This is perhaps the most important question any human being could ask. Not “What can God do for me?” or “What does God want from me?” but simply, Who is He?

To know God is to know truth. To know God is to understand purpose. To know God is to begin truly living. The Bible says in Daniel 11:32, “...but the people who know their God shall be strong and carry out great exploits.” Strength, direction, identity, and purpose all begin with rightly knowing God.

God Is Eternal and Self-Existent

In Exodus 3:14, when Moses asked God His name, the answer was profound: “I AM THAT I AM.” This wasn’t a cryptic riddle. It was a declaration of God’s self-existence. He wasn’t created. He doesn’t depend on anything outside Himself. He has no beginning and no end. He exists beyond time, space, and matter.

Psalm 90:2 puts it this way: “Before the mountains were brought forth, or ever You had formed the earth and the world, even from everlasting to everlasting, You are God.”

God simply is. He always was. He always will be.

This truth should humble us. Everything we know has a start and an end. But God exists outside of creation. He sustains all things, yet He is sustained by nothing.

God Is Holy

God is not just powerful, He is pure. Holiness is not just a part of God’s character, it is the essence of who He is. In Isaiah 6:3, the seraphim cry out, “Holy, holy, holy is the Lord of hosts; the whole earth is full of His glory!”

To be holy means to be completely set apart, morally perfect, and without flaw or blemish. God is untouched by sin, untainted by evil, and unshaken by corruption. His holiness is the standard of righteousness.

That’s why sin separates us from God. Not because He is distant or angry by nature, but because His holiness simply cannot dwell with wickedness. Without Christ’s righteousness, no one can stand in His presence (Hebrews 12:14).

God Is Love

One of the most beautiful truths of Scripture is found in 1 John 4:8: “God is love.”

Not God shows love, or God gives love—though both are true. But deeper still, God is love. His very nature is to love.

His love is not conditional, shallow, or earned. It is sacrificial, relentless, and redemptive. This love was demonstrated most clearly at the cross, where Jesus bore our sins to reconcile us to the Father. Romans 5:8 says, “But God shows His love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.”

God’s love is not just emotional; it’s active. He pursues, redeems, corrects, restores, and invites us into fellowship, because that’s who He is.

God Is Just

While God is love, He is also just. He cannot ignore sin or let wickedness go unpunished. His justice is perfect, He doesn’t play favorites, and He doesn’t bend His standards.

Deuteronomy 32:4 says, “He is the Rock, His work is perfect; for all His ways are justice, a God of truth and without injustice; righteous and upright is He.”

This is not a contradiction of His love, it is the complement to it. Because God loves, He must be just. A God who ignores evil is not loving, He is negligent. God’s justice ensures that righteousness prevails, that wrongs are made right, and that mercy has its full weight.

God Is Faithful

From Genesis to Revelation, we see a God who keeps His word. When He speaks, He acts. When He promises, He fulfills. Even when humanity fails again and again, God remains steady.

Lamentations 3:22-23 declares, “The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases; His mercies never come to an end; they are new every morning; great is Your faithfulness.”

This is critical for us to understand. In a world full of broken promises, failed systems, and untrustworthy hearts, God remains faithful. He does not lie. He does not change His mind. He does not abandon those who are His.

God Is All-Knowing, All-Present, and All-Powerful

These are often called the “omnis” of God: omniscience (all-knowing), omnipresence (present everywhere), and omnipotence (all-powerful).

Psalm 147:5 – “Great is our Lord, and mighty in power; His understanding is infinite.”

Jeremiah 23:24 – “Can a man hide himself in secret places so that I cannot see him? declares the Lord. Do I not fill heaven and earth?”

Job 42:2 – “I know that You can do all things, and that no purpose of Yours can be thwarted.”

God sees all, knows all, and controls all. There is no situation too big for Him, no heart too hidden, no plan that can override His.

God Is Personal

One of the greatest truths revealed in Jesus Christ is that God is not far off or uninterested. He is not a distant Creator who spun the world into motion and walked away. He is near. He is relational. He is Father.

Psalm 34:18 says, “The Lord is near to the brokenhearted and saves the crushed in spirit.”

Jesus taught us to pray, “Our Father in heaven,” showing us that God desires closeness, not ritual. He hears. He speaks. He guides. He walks with us.

Conclusion: Do You Know Him?

So… Who Is God?

God is not a myth. He is not a force. He is not a tradition.

 He is holy, yet loving.

 He is just, yet merciful.

 He is powerful, yet personal.

He is above all things, yet intimately involved with each of us.

He is Creator, Sustainer, Redeemer, and King. He is the One who was, and is, and is to come. He is the only One worthy of worship, obedience, and surrender.

The Real Question: Do You Know Him?

It’s not enough to know facts about God. The goal is to know Him, intimately, personally, truthfully. That’s why Jesus came, to reveal the Father to us and to reconcile us back to Him.

John 17:3 says, “And this is eternal life, that they know You, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom You have sent.”

If you want to know who you are, you must first know who God is.

If you want peace, purpose, identity, and direction, it begins with Him.

If you’ve been chasing religion, rules, or rituals, come back to the Person.

He is God. And He is inviting you to know Him.
