 Jeremiah 17:5-8

“Thus says the Lord:

‘Cursed is the man who trusts in man

 and makes flesh his strength,

whose heart turns away from the Lord.’”

This is not a suggestion. It is a divine declaration.

The Curse of Trusting in Man

The prophet Jeremiah speaks the word of the Lord with piercing clarity: to place your trust in human strength is to invite a curse. Not because God desires to punish, but because trusting in man is a path that leads away from Him. When you rely on flesh, on people, systems, intellect, or your own might—you detach your heart from the One who never fails.

God is not against wisdom, counsel, or even relationships. But He is against replacing Him with them. Trusting in man means your roots are shallow, your foundation is fragile, and when pressure comes, you will not stand.

“He is like a shrub in the desert,

and shall not see any good come.

He shall dwell in the parched places of the wilderness,

 in an uninhabited salt land.”

The Life of the Self-Reliant

This is the life of the self-reliant. Dry. Isolated. Disconnected. It may look strong on the outside, but it's empty underneath. A man who lives by his own wisdom may appear successful for a season, but storms reveal his condition. When drought comes, he withers. Why? Because his roots are in the sand.

The Blessed Way: Trusting in the Lord

But there is another way. A blessed way.

“Blessed is the man who trusts in the Lord,

 whose trust is the Lord.”

Not just someone who believes in God, but someone who rests in Him. Whose confidence is not in their own effort, but in God's unfailing faithfulness. This kind of trust anchors the soul. It allows a person to walk through fire and not be consumed, to endure drought and still bear fruit.

“He is like a tree planted by water,

that sends out its roots by the stream,

and does not fear when heat comes,

 for its leaves remain green,

and is not anxious in the year of drought,

for it does not cease to bear fruit.”

The Picture of Divine Stability

This is the picture of divine stability. A rooted life. Not easily shaken. Not moved by circumstances. Even when the heat of trials comes, even when the season is dry, this person does not fear, does not wither, does not stop producing. Why? Because they are planted by the water. Their source is not external, it is internal. They draw from a well that never runs dry.

The Wisdom of Trusting in God

The wisdom is clear:

Man fails. Flesh is limited. Systems collapse.

 But the Lord remains.

So the question becomes:

 Where is your trust planted?

Is it in people? In yourself?

Or is it in the Lord?

Conclusion: Choose Trust in the Lord

The wisdom of the prophets calls us to re-anchor our lives, not in shifting sand, but in the Rock that never moves. Trusting in God is not weakness, it is wisdom. It is life.

Choose wisely. Choose well. Choose trust in the Lord.
