Let me start with a confession: I didn’t always know how to tell the difference between truth and deception. I grew up hearing a lot of catchy Christian sayings, and I took them as gospel. It wasn’t until life pushed me to really know God for myself that I realized—some of the things we say and believe in church culture sound good… but they’re just not biblical.

We don’t talk about this enough. But false doctrines and half-truths are everywhere. And they’re dangerous not because they sound crazy—but because they sound almost right. That’s how the enemy works. He knows how to package a lie in a way that feels familiar. He did it in the garden with Eve, and he’s still doing it now.

Half-Truths in Christian Culture

One of the most common half-truths I hear is: “God just wants you to be happy.” Now listen, I believe God cares about us deeply. He loves to see us smile, He gives good gifts, and His presence brings joy. But let’s be clear: God’s goal isn’t our happiness—it’s our holiness. Sometimes the very thing that grows us spiritually doesn’t feel good at all. If we live our lives chasing comfort, we’ll end up avoiding the very process that transforms us.

Misconceptions About Judgment and Grace

Then there’s this one: “Don’t judge me—only God can judge.” Sounds like Scripture, right? And it’s partially true. God is the final judge. But the Bible actually calls believers to hold each other accountable. It says we’re to correct one another in love (Galatians 6:1). If I’m heading for a cliff and you stay silent because you don’t want to “judge me,” that’s not love—that’s neglect. We’ve turned healthy correction into offense, and it’s costing people their spiritual lives.

Another one that messed me up for a while was around grace. I used to think, “I’m under grace, so I’m good.” And yes, we are under grace. But grace isn’t a pass to live sloppy. It’s the power to live righteously. It’s God saying, “I’ve got you—and I’ll help you change.” But I’ve seen people use grace as a reason to keep doing what they know God already told them to stop doing. That’s not grace. That’s rebellion, dressed up in church clothes.

The Power and Limits of Words

Let’s talk about another sneaky one: “Speak it into existence.” That one had me writing vision boards and declaring things left and right. And don’t get me wrong, there’s power in our words. The Bible says life and death are in the tongue. But I am not God. I can’t manifest things outside of His will just because I want them badly enough. I had to learn the hard way that faith is not about control—it’s about surrender.

Prosperity Gospel and True Blessings

Then there’s the prosperity gospel—the idea that if you’re really walking with God, you’ll be rich and everything will go your way. I remember feeling like I was doing something wrong because I was struggling financially, even though I was serving God with all my heart. But when I looked at Scripture, I realized most of Jesus’ disciples didn’t live in mansions. They were faithful… and still suffered. The truth is, being blessed isn’t about stuff—it’s about having God with you in all circumstances.

All these half-truths may start out sounding like encouragement. But over time, they start pulling people away from real intimacy with God. Because instead of following Jesus, we end up chasing a version of Him that we created in our own minds—one that never challenges us, never corrects us, and only tells us what we want to hear.

Guarding Against Deception

So how do we guard ourselves?

Here’s what I’ve learned:

You have to know the Word for yourself. Not just the popular verses. Not just what your favorite preacher posts on Instagram. Get into the Bible. Ask the Holy Spirit to open your eyes. I promise, when you start feeding yourself with truth, you’ll start noticing lies a lot faster.

Practical Steps to Discernment

Pray for discernment. I can’t stress this enough. Everything that sounds spiritual isn’t of God. Ask Him, “Lord, is this You?” And be willing to listen, even if the answer isn’t what you expected.

Stay teachable. This one’s hard, but we all have blind spots. Sometimes we believe something for years, and then God shows us, “That wasn’t Me.” Don’t let pride stop you from growing. If it’s truth, it will stand—even under pressure.

Pay attention to the fruit. If a teaching is making people more selfish, more prideful, or more lazy in their walk, it’s probably not of God. His truth brings freedom, conviction, growth, and transformation.

At the end of the day, the enemy doesn’t need you to stop going to church. He just needs you to believe a twisted version of the gospel. That’s enough to get you stuck—powerless, confused, and disconnected from your purpose.

Conclusion: Embrace Truth Over Inspiration

But the good news? God is always speaking. And if you’re willing to listen, He’ll lead you into truth. Every time.

So here’s my encouragement: Question everything. Even what you’ve been taught. Let God confirm it through His Word. Let Him strip away the fluff and the feel-good soundbites. Because in this hour, we don’t just need inspiration—we need truth.
