You cannot scroll through social media without seeing post after post about chosen ones. If this is you, allow me to enlighten you before you declare that you are what's being spoken of. Be aware that this may not actually be you.

Biblical Foundation: Jeremiah's Calling

Before I formed you in the womb, I knew you and before you were born, I consecrated you.

I appointed you a prophet to the nations. Jeremiah one verse five. God knew you and predestined you before you were born. This makes you part of the elect chosen unto salvation with a secure place in God's eternal plan. That's a huge difference. How you see yourself and knowing who you are is vital to fulfilling the purpose God has placed inside you.

The difference is this being used for a divine purpose versus being a divine answer for a purpose, which are you.

Understanding God's Plan: Chosen vs. Elect

When reading scripture, it's easy to think that the words chosen and elect mean the exact same thing. While they're closely related, the Bible uses them with slightly different emphasis. Both speak of God's sovereign decision yet chosen often refers to being set apart for a purpose or role, while elect points more specifically to God's eternal plan of salvation.

Understanding this distinction helps us see the depth of God's calling, both in how he appoints people for service and how he secures his people for eternity chosen.

Deep Dive: The Meaning of 'Chosen'

Meaning to be selected or appointed by God for a particular role, purpose, or relationship usage chosen often highlights the act of God's initiative.

For example, Israel was chosen as a nation to be set apart for God. Deuteronomy seven, verse six. Similarly, Jesus chose his disciples. John 15, verse 16, emphasis. Being chosen emphasizes God's calling or setting apart sometimes for service, sometimes for salvation.

Deep Dive: The Meaning of 'Elect'

Elect, meaning refers to those who are predestined, set apart and secured. In God's eternal plan of salvation usage, elect carries a slightly stronger sense of permanence and identity in Christ. For example, believers are called the elect of God. Colossians three verse 12, one Peter one, verse two. Emphasis the elect are not only chosen, but also preserved and secured in God's redemptive plan.

It conveys a collective identity of God's people who are saved through Christ.

Clarifying the Distinction: Chosen and Elect

Making it plain chosen equals the act of God. Selecting, calling or appointing. It can apply broadly to individuals, groups, or purposes. Elect equals those chosen unto salvation, particularly emphasizing their secure place in God's eternal plan.

Conclusion: The Bigger Picture

So all the elect are chosen, but not everyone chosen is necessarily elect in the eternal sense. For example, Israel was chosen as a nation, but not every Israelite was part of the elect. Romans nine verse six.
