 Introduction to Spiritual Senses

Every believer has been given senses that extend beyond the natural. Our physical eyes, ears, and touch are essential to navigate this world, but as children of God, we have also been equipped with spiritual senses. These are not meant to lie dormant. They must be awakened, exercised, and strengthened so that we can live in discernment, victory, and alignment with God’s will.

Filtering Through the Spirit

Everything I hear, see, and feel is filtered first through my spiritual senses. When I listen to a sermon or hear someone speaking, I don’t just pay attention to the words being spoken. I discern the spirit behind them. Words carry weight, and not all words come from the Spirit of God. That’s why Paul warned the church to “test the spirits to see whether they are from God” (1 John 4:1). Without discernment, a believer can absorb teachings that sound right but carry deception. With discernment, the believer can identify truth from error and light from darkness.

When I watch television, a sermon, or even step into a room, I’m not just observing with my natural sight. I’m engaging my spiritual vision to assess the atmosphere. What is happening beneath the surface? What spirits are at work? What motives, emotions, and unseen realities are shaping the environment? This is not paranoia, but spiritual awareness. The unseen realm is more real than the visible, and our senses must be tuned to detect what others miss.

Perceiving the Atmosphere

Every environment carries an atmosphere. Walk into a room filled with bitterness or conflict, and you’ll feel it. Step into a place of worship saturated with prayer, and you’ll notice peace and freedom in the air. Spiritual senses allow us to detect the condition of the atmosphere and to respond accordingly. Sometimes God calls us to shift the atmosphere—through prayer, worship, or speaking truth. Other times He calls us to walk away, refusing to engage in a setting that is toxic or dangerous. Discernment is what helps us know the difference.

The writer of Hebrews explained that “solid food is for the mature, for those who have their powers of discernment trained by constant practice to distinguish good from evil” (Hebrews 5:14). Notice that phrase—trained by constant practice. Discernment doesn’t come fully developed. It grows through exercise, testing, and repeated use. Just as a bodybuilder strengthens muscle through resistance, believers strengthen their spiritual senses by standing against opposition.

Using Every Sense

God gave us natural senses to engage with the physical world. Likewise, He gave us spiritual senses to engage with the unseen world. My hearing, sight, sense of smell, touch, and intuition are all gateways through which God reveals what is hidden. Sometimes I discern through sound, what I hear in a conversation or a message. Sometimes it’s through sight, a vision, a spiritual impression, or a recognition that something is off. At times, it’s a “smell,” a spiritual awareness of something foul or corrupt in the atmosphere. Other times it’s a feeling, a weight, or a peace that confirms the presence of God.

Intuition, rooted in the Spirit, goes beyond logic. It allows me to recognize not only what is seen but what is unseen. It is the Spirit whispering to my heart that something is right, or warning me that something is wrong. Jesus said the Spirit would guide us into all truth (John 16:13). This guidance often comes through our spiritual senses.

Strengthened Through Resistance

The reality is this: you cannot grow in discernment without resistance. You will not sharpen your senses without enduring persecution or standing against evil. James reminds us, “And let steadfastness have its full effect, that you may be perfect and complete, lacking in nothing” (James 1:4). Trials and tests are not just random hardships. They are training grounds. Every battle, every moment of opposition, is an opportunity to refine your spiritual sight, sharpen your hearing, and strengthen your discernment.

The enemy works through deception, and his goal is to blind the eyes of believers. If we remain spiritually dull, we are vulnerable to traps, counterfeit words, and destructive atmospheres. But if we engage our senses, we can recognize his schemes and walk in victory. Opposition is not meant to destroy us—it is meant to strengthen us.

Guarding and Protecting

This is how we guard and protect ourselves from harm. Spiritual senses are a shield. When we recognize the presence of evil spirits, we don’t walk blindly into danger. When we discern the true nature of a person or environment, we can respond with wisdom. Some situations require prayer and authority to shift the atmosphere. Others require silence and separation. In both, discernment protects us.

Paul writes in Ephesians 6:12, “For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers over this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places.” That means our battle is spiritual, not natural. To fight effectively, we must see, hear, and sense beyond the natural.

Living With Eyes Open

Believers are not meant to stumble in darkness. We are called to be children of light, walking with eyes wide open. Our senses were given for more than survival in the natural world. They are tools for victory in the spiritual realm. When we sharpen them, we walk with confidence, clarity, and power. We discern truth from lies. We recognize atmospheres that align with God and those that oppose Him. We see through deception, and we guard our hearts against harm.

The more we exercise these senses, the more we mature in Christ. Discernment is not about suspicion or fear—it is about walking in wisdom, intimacy with God, and alignment with His Spirit. Spiritual senses are a gift. They are not just for the natural realm but also for the unseen realm where battles are fought and victories are won.

So ask yourself: are you exercising your spiritual senses? Are you filtering what you hear, see, and feel through the Spirit of God? Or are you walking only by what is visible? If you want to be perfect and complete, lacking nothing, you must let God sharpen your senses through steadfastness. Train them. Strengthen them. And walk as one who discerns world not only as it appears, but as it truly is.
