The episode challenges the misconception that following Jesus is mainly about receiving blessings, emphasizing instead that discipleship requires denying oneself, taking up the cross daily (Luke 9:23), and submitting one’s desires and identity to Christ for transformation. It describes what believers “sign up for,” including conviction by the Holy Spirit, costly obedience, spiritual warfare and persecution (John 15:20), being misunderstood, pruning for greater fruitfulness (John 15:1–2), and testing that refines faith (1 Peter 1:6–7). The message calls Christians to be set apart and Christlike, noting that surrender leads to intimacy with God, maturity, proven faith, and new life (Galatians 2:20).

AliciaOne of the greatest misconceptions in Christianity is that following Jesus is primarily about receiving blessings. Many people come to Christ because they need healing, deliverance, peace, provision, or answers. God certainly provides those things, but if that's all we think Christianity is about, we have missed the heart of discipleship. Jesus never hid the cost of following Him. In fact, He was very direct about it. "And he said to them all, If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily, and follow me." Luke 9:23 Notice that Jesus didn't say to follow your feelings. He didn't say to pursue your dreams. He didn't say to build your own kingdom and invite Him into it. He said deny yourself. The moment you chose to follow Christ, you signed up for a life that would no longer revolve around you. Your desires, ambitions, opinions, habits, and even your identity would come under the lordship of Jesus Christ. You signed up for transformation. You signed up for the process of becoming more like Him. That process is often beautiful, but it is rarely comfortable. You signed up for conviction. The Holy Spirit will begin exposing attitudes, mindsets, wounds, fears, pride, selfishness, unforgiveness, and areas of compromise that have been hidden in your heart for years. Not because God wants to condemn you, but because He wants to heal and transform you. You signed up for obedience. Obedience sounds easy until God asks you to do something that costs you something. Sometimes obedience means forgiving someone who never apologized. Sometimes obedience means staying when you want to leave. Sometimes obedience means leaving when you want to stay. Sometimes obedience means trusting God when every circumstance around you seems to be saying the opposite. You signed up for spiritual warfare. The moment you chose Christ, you changed kingdoms. You became a threat to darkness. The enemy doesn't mind people attending church if they never grow, mature, or walk in their God-given purpose. But when a believer becomes serious about pursuing God, renewing their mind, walking in truth, and obeying the Holy Spirit, resistance often follows. Jesus warned His followers: "Remember the word that I said unto you, The servant is not greater than his lord. If they have persecuted me, they will also persecute you." John 15:20 You signed up to be misunderstood. Not everyone will understand the changes God is making in your life. Some people will celebrate the old version of you while resisting the new version God is creating. Some relationships will grow stronger. Others may end entirely. Following Jesus often reveals who truly supports your growth and who only benefited from your dysfunction. You signed up for pruning. Jesus said: "I am the true vine, and my Father is the husbandman. Every branch in me that beareth not fruit he taketh away: and every branch that beareth fruit, he purgeth it, that it may bring forth more fruit." John 15:1-2 Pruning isn't punishment. Pruning is preparation. God removes things that hinder your growth so that you can become more fruitful. Sometimes He removes habits. Sometimes He removes distractions. Sometimes He removes relationships. Sometimes He removes things you thought you couldn't live without. But what God cuts away is never as valuable as what He is producing in you. You signed up for testing. Many believers want strong faith, but strong faith is developed through trials. Peter wrote: "That the trial of your faith, being much more precious than of gold that perisheth, though it be tried with fire, might be found unto praise and honour and glory at the appearing of Jesus Christ." 1 Peter 1:6-7 Fire reveals what is genuine. Trials reveal what we truly believe. Difficult seasons reveal whether our trust is in God or merely in our circumstances. You signed up to become set apart. The goal was never to look like the world while claiming the name of Christ. The goal is to become like Jesus. To think like Him. To love like Him. To serve like Him. To forgive like Him. To obey like Him. To represent Him wherever you go. Yes, there is a cost to discipleship. Jesus said: "And whosoever doth not bear his cross, and come after me, cannot be my disciple." Luke 14:27 But there is also a reward. On the other side of surrender is intimacy with God. On the other side of obedience is spiritual maturity. On the other side of testing is proven faith. On the other side of the cross is resurrection. Paul understood this when he wrote: "I am crucified with Christ: nevertheless I live; yet not I, but Christ liveth in me." Galatians 2:20 Many people want the promises of God. Many people want the blessings of God. Many people want the protection of God. But fewer people want the process that produces Christlikeness. The truth is, when you chose to follow Jesus, you didn't simply sign up to be blessed. You signed up to be transformed. You signed up to die to yourself. You signed up to carry your cross. You signed up to become a disciple. And in losing your life for His sake, you discover the life you were created to live all along.
