The Transformational Power of God's Word
God's word is transformational. It has the power to shape lives, renew minds and anchor hearts in truth, yet many believers neglect it. Why is that? If the Bible reveals God's character, his promises, and his plan for our lives, why do so many of us let it sit unopened if more than anything else, it reveals him the living God?
Why don't we read it with hunger and urgency? The truth is sobering.
Confronting the Truth in Scripture
Perhaps we avoid the word because of what it actually does. The scriptures are not a mirror that flatters. They are a mirror that confronts they are light. That exposes what we would rather keep hidden.
The word reveals truth that confronts lies every time we open The Bible. Truth confronts the lies we've chosen to believe lies about who we are. Lies about our worth, lies about sin being harmless or compromise being acceptable. The word cuts through those deceptions and leaves us face to face with God's standard.
For many that feels uncomfortable, even unbearable. So instead of allowing the word to correct us, we avoid it altogether.
The Challenge of Authenticity
The word uncovers motives. The Bible is not only concerned with what we do, but why we do it. It reaches into our hearts and asks hard questions. Are we serving God out of love or out of selfish ambition?
Do we give to be seen or do we give because we care? Do we worship with sincerity or with empty words? When the word pierces our motives, it demands authenticity, but sometimes it's easier to live in denial than to confront the truth about ourselves.
Exposing Deception and Lies
The word exposes, deception. God's word shines into the places where darkness lurks. It doesn't just reveal the lies we believe internally. It also exposes the schemes of the enemy. It unmasks cultural deception, forced teachings, and spiritual counterfeits. This kind of exposure demands vigilance, discernment, and change. Yet many would rather stay in the comfort of ignorance, then be confronted with the work of rooting deception out of their lives, comfortable with the lie.
The Comfort of Ignorance
At the root. Many Christians don't read their Bibles because we have grown comfortable with the lie. We tell ourselves we are too busy, too tired, or not disciplined enough. But beneath those excuses lies a deeper issue. We fear what will be revealed. We fear conviction, we fear change, and tragically we would rather maintain the illusion of being okay. Then face the truth that requires repentance and transformation.
The Tragic Loss of Neglecting the Word
The tragic loss, but what do we miss When we neglect the word we miss? Encountering the very heart of God. We miss his voice speaking into our confusion. We miss his promises that strengthen us in weakness. We miss the light that keeps us from stumbling in darkness.
Avoiding the Bible may shield us from discomfort in the moment, but it robs us of life, peace, direction, and intimacy with God.
Returning to the Word
Returning to the word the solution is not complicated. It begins with a decision. A decision to embrace the discomfort and allow God's word to do what Only it can do. A decision to face truth rather than hide from it. A decision to trade. Temporary comfort for eternal transformation. The word is not against us.
It is for us. It wounds in order to heal. It convicts in order to set free. It exposes in order to redeem. When we see the Bible for what it truly is, the breath of God, the revelation of his heart toward us, our excuses fall away.
The Choice Before Us
So why don't Christians read their Bibles? Perhaps the real answer is this, because we underestimate what's at stake.
To ignore the word is to ignore God himself. To open the word is to encounter the living God. The choice lies before us. Will we remain comfortable with the lie or will we run to the truth that sets us free?
