Anand’s article “Family of "Civilized" States and Japan; A Story of Humiliation, Assimilation, Defiance and Confrontation,” published in JHIL 5(1) (2003), 1-75. What did it take to become recognized as a “civilized” state in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries? And which role did international law play in this process for the Japanese empire?
