Intimacy and Intercession Part 2

Prophets not only understood God's words and relayed them to others, they also gained God's ear.

It was the special privilege of the true Old Testament prophets to stand in the council of the Almighty to listen to His words. It was this access that ensured the accuracy and authority of the prophecies they spoke.

But this access also gave them the privilege of gaining the ear of God as they interceded on behalf of their people and ensured the success of their intercession. God spoke to them and they spoke to God. Both of these aspects need to be kept in mind if we are to gain a true understanding of what a prophet is.

From the foregoing stories it is clear that, on occasion, an intercessor may in prayer invoke the judgement of God upon a sinful nation whereas at another time he may terminate the judgement.

Abraham’s Prayer for Sodom
Genesis 18:20-33
Then the Lord said, “Because the outcry against Sodom and Gomorrah is great and their sin is very grave, I will go down to see whether they have done altogether according to the outcry that has come to me. And if not, I will know.”

Moses Prayer, Interceding For Israel
Exodus 32:11-13
But Moses implored the Lord his God and said, “O Lord, why does your wrath burn hot against your people, whom you have brought out of the land of Egypt with great power and with a mighty hand? Why should the Egyptians say, ‘With evil intent did he bring them out, to kill them in the mountains and to consume them from the face of the earth’? Turn from your burning anger and relent from this disaster against your people. Remember Abraham, Isaac, and Israel, your servants, to whom you swore by your own self, and said to them, ‘I will multiply your offspring as the stars of heaven, and all this land that I have promised I will give to your offspring, and they shall inherit it forever.’”

Esther Intercedes for Her People
Esther 7:1-10

"So the king and Haman came to dine with Queen Esther, 2 and as they were drinking wine on the second day, the king asked Esther again, “Whatever you request, even as much as half of the kingdom, it will be given to you.”

Intercessions are offered up for a wide range of issues, including health, personal challenges, spiritual growth, or global concerns. They are a fundamental part of Christian worship and personal devotion.

  • Intercession causes us to internalize God’s Word and changes us.
  • Intercession unites our hearts with the people and places we pray for.
  • Intercession renews our hope and faith.
  • Intercession imparts life (John 6:63).
  • Intercession makes a long-term impact beyond this age (Rev. 5:8, Rev. 8:1-6).
  • Intercession humbles us.
  • Intercession changes the spiritual atmosphere of cities and nations.
  • Intercession causes multiple blessings to return to the intercessor (Luke 6:38).
