radar,"},{"startTime":238.875,"endTime":244.015,"body":"So in my case, Going to North Carolina"},{"startTime":244.015,"endTime":249.79999999999998,"body":"A\u0026 T was on my parents radar versus my"},{"startTime":244.015,"endTime":249.79999999999998,"body":"radar, and they knew the importance of"},{"startTime":249.79999999999998,"endTime":253.57,"body":"getting a higher education, because my"},{"startTime":249.79999999999998,"endTime":253.57,"body":"parents didn't get a higher education."},{"startTime":253.57,"endTime":260.345,"body":"And so Winston Salem State was next door"},{"startTime":253.57,"endTime":260.345,"body":"from Winston Salem, North Carolina, and A\u0026"},{"startTime":260.415,"endTime":262.615,"body":"T was right down the street in Greensboro."},{"startTime":262.95,"endTime":265.13,"body":"But I knew I wanted to be an architect."},{"startTime":265.273,"endTime":266.343,"body":"Or an engineer."},{"startTime":266.418,"endTime":269.002,"body":"And those programs existed at A\u0026 T."},{"startTime":269.002,"endTime":273.992,"body":"So, from a historical perspective"},{"startTime":269.002,"endTime":273.992,"body":"HBCUs have been the foundation of"},{"startTime":273.992,"endTime":277.642,"body":"our higher ed for African Americans."},{"startTime":278.10900000000004,"endTime":279.769,"body":"And it's important that we continue that."},{"startTime":279.769,"endTime":284.676,"body":"So, I intentionally wanted all"},{"startTime":279.769,"endTime":284.676,"body":"my degrees to be from an HBCU."},{"startTime":284.676,"endTime":286.276,"body":"And I've done that."},{"startTime":286.276,"endTime":289.896,"body":"So, my undergraduate is A\u0026 T, and my"},{"startTime":286.276,"endTime":289.896,"body":"master's and my doctorate is two"},{"startTime":310.043,"endTime":315.528,"body":"all white high schools, and it was"},{"startTime":315.528,"endTime":320.868,"body":"an educational social experience"},{"startTime":315.528,"endTime":320.868,"body":"which had its pluses and its minuses."},{"startTime":320.94800000000004,"endTime":328.44,"body":"So, from an educational perspective,"},{"startTime":320.94800000000004,"endTime":328.44,"body":"I was not educated by my white"},{"startTime":328.45,"endTime":332.868,"body":"instructors at those white public"},{"startTime":328.45,"endTime":332.868,"body":"high schools that were integrated."},{"startTime":332.868,"endTime":334.50800000000004,"body":"And so it was a struggle."},{"startTime":334.601,"endTime":337.901,"body":"But when I got to A\u0026 T, I saw all of us."},{"startTime":338.576,"endTime":343.466,"body":"And all African American instructors"},{"startTime":338.576,"endTime":343.466,"body":"and all of a sudden it was like,"},{"startTime":344.046,"endTime":347.706,"body":"oh my goodness, , I've arrived, so"},{"startTime":344.046,"endTime":347.706,"body":"if I had an issue I had an African"},{"startTime":347.706,"endTime":349.216,"body":"American instructor right there."},{"startTime":349.476,"endTime":351.956,"body":"It's important for our"},{"startTime":349.476,"endTime":351.956,"body":"people to have an HBCU."},{"startTime":352.716,"endTime":353.236,"body":"Period."},{"startTime":354.176,"endTime":358.916,"body":"I personally think that we instructors."},{"startTime":378.91,"endTime":383.13,"body":"were the smartest people I have"},{"startTime":378.91,"endTime":383.13,"body":"ever met in my entire life, and it"},{"startTime":383.13,"endTime":388.06,"body":"made sense because they had to be"},{"startTime":383.13,"endTime":388.06,"body":"in the forefront of the education"},{"startTime":388.06,"endTime":391.35,"body":"curve so they can come and teach us."},{"startTime":392.23,"endTime":395.66,"body":"HBCU is not only important"},{"startTime":392.23,"endTime":395.66,"body":"culturally speaking, but they're also"},{"startTime":395.66,"endTime":397.76,"body":"important for educational component."},{"startTime":398.04,"endTime":403.5,"body":"But we need African American faculty"},{"startTime":398.04,"endTime":403.5,"body":"and instructors at our HBCUs because"},{"startTime":403.52000000000004,"endTime":407.79,"body":"the population is the African"},{"startTime":403.52000000000004,"endTime":407.79,"body":"American population of our dealing"},{"startTime":428.329,"endTime":432.415,"body":"with, the issue of race, right?"