7: The Mental Cycle of an Entrepreneur

Over the years, we’ve interviewed dozens of entrepreneurs on The Green Couch, talking about the ups and downs of business from a mental standpoint. At Worx, we’ve designed thousands of branding and marketing materials for small businesses. And because I’m a silent observer, I started to notice a pattern. I realized there is a cycle in the entrepreneurial mind. I like to call it, “you know the drill.”

Here’s a quick snapshot of what that sounds like:

• Oooh! I have an idea!
• I can’t wait to get started!
• There’s a lot to figure out.
• Can I even do this?
• I don’t have any time.
• Why me? Who even cares what I have to say?
• I don’t think I can handle this. 
• I’ll work on this when I have time.
• What was that idea again?
• Repeat.

Sound familiar?

It is important to recognize that there is a cycle to the way you think and the emotions that come along for the ride. The more you understand them, the easier it will be to accept and work through them. Does that mean it’s easy? Ha, no. However, each season deserves its time and know that it’s “normal” takes a lot of pressure off of you, wondering if you’re the only one feeling like this.
