the most discouraging. Because in the beginning, it can look like nothing is happening. You're posting, you're following up, you're showing up, and the result just isn't there yet. Here's what I want you to hold on to though. Small, consistent actions beat sporadic effort every single time. One post won't create a client, but 30 posts might. One email won't make a sale, but a year of weekly emails builds a relationship that converts when the time is right. The reps build skill, they build trust, they build the evidence you need to actually know it's working. One more thing worth naming here. Consistency only works when it's connected to the right strategy. Repeating the wrong thing forever isn't discipline. It's avoidance dressed up as discipline. So stay consistent and then look at the data to determine your next move. And that brings us to L. Look at your data. This is the step that takes the emotion out of it. Instead of why isn't this working? What's wrong with me? You ask, what did I do? What's happening? What am I learning? And data doesn't only mean numbers. Yes, look at the open rates, the calls booked, the sales made, all of that. Great data. But also ask yourself, am I getting clearer in my message? Are the conversations getting easier? Did I actually do the inputs I'm committed to? Sometimes the first measurable result isn't revenue. Sometimes the win is that you stopped avoiding the action. Sometimes the win is that you finally have enough information to see exactly where the gap is. It's not failure, it's data. So use it. And lastly, S. Sharpen your approach. This is where the system becomes a loop, not a line. You look at the evidence and then you adjust. People engaging but not booking, look at your call to action. People booking but not buying, look at the offer or the sales conversation. Didn't complete your inputs, then simplify your plan so you can show up more. Sharpening your approach is what keeps consistency from turning into doing more of the same thing and hoping harder. We don't want to burn it all down. We don't need to start over. Just look at what's working and what isn't. And then adjust accordingly. Adjust based on the data, not what you're feeling. So let's look at this in a real life scenario. Say your goal is to sign more clients by the end of the month. A traditional approach like smart goal setting, where it's specific, measurable, attainable, relevant, time bound. That would basically just put that in those categories. So sign three clients, it's measurable, three clients, attainable, sure, it's attainable. Relevant, yes, I want to grow my business, time bound by the end of the month. On paper, it checks all the boxes. But here's what's missing: there's no plan. It's just a number and a lot of pressure. Smart goal setting tells you what you want, which is great. It doesn't tell you what to do tomorrow morning when you wake up in the morning, though. And it really doesn't help you make it more likely that your goal is going to be achieved because without a plan and a process, how are you going to achieve that goal? So this is where the goal system comes in to fill in that gap. So, G, get clear on your vision. You want to sign through clients this month, that's a vision, that's a direction. Oh, own your inputs. You're going to create your list of actions that you're going to take for this month, and then you're going to schedule them on your calendar. So if you're going to publish five posts on social media every week, maybe a podcast episode every week, a blog post, and every piece of content that you share has one clear call to action. And then next, you're going to act consistently. This is where you're going to commit for a certain time period. Schedule everything. Get all of those inputs on your calendar. And then you're going to look at the data. So give it some time. And then at the end of each week or at the end of the month, you're going to look at what happened and you're going to track that. Make sure you're tracking data that actually matters. The data is completely neutral. We don't want to base this on feeling like I feel like this is working or I feel like it's not working. Look at what's actually coming through the data. And sometimes our sample size isn't big enough. So keep that in mind. If you're not getting the traffic to the sales page or you're not getting the engagement on the social media post, keep at it because you need the numbers to be able to be able to really look and have a good assessment of the data and what's working and what's not. Okay, so if you're listening to this and you're thinking, okay, but how do I actually figure out what my inputs should be? That's exactly what my clarity calls for. It's free. It's 30 minutes. We're going to look at where you are, what's been getting in your way, and figure out what's going to move the needle forward in your business. So if you want to take me up on that offer, it is again, it's free. The link is in the show notes, and I would love to meet you. So just to recap, you're going to get clear in your vision. You're going to own your inputs. Those are your actions you're going to take on a consistent basis. Act consistently, show up for those inputs, then look at your data, and then sharpen your approach. So try it out, see what it shows you. And I would love to hear from you. So feel free to send me a message or leave a review. And thank you so much for listening. I will talk to you soon. Have a great week.