},{"startTime":432.415,"endTime":435.15500000000003,"body":"And so you, you come here and you're"},{"startTime":432.415,"endTime":435.15500000000003,"body":"dealing with white comfort and"},{"startTime":435.15500000000003,"endTime":437.875,"body":"you're having these conversations"},{"startTime":435.15500000000003,"endTime":437.875,"body":"about all the things that I grew up"},{"startTime":437.875,"endTime":442.175,"body":"with historically knowing my black"},{"startTime":437.875,"endTime":442.175,"body":"culture, my black history, and then"},{"startTime":442.175,"endTime":443.95500000000004,"body":"I'm confronted with white comfort."},{"startTime":444.075,"endTime":447.39500000000004,"body":"And so are we doing a"},{"startTime":444.075,"endTime":447.39500000000004,"body":"service or a disservice?"},{"startTime":447.67,"endTime":451.28000000000003,"body":"In keeping white folks comfortable and"},{"startTime":447.67,"endTime":451.28000000000003,"body":"keeping that history hidden, defensiveness"},{"startTime":455.744,"endTime":459.064,"body":"because of their lack of knowledge,"},{"startTime":455.744,"endTime":459.064,"body":"so I definitely agree with you."},{"startTime":459.094,"endTime":464.124,"body":"In fact, I did not go to an HBCU,"},{"startTime":459.094,"endTime":464.124,"body":"but I'm fully leaning into the"},{"startTime":464.124,"endTime":465.974,"body":"culture so much so that my kids."},{"startTime":466.464,"endTime":469.994,"body":"through North Star are being"},{"startTime":466.464,"endTime":469.994,"body":"introduced to HBCU culture and so"},{"startTime":469.994,"endTime":472.754,"body":"my kids HBCUs are on their challenge,"},{"startTime":545.362,"endTime":549.736,"body":"So my idea was  to take the GIS."},{"startTime":549.736,"endTime":554.353,"body":"And bring that to the forefront"},{"startTime":549.736,"endTime":554.353,"body":"within our particular department."},{"startTime":554.353,"endTime":558.4929999999999,"body":"And to do that, you have to have a lot"},{"startTime":554.353,"endTime":558.4929999999999,"body":"of conversation with your colleagues."},{"startTime":558.656,"endTime":562.856,"body":"Well, if your colleagues are of want"},{"startTime":575.194,"endTime":580.314,"body":"to be able to include your colleagues"},{"startTime":575.194,"endTime":580.314,"body":"across the spectrum, hopefully, so"},{"startTime":580.334,"endTime":584.3539999999999,"body":"you can meet that challenge for that"},{"startTime":580.334,"endTime":584.3539999999999,"body":"particular in this case, the GIS."},{"startTime":584.544,"endTime":588.4939999999999,"body":"So the challenge I had was"},{"startTime":584.544,"endTime":588.4939999999999,"body":"one, I was one of few African"},{"startTime":588.4939999999999,"endTime":589.8639999999999,"body":"Americans in the department."},{"startTime":589.8879999999999,"endTime":592.438,"body":"And I was the only one who understood GIS."},{"startTime":592.448,"endTime":597.2679999999999,"body":"So, and then you have to then kind of"},{"startTime":592.448,"endTime":597.2679999999999,"body":"like see if it's a fit for other faculty"},{"startTime":597.2779999999999,"endTime":599.288,"body":"in their particular areas of expertise."},{"startTime":599.4939999999999,"endTime":600.424,"body":"Well, that's a SAIL."},{"startTime":600.424,"endTime":602.524,"body":"Again, that's a SAIL, right?"},{"startTime":602.7339999999999,"endTime":605.185,"body":"So, GIS is chore."},{"startTime":620.199,"endTime":624.259,"body":"And so I'm at a disadvantage at"},{"startTime":620.199,"endTime":624.259,"body":"an HBCU because I'm one of the"},{"startTime":624.259,"endTime":627.2189999999999,"body":"few African American faculties"},{"startTime":624.259,"endTime":627.2189999999999,"body":"in the department at an HBCU."},{"startTime":628.029,"endTime":633.423,"body":"And so now I'm having to defend"},{"startTime":628.029,"endTime":633.423,"body":"and sell at an HBCU to, it's conversation"},{"startTime":638.4029999999999,"endTime":640.283,"body":"piece, they would try their best."},{"startTime":640.8679999999999,"endTime":644.8109999999999,"body":"But at the end of the day, it wouldn't"},{"startTime":640.8679999999999,"endTime":644.8109999999999,"body":"connect, so that's where I was getting"},{"startTime":644.8109999999999,"endTime":650.3309999999999,"body":"at when you saw my, my insert about"},{"startTime":644.8109999999999,"endTime":650.3309999999999,"body":"that challenge in dealing with being in"},{"startTime":650.3309999999999,"endTime":654.3009999999999,"body":"a department with few African American"},{"startTime":650.3309999999999,"endTime":654.3009999999999,"body":"faculty in it,
