Picked on, teased, mocked, and ridiculed. I grew up with low self-esteem and a shattered sense of self-worth. I had no dreams, no desires, and no belief in anything beyond what I saw around me. Beaten down, never good enough, always made to feel inferior. I was depressed, unloved, unwanted, and isolated. These were the days that shaped my life from youth.
Living in Constant Fear
We hear a lot about our bodies being in fight or flight, but I lived in a constant state of flight. I was always trying to escape, desperately seeking a way out, a safe place. Somewhere I could finally feel peace As the firstborn, I often wondered why things seemed hardest for me. Why didn't I ever seem to catch a break?
My decisions were driven by fear. Brokenness and the intimidation I felt from my father, even as a young adult, his shadow loomed large over my life.
Seeking Validation and Making Poor Choices
Despite the trauma, I kept searching for my parents' approval. I carried things deep within me that I didn't even know were there. Anger, a persecution complex, a survival mindset.
In reality, I had no concept of who I was or where I was going. I lived in escape mode, always seeking love to feel validated, convinced that it would bring peace. Every decision I made came from that broken place. In that mindset, I made poor choices, and as the consequences of those choices began to surface, my mindset only worsened.
I was constantly swimming in despair, always looking for a way out, but none seemed available. Shame, regret, embarrassment. My past choices continued to shape and mold the way I thought. I lived in torment, constantly replaying the wrongs and the what ifs. I was on a high when things were good, but crashed into depression when they weren't.
That mindset kept me stuck, trapped in a cycle and pattern of nothingness until one day everything changed.
A Moment of Surrender
Interestingly, it happened during one of the worst moments of my life. I was at my lowest shattered and broken in pieces. When I found hope, a moment of surrender, an invitation to a new life free from the baggage I had carried, I accepted and things began to change.
Gradual Transformation Through Faith
Not all at once, but gradually, I dove in headfirst, soaking and immersing myself in the word of God.
Every waking moment I was seeking truth. At the time, I had no idea what was about to take place. Little by little I began to notice character flaws falling away. My areas of weakness started to grow stronger. One of the first things I noticed was my low self-esteem and lack of self-worth. I had always believed I wasn't good enough.
Even when I got married, I felt unworthy of my spouse. That kind of belief system causes problems in relationships. No one can fix your insecurities for you. Then I began to see the anger within me start to disappear. Again, not all at once, but little by little. And yes, you get tested along the way. Every weakness, every character flaw gets tested often to show you where you are in your development.
But here's the truth. It wasn't just about surrendering and brokenness. It wasn't only about soaking in the word, it was about surrendering to the transformative power of the Holy Spirit, allowing him to show me through his word, who I truly am in God's eyes. It was about seeing it, believing it, and living it.
Day by day, little by little, the truth began to take hold, and I've never been the same.
Embracing a New Identity
One of the first things I truly grasped was that I am not defined by my past. In God's eyes, I am forgiven no matter what I've done. Once you understand that, you begin to take on the identity He's given you in him as you accept and live out that truth.
The old passes away and you are born anew. Your past will try to pull you back, but God declares that you are new in him. Your mindset shifts from who you were and what you used to believe to who God says you are and whose you are. You begin to replace old thoughts with the truths of his word.
Living with a Renewed Mind
Over time with persistence, your mindset shifts to a kingdom mindset.
You continually think on things from above. You take every thought captive and make it subject to God's word. You start to distance yourself from anything and anyone that does not serve God's purpose for your life. You truly become a new person full of confidence, identity and clarity about who you are and where you're going.
The Journey to Purpose and Confidence
You begin to see the gifts and purpose that had been hidden inside you all along. The anointing takes hold and you become wiser, stronger, and overflowing with purpose. You are now set apart, holy, righteous, justified, sanctified, and created in his image for his purposes.
The Power of Renewing Your Mind
That is what renewing your mind does.
It's not easy. It takes time, diligence, and determination, but if you endure to the end, your reward will be glorious.
