So who is God, really?
The Holiness of God
He is holy beyond our comprehension. So holy that even angels cry “Holy, holy, holy” before Him day and night. His holiness is not a mere attribute—it is His essence, His being, and it consumes all that He is. His holiness is a purity so immense that nothing impure can stand in His presence. We often speak of holiness in human terms, thinking of it as a set of rules or virtues we strive toward. But God’s holiness is not merely a goal to reach; it is the very foundation of His character. It is why we stand in awe before Him, why our hearts are both stirred and humbled in His presence. His holiness is a standard that we can never fully match, but one that draws us near, beckoning us to be transformed by His grace.
Understanding God's Sovereignty
He is sovereign. He does not need permission to move, nor does He owe us explanations for His plans. The sovereignty of God is a doctrine that can be difficult for us to fully embrace because, as humans, we are used to holding the reins in our lives. We want to control our circumstances, manage our outcomes, and dictate our paths. But God is not bound by our timelines, our wishes, or our understanding. He is the Creator of the universe, the One who made every star, every galaxy, and every detail in creation. Nothing surprises Him, and nothing is out of His control. When we try to fit Him into our plans or demand an explanation for His actions, we forget that He is the supreme authority, and we are but His creation. The beauty of His sovereignty is that it offers us peace: He is in control, and we are free to trust Him with everything.
The Fierce Love of God
He is loving, yes—but that love is not soft or passive. It is fierce, sacrificial, and active. A love that disciplines. A love that sent His Son to die for people who would reject Him. God’s love is not some warm, vague feeling. It is the very essence of His being, and it is a love that moves Him to action. It is a love that saw the brokenness of the world and chose to step into it, to redeem it at the cost of His own life. His love is not content to leave us as we are. It is a love that confronts sin, a love that purifies, and a love that calls us to something higher. This love is not a passive sentiment, but an active, relentless pursuit of our hearts. His love seeks, saves, and transforms, even when we don’t deserve it. This fierce love doesn’t shy away from the hard truths—it embraces them in order to heal, restore, and make whole what was once lost.
God's Infinite Wisdom
He is wise. He sees what we cannot see, knows what we do not know, and understands what we never could. His ways are higher, and His thoughts are not our thoughts (Isaiah 55:8-9). How often do we struggle to understand the path before us? How many times do we find ourselves in the midst of confusion, questioning why things are happening the way they are? In those moments, we can rest in the wisdom of God. His knowledge is not limited by time, space, or human understanding. He sees the beginning, the middle, and the end of every situation all at once. His wisdom is perfect, and He has a plan for everything. Even in our moments of uncertainty, we can trust that He is working all things together for good, because His wisdom surpasses ours. His plan is far more intricate, far more beautiful, and far more perfect than anything we could ever design.
The Unmatched Power of God
He is powerful. He speaks and worlds come into existence. He breathes and life begins. He commands storms, parts seas, and raises the dead. The power of God is unmatched. It is a power that is not bound by the limitations of this world. He is the Creator, the One who formed the heavens and the earth by the word of His mouth. His power is seen in the natural world—when He causes the rain to fall, the sun to rise, or the oceans to rage. But it is also seen in the supernatural—the healing of the sick, the restoration of the broken, the casting out of demons, and the raising of the dead. God’s power is active, dynamic, and unyielding. It is a power that is always at work, even when we cannot see it, and it is a power that will ultimately bring victory over sin, death, and every enemy. His power is not just something He possesses; it is the very force by which the universe operates.
God's Righteousness and Justice
He is righteous. He doesn’t tolerate sin. He judges evil. He does what is right—even when it’s not what we would have chosen. In a world where moral standards are often blurred or subjective, God’s righteousness is absolute. He is the standard by which all things are measured, and His judgments are always just. He cannot and will not overlook sin or evil. His righteousness demands that justice be done, but it also reveals the depth of His mercy. He does not delight in punishing the wicked, but His justice ensures that sin will not go unpunished. Yet, in His mercy, He offers a way for us to be reconciled to Him through Christ. His righteousness, therefore, is not only a reminder of His holiness and judgment, but also a demonstration of His love and grace. It is through His righteousness that we find our hope, knowing that He will always do what is right, even when we cannot understand it.
A Personal and Intimate God
And yes, He is personal. He walks with us, listens to us, and speaks to us. But we must never confuse intimacy with informality. He is close, but He is still God. One of the most beautiful aspects of God’s nature is His desire for relationship with us. He is not a distant, detached deity who remains uninvolved in our lives. He is near to the brokenhearted, close to the humble, and always ready to listen. His heart is inclined toward us, and He desires to walk alongside us in our journey. But this intimacy does not erase His holiness. We must never forget that He is God—the Creator of the universe, the King of kings, the Lord of lords. While He is personal and relational, He is also to be revered, respected, and honored. Our closeness to Him should never breed familiarity that causes us to lose sight of His greatness.
Discovering the Infinite God
We don’t get to define Him. We get to discover Him. God is not something we can mold or shape according to our desires. We cannot reduce Him to a set of principles or a box that fits our understanding. He is infinite, eternal, and beyond our comprehension. Our role is not to define Him but to seek Him, to discover the depths of who He is, and to let His revelation shape our lives. He has made Himself known to us through His Word, His Son, and His Spirit. As we journey with Him, we learn more about His nature, and we are transformed by the encounter.
Conclusion: Knowing God
God is not a concept to be understood; He is a living reality to be known. And in knowing Him, we are drawn deeper into His holiness, sovereignty, love, wisdom, power, righteousness, and personal care.
