I've been there too. One of the biggest misconceptions I had when I first began my walk with God was believing I needed to become like everyone else. I watched people fall to the ground, believing they were being overtaken by the Holy Spirit. I witnessed people speaking in tongues and wondered how I could do that. I listened to people pray with such confidence and passion, and I found myself asking, why can't I pray like that? Without realizing it, I had begun measuring my relationship with God by someone else's experience. Over time, I noticed something that still concerns me today. We often spend more time trying to mold people into our image, our version, our methods, and our traditions than we do helping them discover the unique way God created them to function. Imitating Spiritual Gifts

truth. Long saw those manifestations in other people, so I tried to imitate them, but something interesting happened, nothing. Not only did nothing change, something inside me felt off. There was an uneasiness I couldn't explain. Deep within me, I lacked the conviction that I was pursuing the gifts of the Holy Spirit the way God intended, so I stopped trying to become someone else. Instead, I began communing with God. That's when the eyes of my understanding began to open. I started realizing that God works through me according to how he uniquely created me. I see, hear, and perceive things that others often overlook. Yet as I write this today, I still do not speak in tongues. Why?

Truth About Tongues

First, let me be clear. Speaking in tongues is not the evidence that someone has the Holy Spirit. Scripture teaches that the Spirit gives different gifts as he wills. Not everyone receives the same manifestation. I can also tell you something else from experience. Many people are simply imitating what they've seen. Some are sincere, others are performing because someone taught them that's what they were supposed to do. I know because I once tried to do the very same thing.

me a light. When you truly understand that God created each of us uniquely, you'll stop chasing someone else's calling and begin flowing from what He already placed within you. As you do, you'll naturally begin separating yourself from the pressure to sound like everyone else, act like everyone else, or minister like everyone else. You'll become set apart because you'll finally be functioning the way God designed you. Trying to become everyone else only delays becoming who God created you to be. What's in you isn't what's in me. What's in me isn't what's in you. Your responsibility is to commune with God until he reveals your uniqueness. Man apart from God always tries to reproduce himself.
