Every believer wrestles with a critical question: Which voice am I hearing? At any given moment, three voices can be present, the voice of the soul, the voice of the spirit, or the voice of the enemy. The ability to discern between them is vital, because the direction we follow shapes our choices, our growth, and even our destiny.
Understanding the Voice of the Soul
The soul is our mind, will, and emotions. It often speaks loudly because it processes life through human reasoning, personal desires, and emotional reactions. The soul’s voice can sound logical, practical, or even urgent, yet it is not always aligned with God.
Examples of the soul’s voice:
“This makes sense, so it must be right.” (mind)
“I feel strongly about this, so it must be true.” (emotions)
“I want this, so it must be God’s will.” (will)
The problem is that the soul, when not surrendered to God, can be influenced by pain, pride, or preference. Scripture reminds us, “Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind” (Romans 12:2). A renewed soul submits to the Word, but an unrenewed soul can mislead us.
Recognizing the Voice of the Spirit
The spirit is the part of us that is reborn when we come to Christ. It is where the Holy Spirit dwells and communicates with us. The spirit’s voice is marked by peace, clarity, and alignment with God’s Word. It is often gentle but firm, steady rather than rushed, and full of conviction.
Romans 8:16 says, “The Spirit himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God.” This witness is the inward knowing that comes from fellowship with Him. Unlike the soul, the spirit is not moved by emotion or circumstance. It speaks truth that carries weight and eternal perspective.
Identifying the Voice of the Enemy
The third voice is the enemy’s, and it must not be ignored. The enemy works through lies, accusations, and deception. His voice is often subtle, blending in with our thoughts to create doubt or fear. He questions what God has spoken, just as he did in the garden: “Did God really say…?” (Genesis 3:1).
Examples of the enemy’s voice:
“You’re not good enough. God won’t forgive you.”
If God loved you, He wouldn’t let this happen.”
“Go ahead, no one will know. It won’t hurt anything.”
The enemy’s goal is always the same—to steal, kill, and destroy (John 10:10). His voice pulls us away from truth, away from peace, and away from intimacy with God.
How to Discern Between the Voices
Filter by Scripture. The spirit’s voice always aligns with God’s Word. The soul and the enemy may contradict it.
Check the fruit. The spirit produces peace, love, and joy. The soul often produces anxiety or self-centeredness. The enemy produces fear, shame, or rebellion.
Notice the tone. The spirit leads with clarity and peace. The soul pushes or pulls with urgency. The enemy pressures, condemns, or confuses.
Look at the outcome. The spirit leads to life and obedience. The soul seeks comfort or control. The enemy’s voice leads to compromise and destruction.
The Importance of Discernment
Every decision, small or great, is shaped by which voice we follow. Proverbs 14:12 warns, “There is a way that seems right to a man, but its end is the way to death.” That “way” is often the soul or the enemy’s deception. The spirit, however, leads us into truth and life. To walk in the Spirit is to walk in alignment with God’s will, protected from deception and strengthened by truth.
