Who are you? Not just in words, not merely in what you tell others, but in action, in habit, in consistency. If someone followed you for a week—without hearing a word from your mouth—what conclusion would they come to about you? Would they see the evidence of who you profess to be?
In today’s world, professions of faith, character, and values are abundant. People declare themselves to be followers of Christ, people of integrity, or lovers of righteousness, yet what truly separates those who simply profess from those who possess? Jesus warned of this very issue: "Not every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that doeth the will of my Father which is in heaven" (Matthew 7:21). Our confession is not enough; our lives must testify of our transformation.
The Fruit Test: Evidence of Transformation
Jesus made it clear that a person is known by their fruit. "Ye shall know them by their fruits. Do men gather grapes of thorns, or figs of thistles? Even so every good tree bringeth forth good fruit; but a corrupt tree bringeth forth evil fruit" (Matthew 7:16-17). If the roots of your life are anchored in Christ, the fruit will naturally reflect His character. Love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, meekness, and temperance—these are the marks of a life that is yielded to the Holy Spirit (Galatians 5:22-23). If these qualities are lacking, then a deeper examination is necessary.
Many profess to love but live in resentment. They profess faith yet live in fear. They profess humility but walk in pride. The truth is, our actions reveal what we truly believe. If we claim to belong to Christ, our lives should bear witness to that claim.
The Heart of a Servant: True Greatness
Jesus Himself demonstrated that evidence of our profession is found in servanthood. When His disciples disputed over greatness, He corrected them: "But he that is greatest among you shall be your servant" (Matthew 23:11). Our willingness to serve rather than be served, to give rather than receive, to esteem others higher than ourselves, is a testament to our transformation in Christ.
The Pharisees, despite their outward displays of religion, were rebuked by Jesus because their hearts were far from God. They loved recognition but despised true humility. They imposed burdens on others but did not lift a finger to help (Matthew 23:4-5). What about us? Are we eager to serve, or do we only desire platforms and positions? The evidence of a true follower of Christ is not found in mere words, but in a life poured out for the sake of others.
The Test of Love: Authentic Discipleship
Jesus provided the ultimate test of authenticity: love. "By this shall all men know that ye are my disciples, if ye have love one to another" (John 13:35). Love is not merely a feeling; it is an action. It is patient, kind, not easily provoked, and seeks not its own (1 Corinthians 13:4-5). Love is forgiving, even when wronged. Love endures, even when it would be easier to walk away.
In a world where division, hatred, and selfish ambition are prevalent, the love of a true believer should stand out. Love is the evidence that Christ dwells within us. It is love that compels us to forgive those who hurt us. It is love that drives us to pray for those who persecute us. It is love that causes us to serve, even when it is inconvenient.
If you profess to be a disciple of Christ, is your love evident? Does it extend beyond your words? Does it reach those who are difficult, those who do not reciprocate, those who misunderstand you?
The Measure of Obedience: True Devotion
Obedience to God’s Word is the clearest evidence of who you truly are. "And why call ye me, Lord, Lord, and do not the things which I say?" (Luke 6:46). It is not enough to claim Jesus as Lord; He must truly reign over every area of our lives. A tree does not struggle to bear fruit—it does so because of what it is connected to. In the same way, obedience flows naturally from a heart surrendered to God.
The evidence of a transformed life is a desire to please God, even when no one is watching. It is in the daily choices—choosing truth over deception, purity over compromise, forgiveness over bitterness. It is in forsaking sin, not excusing it. It is in aligning one’s life with God’s commands, not seeking loopholes to justify disobedience.
A Life Set Apart: Living in Holiness
Paul reminds us in Romans 12:2: "And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God." A true believer is set apart, not blending into the world but standing as a light in darkness. Our entertainment choices, conversations, attitudes, and pursuits should reflect the holiness of God.
If there is no distinction between our lives and the lives of unbelievers, what evidence do we have of our profession? Do we dress, speak, and act in ways that mirror the culture, or do we reflect the righteousness of Christ?
Examining Yourself
Examining Yourself: Are You Truly in the Faith?
Paul exhorted the church: "Examine yourselves, whether ye be in the faith; prove your own selves" (2 Corinthians 13:5). Self-examination is necessary. Are you who you say you are? Are you truly walking with Christ, or are you merely wearing a label?
This is not about perfection, but about direction. Are you growing in righteousness? Do you hunger for God’s presence? Is your life a reflection of His truth? If not, the answer is not in trying harder, but in surrendering fully. Let Him transform you from the inside out.
Conclusion: The Witness of Your Life
The evidence of who you profess to be is not in words alone, but in the fruit of your life. It is in the love you extend, the obedience you walk in, the humility you demonstrate, and the holiness you embrace. Your life is a witness. The question is, what does it testify?
